[22:09:06] friendofafriend: jm|laptop: Indeed, but I'd like to cut the resource usage of running it down to the quick.
[22:09:51] jm|laptop: friendofafriend: hmm. I see. What do you like about it? It's basically dragging info from some weather api afaik. You could recreate it in say a browser window?
[22:10:24] friendofafriend: I'd just like to make an MPEG-TS that I can SAP annouce around my network for Windows and tablet users.
[22:11:02] jm|laptop: your own Weather Channel? :)
[22:11:12] ** friendofafriend is so busted. **
[22:11:34] friendofafriend: Yes, and I've got a weather radio here to put its audio in.
[22:12:47] jm|laptop: ffmpeg sounds like your friend here. I'm not yet sure how you'd generate the stills, update them at intervals and push them to the ts
[22:12:56] jm|laptop: but Ceefax managed it
[22:13:13] friendofafriend: Ceefax? Did someone do something like this already?
[22:13:30] jm|laptop: no nm I was being obtuse
[22:13:48] friendofafriend: I'm sorry if I missed the reference, I'm rather obtuse myself.
[22:14:43] friendofafriend: And indeed ffmpeg is a dear friend, I've already got the code for all the other parts. I'd just like to make as thin a Debian virtual machine as possible to do the service.
[22:15:32] friendofafriend: I guess I should say the appropriate command line arguments, a RTL-SDR tuned to my local NOAA frequency, and the like.
[22:15:35] jm|laptop: well. Depending how you render the 'pages', ffmpeg can loop through image files and transmit it as video
[22:15:54] jm|laptop: ffmpeg -loop 1 -t 1 -i 1.jpg -loop 1 -t -1 -i 2.jpg etc.
[22:15:59] friendofafriend: I've actually been using ffmpeg with a FIFO and just cramming PNGs down its gullet.
[22:16:32] jm|laptop: if your script rendered and overwrote those images in a timely fashion I guess that might work
[22:17:11] friendofafriend: The audio quickly updates after a change, the slideshow is longer. I think that's just a matter of reducing the FIFO's buffer.
[22:17:25] jm|laptop: a billion years ago I seem to recollect using some perl library and XML/html to render an HTML 'page' and then extract that to an image
[22:17:47] jm|laptop: if audio is just a feed from the radio you just mux that in surely?
[22:18:26] jm|laptop: this is basically entirely not what MythWeather does. We're probably in danger of being kicked for OT :)
[22:18:28] friendofafriend: I'm actually using a FIFO for that also, so I can take over the WX radio for Big Brother messages.
[22:18:52] jm|laptop: ugh
[22:19:14] friendofafriend: Well, to bring it back to very much on topic, I'd actually love to use MythWeather because my family is familiar with it from the living room.
[22:19:31] friendofafriend: And actually, they rather like it!  :)
[22:19:45] jm|laptop: friendofafriend: well without trying to be a dick, it's all there in the source code. How good is your qt programming?
[22:21:30] jm|laptop: (I didn't realise it "streamed" anything by the way. I thought it just aggregated and rotated. I have never used it!)
[22:21:46] friendofafriend: That's not a dick thing to say. I'm good enough to have at the code blocks and maybe whip something up. I was just wondering if someone might have an elegant solution.
[22:21:58] friendofafriend: It does just aggregate and rotate, this is very much true.
[22:22:21] friendofafriend: Where MythWeather gets a little tricky is in running an animated GIF of a weather map from Accuweather.
[22:23:02] friendofafriend: My stream is only 1.5FPS, so I fear this will complicate matters.
[22:23:58] jm|laptop: granted. You'd need to grock the GIF to see how many frames it is, if it's not always a fixed amount and wait that long before you did something next
[22:24:50] jm|laptop: I'm also lacking ffmpeg and cine-fu here. There might be some kickass libraries already let you "make your own TV channel" :)
[22:26:01] jm|laptop: if it didn't have to be a video stream, I'd think a browser-based solution would be the way but I'm probably biased as I script such things much more than I code properly
[22:35:37] mad_enz (mad_enz!~mad_enz@2607:fea8:bdf:e784:5055:c0f6:4350:b709) has quit (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
[22:39:44] friendofafriend: I'm already pushing a bunch of video across the network in multicast that I'm getting from a bunch of tuners. And some music coming from FM, received by an few RTL-SDRs, that has a cute slide show as the video.
