[12:17:14] peper03: skd5aner: I also prefer the full disc experience (as long as it doesn't mean being forced to watch adverts/trailers). I'll try to take a look at it at some point. I'm guessing there's probably a fair bit of work required, since I seem to remember seeing the bluray lib we're using is old.
[12:17:47] peper03: If it's changed as much as the DVD libs, that first hurdle will take a bit of sorting out (and I'd like to get the DVD libs sync'ed too).
[12:18:42] peper03: Just got to get the building work out of the way so I sit somewhere warm and comfortable. Probably going to be a few more weeks yet :(
[13:26:25] sphery: stuarta: The screensaver support we have now is basically only for xscreensaver. The same code used to work for gnome-screensaver, but then they "broke" (and decided not to fix) their -poke argument and said all projects should write support for the gnome-screensaver dbus API into them. Then gnome project decided to completely throw away gnome-screensaver and build a new one from scratch (so now gnome 3 isn't using gnome-screensaver). With ...
[13:26:31] sphery: ... the new one there's no -poke equivalent, so you have to use the dbus API, but it's a different dbus API from the gnome-screensaver dbus api
[13:28:13] stuartm: still, dbus isn't so tricky, I'm sure it wouldn't take someone very long to implement support
[13:28:15] sphery: stuarta: and the kde screensaver support we had was working because kde screensaver used to notice and react to changes to X DPMS state, so we just set that and KDE screensaver would disable/enable itself. It seems it no longer reacts to those changes and, instead, we have to use the KDE screensaver dbus API.
[13:28:50] sphery: while the dbus stuff isn't tricky, it's annoying that they expect us to build in support for their screensaver-of-the-day/DBus-API-of-the-week
[13:30:15] MythBuild: build #980 of master-f20–64bit is complete: Failure [4failed compile core] Build details are at http://code.mythtv.org/buildbot/builders/mast . . . t/builds/980 blamelist: Stuart Morgan <smorgan@mythtv.org >
[13:30:15] sphery: I really wanted to use xdg-screensaver--which is just a script that figures out what screensaver is running and "does the right thing" to tell it when to inhibit and when not to, but it had some serious bugs, so it didn't work at all with the post-broken-poke-argument gnome-screensaver or with the dbus-api-only kde screensaver

[13:30:17] stuartm: does anyone know of an http/web server compliance testing tool? I've been searching for weeks and haven't found anything promising, yet for the new WebSocket protocol you've already got tools like autobahn which is extremely thorough

[13:31:13] sphery: 5 years ago I submitted 3 patches with bug reports to fix those problems. They acceped one and got the KDE screensaver support working, and 5 years to the day from submission, they accepted the 2nd
[13:33:06] MythBuild: build #1358 of master-win8-msvc-2010–32bit is complete: Failure [4failed Configure and Build] Build details are at http://code.mythtv.org/buildbot/builders/mast . . . /builds/1358 blamelist: Stuart Morgan <smorgan@mythtv.org >
[13:33:22] sphery: the 3rd patch (which makes gnome-screensaver work) with xdg-screensaver hasn't been accepted, yet and may be OBE--it turns out that while gnome-screensaver has an Inhibit method in its DBus API (exactly like KDE screensaver), which is what I used to fix xdg-screensaver for both kde and gnome-screensaver, the new gnome 3 screensaver has a crappy dbus api without any inhibit, so it won't work the same
[13:35:22] sphery: FWIW, the patches/bug reports for xdg-screensaver are: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26085#c6 , https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29859 , and https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29860

[13:35:36] sphery: oh, and I stand corrected--I used SimulateUserActivity dbus method, not Inhibit
[13:37:18] sphery: so, basically, xdg-screensaver works for xscreensaver, gnome-screensaver, but not KDE screensaver nor gnome3's screensaver

[16:01:03] peper03: So basically #define UNUSED __attribute__((unused)) if we're using gcc.
[16:09:52] banksy (banksy!~banksy@124-170-83-138.dyn.iinet.net.au) has quit (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
[16:24:43] dekarl: peper03: just hardcode it to #define UNUSED
[16:25:25] dekarl: its to signal the compiler parameters that are unused in the implementation in a sane way
[16:25:53] dekarl: we can just silence *external* :)
[16:26:23] peper03: Yeah, I could do that but it would be nice to have the functionality 'provided'.
[16:27:26] peper03: Personally, where it used I would just have commented out the parameter name. That usually keeps compilers quiet (or are the some that will complain about that too?)
[16:27:31] dekarl: I can see how to translate that into our configure
[16:27:43] dekarl: peper03: not on C :)
[16:28:06] dekarl: I tried for the libz stuff in mythgame
[16:30:01] peper03: We've used it at work in the past without problems on C and C++ but I think we've always been using gcc. Better than writing something like 'param = param;'
[16:31:03] peper03: That got us into a world of trouble when 'param' turned out in one instance to be a pointer to a memory-mapped FIFO.
[16:33:19] peper03: I guess checking $cc_default=="gcc" should be close enough, right?
[17:15:25] stuartm: peper03: we have defines like that in our *exp.h files for each lib rather than in configure
[17:15:56] stuartm: they are wrapped in #if ((__GNUC__ > 4) || ((__GNUC__ == 4) && (__GNUC_MINOR__ >= 2)))
[17:16:24] stuartm: i.e. gcc 4.2+
[17:17:04] stuartm: i.e. libs/libmythbase/mythbaseexp.h
[17:18:25] stuartm: I think that it's neater to stick that stuff in a header which gets pulled in where it's needed that to try and cram it into configure
[17:18:57] stuartm: we actually have "define MUNUSED __attribute__((unused))" already
[17:20:23] stuartm: mythtvexp.h for libmythtv

[17:47:21] peper03: stuartm: Sounds reasonable. I guess that means adding a #include to each file in libdvdread that needs it but for one thing, at the moment it's only one file, and for another, it should be relatively easy to spot when merging in future.

[18:36:13] dekarl: I looked into it in detail and this is what came out of all variants and discussions http://www.mythtv.org/wiki?title=Coding_Stand . . . ;oldid=57009
[18:37:51] dekarl: this commit broke the build on some builders https://github.com/MythTV/mythtv/commit/557eb . . . 3103c3032bd8
[18:40:22] dekarl: Just commenting out the parameter name is my preferred solution, if it works. It encodes the intention in such a way that the compiler can work out mistakes.
[18:47:49] dekarl: otoh, MUNUSED sounds like its a good way to get there from here
[18:49:11] peper03: dekarl: I prefer commenting out the parameter name myself. The problem is just that this is an external lib. I'd like to keep the differences between our copy and upstream to an absolute minimum.
[18:50:17] stuartm: the 'unused' attribute still appears in the latest gcc documentation fwiw
[18:51:18] stuartm: seems clang also respects it
[18:51:52] dekarl: peper03: me too. But when I prepared the commenting out to send it upstream I noticed that it did break some of our builders. I did google about a bit, but could not find a hint on that being supperted in a later C standard :(
[18:52:23] dekarl: stuartm, will marking it unused emit errors when the parameter is used?
[18:53:12] stuartm: dekarl: I don't know
[18:53:47] peper03: dekarl: Which builder broke? I wouldn't have expected a C compiler to complain about an unnamed parameter. Traditionally C never cared much about what was passed.
[18:54:36] dekarl: peper03: I forgot, need to look in the mailing list, maybe its there
[18:55:16] peper03: dekarl: The GCC documentation says 'This attribute, attached to a variable, means that the variable is meant to be possibly unused'. "possibly" certainly means to me that it could be used.
