[13:18:21] Seeker`_: any hints on where I might find the code that deals with transcoding for the flowplayer? I suspect it is ignoring the audio bitrate option
[13:22:18] Seeker`_: ah, no. It is just set to use 11.025Khz sampling
[13:23:29] Seeker`_: Any reason why the audio sampling rate is set so low?

[14:10:19] danielk22: skd5aner: It appears to be up, but httpd is under heavy load
[14:24:00] danielk22: It looks to be a spambot attacking code.mythtv.org with get requests on /trac/newticket that is overloading the system.
[14:25:20] stuartm: at times like this having something like shorewall running would be nice, a simple "shorewall drop {ip}" is a hell of lot easier than writing rules for iptables
[14:25:45] stuartm: of course hosts.deny does much the same thing ...
[14:27:15] danielk22: stuartm: Are we using inetd for http? i.e. will hosts.deny even work?
[14:31:45] stuartm: no we're not, I forgot about that
[14:32:26] stuartm: so firewall level is the best way
[14:33:37] stuartm: stuarta: what do you think about having a simple shorewall (or similar) install so that we can more easily add temporary blocks on certain IPs? You might know of a better way, shorewall is just what I'm familiar with
[14:37:10] danielk22: For the moment I've added the offending IPs to /etc/httpd/conf.d/code/trac.conf but shorewall or similar is a better option.

[14:44:34] stuartm: danielk22: I am, I noticed :)
[14:46:20] Seeker`_: would anyone have any objections to changing modules/stream/stream_flv.pl:127: from -ar 11025 to -ar 22050 or -ar 44100?
[14:46:47] wagnerrp: probably
[14:47:05] stuartm: I'm assuming the existing rate was chosen to support streaming over low bitrate internet connections
[14:47:16] wagnerrp: stream_flv.pl needs to be dropped in favor of streaming through the services API
[14:47:20] Seeker`_: you can set the bitrate anyway
[14:47:41] wagnerrp: there's not a whole lot of use maintaining it at this point
[14:47:51] stuartm: that too
[14:48:32] Seeker`_: not really' maintaining', just 'setting a default so it doesn't sound like the audio is coming over a pair of tin cans and some string'
[14:50:20] Wolfgang2 (Wolfgang2!~Thunderbi@178-27-144-160-dynip.superkabel.de) has quit (Quit: Wolfgang2)
[14:58:28] danielk22: I'm pro-44100, sound is nothing compared to video wrt to bitrate.
[14:59:46] danielk22: stuartm: It's now up to date except for percona (which requires manual update with mysqldump).
[15:01:01] skd5aner: stuartm: this has worked EXTREMELY well for me and a forum I run – http://www.spambotsecurity.com/zbblock.php
[15:02:03] danielk22: It's a DDOS, new IPs have popped up.
[15:02:35] skd5aner: If it's from known bad blocks or botnets – zbblock does a good job of blocking them
[15:03:22] danielk22: Actually, maybe not. Looks like the logs are now just logging not so useful domain names instead of IPs.
[15:03:45] skd5aner: wagnerrp: ^ you might want to consider this to prevent wiki spam registrations – I was getting several spam registrations an hour when I migrated to a different forum sofware – leveraged zbblock and I haven't gotten a single spam registration in 2 months
[15:07:08] skd5aner: amazing how quick my zbblock logs fill up, actually
[15:13:14] danielk22: stuartm: Are you expert enough in iptables to block the ips without risk of making the server unreachable ?
[15:13:49] danielk22: They are still putting a significant burden on the server.. 80.93.217.39 96.57.9.142 91.121.73.4
[15:18:53] skd5aner: danielk22: do you tihnk zbblock would help? I mean, using IPTables is a never ending game
[15:19:50] danielk22: skd5aner: quite possibly.. I just don't know it.. I think something automated would be good so long as we could mark certain addresses as good so we're never locked out ourselves.
[15:20:15] skd5aner: they have a whitelist – also an ability to "unlock" yourself if needed

[15:23:41] skd5aner: is trac not php?
[15:23:47] wagnerrp: python
[15:24:43] skd5aner: ah... drats
[15:24:44] wagnerrp: i've been planning on writing something for the wiki, to block account creation through checking against services like zbblock and stopforumspam
[15:24:47] skd5aner: ok, nm :)
[15:25:00] wagnerrp: but that would just be blocking the spam. it wouldn't do anything for server load incurred by them
[15:25:41] wagnerrp: how long has the server been maxed out like this?
[15:25:48] skd5aner: mediawiki is php though isn't it?

[15:25:58] wagnerrp: yeah, php
[15:26:05] skd5aner: so, it'd likely work for that
[15:26:36] danielk22: wagnerrp: don't know but the last log wasn't too big and is only a couple days old. So I'm guessing < 2 days.

[15:29:13] wagnerrp: wow... lots of calls to /trac/newticket
[15:29:38] danielk22: yep all from these three: 80.93.217.39 96.57.9.142 91.121.73.4

[16:24:00] danielk22: stuartm: maybe we can make sure there is someone around at OSL before we turn em on?

[16:44:19] stuartm: fwiw, the shorewall configs are in /etc/shorewall – the pertinent files for a simple setup are policy/zones/interfaces, I've configured a single interfaces (eth0) assigned to the 'net' zone and "net to fw"/"fw to net" traffic is accepted i.e. nothing is blocked
[16:45:21] wagnerrp: well this is somewhat odd... "File does not exist: /var/lib/mailman/archives/public/mythtv-users/2004-March/034802.html+B\xc3\xb6tt cher+gmx.net+"+49"+-no+-scam+-email"
[16:45:24] stuartm: once a simple instance like that is running, you can create dynamic blocks on an IP address by running "shorewall drop 123.456.789.123" or "shorewall reject {IP}"
[16:48:39] stuartm: 'drop' just drops the packets with now response, 'reject' rejects, I personally prefer dropping packets since even if the bot continues hammering away it usually slows them down (most bots are too simplistic to give up when the host starts rejecting/dropping their connection attempts)
