[01:18:27] sphery: taylorr: I haven't forgotten about the testing I've promised you. I just haven't been able to repro the VDPAU pauses. I'm starting to think mine were cooling related (so only visible during the hot afternoons, and not the cooler evenings, when I've been watching recordings this week).
[01:19:57] taylorr: sphery: ok, I'd like to focus on the processEvent problem first since it's probably the reason for a large majority of the reports
[01:20:13] taylorr: we can look at other pause issues after that's been fixed

[02:12:58] danielk22: markk: I don't disagree with Bradley in theory. But in practice sub-classing QThread is oh so convenient when converting existing pthread code... I didn't realize Qt4.4 has a default run now.. that should avoid a lot of subclassing in a lot of cases.
[02:14:24] danielk22: Threading with Qt4 is a lot better than Qt3, but it still feels bolted on without as much thought put in as there should have been.
[02:19:06] Andy50 (Andy50!andy50@173-23-19-191.client.mchsi.com) has joined #mythtv
[02:20:54] markk: danielk22: the worst of the confusion is when you subclass and then start using signals/slots etc (which is unlikely to be the case when converting pthread code) – once you've suppressed the inevitable thread related warnings, you then realise that nothing is actually running in the new thread:)
[02:22:04] markk: I think the idea of creating a default QThread, creating objects and moving those objects to the thread is highly intuitive. but it assumes you're using qobjects for everything.
[02:22:08] danielk22: markk: heh, and then you add the "moveToThread()" to the thread.. Yes I went through this very realization last year :)
[02:24:27] danielk22: markk: It is appropriate when whatever you are writing is event driven.. When it is not you should either be using something like QRunnable with a threadpool or simply overriding QThread::run().

[03:08:16] sphery: FWIW, I think http://www.develer.com/promo/workshop/enhanci . . . hreading.pdf is also a good read--just for getting to know all the different thread-related classes in Qt4.4+ (from QThread and QRunnable to QFuture and QtConcurrent and QFutureSynchronizer and QFutureWatcher). That said, I still haven't applied anything I learned from it, but...  :)
