[19:08:21] | twiggy2cents: | I am having some problems from ATSC channels, channels that are of great signal and quality are creating damaged recordings. I am using HDHR4-US's and I am getting recordings with bad signal artifacts. Can this type of failure happen from network congestions or hdd failures or is it limited to bad signal? |
[19:32:32] | Kwisher: | twiggy2cents: does livetv work fine? |
[19:33:25] | Kwisher: | i have one hdhrprime and 2 hdhr duals that work fine |
[19:34:21] | Kwisher: | i have not problem with multiple recordings going at the same time |
[19:37:49] | twiggy2cents: | yeah seems to, my issue is that I never think to check when the recordings are happening |

[19:38:18] | twiggy2cents: | I cant imagine a near perfect signal according to the hdhr config can drop out so much that I get bad recordings but maybe |

[19:38:45] | Kwisher: | is your lan gigabit? |
[19:45:54] | twiggy2cents: | Yeah but the HDHR4's are only 100mbit |
[19:46:20] | twiggy2cents: | I dont think its network congestion though. I have two and have done 4 streams at once with no issues |
[19:46:42] | Kwisher: | hard disks? |
[19:46:52] | twiggy2cents: | I feel like I really need to be on top of the recordings and try to see signal strength when its recording |
[19:47:03] | twiggy2cents: | Just 3.5 sata hdd |
[19:47:22] | twiggy2cents: | One is failing, I just ordered one for it |
[19:47:50] | Kwisher: | that could be the issue |
[19:47:52] | twiggy2cents: | It just doesnt seem like corrupt file as much as bad signal but my signal seems good |
[19:48:00] | twiggy2cents: | I am going to replace the hdd and see I suppose |
[19:48:29] | Kwisher: | can you remove the failing drive from the recording pool? |
[19:49:16] | Kwisher: | in the b/e setup |
[19:49:21] | twiggy2cents: | yeah, I probably should do that. I have two drives on that machine and I feel if I remove it I am going to lose a lot of shows until I migrate it to the new one. |
[19:49:42] | twiggy2cents: | Unless I can remove it from the recording pool but not a storage group |
[19:49:54] | twiggy2cents: | I have them defined under the default sg for recording |

[19:56:58] | Kwisher: | so manually play some video samplings from both drives to see if you see a pattern of file problems related to the failing drive |
[19:57:57] | Kwisher: | you can move recordings from the failing drive to the other drive if you have the free space |
[20:17:04] | twiggy2cents: | I dont have the space, I will try to pull some samples from each drive. The new drive should be here in a few days so I will probably just hold off on retiring the drive till the new one gets here. |
[20:36:34] | twiggy2cents: | On a side note, it looks like home built dvr systems that support linux might be growing. |
[20:37:05] | twiggy2cents: | I saw that plex offers dvr, with the plex pass $5/mo subscription and hdhomerun is working on their own |
[20:37:35] | twiggy2cents: | I thought about the plex one but I've been with Mythtv for so long and it offers so much more. |
[20:37:45] | Kwisher: | yep |
[20:38:02] | twiggy2cents: | Not that it needs to change but its a shame that development has slowed down to the point of mostly bug fixes and not much feature additions |

[21:24:08] | twiggy2cents: | I think it might be network related, I am watching a channel that the hdhr config says is 100% signal and quality. It still goes blocky intermittently. Looks identical to a bad signal |
[21:24:49] | Kwisher: | is your livetv being stored on the same drive? |
[21:25:15] | Kwisher: | failing drive |
[21:25:36] | twiggy2cents: | This is using the HDHR config. It creates a UDP stream |
[21:25:44] | twiggy2cents: | To a different computer |
[21:25:58] | Kwisher: | ahh, not using the f/e |
[21:26:25] | twiggy2cents: | correct, technically not using mythtv at all |
[21:27:08] | Kwisher: | could be a bad nic on the b/e or a flaky switch ??? |
[21:27:23] | twiggy2cents: | So the HDHR' |
[21:27:26] | twiggy2cents: | oops hangon |
[21:27:39] | Kwisher: | well, the b/e wouldn't be the issue with using the hdhr config |
[21:28:41] | twiggy2cents: | So the HDHR's are hooked up to the router, then there is some switches throughout the house for the rest. When streaming over wireless AC to a laptop I see no issue. Now that means I need to see if it is isolated to the computer I'm using or my wired network |
[21:30:18] | Kwisher: | hardwire a laptop to each switch & router |
[22:01:38] | twiggy2cents: | Well I have some news, albeit kind of bad. If I take a computer and plug it straight into the router and the HDHR to the router the stream will still get artifacts, at the same time wireless works fine. If I plug the HDHR straight into the computer and do link-local the stream plays with no issues |
[22:02:25] | twiggy2cents: | It looks like an issue with the router. I'm running DD-WRT right now, I might see about updating the f/w. I love dd-wrt but updating the firmware is so cryptic |
[22:03:07] | Kwisher: | how old is the router? |
[22:04:24] | twiggy2cents: | Not that old. It is a tp-link archer c7 |
[22:04:28] | twiggy2cents: | purchased it in '15 |
[22:04:50] | Kwisher: | i assume gig switching? |
[22:05:07] | twiggy2cents: | Yep |
[22:05:19] | Kwisher: | got a spare to test with? |
[22:06:02] | twiggy2cents: | yeah, I just dont want to dig it out. It is old reliable, wrt54g |
[22:06:20] | Kwisher: | lol, i have a couple of those |

[22:49:36] | twiggy2cents: | Alright so I updated the firmware of the router and there was no change, did a factory reset(I have a lot of saved settings that I nuked with this process) and the concern is gone. |
[22:50:58] | twiggy2cents: | I think I will try restoring the backup and see if it goes back to screwed up. If it does then I will have to reconfigure by hand. At least I found what is causing the video issues. It's crazy, the concern looked identical to bad signal but ended up being the router screwing everything up |
