This can connect and browse my mythbackend installation over uPnP fine. However, playback of a song only lasts 2'36" before it stops and progresses to the next song. How do I get mythbackend to spit out what's going wrong (assuming I can't access debug from the Yamaha unit)?

[12:45:20] Alberto_80: chrism0dwk Hi, it says "Mythtv could not connect to the database"
[12:46:30] chrism0dwk: So first thing to check is that MySQL (the database engine) is running. Open a terminal, and type: ps aux | grep mysql
[12:46:41] Alberto_80: The default user is "mythtv" and the password is also "mythtv"
[12:46:44] Alberto_80: Ok

[12:49:10] RedPenguin: hello all
[12:49:19] Alberto_80: RedPenguin Hello
[12:49:45] RedPenguin: Was wondering if anybody knew what would be good to check as myself and a friend both running MythTV using HDHomeRuns, every once and a while our machines don't record unless we reboot the system
[12:50:01] RedPenguin: curious if anybody experienced this as we see nothing really strange in the logs
[12:50:28] RedPenguin: Everything will be fine, then maybe "too long to tune" or "failed to record" will occur
[12:53:09] chrism0dwk: Alberto_80 so the db is running. Next thing to do is to monitor the console output when you run mythtv-setup. Applications --> Utilities --> Console.
[12:53:39] Alberto_80: chrism0dwk Ok :-)
[12:54:13] chrism0dwk: Alberto_80 ...also possibly tail the log specified for mysql: /usr/local/mysql/data/mysqld.local.err
[12:57:27] Alberto_80: I uninstalled Mythtv, so I'm reinstalling it again, sorry for the waiting...
[13:03:11] Alberto_80: chrism0dwk When I type mythtv-setup in console, it returns: Command not found
[13:05:38] Alberto_80: I can't enter /usr/local/mysql/data directory, "Permission denied"
[13:06:31] chrism0dwk: You'll need to sudo to root (presumably your account is set up as an administrator?)
[13:06:50] chrism0dwk: i.e. sudo tail -f /usr/local/mysql/data...etc.
[13:07:16] Alberto_80: chrism0dwk Oh, ok. Sorry. :)
[13:07:18] chrism0dwk: n.b. be careful with sudo — you can wreck things on your machine if you're not careful.
[13:09:18] Alberto_80: chrism0dwk http://pastebin.com/DXmugBzk
[13:13:38] chrism0dwk: Alberto_80 Hmm, it looks to me like mythtv-setup is using your username to connect, rather than 'mythtv'. To be sure, can you tail the log in realtime (sudo tail -f /usr/local/...etc) and see if the 'alberto-mac' line appears when you run mythtv-setup?
[13:17:40] Alberto_80: chrism0dwk It doesn't appear when I run mythtv-setup
[13:18:09] Alberto_80: No new line appears when I run mythtv-setup
[13:18:49] Alberto_80: It's very strange...
[13:19:55] chrism0dwk: Okay, that probably means the issue is with mythtv-setup looking in the wrong place for the server? Is your Mac running a firewall?
[13:20:36] Alberto_80: chrism0dwk Yes, it is running a firewall.
[13:21:12] Alberto_80: Shall I disable the firewall?
[13:21:23] chrism0dwk: Yes, temporarily.
[13:21:28] Alberto_80: Ok :)
[13:21:58] Alberto_80: Done.
[13:23:39] Alberto_80: I'm going to try running mythtv-setup now...

