[13:55:25] SirScott: simonpatapon: yes, my tuner has arrived!
[13:55:59] simonpatapon: good good
[13:56:07] simonpatapon: does it work as excepected
[13:56:15] SirScott: 90%
[13:56:45] SirScott: one main broadcast station is giving me 'channel unavailable' in the kodi frontend
[13:57:24] simonpatapon: i want OTA on my car adnoird head unit
[13:57:33] simonpatapon: i think i would need the android tuner
[13:57:59] SirScott: not just a linux one?
[13:58:03] simonpatapon: https://www.mygica.com/products/tv-tuner/
[13:58:19] simonpatapon: i'm not 100% sur a usb one would work on android
[13:58:31] simonpatapon: sorry for off topicking
[13:58:57] SirScott: they look so cute!
[13:59:40] SirScott: what headunit do you have?
[13:59:59] simonpatapon: its called T9
[14:00:30] simonpatapon: https://i.imgur.com/tZmd7uf.jpg
[14:01:38] simonpatapon: it has netflix and youtube but would be great to have OTA while driving
[14:01:44] simonpatapon: so i can save data
[14:02:29] SirScott: wow, is that OEM? looks stock. nicely integrated!
[14:03:35] simonpatapon: non OEM
[14:04:24] simonpatapon: its a kit, all included, expensive but well finished
[14:05:12] simonpatapon: do you have an android phone and a usb A to C to test your tuner on a phone?
[14:05:39] simonpatapon: cause these speacilly for android are expensive
[14:06:42] SirScott: hmmm, might be lacking the A to C cable, I will look
[14:07:27] SirScott: at least, a female A to C
[14:08:40] simonpatapon: thx would be great
[14:11:17] SirScott: in about 10 minutes i can go hunt for cables and adapters. what will i need for my phone to verify functionality?
[14:12:41] simonpatapon: i dont know :/
[14:12:58] simonpatapon: those especially for android have an app
[14:13:25] simonpatapon: but i dont know what your's will be recognised as
[14:13:33] SirScott: maybe just vlc?
[14:14:04] simonpatapon: yes if its recognise as a capture device
[14:14:38] SirScott: i think if it's not recognized, then we can eliminate it as a potential cheaper tuner for you
[14:14:44] simonpatapon: yes
[14:15:05] simonpatapon: the head unit was already 600$CAD so throwin another 150 makes me cold
[14:15:32] simonpatapon: 4% of the car worth lol
[14:16:12] SirScott: ah but hours of entertainment!
[14:18:30] SirScott: ok let me go see if I can find cables
[14:18:43] simonpatapon: no rush thanks for your help
[14:25:25] SirScott: found an adapter!
[14:25:38] simonpatapon: !
[14:27:41] SirScott: now i'm not seeing anything with vlc that would imply it can use a usb tuner.
[14:27:53] SirScott: on the desktop version, you can select a capture device, but that seems to be missing in the android app
[14:30:39] Scopeuk: android doesent ship with many usb drivers integrated, typically it is done in userland instead inside an application. you may need to find an application designed for the job
[14:30:53] Scopeuk: it would need to be geared towards your device however
[14:36:25] SirScott: well, i ran the tvpad app instead and it prompted me to allow access to the hauppage device
[14:36:48] SirScott: but even after granting access, when i went to live tv, it said no devices found :(
[14:37:00] simonpatapon: ok thx for you tries
[14:37:04] simonpatapon: i think i'm doomed
[14:38:00] SirScott: you betcha, i think you might could eliminate the 'Hauppauge Digital TV Tuner for Xbox One TV Tuners and Video Capture 1578' from your list

[14:48:13] SirScott: previously i had scanned for channels. should i try 'fetch channels from listings source' instead?
[15:11:17] SirScott: rescanned, it found that channel again and inserted it as a new one. now when i tune to it, it at least plays, albeit with buffering

[15:15:17] SirScott: how could i verify? according to tvfool (and my gut...), it should be a high powered signal. it's a local main station.

[15:19:22] psymin: great news :)
[15:20:00] SirScott: i'm having issues with one channel in particular but I just rescanned and it may be resolved. TBD. Then I need to figure out how to edit the channels.
[15:20:24] simonpatapon: you can in mythtv-setup
[15:24:41] SirScott: another thing, with time-shift, is there a way to enable previews when scanning forward / back?

