[14:01:40] | mack-: | cybrNaut: if your files have multiple audio streams, the tv might be trying to play one it doesn't handle. |
[14:04:44] | mack-: | I've not paid attention to dlna recently (who has? :) ), but the traditional way to get foolproof playback on dlna devices was to have a transcoder to force the files to be exactly what the player wants. They've historically been pretty picky on what they want. |
[14:06:26] | mack-: | https://support.vizio.com/s/article/DLNA?language=en_US has a link to the one file that vizio apparently tests against :) Makes sure your input is similar |
[15:00:37] | cybrNaut: | mack-: thanks. All the support.vizio.com pages i've come across have an error: <Error> |

[15:23:31] | cybrNaut: | ah, seems to be a Tor block. It's the strangest tor block I've ever seen. I had to use a vpn to reach the webpage without errors, but was able to download the mp4 itself over tor (torsocks wget 'http://cdn.vizio.com/misc/KBImages/DLNA/VIZIO720ptestvideo.mp4') |
[15:25:33] | cybrNaut: | mack-: you're not the 1st person i've heard comment on DLNA being obsolete. What's the successor? |
[15:44:33] | mack-: | cybrNaut: I don't think it's obsolete, as it has its place. But to have it work well, use DLNA-certified components, which MythTV isn't and I assume the Vizio isn't either. The successor is smarter streaming I suppose — client and server both in a controlled setting, like Myth FE & BE or Plex. Or dedicated media players like Roku or Kodi. |
[15:50:04] | mack-: | I personally don't really like mythfrontend, so I have kodi clients (libreelec on Pi for one TV, and MrMC on appleTV on the other) for playing the video library. It also handles live tv via kodi pvr.mythtv plugin. |
[15:54:19] | cybrNaut: | indeed it would be better to have myth fe or kodi, but that requires a separate box, correct? I don't see a mythTV or kodi option in the mythTV app choices. Maybe i could find one to side-load, but I get the impression Vizio is rather locked down. |
[15:58:35] | mack-: | correct. Separate box. I personally prefer my TVs to be "lobotomized" since there are so many possible security issues with smart connected TVs. My TVs have network disconnected and network connection only through the boxes I have more control over. |

[16:01:43] | cybrNaut: | i'm with you there. I kept my TV outside the firewall because I don't trust it. I was recently forced to put it on the LAN in order to see the DLNA services, but I'm not comfortable with this. OTOH, i hate to buy hardware I don't need. I might try to put the TV back outside the firewall, and add a firewall hole just for DLNA |
[16:05:40] | cybrNaut: | this article gives interesting insight an all the trackers that Roku and Firesticks have => https://blog.acolyer.org/2020/02/10/watching-you-watch Makes me wonder if the TV would be sending to Vizio HQ the Titles that I watch using DLNA |

[18:24:17] | cybrNaut: | mack-: you mention Plex, but i think that's not simply a server and client. It seems to be some kind of cloud service because the Plex app is included on my TV but it wants login creds |
[18:25:36] | mack-: | plex has a wide variety of function. Unless something changed recently, it can still function without cloud. |
[18:26:04] | mack-: | ugh. need more caffeine or something. You hopefully know what I mean, though. |
[18:26:46] | mack-: | https://support.plex.tv/articles/207538527-do . . . eam-locally/ |
[18:27:09] | mack-: | whether you can skip on TV app or not, *shrug* |
[18:28:41] | cybrNaut: | interesting.. maybe it wouldn't require a login if I were running a Plex server. Perhaps I should look into that. |
[18:33:13] | cybrNaut: | on 2nd though, MythTV seems to keep metadata in its db and not in the media files, so if something else serves mythtv-created recordings, i suppose it would just show cryptic filenames. |
[18:33:20] | cybrNaut: | *thought |
