[00:10:13] Hydr0p0nX: if it helps ... i just renewed an old schedules direct subscription that doesn't have a channel lineup associated

[00:15:59] arrrghhh: I don't use schedules direct... but sure :P
[00:16:13] arrrghhh: I didn't realize there was an 'enable compression' checkbox on ssh
[00:16:29] arrrghhh: derp this is better already, now instead of 10 minutes between clicks it's like 5...
[00:16:39] arrrghhh: maybe. ugh
[00:26:43] arrrghhh: now it's sometimes bearable, sometimes not... I guess that's better than always unbearable.

[00:41:20] Roklobsta: nx woulda worked nice
[00:41:44] arrrghhh: Roklobsta, no de..............
[00:41:50] Roklobsta: i know...
[00:41:52] arrrghhh: vnc would've worked nice too
[00:41:54] arrrghhh: if I had a de
[00:42:06] Roklobsta: install fvwm do thing, uninstall fvwm
[00:42:16] arrrghhh: I still don't get why on a backend only setup I even need to use a GUI
[00:42:36] Roklobsta: i guess Its The Way It's Always Been Done Around Here.
[00:42:51] arrrghhh: hm
[00:43:05] arrrghhh: I'm new(ish) to myth, so I'm not used to how things are done here haha
[00:43:28] Roklobsta: well noone imagined it'd be made to work without DE
[00:43:42] arrrghhh: I
[00:43:46] Roklobsta: you could go and just edit the sql database directly
[00:43:50] arrrghhh: I can't be the only one who has a backend only setup
[00:43:55] Roklobsta: just you
[00:43:59] arrrghhh: lol
[00:44:02] Roklobsta: in the history of the universe
[00:44:14] Roklobsta: your mum always said you were difficult.
[00:44:19] arrrghhh: yea what to edit in the db is the issue
[00:44:23] arrrghhh: otherwise I totally woudl.
[00:44:25] arrrghhh: would even
[00:44:57] Roklobsta: even with DE mythbackendsetup is a completely poxy thing to drive
[00:45:03] twiggy2cents: just install a DE set it up and then remove the DE
[00:45:17] Roklobsta: designed for an IR remote control and a PS/2 keyboard
[00:45:29] twiggy2cents: Then future edits would be over ssh
[00:45:33] arrrghhh: twiggy2cents, that will not go well... install a DE, installs 5,000 packages
[00:45:40] Roklobsta: twm? fvwm?
[00:45:41] arrrghhh: remove de, uninstalls 1 package
[00:45:53] WhenInRome: how about a wm like fluxbox?
[00:45:53] Roklobsta: you already get QT along for the ride with mbe
[00:46:09] arrrghhh: I know, not happy about that but I didn't have a choice there
[00:46:14] twiggy2cents: I dont know what distro you are using but fedora has a remove with leaves add on that is "supposed" to remove that