[22:41:19] friendofafriend: "A few RTL-SDRs", rather.
[22:42:55] friendofafriend: And maybe the family will give me less heat for cutting the cord if the bill gets much higher.  ;)
[22:43:48] jm|laptop: rtl-sdr chipsets tend to offer DVB. How pirate/obscure is the FM radio station you're streaming?!
[22:47:28] friendofafriend: You're right, the DVB-T does me little good unless I'm modulating my own signal out with something like GNURadio. I've got some USB and PCI TV tuners that do ATSC.
[22:47:50] friendofafriend: ClearQAM, too, but there's nothing in the clear on my cable provider anymore. I used to at least get CSPAN2 and 3.
[22:48:34] friendofafriend: The FM radio is very handy and I've got HD Radio coming out of it, also.
[22:48:47] mad_enz (mad_enz!~mad_enz@2607:fea8:bdf:e784:f929:b0a7:1d66:cd9e) has joined #mythtv-users
[22:51:04] friendofafriend: It's neither pirate nor obscure FM radio, unfortunately. But there is some classical music and classic rock.  ;)
[22:51:14] jm|laptop: friendofafriend: dvb-tools, dvblast etc. have a few handy things
[22:51:21] jm|laptop: no scary frontend required
[22:51:47] jm|laptop: I naively Just Expected that you'd have a handy and free DVB-T[2] service just because I do here :)
[22:52:01] friendofafriend: They're wonderful, I use mumudvb and love it. The slideshows to music are just ffmpeg with minisapserver.
[22:52:49] friendofafriend: I cannot articulate how perfectly jealous I am of your DVB-T signal. I'd kill a lower life form to use these $7 RTL-SDRs for their intended purpose.
[22:54:28] jm|laptop: we're veering wildly OT again but I was playing with two of my rtl-sdrs just this week because I invested in a couple of freezer thermometers. They use ~433MHz and I wanted to plot the temperature to RRD for S&G
[22:55:58] friendofafriend: rtl_433 is wonderful for that purpose, and I've done the same for my deep freezers. These days I use a DHT22 and ESP8266 to free up the SDR for something else.
[22:56:20] jm|laptop: I wondered if I'd get the oil level meter and the door bell too but I think my aerial^Wlength of wire I found in the garage is the wrong length. I only got one reading from the one stat :(
[22:58:11] friendofafriend: We're lucky to have FCC IDs on our meters here, so it's easy to tell what frequency they use. Maybe rtlamr would find the meter you're looking for?
[22:59:10] jm|laptop: does that meander through some likely frequencies and listen for stuff?
[23:00:07] jm|laptop: rtl_433 recognises my stats but not the oil (despite it supporting others by the same manufacturer) and seemingly not the doorbell
[23:00:19] friendofafriend: rtl_433 is for just things at 433MHz, but there's also some utility meters in the 800MHz band. Here, it's called ISM for industrial, scientific, and medical.
[23:00:36] jm|laptop: but I'm also very stupid WRT things telegraphic
[23:00:55] jm|laptop: I'll bookmark it for later. Thanks.

[23:01:37] friendofafriend: If you can find the device's transmission in the RTL-SDR's waterfall, there are lots of great tutorials for working with it.
[23:02:33] friendofafriend: And oh what a plugin that would be, to watch your meters and fridge temperatures. Maybe a graph of the indoor temps and A/C usage?
[23:03:06] jm|laptop: meh. I need to get one of the analyser tools to not segfault all the time on me so I can perhaps discover what is in and around the valid frequencies
[23:03:42] friendofafriend: I tend to use gqrx on a happy little Linux Mint box, and it works great.
[23:03:43] jm|laptop: and cut that metal coat hanger to size for my coax aerial ;)
[23:04:13] jm|laptop: further bookmarking
[23:04:49] friendofafriend: I'm tracking planes by ADS-B with something similiar, just a CAT5 pair cut to length.

[23:05:41] jm|laptop: do you have 144 cans of beans in a bunker somewhere too?
