[22:00:09] jpharvey: peper03: I tried your patch on #11288 and it fixes the problem for me with my change removed.
[22:00:09] ** MythLogBot http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/11288 **
[22:00:47] stichnot: peper03: if #11292 works for me, you will be my hero.
[22:00:47] ** MythLogBot http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/11292 **
[22:01:56] peper03: jpharvey: Cool, thanks! I've not found any regressions yet. Only improvements! There are still playback issues but that patch does seem to a good step in the right direction.
[22:03:37] peper03: stichnot: I do my best :) It's a such a simple fix that I put it in my code as a quick hack and then realised that there isn't much else that needed doing (at least, I hope not). It's an absolute pain when there's no way out of the studio's idents!
[22:04:02] jpharvey: I'll apply the patch to the other frontend and see if anyone complains about anything.
[22:04:05] jpharvey: peper03: Not sure if your change in #11291 is in any way related to a patch i added to #11186 where i tried to fix issues with highlights being drawn in the wrong place with different fill modes?

[22:06:43] peper03: jpharvey: No, I tried your patch but it didn't help that problem. Pure 'luck' that one of the DVDs I happened to pick to test #11288 had an (apparently) unusal authoring issue. VLC and XBMC don't handle it either :)
[22:06:43] ** MythLogBot http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/11288 **
[22:08:16] peper03: Interestingly, I've just found that this particular DVD produces a mainly black screen when played back using VDPAU. Every so often you get the odd glimpse of video but it's mainly black. OpenGL playback is fine. First source I've had with *that* problem.
[22:08:38] danielk22: dekarl: chanid are always >= 1
[22:08:50] danielk22: 0 is the sentinel
[22:09:43] stuartm: btw, I'm thinking of always using the first track in the desired language for DVDs instead of using the track with the greatest number of channels – does anyone know of a DVD in the wild where that would not work?
[22:13:19] peper03: stuartm: Never thought about it in detail before but shouldn't (at least in theory) the choice of audio track be determined by the VM via whatever instructions are authored on the DVD?
[22:14:17] Tobbe5178 (Tobbe5178!~asdf@h186n5-sv-a13.ias.bredband.telia.com) has joined #mythtv
[22:14:33] peper03: stuartm: I was thinking about adding default language support at some point (you just tell the VM which languages to use by default for menus, subtitles and audio). I wonder if that would help?
[22:15:09] stuartm: peper03: that's why I asked about it the other day, at the time you said that the vm didn't flag the audio track to be used :)
[22:15:57] peper03: stuartm: Ah, I thought you just meant how the audio track was encoded :)
[22:16:40] stuartm: we already ignore commentary tracks when selecting the best audio stream but unfortunately I have DVDs where those haven't been correctly labelled during authoring
[22:17:02] stuartm: and at least one DVD when the highest channel track is commentary instead of main audio
[22:17:28] bas-t (bas-t!~tycho@52484E89.cm-4-1b.dynamic.ziggo.nl) has joined #mythtv
[22:17:51] zombor (zombor!~zombor__@kohana/developer/zombor) has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[22:18:01] stuartm: peper03: I'll move that to the back burner for now then until we can determine the best fix
[22:18:55] stuartm: I still need to figure out the bug causing the wrong audio track to be decoded, even though it thinks the right one is selected :)
[22:19:27] stuartm: and I've a theory to test about why some menus are still stuttering with vdpau
[22:20:21] peper03: stuartm: I would *expect* a DVD to be authored to choose the right audio track based on whatever defaults it has (general user preference/language chosen in menu/whatever). That might not always be the case for "non-professionally" authored DVDs but then I'd just go with track 1.
[22:24:19] peper03: stuartm: How do you feel in general about adding settings for the default language to use for menus/subtitles/audio tracks. I wouldn't want to add more settings for the sake of it but I could imagine there could be plenty of non-native English speakers who'd like their DVDs to default to their own language.
[22:24:21] dekarl: should mythhdhomerun_config go into the same package as mythbackend and mythv-setup?
[22:26:16] skd5aner: gigem: are you sure that it uses callsign and not chanid? I've rescanned my channels dozens of times, and moved and changed my SD lineup and the channel rules never seem to take effect without me redoing them
[22:29:41] stuartm: peper03: the setting already exists
[22:29:57] stuartm: and is used
[22:30:43] peper03: stuartm: Does it? It's not set in the VM.
