[01:04:41] monkeyjoe: could everyone give me an approch to move from a combined backend/frontend to a new frontend and a seperate backend?
[01:05:50] monkeyjoe: should I start the new backend as a secondary backend, then eventually switch it to primary. On the existing one add the other server as an additional storage directory
[01:06:34] monkeyjoe: and slowly the recordings will end on the other machine and then last step switch the frontends?
[01:12:48] Roklobsta: um, start with keeping the FE/BE as is, set up a new machine as an FE
[01:12:57] Roklobsta: and try connect to the BE
[01:13:18] Roklobsta: yo umight need to fiddle some settings to make the BE listen for anything other than localhost FE's
[01:13:52] Roklobsta: once you have new FE working, you are sorted.
[01:13:59] Roklobsta: end of job
[01:18:48] monkeyjoe: Roklobsta: I have that working. I want to replace the current FE/BE
[01:18:55] Roklobsta: oh.
[01:19:20] Roklobsta: ok, well, build a new vanilla BE, it can have FE on it, doesn't matter.
[01:19:25] monkeyjoe: it is a FE/BE that has been running for about 8 years, so it is very old and fragile
[01:19:27] Roklobsta: back up your sql data base on the old machine
[01:19:33] Roklobsta: buidl new machine.
[01:19:38] Roklobsta: copy videos over.
[01:19:54] Roklobsta: install sql data to new machine
[01:19:57] Roklobsta: edit paths etc.
[01:20:02] monkeyjoe: ok so big bang approch
[01:20:02] Roklobsta: finished
[01:20:10] Roklobsta: i did it the other week for the same reason
[01:20:24] Roklobsta: 12.04 -> 14.04 with 3 drive RAID 5.
[01:20:25] monkeyjoe: my wife is going to kill me if i screw up one day of recordings....
[01:20:35] Roklobsta: old machine had dying drives and no RAID but 3 drives
[01:20:39] tgm4883: in there it should probably say that keeping the backend hostname the same across installs makes things easier
[01:20:54] Roklobsta: oh yeah, be preapred to go rent a one bedroom studio if it fails
[01:21:10] Roklobsta: yes, keep the name the same
[01:21:44] Roklobsta: but mythbe doesn't shit itself once you copy your new sql data in. just edit various settings in BE and FE to reflect your new environment.
[01:22:12] Roklobsta: i had recordings on 2 drives and copied them to the same dir on the raid5, myth found them without any problem.
[01:22:27] monkeyjoe: ok, will find the wiki page that goes through this step by step and start planning it.... I was hoping there may be a less impactful gradual way of doing this
[01:22:45] ctmjr: monkeyjoe, this might help you if you have not read it yet http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Backend_migration
[01:23:18] tgm4883: monkeyjoe: is it completely new hardware you are setting up?
[01:23:22] Roklobsta: read this http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Database_Backup_and_Restore
[01:23:36] Roklobsta: do this: mythconverg_backup.pl
[01:23:37] Roklobsta: copy data
[01:23:42] Roklobsta: then on new machine do this:
[01:23:44] monkeyjoe: yes, new server with some large raided drives and a new frontend low power
[01:24:02] Roklobsta: mythconverg_restore.pl --drop_database --create_database --filename yoursql.gz
[01:24:17] Roklobsta: raid5 with jfs works well.
[01:24:21] Roklobsta: i am using mythbuntu
[01:24:54] Roklobsta: and being ubuntu a cronjob once a month scrubs the raid data
[01:25:20] tgm4883: monkeyjoe: you should be able to do it with minimal downtime and some planning
[01:25:32] monkeyjoe: thanks for all the tips... Wish me luck... I only get about 12 hours to get it right
[01:25:33] Roklobsta: if you use WD drive be sure to turn the wdidle3 timer off
[01:25:59] tgm4883: monkeyjoe: geez plenty of time. You could probably get it down with under an hour of real work
[01:26:19] Roklobsta: backup /etc and /home/yourmythtvuser too or you will be sorry
[01:26:25] monkeyjoe: haha, it took me about 2 years to get this one working ;)
[01:26:39] Roklobsta: the long time for me was the sheer slowness of copying 3.5TB of data over
[01:26:59] Roklobsta: monkeyjoe: it's been 6 years for me and i still fight Mythtv.
[01:27:47] monkeyjoe: im just having some weird things happening with some recordings off the hdhomeruns
[01:27:55] tgm4883: 7 years and mine is working great :)
[01:29:15] Roklobsta: i have terribvle trouble with DVB cards
[01:29:20] Roklobsta: they keep missing
[01:29:22] Roklobsta: recording
[01:29:34] Roklobsta: tuner timeouts yaddh yaddah yaddah
[01:29:57] monkeyjoe: i have a draw full of tv tuner cards that "sort-of" work, now I just run hdhomeruns
[01:30:13] Roklobsta: keep /etc and /home/mythuser as there will be lirc configs and so you will need to move across
[01:30:48] Roklobsta: alas tv cards in linu are supported by one mechanical engineering student in finland.
[01:31:17] Roklobsta: who only really tests DVB as he doesn't have ASTC signals