[13:26:20] chrism0dwk: What happens if you run mythtv-setup from the command line? Do you get any useful output?
[13:28:52] Alberto_80: chrism0dwk I can't locate mythtv-setup programme, I mean I don't know its path.
[13:29:24] Alberto_80: And if I just type mythtv-setup in terminal, I get : Command not found.
[13:30:26] chrism0dwk: Okay, hang on. I'll install on my Mac (I only have a linux install currently).
[13:30:46] chrism0dwk: Where do you normally run mythtv-setup from?
[13:31:20] Alberto_80: chrism0dwk Thank you very much. I run mythtv-setup from Launchpad
[13:32:57] Alberto_80: I used to make MythTv work on Linux, but I'm a beginner when it comes to mac use.
[13:33:51] chrism0dwk: Okay, and did you install from the sourceforge package?
[13:35:30] Alberto_80: Yes, the exact file name is mythtv-pkg.27-Fixes-0.27.4–20150304.mpkg
[13:36:24] Alberto_80: I must have downloaded the wrong file...
[13:37:48] chrism0dwk: Ah, the Macports version. I see. Hmm, not sure I can help much in that case. I think the best thing to do is to try to locate mythtv-setup, and run it from the terminal. You can then hopefully see any error reporting output it produces. Good luck!
[13:40:10] Alberto_80: Thank you very much.
[13:40:14] Alberto_80: :)
[13:43:38] Alberto_80: chrism0dwk One last question... Should I uninstall the Macports version and install another one?

[13:44:26] Alberto_80: Since I'm a Mac beginner, I don't even know what Macports is.
[13:44:54] chrism0dwk: I would stay with the Macports version, and try to get it working. Macports is a repository of *nix software compiled for OSX :)
[13:46:26] Alberto_80: chrism0dwk Ok, thanks again. :)

[22:02:44] skd5aner: Hey everyone, long time...
[22:03:27] skd5aner: So, I've got an issue I've put up with for a long time, but kind of sick of it and want to resolve it. I've got a few custom rules, and a few standard rules, that are recording multiple showings per day
[22:03:52] skd5aner: most are sports or news related, where the same episode or series will air 5–10 times a day across multiple networks even
[22:04:00] skd5aner: SportsCenter, for example.
[22:04:13] skd5aner: However, I want to just find 1 episode per day...
[22:04:25] skd5aner: there used to be a rule for that, but it was removed I believe in .27....
[22:04:51] skd5aner: However, since upgrading to .28 many moons ago, now I'll get the same show to record many times per day
[22:05:07] skd5aner: How can I put a filter or clause or something to say, only record 1 per day
[22:05:19] skd5aner: the wiki says there's a filter, but it's not there
[22:08:00] skd5aner: so – advice?

[22:18:50] dekarl: trumee: worst case you can always use a RO filesystem with a RW overlay (think netbooting MiniMyth with a ramdisk)
[22:21:13] Kwisher: in .28, where do i set a default/global start early/end late recordings setting?
[22:22:19] dekarl: Kwisher: on the default recording rule template (and all rules that already exist)
[22:22:58] dekarl: ^- that's for the hard early/late that uses multirec to allow overlap for back-to-back shows
[22:23:02] Kwisher: dekarl: where do i find that?

[22:26:22] dekarl: its there with all recording rules under -> recordings -> recording rules
[22:27:14] dekarl: here its called "T Standard (Vorlage)" likely "T Default (Template)" in english, I have to search around
[22:28:34] Kwisher: f/e or b/e?
[22:29:55] dekarl: skd5aner: the release notes confirm your memories. https://code.mythtv.org/trac/changeset/a1f9793/mythtv has a message with an explanation of the alternatives
[22:30:03] dekarl: Kwisher: frontend
[22:30:59] Kwisher: i see where you can set it per recording but i want a global default for all recordings
[22:32:19] skd5aner: dekarl: hey, great to see you... thank you. I don't see daily rules in search, but let me look again
[22:33:33] dekarl: Kwisher: the global default for hard early/late works only for new rules, you can (and have to) adjust existing rules manually (obviously allowing you to have different extra time per rule. over here its between 5 and 45 minutes)
[22:34:20] dekarl: you can also set the "soft" early/late values. thats in the frontend, too, somewhere. But I would not recommend it as you end up with no early/late for back-to-back recordings
[22:35:52] skd5aner: dekarl: interestingly enough, when I look up my custom recording rule for sportcenter in mythweb, it is a " Find and record one showing of this title each day." rule
[22:35:57] skd5aner: but clearly, that is not working
