[10:03:18] esperegu: I understood that passthrough for pulseaudio is not supported? In pulseaudio they said that:
[10:03:19] esperegu: <fritsch> i don't actually know what they are doing, but for myth
[10:03:19] esperegu: <fritsch> they can easily c/p the xbmc passthrough code
[10:03:19] esperegu: <fritsch> and fine

[10:10:16] dekarl: also does this "xbmc passtrough code" have a link?
[10:10:54] dekarl: otoh, whats passtrhough good for?
[10:13:16] dekarl: In the end its "the people who do the work couldn't get it to work or be bothered" and "the people who could get it to work or are bother don't do" (for various reasons, likely the most important being that you only get 24 hours per day)
[10:13:25] stuartm: I assume it passes it straight to ALSA, avoided all PA delays

[11:12:23] esperegu: dekarl: it looks like it works for were it is required? that is for spdif?
[11:12:26] esperegu: dekarl: https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/blob/master/xbmc . . . inkPULSE.cpp
[11:22:28] dekarl: SPDIF? I though everybody uses HDMI by now :)
[11:23:52] kenni: jya: Thanks for all of your work on improving the live TV situation :) I have a question which perhaps is related to some of the recent changes. I helped a friend setting up a new combined 0.27 backend/frontend yesterday and we experienced constant minor stuttering during live TV. Pausing for 10 seconds removed the stuttering. Is this a know issue in current 0.27-fixes? If not, I’ll create a ticket about it. Do you have any input regarding log argume
[11:24:23] esperegu: dekarl: nope. its even weirder that it is not implemented by now ;-)
[11:24:44] esperegu: dekarl: I still like the idea of teh amp not being connected to the pc
[11:24:49] dekarl: but see above... ENOTIME => patches appreciated :D
[11:25:51] ** esperegu blew up an amp that was connected to a pc that way and prefers not to repeat it. **
[11:26:21] esperegu: dekarl: I am no coder. Since they said it was copy pastable I hoped there would be someone here interested to do that....
[11:26:52] esperegu: <esperegu> fritsch: well. I mean that they mentioned about what doesnt work and workarounds. I supposed the table with a lot of red was a pointer and thats why I asked
[11:26:52] esperegu: <fritsch> nope
[11:26:52] esperegu: <fritsch> it's just a "either" vs. "or" currently
[11:26:52] esperegu: <fritsch> either passthrough of dts, ac3, eac3
[11:26:52] esperegu: <fritsch> or multi channel
[11:26:53] esperegu: <fritsch> and bitstream audio not supported (dts-hd, truehd)
[11:29:59] dekarl: esperegu: xbmc and mythtv have unrelated AudioEngines. So the copy'n'paste should be taken figuritivly instead of literally. Maybe you can interest someone in that, but at the moment we are all swamped with higher priority projects. (speaking just for me)
[11:31:43] stuartm: esperegu: generally we just advise people to disable PA since it's flawed and buggy
[11:32:12] stuartm: hence no-one has bothered to improve support because there's not much point
[11:33:29] esperegu: stuartm: yeah. I like the fact that you can have network soundcards
[11:33:34] stuartm: one of the biggest advocates for PA support in MythTV eventually became our audio maintainer and having realised just how rubbish PA is, now advocates against it :)
[11:34:14] esperegu: stuartm: and when pulse is running I cannot use the port anymore for other stuff. so it needs to go through pulse
[11:34:44] esperegu: stuartm: but I suppose my use case is not one that is very common.
[11:34:57] dekarl: esperegu: in the end it just seems so much easier to use xbmc as playback frontend if you like the feature set then it is to rewrite another xbmc style playback frontend
[11:36:04] esperegu: dekarl: no xbmc style. just spdif passthrough in pulseaudio.
[11:36:39] esperegu: dekarl: as said. I just like the fact that with pulseaudio I can create a network soundcard
[11:36:43] dekarl: MythTV's style is "all the audio belongs to MythTV" ;)
[11:37:24] esperegu: dekarl: yeah. and I run MythTV on LinuxMCE.. and LinuxMCE style is "all your hardware belongs to LMCE" ... so go figure ;-)
[11:37:24] dekarl: esperegu: what use case is that? And can'T it be done with the ALSA API, too?
[11:37:43] esperegu: dekarl: I stream the audio from my desktop to the box
[11:38:31] esperegu: dekarl: so it outputs on the amps connected to both my desktop and the server
[11:39:18] esperegu: dekarl: while still being able to play/use the server/htpc for playback
[11:43:32] Steve-Goodey (Steve-Goodey!~steve@host86-132-97-8.range86-132.btcentralplus.com) has joined #mythtv
[11:47:10] dekarl: Oh I hate it. the pulseaudio site mentions "use the ALSA plugin to have an ALSA application output to ALSA on top of PulseAudio" and its a 404 link!
[11:50:17] dekarl: I fixed it for you... http://git.alsa-project.org/?p=alsa-plugins.g . . . ulse;hb=HEAD
[11:52:26] dekarl: Otoh, why not use the PulseAudio support that we do have for the networked audio use case?
[12:05:15] esperegu: dekarl: how yo usee that? I would like to be playing my desktop audio and the htpc audio at the same time.
[12:06:45] dekarl: btw, the alsa-plugin way is the suggested perfect setup for MythTV versions around 0.21, according to the MythTV section on www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/PulseAudio/Documentation/User/PerfectSetup/
[12:07:00] dekarl: esperegu: just go into audio setup?