[22:31:01] peper03: stuartm: Unless I'm blind.
[22:32:51] stuartm: peper03: no, it's not set in the vm, we do the track selection in AVFD::AutoSelectAudioTrack()
[22:33:20] stuartm: setting it in the vm would only work if we have the VM tell us which tracks to use
[22:34:11] stuartm: in theory we already do though, since audio/subtitle track selection from the dvd menu works ... hadn't really thought about that before
[22:34:24] stichnot: stuartm: I wouldn't be surprised if default track selection depends on VM state, and studios play obfuscation tricks to thwart "pirates"
[22:35:21] peper03: stuartm: Ah, from the language setting under 'Appearance'? Ok. You can set the preferred language for menus/subtitles/audio tracks independently in the VM. So, you might decide you'd like 'English' as default audio, but 'French' subtitles.
[22:35:47] stichnot: by "default track selection", I mean the trace that the DVD plays automatically if you navigate through all the up-front menus
[22:35:50] stuartm: stichnot: I am beginning to suspect that's the reason we get the wrong audio track, we ask for the logical stream id from dvdnav but if those values are deliberately wrong it explains a lot
[22:35:54] stichnot: s/trace/track/
[22:36:27] stichnot: and if they aren't doing it, I hope they don't get the idea from reading IRC logs :)
[22:36:35] peper03: In the end, it's only system registers that gets set. The DVD has to query them explicitly (and I don't know how many actually do).
[22:36:40] danielk22: stuartm: I have a Disney DVD where I can't select english as a playback language even in the menus :[
[22:36:43] peper03: s/gets/get/
[22:36:50] stuartm: peper03: I'd say that's going to vary disc by disc, default to the native language as we do now is better IMHO
[22:38:05] stuartm: peper03: but setting those registers to the user-selected default language is a good idea, it might even mean that the language prompts on many DVDs highlight the correct language by default which would be nice
[22:38:37] stuartm: danielk22: well hopefully when peper03 is finished that won't be a problem any more :)
[22:38:59] stuartm: danielk22: unless you bought this DVD in Japan or something and there isn't an English track ;)
[22:39:03] skd5aner: stuartm: actually, several systems in the US leverage those 4 color buttons that are dynamically used – DirecTV (probably largest satellite provider in North America) for example – http://i.walmartimages.com/i/p/00/18/54/63/00 . . . _500X500.jpg and EVERY MCE remote has them – http://www.oneweb.co.uk/mythtv/wp-content/upl . . . e-remote.jpg
[22:39:26] skd5aner: (sorry – reading slowly through backlog :) )
[22:39:57] stuartm: skd5aner: I knew that they were used in some places, but they aren't ubiquitous as they are in the UK
[22:40:26] stuartm: skd5aner: and most MCE remotes don't have them, only those produced for the UK/European market – I've got one that does and two that don't
[22:40:30] peper03: stuartm: Exactly. You're basically giving the DVD every chance to get it right. The only question is, do we allow the user to configure the 3 language settings separately (more visible settings) or just set them to whatever language the user has set his/her Myth installation to?
[22:40:43] stuartm: peper03: the latter, for now at least
[22:41:18] skd5aner: stuartm: I'd say a significant majority of STB remotes in the last 10 years in the US has them, but they're frequently only leveraged directly in an STB's menu systems, so people don't leverage much in the guide or in playback
[22:41:27] stuartm: I think the demand for having menu/audio/subtitle in different languages would be too small
[22:42:16] skd5aner: stuartm: interesting... if I search google images for Windows MCE remote, I couldn't find a picture of one that didn't have the 4 colored buttons... and my two (different brands) have them?
[22:42:57] peper03: stuartm: There may be a similar issue (albeit small) with region codes. There are a number of region 1 discs that implement RCE (basically, they query the player's region at runtime). if the player reports anything other than region 1, you get shown a map of the world.
[22:43:19] stuartm: all of my MCE remotes are outwardly identical except for the presence of those coloured buttons and the Teletext button
[22:43:25] dekarl: stuartm, from game localization I know of the use case of japanese prefering english audio with japanese subtitles to improve their english over localized audio... (I think it was a talk about starcraft localization but I can't remember right now)
[22:44:13] peper03: I'm hoping a friend might have one of the discs that I could test to see what happens at the moment. You could get round it by allowing the user to set the region (like is currently offered for Blu-ray).
