[18:43:55] stuartm: nevermind, found the answer
[18:50:12] sphery: stuartm: are you fixing the missing redirect for docs?
[18:50:25] stuartm: yeah, attempting to at least
[18:50:42] sphery: if so, what do you think about deleting the ancient howto (either the whole /docs dir or at least its content)?
[18:51:17] sphery: I think it's prettier to get rid of old/bad info rather than just cover it up with the redirect
[18:51:17] stuartm: no longer relevant?
[18:51:21] sphery: right
[18:51:35] sphery: that was the old 0.24 howto and we've done a lot of updates since then
[18:51:41] stuartm: where are the docs now then, I've obviously missed something :)
[18:51:46] sphery: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/MythTV-HOWTO
[18:52:00] xris: stuartm: sorry.. yeah, it should be required...
[18:53:04] sphery: that goes to the current, stable version's HOWTO, and there's a – 0.26 and – 0.27 for specific versions, as shown in http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Category:MythTV-HOWTO

[19:02:55] sphery: stuartm: looks good, but we do/did have http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO.pdf for the PDF version
[19:03:08] sphery: I can re-create the pdf if necessary
[19:03:29] stuartm: actually removing the old stuff is proving difficult since it's not where you'd expect it to be ...
[19:03:30] sphery: should have mentioned that earlier, I suppose
[19:04:58] sphery: I don't know how wagnerrp configured it before, but everything except /docs/mythtv-HOWTO.pdf was redirected and the pdf file was served from /docs/mythtv-HOWTO.pdf
[19:05:00] stuartm: the docs seem to be in myth_svndocs, I'm just not sure where the redirect to docs/ is, until I find that ...
[19:05:33] stuartm: sphery: I can do that easily enough
[19:05:37] sphery: and thanks for the quick fix on this
[19:06:20] sphery: it seems wagnerrp is busy with work right now, so would have been a while before he could get to it
[19:08:10] stuartm: sphery: ok, pdf link is now excluded from the rule
[19:09:18] stuartm: the rules are now in the mythtv.conf file, which shouldn't get lost in future – it's possible wagnerrp originally added the rules as part of an htacess that was removed

[21:51:28] stuartm: "HDTV" – Now we're just throwing out acronyms
[21:54:31] stuartm: it needs to be written by someone who actually knows this stuff – it currently reads like one of those manuals you get with appliances that was written by someone outside the manufacturing company, first in Chinese then translated into English by a high school student
[21:59:32] stuartm: personally I'd shift the stuff about filters into the appendix, no first time user needs to know that stuff, it's barely of interest to most existing users
[22:01:39] stuartm: "Deinterlacing requires that your processor support SSE." << Hardly relevant information anymore, I doubt anyone is using a 20 year old processor

[22:02:13] Chutt (Chutt!~ijr@cpe-76-190-199-73.neo.res.rr.com) has joined #mythtv
[22:02:31] stuartm: in fact, it was likely irrelevant when these docs were first written
[22:23:00] kormoc: Arm cpu's rarely have SSE, no?
[22:25:54] stuartm: Arm cpus have their own set of issues before you even get to the problem of SSE, the fact is that the section (which I've now deleted in it's entirety) which was talking about Pentium and Pentium 2 processors, didn't account for OpenGL and VDPAU deinterlacing etc
[22:26:22] sphery: stuartm: if you make changes to the howto, you need to either make them only to the "master" version ( http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/MythTV-HOWTO_-_0.27 ) or both
[22:27:09] stuartm: so it was not only out of date when discussing 'current' processors, but entirely behind the times when talking about deinterlacing options, even the Xv deinterlacers have been re-written since those docs were created
[22:27:10] sphery: when we release 0.27, the 0.27 version becomes the one we redirect to from http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/MythTV-HOWTO , and gets copied to a 0.28 version
[22:28:49] sphery: and, yes, there are a ton of places that can be improved--the problem is finding the time
[22:28:58] stuartm: sphery: at this point, I'm concerned that those docs are so far out of date that starting from scratch might be better – I honestly think pointing 0.26 users to those docs does far more harm than good
[22:29:31] sphery: that's a possibility, too--if someone will actually write it
[22:29:54] stuartm: if I was a newbie and I read those docs today, I wouldn't bother with MythTV
[22:30:33] sphery: the idea of getting it onto the wiki was to let users provide direct feedback on the discussion page and to allow us to take the best of the wiki pages (most of which were more up to date than the howto sections) and use them to replace the howto section (where the howto would become a bunch of different pages, rather than the current single page)
[22:31:34] sphery: though that's a lot of work, too (and has issues when it comes to maintaining different versions of the pages for different versions of mythtv), so if someone wanted to start from scratch, that may be a good approach
[22:31:43] stuartm: they are painful to read, overly technical and constantly veering off-topic, outdated (in case I haven't stressed this enough) and generally not well written
[22:33:49] sphery: they've suffered from a lot of patching issues over the years (where more was added because of some specific problem someone had) and changed/broke the flow
[22:33:52] stuartm: "NOTE: You should go through the various setup screens in mythfrontend before using any other modules to ensure that the the database is correctly initialized." ... err, no
[22:34:42] stuartm: the very first thing the frontend does on startup is initialises the database with the setting defaults, has been that way since before I became a dev (or even a user)
[22:34:49] sphery: but please make sure you change the 0.27 version, at least, or both
[22:35:13] stuartm: sure
[22:37:13] stuartm: I suspect we'll end up deleting the 0.26 version, re-writing the 0.27 version and all pointing users at that
[22:37:36] sphery: that's fine, too
[22:37:49] stuartm: pointing all (tired)
[22:39:43] stuartm: and I guess it's going to be me doing the re-write, since I'm all worked up about it
[22:54:45] stuartm: do we still care about Analogue cards? I'd suggest that the how-to should contain information relevant to the majority of users, the unusual use-cases can be documented elsewhere in the wiki?

[23:23:31] sphery: stuartm: ^^^
[23:28:23] stuartm: I've shuffled that section, putting the Frame Grabber stuff at the bottom with a "Strongly Discouraged" warning
[23:32:48] stuartm: there's no information under 'Video Capture Device' for IPTV, firewire or HLS
[23:33:03] stuartm: or the HDHomerun