[18:49:23] SirScott: ok i'm a bit stumped. i've downloaded an icon and have placed it here: /home/mythtv/.mythtv/channels/abc.png
[18:49:41] psymin: I believe it needs to be .jpg
[18:49:48] psymin: and you can manually associate it via mythtv-setup
[18:49:58] SirScott: ah, that might explain it
[18:50:09] SirScott: i did the association, but the URL gives a 404 when requesting it
[18:50:19] SirScott: e.g. http://mythtv.blargh.home:6544/Guide/GetChann . . . mp;Height=57 --> 404
[18:50:24] SirScott: and i see that path in the sql dump
[18:50:28] SirScott: i'll try jpg :)
[18:50:53] psymin: I used "mogrify -format jpg *.png"
[18:51:50] psymin: maybe png is supported?
[18:56:10] SirScott: SELECT channum,chanid,icon FROM channel WHERE visible AND chanid=10701 ORDER BY channum+0; --> | 7_1 | 10701 | /home/mythtv/.mythtv/channels/abc.jpg |
[18:56:32] mack-: I set up my channel icons years ago, and at some point half of them broke, but I didn't care enough to find out why :)
[18:57:07] SirScott: converted to jpg, the url still gives a 404, and i don't see anything in mythtv-backend logs
[18:57:36] mack-: but looking at your message, might want to make sure the file permissions are correct on abc.jpg, etc.
[18:57:52] SirScott: it's 644, for mythtv:mythtv
[18:58:05] psymin: mythtbackend runs as mythtv I assume?
[18:58:09] SirScott: it does, yes
[19:00:59] psymin: try w/o a Height variable maybe?
[19:01:12] mack-: if it's trying plain http instead of passing along some other way via API, apache might not be configured to serve things in /home/mythtv, or in .files. Maybe store the files in /var/www/chanicons/ or something
[19:02:33] mack-: (or configure apache, but I tend to reconfigure apache for wider access as a last resort)
[19:03:50] psymin: port 6544 is for the services api, I don't believe it is served via apache
[19:04:24] SirScott: ok, set upnp verbose logging. definitely some weirdness going on
[19:04:33] mack-: oh, yeah, I missed the port up in the 404 message
[19:04:47] SirScott: and i'd love to paste the message, cept my screen just went black, haha.
[19:05:07] mack-: mythtv throws a WHOLE lot of warnings that don't look so much like warnings
[19:05:28] SirScott: this was legit, it was saying that it couldn't find the file, but it had the file name in there twice
[19:05:40] SirScott: eg /path/to/abc.png/path/to/abc.png
[19:06:41] SirScott: GetImageFile – File Does not exist //home/mythtv/.mythtv/channels/abc.png//home/mythtv/.mythtv/channels/abc.png.
[19:06:52] mack-: you said you did do the icon chooser in mythtv-setup?
[19:06:53] SirScott: which yeah, that's not going to exist :)
[19:07:21] SirScott: first i had tried downloading the images automatically; none of those worked
[19:07:37] mack-: btw, make sure mythtvbackend is not running when you run mythtv-setup
[19:07:42] SirScott: then i downloaded manually, stored them in the /home/mythtv/.mythtv/channels directory
[19:07:54] SirScott: then i edited the path via mythtv-setup
[19:08:03] SirScott: and the sql dump from the database seems OK...
[19:08:34] SirScott: https://bpaste.net/5R3A
[19:09:43] SirScott: ok, i'll reboot my machine so i can re-run mythtv-setup and make sure mythtv-backend is not running
[19:10:01] SirScott: after doing this, will i need mythtvfilldatabase (or whatever it is...)
[19:12:13] mack-: hrm. 'icon' contains relative paths in my database. But then, half of mine don't work, so take that with a grain of salt :)
[19:13:20] SirScott: alright, in mythtv-setup, channel options – common – icon. The path as written there looks correct. (Doesn't show up twice.)
[19:13:56] SirScott: no prompt to save, but i am running mythfilldatabase
[19:15:03] mack-: btw, SirScott, where you are expecting to see icons? Somewhere in pvr.mythtv, or are you looking at mythweb atm?
[19:15:39] SirScott: ultimately in the frontend (kodi mythtv pvr client.)
[19:18:31] mack-: I'm guessing icons are supposed to show in pvr.mythtv in the Channels window. The channels I have with icons set show as nothing/transparent. Ones with no icon set show as black boxes with old movie camera icons. I've honestly never paid attention to those. I rarely use this window — I typically use Guide and Recordings in the addon.
[19:19:35] SirScott: ah ok, that's good to know. thank you!
[19:21:12] SirScott: so even if the API call doesn't return a 404, it sounds like i still could wind up with no icons!
[19:22:53] mack-: well, like I said, mine aren't exactly right :) My backend isn't busy until this evening, so I'm exploring.
[19:23:37] mack-: My channel icons, for the channels I've selected icons for, show fine in mythtv-setup and a real mythfrontend. They don't in mythweb or pvr.mythtv.
[19:24:33] mack-: these were added via Icon Download, most likely.
[19:24:45] markk_ (markk_!~mark@host109-151-194-111.range109-151.btcentralplus.com) has quit (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)
[19:25:03] mack-: and have just image filenames in the database, not full paths
[19:26:33] SirScott: i guess i could just try the filename as opposed to the full path.
[19:27:45] mack-: aha. reading the wiki, which it seems you have done already, and my icons probably broke in the 0.27 upgrade
[19:30:50] SirScott: hey, the icons now show up in mythtv-setup, in the channel editor!
[19:32:00] SirScott: and now they show up via the API call!
[19:32:56] SirScott: and they show up in kodi!
[19:33:07] SirScott: lesson learned — don't include the full path, just the filename.
[19:33:31] SirScott: jeepers.
[19:33:55] SirScott: it probably says that in the wiki and i just missed it :(
[19:38:45] mack-: I don't think it's specified exactly. I think the writer assumed someone would have at least one successful downloaded icon so they could follow the pattern
[19:40:10] mack-: I think I found my problem. An old symlink :)
[19:40:23] SirScott: awesome, hopefully fixing that makes it work again!
[19:41:56] SirScott: mack-: since you use pvr.mythtv, maybe you would know if this is possible...
[19:42:21] SirScott: when jumping forward / back in a time shifted stream, can you see a preview pop up of what's happening at that point of time?
[19:42:38] mack-: btw, it looks like png is fine. I see some of my more recent icon downloads are png
[19:43:19] SirScott: good to know!
[19:43:34] mack-: I'll check on the scrub for you when I start my backend up again. gimme a few.
[19:48:53] mack-: yep. that fixed my icons. Thanks for making me take the time to look at mine :)
[19:49:46] mack-: oof, these are hideous in kodi. Time to find/make some pngs with transparency or something
[19:50:38] SirScott: hah, glad it's worked out for you too!
[19:51:05] mack-: SirScott: I think preview is only designed to work if playback is paused.
[19:52:04] SirScott: oh, i didn't think to try that.
[19:52:22] SirScott: I was watching something, paused, then wanted to skip commercials when I started playing it again
[19:54:53] mack-: if I'm watching something I haven't comflagged or cut the commercials from, I usually just tap the -> button twice for 30s or thrice for 60s intervals.
[19:55:34] SirScott: cool, that's what i wound up doing. not as nice though as the youtube tv that i'm trying to replace, where it'd show the pop up and you could see "yes, the commercials are done!"
[19:55:40] mack-: or if it's one of those shows with 4:30 commercial breaks, I tap more :)
[19:56:25] mack-: that's what mythtv's commercial detection is for. But that might make a RaspPi explode.
[19:56:41] SirScott: and does that work for live tv?
[19:57:44] mack-: I've honestly never tried it. There is an option to start commflagging immediately, so that might be what you're wanting.
[19:58:09] SirScott: i do have a "beefy" server, so i'm debating trying to share the USB device over the network to the server, and *it* can function as the backend and do the commercial detection