[22:44:15] skd5aner: stuartm: My cable STBs for the last several years have the 4 buttons, but they are also shaped... Yellow Triangle, Blue Box, Red Circle, and Green Diamon
[22:44:47] stuartm: dekarl: I'm not saying there isn't a use, I'm just saying that it's not going to apply to the majority of users and they can easily change tracks from the OSD/DVD menu as needed
[22:44:56] skd5aner: stuartm: anyway – just wanted to let you know it's fairly prevalent for them to be on remotes here in the US, but definitely not guarenteed, and most probably have never used them
[22:45:39] dekarl: otoh that would not be different for recordings / video. so separate choice for DVD is not needed
[22:46:46] stuartm: skd5aner: ok, I certainly wasn't going to assume they were present elsewhere, I'd personally love to have all themes display the colours mapped to the actions but that would only draw cries from those without a compatible remote
[22:47:11] skd5aner: Yea, an apple remote with 6 buttons surely won't have them ;)
[22:47:44] peper03: stuartm: AFAIK there is actually only a very small number of DVDs that use RCE, and none recently but if you have one, I'm assuming it can't be played on Myth at the moment.
[22:48:06] stichnot: I would agree with skd5aner here. I have bought several different IR receivers and thrown away the included remote, and I'm fairly certain all of them had the 4 colored buttons. However, my TiVo remote does not have those buttons.
[22:48:07] stuartm: heh, apple six button remote isn't going to have enough buttons for dedicated 'function key' behaviour
[22:48:08] skd5aner: but, I would say it'd be a great idea to leverage them... as long as they aren't the only button that could perform a certain function – it'd be great for shortcuts or other direct actions
[22:48:23] stuartm: peper03: I've never seen one
[22:48:49] skd5aner: stichnot: ha – I was just going to google search for a tivo remote image, was curious about that
[22:49:04] stuartm: any RCE protection is done at the drive level
[22:49:06] skd5aner: stichnot: those have got to be getting more and more sparse though I'd imagine
[22:49:12] stichnot: Like stuartm said, the keybindings would be there in any case, you would just want an appropriate theme to get full effect
[22:49:13] peper03: stuartm: It's only used on region 1 discs. http://www.dvdtalk.com/rce.html
[22:49:31] bas-t (bas-t!~tycho@52484E89.cm-4-1b.dynamic.ziggo.nl) has quit (Quit: Quit)
[22:50:02] stichnot: skd5aner: I think the number of usable buttons overall is the same, the TiVo has a different set of 4 buttons, including thumbs-up and thumbs-down
[22:50:04] skd5aner: I wouldn't care for them to be there even if my remote was missing the buttons, so long as they weren't huge or obnoxious
[22:50:17] peper03: stuartm: No, RCE is the DVD querying the system register that tells it what region the player is in. If the player reports region-free or multi-region, the DVD jumps to a title showing which regions apply where in the world.
[22:51:29] stuartm: peper03: sorry mixing my terminology, I meant region coding/protection
[22:52:32] peper03: stuartm: Actually, since it is only used on R1 discs, one solution would be to set the player to R1 if no regions can be read from the DVD (most will tell you which regions they can be played on – but not those protected by RCE).
[22:53:14] peper03: Anything that is RCE protected would read R1, most other discs would tell you which regions they support so you'd just set the VM to those regions before playback.
[22:53:20] peper03: And anything else wouldn't care.
[22:57:30] peper03: It sounds more complicated than it would be, I think :)
[23:06:46] stuartm: ok, I'm back to square one on the menu stutter bug, my hunch didn't work out :(

[23:41:07] gigem: skd5aner: I'm absolutely positive. The SQL in Scheduler::UpdateMatches() uses "RECTABLE.station = channel.callsign". If you move, your channel rules for the OTA channels will break because the stations' true callsigns are used and those will be different even if the stations are affiliated with the same network. If you perform a claar QAM scan, you can also run into problems because the station might not
[23:41:09] gigem: (never in my case) use the same callsign the SD uses. You can have other problems because SD insists on using unique callsigns for standard- and high-def versions of channels. When/if SD is ever able to add their own value to the guide data, we might be able to make some this easier.

