[11:55:53] stuartm: grand plans never realised
[11:58:14] stuartm: the digest could have been for a file hash, fingerprinting so we could keep track of files like in mythvideo or to spot changes to tags without relying on the last modified timestamp (some tagging apps preserve the last modified timestamp)

[16:27:33] skd5aner: stuartm: in response to your discussion recarding music genre's yesterday, one of the reasons that mb doesn't rely too heavily on genre's is because it's very subjective. If Garth Brooks releases a Christmas album that covers Elvis, what is the genre? Country? Christmas? Holiday? Rock-n-Roll? etc... hence "tags"
[16:28:52] skd5aner: stuartm: when I tag my music collection, I use musicbrainz picard tagger with the last.fm plugin which leverages the popularity of their tags, with a whitelist of genres, to do major and minor genres tagging. It's still very very imperfect because I don't always agree with the community. it's just too subjective.
[16:29:52] skd5aner: as an fyi, this is the plugin I use for that functionality, if you're interested in having a more advanced "genre" tagging capability – http://musicbrainz.org/doc/MusicBrainz_Picard . . . s/Lastfmplus
[16:33:44] skd5aner: also, this if you haven't seen it – http://musicbrainz.org/doc/Developer_Resources – lots of libraries available that do the heavy lifting
[16:38:03] skd5aner: stuartm: fyi, I believe DirecTV (sattelite provider in the US) has the ability for you to set up recordings during certain ads for shows and movies via an interactive "record/watch this" button. Of course, the control the distribution of the video, so easy for them to accomplish :)
[16:38:22] skd5aner: s/the control/they control
[16:39:41] skd5aner: stuartm: but yes, I'd LOVE to set up recording schedules well in the future – particular for new shows that are advertised months in advance of when they actually premier
[16:40:02] skd5aner: OK, I'm a bit chatty after catch up on the backlog, heh :)

[17:05:15] stuartm: skd5aner: I'd just point out that distributors have no problem coming up with genres for all those flac/mp3 files they sell through sites such as iTunes, Amazon, 7 Digital, Emusic etc – sure at times it may be a judgement call but it works for most people
[17:05:34] stuartm: fwiw Christmas/Holiday aren't recognised genres for music ;)
[17:06:41] stuartm: and if Garth Brooks did it in a Country _style_, then it's country – whether the original recording was Death Metal or Opera
[17:06:42] skd5aner: yea, I remember writing a tagging client back in 2001 and reading the ID3 codes...
[17:07:32] skd5aner: my two favorites (from memory) were "Christian Gangsta Rap" and "Primus"
[17:07:33] skd5aner: lol
[17:07:52] skd5aner: gotta love how those were "ratified" ID3 genre tags
[17:08:10] skd5aner: and, someday maybe I'll have a band that is a genre unto itself
[17:08:18] stuartm: heh, yeah, I'd love to hear Christian Gangsta Rap
[17:09:06] skd5aner: actually, I had a college assignment to write a napster distributed client/server clone... it was my favorite coding project from school
[17:09:18] skd5aner: in the days when Napster was still a thing
[17:09:39] skd5aner: thought it was cool that a professor assigned us to create a peer-to-peer app, haha
[17:10:29] skd5aner: so, I had to be able to parse the ID3 tags and other stuff... but that's about the last time I peeled back that layer of the onion
[17:11:06] jheizer: Ahh, college ID3 tag memories. Buddy and I wrote a audio fingerprinting/lookup system before all these others existed.
[17:11:22] skd5aner: stuartm: but, you'd be shocked at how bad the default tags are in iTunes, Amazon, etc... I know artists names who have incorrect syntax...
[17:11:35] jheizer: Went oh, that was cool and tossed it aside. I should have been shazam!
[17:11:38] skd5aner: for example "MUTEMATH" as "mutemath", or even worse "mute math"
[17:12:02] skd5aner: jheizer: :)
[17:12:10] stuartm: I've known it happen, what makes it worse are those tags come direct from the record company
[17:12:16] jheizer: We were too short sighted to see the monetary possibilities.
[17:12:52] skd5aner: jheizer: back in the early myth days I always thought it'd be cool to have a central library of commercials that are audio fingerprinted (by distributed clients) and then used for commflagging
[17:13:02] skd5aner: that idea was shot down fast
[17:13:50] skd5aner: stuartm: I know, it makes me want to cry some times... next time you make $30MM, can you please at least get the damn band name or song title right?
[17:14:17] jheizer: We were planning the Music Brainz/Picard where we could fix you id3 tags and that was it. And figured there was no way we would get access to all the recordings to build the database to be able to persue that avenue as we'd just be seen as supporting the then started napster so we moved on.
[17:14:54] stuartm: really? knee jerk reaction I suppose, 'peer to peer' and MythTV are two things we've tried to avoid putting together because the headline writers would get it all wrong
[17:15:24] jheizer: But we could match any song any of us had in 2 seconds.
[17:16:43] jheizer: Ah well, I'm not starving. I just need to dumb myself down to the twitter level of thinking to some day have another good idea.
[17:17:12] skd5aner: I rememer watching the "what is twitter" video before the service launched...
[17:17:14] stuartm: it would have to be faster today, 2 seconds per track, for let's say 5000 tracks is nearly 3 hours just to process them all
[17:17:24] skd5aner: they just kept saying "What are you doing right now" – that's what a tweet is
[17:17:26] skd5aner: lol
[17:18:28] stuartm: twitter is 'stream of conciousness' – everything you never wanted to know about that guy you barely know
[17:18:56] stuartm: bah humbug etc
[17:19:05] skd5aner: I used the audio fingerprinting in picard in 2003 to properly tag most of my tracks, but in the last 5 years, they've moved away from that primarily, and so have I... it's nicer to actually go album by album and make sure you pick the right thing
[17:19:08] jheizer: haha just picked a time. It was relatively fast for our crappy computers and being network/server based. The slow part then was decoding/downsampling the audio. Sure I could find a billion times better way now.
[17:19:38] skd5aner: audio fingerprinting is relaly only useful when you have no tags, or tags that are blatently incorrect and you cna't trust at all
[17:19:52] stuartm: jheizer: wasn't a criticism :)
[17:19:59] jheizer: Was an independent study. Too bad the professor also didn't have a good idea for $.
[17:20:22] stuartm: skd5aner: and then the question of how you ended up with such tracks arises ...
[17:20:33] jheizer: Haha, none taken, it was too slow.
[17:21:17] skd5aner: very true, although... i had some bad experiences of setting the threshold too low for auto accepting audio fingerprints to tag tracks initially... learned that mistake after a few hundred tracks were completely borked
[17:22:43] stuartm: let's face it, audio fingerprinting works around that rather awkward situation where you don't have tags because the files weren't legal rips or downloads (exception to the rule tends to be free tracks put out by some bands on their website, which are often have crappy metadata)
[17:22:46] jheizer: Ah the good old days
[17:23:00] jheizer: more free time
[17:23:01] jheizer: less work
[17:23:33] stuartm: which often
[17:23:41] jheizer: Wasted so much time on so many stupid projects.
[17:24:15] jheizer: Got bashed in here for saying I was making a windows native mythfront that was theme compliant with myth. Back before there was a window compilable port.
[17:26:06] jheizer: For the items implemented, it actually worked pretty well.
[17:29:30] jheizer: I should work on MobileMyth tonight. Been slacking off lately.