[12:22:13] esperegu: dekarl: I will check it out. thx a lot. Unfortunately first have to attend a birthday :-/
[12:24:23] dekarl: looks like native PulseAudio support was added in 0.23 ( https://github.com/MythTV/mythtv/commit/7d86b . . . 0c6873e9ca63 ) but didn't make it into the release notes
[12:24:48] dekarl: it was part of "Rewritten audio"
[12:32:37] dekarl: esperegu: Updates to the wiki with your findings wrt PulseAudio are appreciated at e.g. http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Configuring_Digital_Sound#PulseAudio
[12:33:59] dekarl: hm, now that I look at that page... it says "Relevant for versions prior to 0.23 only" meh
[12:40:21] wagnerrp: stuartm, esperegu: you disable pulseaudio, no so much because of the delays, but because it simply does not support passthrough at all
[12:40:54] wagnerrp: all compressed audio must be decompressed, remixed with other audio sources on the PC, and recompressed before being sent to ALSA and the output device
[12:43:26] esperegu: wagnerrp: we just discussed code that supports passthrough ?
[12:43:38] esperegu: wagnerrp: https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/blob/master/xbmc . . . inkPULSE.cpp
[12:45:20] wagnerrp: "// passthrough is only working when device has Stereo channel config"
[12:45:26] wagnerrp: that sounds awfully limiting
[12:46:00] esperegu: wagnerrp: well. its less limiting then just stereo .....
[12:46:23] wagnerrp: huh?
[12:46:41] esperegu: wagnerrp: its either passthrough of dts, ac3, eac3 or multichannel
[12:47:41] esperegu: wagnerrp: [12:23:50] <esperegu> fritsch: well. I mean that they mentioned about what doesnt work and workarounds. I supposed the table with a lot of red was a pointer and thats why I asked
[12:47:42] esperegu: [12:24:01] <fritsch> nope
[12:47:42] esperegu: [12:24:09] <fritsch> it's just a "either" vs. "or" currently
[12:47:42] esperegu: [12:24:16] <fritsch> either passthrough of dts, ac3, eac3
[12:47:42] esperegu: [12:24:20] <fritsch> or multi channel
[12:47:42] esperegu: [12:24:32] <fritsch> and bitstream audio not supported (dts-hd, truehd)
[12:48:09] wagnerrp: passthrough of dts, ac3, and eac3 is all bitstreaming
[12:48:34] wagnerrp: because you're just routing bits straight through to the output port
[12:48:50] esperegu: yes. he mentioned that the hd versions are not supprted
[12:49:19] esperegu: is that supported by spdiff at all?
[12:49:39] esperegu: reboot...
[12:49:40] wagnerrp: no. spdif only supports dts and ac3 (no eac3) up to 2Mbps
[12:49:49] esperegu: well. thats why its not upported.
[12:49:54] esperegu: cause its only for those =)
[12:49:59] esperegu: brb
[12:51:51] esperegu: re
[12:53:02] wagnerrp: but it's all "bitstream audio"
[12:53:49] wagnerrp: if "bitstream audio" is not supported, then they're not doing passthrough
[12:53:57] wagnerrp: they're decoding, and re-encoding
[12:54:23] wagnerrp: which includes dts, ac3, and eac3
[12:54:43] wagnerrp: and lpcm for that matter, but since there is no compression with lpcm, that's not really an issue