[02:27:12] kusznir: Hi all: In mythvideo with my H.264-based mkv recordings, when I skip forward or back, very random things happen. For example, pressing the back arrow may skip 15 minutes forward, 3 seconds back, 10 minutes back, 30sec forward, or anything else.
[02:27:15] kusznir: Is there a solution to this?
[02:29:38] Roklobsta: maybe the is an index problem
[02:29:42] Roklobsta: in the mkv
[02:29:49] ** Roklobsta clutches at air. **
[02:30:07] Roklobsta: do you recompress recordings to h.264?
[02:39:15] tgm4883: sounds like a VBR issue

[03:18:02] sphery: kusznir: actually, if you're using an old version of mythtv (like one where mythvideo was actually mythvideo, the plugin, versus current MythTV which has a core component called Video Library that's what used to be MythVideo)
[03:18:32] sphery: and you /did/ create a seektable for it with mythtranscode --buildindex or mythcommflag --rebuild, that will cause problems like you see
[03:18:56] sphery: since we don't support seektables for the mkv bitstream format (we end up writing garbage info into the database)
[03:19:17] sphery: current MythTV's video library will prevent you from creating a seektable for mkv videos

[15:02:06] kusznir: sphery: I'm running a current version of mythtv, so I'm pretty sure its integrated. Latest version of LinHES. The video in question I was watching last night was actually from a DVD that I used handbrake on another system to encode; myth's first interaction with it was from mythvideo.
[15:02:37] stuartm: manithree: which version exactly?
[15:02:39] kusznir: Also, sometimes Myth would say "Searching..." for a bit when I hit a skip button, and once just plain exited the video.

[15:05:35] stuartm: manithree: there's been a lot of work on making MythTV more upnp and DLNA compliant. However there are some clients which claim UPnP/DLNA compliance but which aren't actually compliant, even those from mainstream members of the DLNA consortium (e.g. Samsung)

[15:14:59] stuartm: also try googling the exact error you get from the PS3, there are a lot of results for "DLNA Protocol Error" and it seems many of them relate to things like firewall or router configuration problems, if were know the exact error code we may find something that will help us to determine what the problem is
[15:15:16] tgm4883: manithree: how did you accidently upgrade to 0.28?
[15:15:45] manithree: It's 4405. I found lots of people using plex and other servers with huge directories timing out, but nothing mythtv-related.

[19:58:06] Roklobsta: if i have a card with 2 tuners, how can i ensure one tuner gets delayed for tuning setup if both tuners are scheduled for tuning at the same point in time?
[19:58:45] Roklobsta: i ask as i have the pesky afatech cards and there has always been a problem with them tuning at the same time. the chips share an i2c bus and things get badly confused.
[19:59:35] henkpoley: Roklobsta: probably best if the kernel module figures that out
[19:59:50] Roklobsta: agh it'll never happen

[20:00:17] Roklobsta: no

[20:01:38] Roklobsta: they do have firmware which i am sure is buggy too
[20:02:06] Roklobsta: so i am trying to find a dual tuner card that isn't shit
[20:02:06] henkpoley: Putting a lock around writing to the card ought to be possible
[20:02:52] Roklobsta: well, it's the interface. there is one usb endpoint so you need to send the right commands to toggle a gate in the asic to get the i2c commands to go to the right tuner.
[20:03:06] henkpoley: DuoFlex ?
[20:03:09] Roklobsta: becuase the tuners have the same i2c address. hence a switch.

[20:04:08] henkpoley: The driver is outside of the mainline kernel though.
[20:04:08] Roklobsta: things are ok if V4L commands are sent to one tuner. 2 tuners at the same time and it's reboot time.
[20:04:14] henkpoley: Oh, and I haven't used it
[20:04:26] Roklobsta: hahaha nice recommendation!
[20:04:35] henkpoley: I do want to use it
[20:04:53] henkpoley: Just no need, no budget for useless trials
[20:05:18] Roklobsta: i would love this... http://digitalnow.com.au/product_pages/Quad.html
[20:05:19] henkpoley: currently use CT3650 which is sort of all-in-one with CI CAM support and all
[20:06:09] dekarl: henkpoley: http://www.avenard.org/files/mythtv/mac/ latest 0.27 is supposed to run on 10.6+ according to our wiki at http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/MythTV_on_Mac_OS_X . . . lt_Downloads
[20:08:30] Roklobsta: grrr, WTF why does VNC server in mythbuntu never ever work properly?
[20:08:31] dekarl: Roklobsta: actually the driver should take care of delaying the tuning if it can't be done concurrently...
[20:09:39] Roklobsta: dekarl: yeah, well, where to you draw the line at atomicity for tuning? i think it might be a combination of low level driver and something higher up in the V4L chain too.
[20:10:02] Roklobsta: so i thought the other day, can myth be made to introduce a delay?
[20:10:36] Roklobsta: like tuner 1 has no delay but anything for tuner 2 has a lead in delay of 10 seconds
[20:11:05] dekarl: Roklobsta: IIRC there was a patch that delays tuning / starting the recording, but my google foo is weak on that one :/
[20:11:37] Roklobsta: i'd look in the MBE settings but ^&#*%@56 VNC has @^*&(#*^%@ itself as usual.
[20:12:18] Roklobsta: i also have a sneaky feeling MBE DVB setup code doesn't work as well as other programs. i get timeouts when i shouldn't.
[20:12:35] Roklobsta: i need to prove that one though
