[07:47:06] sunkan: I got Danish language in mythtv although I have ever only chosen either US or Swedish language. I found this old ticket https://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/10796 and it looks the same on my setup. I did delete all language settings from the DB as suggested. Then the server and frontend(s) go back to US, but when I choose Swedish on the frontend it sets Language to 'sv' for host 'NULL'. Shouldn't it set it for host 'myfrontend'?

[09:17:12] Macer: dekarl: can i just run the front end without the backend on a client?
[09:17:19] Macer: bedcause i am trying to start it and it keeps looping the setup
[09:18:59] sunkan: stuartm: Can I (or should I) delete/reset the settings that correspond to my mythbackend host? Maybe more stuff like Country is now also supposed to be the same for all hosts rather than individual?
[09:19:14] dekarl: Macer: you can run the frontend on one client and the backend on another system. But you cannot run a frontend without any backend.
[09:20:12] Macer: yeah. i'm trying to connect the frontend on a laptop to the backend running on a media server
[09:20:33] Macer: and for whatever reason when starting mythtv-frontend fresh i am getting the country/language screen
[09:20:36] Macer: then a config screen
[09:20:43] Macer: then it loops back to the country/language screen
[09:21:28] Macer: 2014-08–31 04:21:21.947492 E MythSocket(7fddf4023c00:-1): Failed to connect to (127.0.0.1:6543) Connection refused

[09:21:45] Macer: and not the backend when it first starts
[09:23:14] sunkan: stuartm: Well the same git commit as I mentioned actually says that Country is now global as well ;) So that means I should delete the individual settings for that.
[09:24:36] stuartm: Macer: the config screen asks for the backend IP?
[09:25:18] Macer: yes
[09:25:21] Macer: no
[09:25:25] Macer: asks for the database ip
[09:26:30] Macer: yes. only database server settings
[09:27:35] Macer: wait a second. do i need both the backend and frontend on the local machine and have to configure a second backend for the master one or something?
[09:27:56] Macer: because i don't see how you are supposed to make this mythtvfrontend talk to a backend that isn't on the same system
[09:30:04] stuartm: Macer: no the backend and frontend can be on different systems, when you configure the database setting it's supposed to check the database for the backend IP address
[09:30:26] stuartm: Macer: what IP did you configure the backend to listen on when you ran mythtv-setup?
[09:30:48] stuartm: if you configured 127.0.0.1 then that would explain it
[09:34:44] Macer: no
[09:34:50] Macer: i have it listening on a 192... address
[09:34:58] Macer: i can see the xbmc boxes trying to hit it
[09:35:08] Macer: i just keep getting that awkward protocol 8 error
[09:35:12] stuartm: odd
[09:35:17] Macer: the frontend is trying to connect to localhost
[09:35:26] Macer: and i don't see an option where it allows me to change it to the remote ip
[09:35:59] stuartm: Macer: ok, last resort you can always edit ~/.mythtv/config.xml manually with the correct IP
[09:36:35] stuartm: wait, sorry, no you can't, that's also the database IP
[09:37:01] stuartm: (I've no idea why we don't just connect direct)
[09:37:16] Macer: ah i think i got it
[09:39:22] Macer: of all the stupid things

[09:55:48] dekarl: xbmc needs to learn autodiscovery of the backend. your addon is to old, its not supporting the latest and greatest likely.
[09:56:22] dekarl: and autodiscovery could learn something about the protocol version so xbmc doesn't have to taste it anymore (dread 8 is not 77 message)
[09:57:08] dekarl: are you trying with the old pvr.mythtv.libcmyth or the new pvr.mythtv (which uses the services API)?
[09:57:19] dekarl: this is the new one http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=198833