[16:49:55] tgm4883: stuarta: no, it should log to /var/log/mythtv/
[16:50:12] tgm4883: arrrghhh: wait, why don't you use the mythtv user?
[16:50:17] bill6502: arrrghhh: I've never tried without --user, so yet again, no help here. that suggests you've got a 'custom' /etc/init/mythtv-backend.conf (nothing wrong with that) I recall that rsyslog controls where the logs go (when using --syslog localX) and that it's very fussy about directory permissions, not just the mode you mentioned (777.) When you did the --logpath /tmp, did you remove the --syslog too
[16:50:34] arrrghhh: tgm4883, I use my user
[16:50:47] tgm4883: arrrghhh: how are you staring the backend?
[16:50:52] arrrghhh: with my user
[16:51:00] tgm4883: arrrghhh: via command line?
[16:51:11] arrrghhh: tgm4883, no via the upstart script
[16:51:17] arrrghhh: I changed the USER= to my user
[16:51:20] tgm4883: arrrghhh: well don't do that :)
[16:51:27] arrrghhh: why...
[16:51:41] arrrghhh: I don't think I have a mythtv user
[16:51:45] tgm4883: arrrghhh: why would you?
[16:51:49] arrrghhh: if I do, it certainly isn't setup right
[16:51:59] arrrghhh: I would rather keep user accounts to a minimum
[16:52:03] tgm4883: arrrghhh: you installed the packages, you should have a mythtv user
[16:52:19] arrrghhh: the backend didn't start with the mythtv user IIRC
[16:52:26] bill6502: ls -l ~mythtv/.mythtv
[16:52:55] tgm4883: arrrghhh: well without any logs to verify or knowing anything about your setup, I can almost certainly say that you're doing it wrong
[16:53:04] arrrghhh: lol I would agree
[16:53:12] arrrghhh: I just want to know "what" I'm doing wrong :)
[16:54:23] bill6502: How about: tailf /var/log/syslog in one terminal session and starting the BE in another. Any messages?
[16:54:30] tgm4883: I'm not sure if it's better to start from scratch or try to undo what you've done. Can you tell me a little bit about your setup?
[16:54:51] bill6502 (bill6502!~bill@24-148-53-32.c3-0.alc-ubr1.chi-alc.il.cable.rcn.com) has left #mythtv-users ()
[16:55:08] arrrghhh: tgm4883, ubuntu server, had .28 working fine but had issues with the webui
[16:55:15] arrrghhh: uninstalled .28 (purge) and deleted the db
[16:55:27] arrrghhh: reinstalled .27 from mythbuntu repo's
[16:55:59] tgm4883: ok
[16:56:14] tgm4883: arrrghhh: can you pastebin the output of 'dpkg -l | grep myth'
[16:56:56] arrrghhh: http://hastebin.com/kucixejala.vhdl
[16:57:17] arrrghhh: it's a standalone backend, the FE is a rpi2 running kodi
[16:59:02] tgm4883: ok that looks good, how about pastebin of 'mount'
[16:59:04] arrrghhh: which the backend seemed to record a show and do commflag... it even appears commflag worked
[16:59:20] arrrghhh: http://hastebin.com/jawikaxiza.hs
[16:59:43] arrrghhh: but the FE isn't 'seeing' the backend. Hence why I wanted logs
[17:00:12] tgm4883: ok
[17:00:45] tgm4883: arrrghhh: can you do 'sudo su – mythtv'
[17:02:33] arrrghhh: I have a $
[17:02:37] arrrghhh: odd prompt
[17:02:47] tgm4883: arrrghhh: good
[17:02:50] tgm4883: now type 'bash'
[17:03:06] tgm4883: then pastebin 'ps aux | grep myth'
[17:03:06] arrrghhh: ah there's the normal prompt
[17:03:24] arrrghhh: mythbackend is not running
[17:03:31] tgm4883: ok
[17:03:33] arrrghhh: http://hastebin.com/masotehutu.hs
[17:03:47] tgm4883: so lets do just 'mythbackend'
[17:03:58] arrrghhh: hm seems to run
[17:04:04] tgm4883: that should start it from the command line, and y ou're logged in as the mythtv user
[17:04:21] tgm4883: still running?
[17:04:29] arrrghhh: yea
[17:04:32] tgm4883: mythweb is accessible?
[17:04:37] arrrghhh: let me try
[17:05:00] arrrghhh: yep
[17:06:20] arrrghhh: hm. so I should change the init.d file back to the mythtv user?
[17:06:30] tgm4883: arrrghhh: ok, so stop the process, then switch your init script back to mythtv usre and then start the service
[17:06:43] tgm4883: you'll have to exit twice to get back to your prompt
[17:06:50] arrrghhh: 10–4
[17:07:31] arrrghhh: running. let me look for logs
[17:08:04] arrrghhh: no new log files
[17:08:14] arrrghhh: http://hastebin.com/exegodaboz.vbs
[17:08:29] tgm4883: arrrghhh: ok, can you look at /var/log/syslog and see if mythbackend logs are showing up there
[17:08:49] arrrghhh: ok
[17:09:04] arrrghhh: syslog is literally empty