[13:30:27] stuartm: peper03: I've got a DVD iso here that exhibits the "libdvdnav: trying to resume without any resume info set" issue even with the cleanup patch, iff I jump to the main menu (Navigate > Title Menu) from the first still frame
[13:30:48] stuartm: so it looks like we need to prevent people skipping that way

[13:40:09] Seeker`: stuartm: trying to build now
[13:41:07] peper03: stuartm: Any time you allow someone to perform an operation that the DVD has marked 'prohibited', you've got the chance of skipping over some initialisation. Most of the time, it probably won't cause problems but it's always a possibility.
[13:41:39] peper03: stuartm: The only way to be sure that you'll never get that problem is by enforcing the user prohibited operations.
[13:43:16] peper03: stuartm: Maybe we could display some sort of message or icon showing the user that we've let them do something they would normally have been prohibited from doing? Just as a 'if you see that and something doesn't work, it might not be our fault'!
[13:43:26] stuartm: yep, I think despite the inconvenience of that, it's preferable to actions failing or worse erroring out to the menu
[13:44:41] stuartm: maybe, but then if it fails they've got to restart playback all over again which is going to be even more annoying than sitting through an ident or still frame
[13:44:44] peper03: stuartm: I'm torn a bit here. On the one hand, being able to skip all the intros and other crud is great. On the other, there's always that possibility that something might not get initialised.
[13:46:13] sraue_ is now known as sraue
[13:46:18] peper03: stuartm: For some reason, kids DVDs often seem to be terrible for making you sit through several minutes of trailers before you can finally get to the main menu and start whatever it is the kids *actually* want to see. Impatient little ones are not a pleasure :)

[13:46:22] sraue (sraue!~stephan@xbmc/staff/sraue) has joined #mythtv
[13:49:35] peper03: stuartm: Thinking about it, it's probably done for the same reason they put sweets at kids' height by checkouts. The kids see something they didn't know existed and suddenly it's "can I have? can I have? But I neeeeeeed it!" :-o
[13:53:50] stuartm: peper03: with DVDs I own I generally end up ripping them, obviously requires plenty of disc space if you've got a large collection but with kids I guess it also avoids the possibility of scratched, sticky DVDs :)
[13:56:31] peper03: stuartm: That doesn't get round the problem of skipping UOPs, unless you mean ripping them to MKVs or whatever rather than ISO images.
[13:58:01] peper03: stuartm: I'm not sure if there is a good, all-round solution. I think we just get a 'STOP' from libdvdnav, don't we? If we could detect the error more accurately, we probably couldn't fix it but maybe we could display an error to the user along the lines of 'Error occurred. X prohibited operations were allowed that may have lead to the problem'. If the user can see when they've done something that would have been blocked, they've
[13:58:03] peper03: maybe got an idea of what to avoid.
[14:11:57] stuartm: peper03: I was suggesting ripping to mkv
[14:14:03] knightr (knightr!~knightr@mythtv/developer/knightr) has joined #mythtv
[14:14:19] stuartm: peper03: maybe a setting hidden under advanced allowing skipping, I'm wary about allowing it and then having users try again if it causes problems, that's the sort of thing that can very quickly become annoying to the average non-technical user who just wants to stick the disc in, press play and everything just works
[14:15:53] stuartm: I'm sure most users would understand if we told them why allowing skipping is a bad idea, after all they don't get to skip on their commercial DVD players so it's not like we're preventing something they can do elsewhere

[14:17:45] peper03: stuartm: I don't think I'd have a problem with a setting to ignore/enforce prohibited user operations. It's certainly tricky to explain succinctly exactly why skipping *can* cause problems (like a one-line error message) but providing the option to allow those operations to those users who understand the 'risks' would ease tension too!
[14:18:11] stuartm: after all not all still frames/trailers/idents are unskipable
[14:19:52] peper03: For those who enable the option and have a basic understanding, if they hit a problem, they just have to remember 'don't jump to the title menu on this DVD until you get to this point' or whatever.
[14:20:05] Seeker`: stuartm: appears that the build-debs stuff doesn't work the the nightly master builds, so going to have to build with the patch manually
[14:21:36] peper03: It's not perfect but you're basically saying, here's more freedom but it *may* allow you to do something that prevents clean playback, so if it does, don't do it :)