[10:00:38] dekarl: stuartm, well then "xbmc should use autodiscovery +1" ;)
[10:01:31] stuartm: http://{backendip}:6544/getDeviceDesc
[10:02:37] dekarl: hmm, database connection details are not in there. I'm not sure if they are needed in addition to the services api for the transition
[10:06:44] dekarl: looks like natvie mythtv protocol and services api are all it needs... so the autodiscovery should be enough https://github.com/janbar/xbmc-pvr-addons/blo . . . settings.xml
[10:07:28] stuartm: dekarl: the frontend uses the information there (it has IP from initial discovery reply) to call the services GetConnectionInfo
[10:07:31] dekarl: but then I'm not sure if XBMC supports advanced concepts like settings autodicovery
[10:08:13] Macer: mythtv-0.27.0.20140121_4
[10:08:16] Macer: that is the version i am running
[10:08:40] Macer: i was using libcmyth
[10:08:46] Macer: becuse that was all taht was available
[10:08:48] stuartm: but auto-disovery fails if any of the machines have firewalls which for some reason are generally configured to block multicast by default
[10:09:38] dekarl: macer, you want to update, there's been lots of fixes for LiveTV since then (e.g. to latest fixes/0.27 )
[10:10:14] dekarl: PVR support in XBMC is still very new, so you'll likely have to collect bits and pieces from all over the place
[10:10:25] stuartm: fine if you feel completely safe behind in your NAT'd local network behind the router, but problematic for IPv6 (upnp still hasn't figured that out)
[10:11:44] dekarl: stuartm, if the local hosts firewall filters multicast then the packager messed up... After all UPNP with its multicast is meant to automatically poke holes into these firewall so the users applications can communicate...
[10:11:53] Macer: dekarl: i don't think that is an option
[10:12:04] Macer: i had a hard enough time getting it functional in a freenas fbsd jail as it is ;)
[10:12:28] Macer: i'm honestly not sure how well it would take to being build from elsewhere
[10:12:31] dekarl: macer, is that with ports or manually compiled?
[10:12:37] Macer: neither
[10:12:39] Macer: from the pkg repo
[10:12:44] Macer: building from ports is a nightmare
[10:12:54] stuartm: dekarl: well Macer never saw auto-discovery in action, so that's at least one platform (in addition to mine) that filters multicast
[10:13:44] dekarl: stuartm, there is no FreeNAS MythTV backend package to set up the firewall correctly...
[10:14:07] Macer: dekarl: that's all i need?
[10:14:25] Macer: 05:06 <+dekarl> looks like natvie mythtv protocol and services api are all it needs... so the autodiscovery should be enough https://github.com/janbar/xbmc-pvr-addons/blo . . . settings.xml
[10:15:49] dekarl: macer, no that is all that janbar needs to implement in his addon. The Addon then depends only on a working multicast setup.
[10:16:16] Macer: he needs 1 .xml? :)
[10:16:22] Macer: well when will he release it as a .zip i can install heh
[10:16:34] dekarl: whats you client OS?
[10:16:46] Macer: i'm using a few different ones
[10:16:57] dekarl: hint, the answer is easier if its *untu
[10:16:58] Macer: ubuntu, openelec, windows
[10:17:17] dekarl: for *untu just add launchpad.net/~jlbarriere68/+archive/ubuntu/ppa
[10:17:43] dekarl: "sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jlbarriere68/ppa"
[10:18:32] dekarl: "release as .zip" sounds like its not going to work for addons with native code instead of just some configuration files/scripts
[10:19:02] Macer: yeah but what is that repo for?

[21:55:06] Macer: the default dir is where it will store recordings? ie: things that i simply record outright?

[21:55:24] Macer: i see live tv puts it in a dir when it's actually live
[21:55:35] dekarl: Macer: yes
[21:55:48] Macer: ah ok. awesome.
[21:55:58] Macer: i was also a bit curious. where do i set the overrecording?
[21:56:00] dekarl: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Storage_Groups there is at least a default group with one directory
[21:56:10] Macer: yeah i did that :)
[21:56:17] Macer: i just wasn't sure exactly what the default dir did
[21:56:25] dekarl: live tv and recordings both go there unless you add a dedicated group for it
[21:56:27] Macer: so if the other groups aren't defined it just shoves it all in there?
[21:56:28] Macer: ah ok
[21:56:37] Macer: awesome
[21:56:56] Macer: i'm looking for a way to make it record 5 minutes before and 10 minutes afterwards when setting a recording
[21:57:05] dekarl: you can also create your personal "its for the kids" group and use that in a "for the kids" recording rule template that you use for all kids stuff
[21:57:25] Macer: oh. nice. well. i do have a child but no need for that tbh
[21:57:33] Macer: i'm just setting it all up to record sports ota heh

[21:58:04] Macer: i must have missed it
[21:59:18] Macer: hm. under what section can i find the recording rules?

[21:59:37] Macer: recording profiles?
[21:59:53] dekarl: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/User_Manual:Detail . . . 8Advanced.29

[22:03:03] Macer: or is that not possible?
[22:03:09] Macer: oh.. blah :)
[22:03:26] dekarl: you can use the frontend or mythweb, or the brand new (better use master) web frontend
[22:03:48] Macer: i see
[22:03:52] Macer: i haven't set up any web ui yet
[22:04:11] dekarl: and of course you can use the other frontend with that plugin, but I have no idea if and how good the recording rule editor is
[22:04:33] Macer: hm. is there an iphone app that can access it?
[22:04:37] Macer: :)