[17:09:55] tgm4883: arrrghhh: did you try to forward syslog logs somewhere else
[17:09:56] arrrghhh: my system works fine... I don't know why syslog is empty
[17:10:09] arrrghhh: I don't think so
[17:10:14] tgm4883: arrrghhh: to be fair, if your system worked fine you wouldn't be here ;)
[17:10:22] arrrghhh: fair enough.
[17:10:30] arrrghhh: file hasn't been touched in more than a year
[17:11:38] arrrghhh: I guess what I mean is the rest of the system works fine. No other issues that I can see/notice
[17:12:00] tgm4883: I'm not at a ubuntu box atm, can you try 'sudo service rsyslog status'
[17:12:16] arrrghhh: rsyslog start/running, process 661
[17:14:01] tgm4883: odd
[17:15:00] arrrghhh: I kinda don't want mythbackend to log to syslog tho, I would much prefer it create its own log in /var/log/mythtv as .28 did
[17:17:04] tgm4883: arrrghhh: well yea, that's how it should work
[17:17:13] tgm4883: arrrghhh: but you aren't logging anything to syslog
[17:17:22] arrrghhh: yea that is a separate issue IMHO
[17:17:27] arrrghhh: not sure why that is happening
[17:18:13] tgm4883: no, actually it's not. essentially what should happen is that mythbackend should log to rsyslog. rsyslog sees that this is coming from mythbackend and instead of writing to /var/log/syslog writes to /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log instead
[17:18:32] arrrghhh: hm. why am I getting mythcommflag logs then?
[17:18:37] arrrghhh: wouldn't that use the same mechanism?
[17:19:38] tgm4883: arrrghhh: possibly. I'm not sure how mythcommflag works. It could potentially just 'echo line > mythcommflag'
[17:19:46] arrrghhh: hm
[17:21:03] tgm4883: arrrghhh: but I'm almost certain that your lack of syslog logs is causing your mythtv logging issue
[17:21:37] tgm4883: arrrghhh: when is the last time this box was rebooted? Maybe a good old fashion reboot will fix it
[17:22:49] arrrghhh: I suppose I can try that
[17:22:53] arrrghhh: it's been up for 60 days
[17:23:33] arrrghhh: jeez my auth.log hasn't been touched since August 2014 as well

[17:29:54] kjj: anyone ever have problems with the screen setup app? On some of my boxes, when I try to run it, it isn't visible and doesn't respond to any input
[17:30:35] arrrghhh: tgm4883, well one mystery down. I still don't have kern.log, auth.log, syslog... but that seems to be an ubuntu issue
[17:31:22] tgm4883: kjj: Are they all using the same theme?
[17:34:51] kjj: no, different themes
[17:35:55] tgm4883: kjj: I recall there was an update to the screen setup wizard a while back that required themers to change something
[17:36:15] tgm4883: kjj: might be worth a test that if switching to a theme that you know works resolves the issue
[17:37:15] arrrghhh: next question when you have a minute tgm4883 – my kodi / rpi2 FE isn't 'seeing' the backend... on .28 this "just worked" or I would see errors in the backend log. I don't see any errors about protocol mismatch etc but the FE does not 'see' myth
[17:37:50] kjj: I'll check the themes on some of my boxes tonight.
[17:37:58] tgm4883: arrrghhh: Have you manually added the backend in kodi?
[17:38:09] kjj: Actually, I wonder if the problem might be my window manager
[17:38:20] arrrghhh: tgm4883, I just had that thought, I had my roomie uninstall/reinstall the client... going to have him check the config
[17:39:04] Goobersmooch (Goobersmooch!~Goobersmo@72.48.201.32) has joined #mythtv-users
[17:39:33] tgm4883: arrrghhh: if that doesn't work, I would check backend logs and logs on kodi. Since you don't have logs on your backend (and really, I would fix that first) then starting mythbackend from the command line as the mythtv user should be a workaround to give you log output in the terminal
[17:39:54] arrrghhh: oh sorry I thought I said the reboot fixed the backend logs
[17:40:14] arrrghhh: I'm still not getting auth.log, syslog, kern.log etc... but the backend logs are working now :)
[17:41:27] tgm4883: arrrghhh: ah ok
[17:41:32] kjj: anyone know how the oldrecorded table works if I want to suppress recording of a specific episode of a show by simulating an old recording?
[17:43:00] arrrghhh: tgm4883, so roomie is telling me the kodi client settings still have the backend IP etc... all the configuration settings are still there
[17:43:39] arrrghhh: I don't see anything in the backend logs like protocol mismatch etc... going to look at logs on kodi
[17:46:00] arrrghhh: uhm... there's my problem. what to do about it, I'm not quite sure

[17:49:10] arrrghhh: tgm4883, so I had my roomie reboot the rpi2, had him uninstall/reinstall the mythtv pvr client... anything else?
[17:49:14] arrrghhh: poop.
[17:50:37] kjj: I tried for quite a while getting cmyth working on my openelec raspi boxes with no luck.
[17:50:40] arrrghhh: well I put a question out to #kodi. This is just odd, I thought the client would work for .27 and .28
[17:51:03] arrrghhh: kjj, it worked great with rpi2 and openelec on .28... I downgrade to .27 and nothing but issues so far!
[17:52:04] kjj: actually, on that theme, how can I improve the performance of myth while browsing through my videos collection?