[20:07:11] mack-: found the option I was thinking of. Start auto-commercial-detection jobs when recording starts: https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Setup_General#Job_Queue_.28Global.29
[20:07:58] mack-: I'm not sure if that would apply to Live TV.
[20:09:10] mack-: a workaround might be to click Record on a show you want to do this on, then go into Recordings and start watching it.
[20:22:13] SirScott: mack-: nice! thanks for that link, i'll check that out and try it, plus the possible work around too.
[20:24:00] mack-: My usual TV watching is watching after recorded and commercial cut. The little bit of Live TV I do is either Muted through commercials or Paused for several minutes then skipped.
[20:28:07] psymin: if you're using the kodi-pvr-mythtv addon, the changes in kodi 19 are awesome. Visual indication of where the commercials are.  :)
[20:30:08] SirScott: that sounds nice! using core elec so right now only have kodi 18.5. unless there's a nightly / beta somewhere that has 19...
[20:32:26] psymin: https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/pull/15767#issue-262011074
[20:32:38] psymin: that is example output
[20:51:21] SirScott: that looks nice!
[21:24:29] psymin: mack-, if that works on livetv that would be quite amazing
[21:24:57] mack-: indeed :)

[21:39:19] SirScott: oooh, just shared the USB tuner from the rpi over the network to my server
[21:39:58] SirScott: before i go further... am i missing something in the mythtv architecture that might allow for dumb/light weight tuner clients and then I can run the transcoding / commercial detection on a master backend?
[21:40:36] SirScott: could i instead just make this rpi a slave backend and configure it to NOT do anything other than grab & record?
[21:43:52] psymin: you'd want to offload commercial flagging to another slave backend?
[21:44:23] SirScott: maybe i should have made my server the master backend, and the rpi a slave one. then configure commercial flagging to happen on the master backend only.
[21:47:07] psymin: Something like NFS would be handy for that it seems. Some type of filesystem sharing.
[21:54:52] SirScott: not sure the rpi has enough grunt to do commercial detection: https://bpaste.net/MDUA
