[14:20:31] stuartm: OSX doesn't support WPS ... well that's a surprising decision by Apple :(
[14:35:23] stuartm: actually, I've no idea why I'm surprised, everything I've seen of OSX has been seriously underwhelming
[14:36:12] stuarta: it's starting to get as bad a name as windows
[14:37:17] stuarta: stuartm: btw. what would break if we moved to the latest jquery? I tried it a while ago and it silenced most of the errors i was seeing in the chrome dev tools
[14:37:29] stuarta: and nothing seemed to break in the backend webserver
[14:37:32] stuartm: Safari is just broken, tried loading up the WebFrontend and it gets stuck reloading the frame content over and over again, no reason that should happen (it doesn't with any other browser)
[14:38:20] stuartm: stuarta: can't say, there is only minimal jquery usage in the 'frontend' functionality I added, it's the older setup stuff which uses it heavily
[14:38:43] stuarta: okay, then given it's unfinished, there really is no reason to stay on an older release?
[14:38:51] stuartm: no, none
[14:39:04] stuarta: okay, i'll push that change then
[14:39:13] stuartm: I'm not a jquery fan, try to avoid using it
[14:39:43] stuarta: i'm learning pure javascript, so i understand things better
[14:39:58] stuarta: then i might be able to understand jquery
[14:45:08] stuartm: a lot of what jquery does adds no value above javascript, it reimplements basic javascript functionality with it's own inconsistent syntax seemingly just for the sake of it
[14:47:17] stuartm: the API isn't even very stable, I'd much rather use pure javascript most of the time as everyone will be able to understand the code
[14:48:58] stuarta: i like the idea of require.js
[14:52:52] Chutt_ is now known as Chutt
[14:53:44] stuartm: there are useful javascript libraries and tools, what I mean by 'pure javascript' is avoiding frameworks which replace basic language contructs, classes and the DOM
[14:54:08] stuarta: makes sense
[14:54:40] stuartm: I like AngularJS for example
[14:55:17] letifosiferrari (letifosiferrari!~letifosif@216.207.42.132) has joined #mythtv
[14:57:47] stuartm: I wasn't always so sure I would like it, but it does something very useful and it does it well, even though it borrows a couple of bits from jQuery it doesn't seek to be a complete wrapper to javascript
[14:58:25] stuarta: the amount of different frameworks out there is ridiculous
[14:59:46] stuartm: yes, it can be confusing and frustrating to find the right tools
[15:05:26] stuarta: dammit, i need to track down this QIODevice issue
[15:05:43] stuarta: abrt within 30sec of startup
[15:08:24] stuartm: maybe worse, jQuery and other frameworks now mean 'javascript' to far too many people – try looking for solutions to a problem and you have to wade through hundreds of suggestions which use jquery to find the native solution you were looking/asking for
[15:08:27] pvr4me (pvr4me!~craigtrel@d24-150-182-175.home.cgocable.net) has joined #mythtv
[15:08:36] stuarta: #12477 if interested
[15:08:36] ** MythLogBot http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/12477 **
[15:08:54] stuartm: yeah, I'll take a look
[15:09:49] pvr4me: stuartm re WPS on OSX, I believe it is because of the security issues in WPS
[15:10:09] pvr4me: eg http://www.howtogeek.com/176124/wi-fi-protect . . . -disable-it/
[15:10:15] jheizer: Nice part is that some of the handy things from jquery have made it back into js proper. So it will be less needed as time goes on.
[15:15:03] stuartm: pvr4me: only certain types of WPS are insecure and only at the router, it's not a client insecurity so that wouldn't explain why they don't offer a WPS client
[15:18:18] stuartm: when you're using an 64 character completely random string as a wifi password, being asked to type it in manually is a PITA
[15:19:32] stuartm: they encourage people to use short and simple passwords by not using WPS, which is ultimately less secure than 'push button' WPS
[15:20:00] pvr4me: Um, no? Encouraged to use WPA2-PSK
[15:21:18] stuartm: so WPA2-PSK doesn't use a password/key?
[15:21:21] stuartm: :)
[15:22:17] stuartm: WPS has nothing to do with the encryption used, it's a method for sharing the authentication token between the access point and client
[15:23:01] stuartm: WPS and WPA2-PSK aren't mutally exclusive, I use both
[15:28:03] pvr4me: OK, you’d know better than me.
[15:29:57] stuartm: WPS shouldn't be confused with WEP, or WPA
[15:30:14] stuartm: it's basically like bluetooth discovery mode but for wifi
