[18:19:40] sphery: dekarl: you're correct that callsign doesn't need to be unique, but should be unique for channels with differing content
[18:20:45] sphery: I think the code in the scanner that #12330 is talking about was put there as a shortcut for the UK guys since (and this is probably a bad explanation/approximation of what it was really about) they have same broadcasts from different towers and only wanted one
[18:20:45] ** MythLogBot http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/12330 **
[18:21:22] sphery: that being UK's DVB-T
[18:22:22] dekarl: sphery, I thought the MythTV definition is to make the callsign the same for channels which generally share content. e.g. "Chan" + "ChanHD" or "Chan North" + "Chan South" should both be changed to just "Chan" so the scheduler considers both for "this channel" rules?
[18:23:46] dekarl: if then intent was as you said then its just wrong and in violation of the of the spec :)
[18:26:35] Warped (Warped!~Warped@108.85.160.119) has quit (Quit: ChatZilla 0.9.91 [Firefox 34.0.5/20141126041045])
[18:26:37] stuartm: dekarl: for MythTV's purposes channels with the same callsign should be identical – if only "Chan North" shows "North News", but the scheduler treats "Chan South" as the same channel then it may record the wrong program
[18:27:51] stuartm: for DVB-T, we should not be ignoring channels with identical names, and perhaps the easiest solution is to not be incorrectly inserting the name into the callsign column, but instead leaving it blank
[18:30:13] stuartm: I made the mistake of renaming the HD channels from "BBC One HD" to "BBC One" like the SD version, from that point on although the scheduler indicated it would record the HD version it would often record the SD version
[18:34:06] stuartm: or maybe that was as a result of giving them the same number ... so confusing
[18:34:56] stuartm: I know there are parts of the recorder which tune by channel number instead of chanid which can have unexpected consequences
[18:39:19] dekarl: stuartm, we could do something crazy and document all this callsign/channel number mess somewhere...
[18:39:49] stuartm: documenting it would be a very good first step
[18:40:28] dekarl: in you example I think the scheduler did the right thing but IIRC there was some issue with mixup with RecordingButOtherChannel vs Recording vs RecordingButOtherTime
[18:40:52] stuartm: second step would be providing feedback in the UI, e.g. "The channel number you selected is already in use, do you want to treat this channel as identical to '{channel name}'?"
[18:41:06] dekarl: I don't think that the scheduler will record the wrong program in the north/south example.
[18:42:04] dekarl: It will consider all programmes of the channels with the same callsign for matching and then pick one. It will not randomly record any channel with the same callsign just because the correct programme is on at this time on some channel with the same callsign
[18:42:25] dekarl: I'm not sure if you can cause such behaviour with the same channel number though :/
[18:44:25] dekarl: We could model our channels more like its done on atlas, with a master channel and variants
[18:58:41] dekarl: If I find the correct spot my intent wrt #12330 is to just remove the duplicate check. In DVB you must allow multiple identical copies of whole multiplexes with identical ONID/TSID/SID/service_name and do something sensible automatically (like consider them basically the same, giving preference to the strongest signal, etc pp).

[20:04:52] neufeld: stuartm, jya : about my ALSA questions... how many times have people told us "I dind't change anything!" Well, I've got my bash history and file modification timestamps to prove I didn't change anything, but it's working now. I've rebooted between the two tests, all I can imagine is that either something in userland is configured at boot time, or the kernel was grumpy and needed a clean start. Thanks again for
[20:04:53] neufeld: your help.

[22:51:00] paul-h: tgm4883: ^

[22:56:39] paul-h: tgm4883: OK thanks
[23:03:23] paul-h: tgm4883: does MythBuntu do anything special with the Temp storage group it would normally be at ~/.mythtv/tmp ?
