[22:44:16] rhollan: I'm planning to rearange my network and have the cable terminate into residential internet, business internet, tuner in my office, and then route over the powerline backbone
[22:44:49] rhollan: I suppose I could do a FE/BE split, but am not prepared to do that yet.
[22:49:53] croppa_ (croppa_!~stuart@14.14.233.220.static.exetel.com.au) has joined #mythtv-users
[23:01:01] rhollan: basically, since I added residential internet to support ComCast OnDemand on the XBOX360, I've been toying with the idea of consilidating the residential and business modems to allow session load-balancing across the two services.
[23:07:42] disputin1 (disputin1!~sean@ip-64-134-130-13.public.wayport.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[23:21:42] rhollan: make sense, or should I just move toward a FE/BE system (and buy yet ANOTHER computer).
[23:23:38] SmallwoodDR82 (SmallwoodDR82!~Smallwood@unaffiliated/smallwooddr82) has joined #mythtv-users
[23:28:15] wagnerrp: seems you could just put both modems on the same network, and use routing tables to decide what goes where
[23:30:58] rhollan: Can't: they both want to do DHCP.
[23:31:09] rhollan: But the issue is the network that the tuner is on.
[23:32:07] rhollan: If I move it close enough to enough to the FE/BE I have to move the whole cable setup there, or run an unsignly cable to the TV which I am trying to avoid.
[23:32:48] rhollan: that's what I have now, together with the residential internet routed through a router local to the TV (and catching the wireless as well)
[23:33:13] rhollan: I could out the biz tuner there too, but then I'd have an unsecured link to the office.
[23:33:16] wagnerrp: so put them each on their own network, and use your router to decide what goes to each modem
[23:33:25] rhollan: doing that.
[23:33:48] rhollan: But that means I have to co-locate the tuner 'cause I don't want an ugly cable going to the TV where the mythtv FE/BE is.
[23:34:08] rhollan: might be easier to just spring for an intel NUC BE for $200
[23:34:34] wagnerrp: run it through the wall, and install a jack
[23:34:48] wagnerrp: use the same path you used for ethernet
[23:35:16] rhollan: I have structured wiring... sadly there is no drop close to the TV: it's by the damn fireplace.
[23:35:48] rhollan: ... and to which I am now running coax.
[23:36:13] rhollan: Wait. I know how I can do it.
[23:37:26] rhollan: In the office, the DMZ, on which the tuner is, is extended to the living room by a powerline LAN. Right now that goes through a router to PS3, XBOX1, XBOS360, and myth box. I could get a cheap switch and put it ahead of the router and tap the tuner off there.
[23:37:58] rhollan: But, it seems just as easy to specify the IP rather than rely on lan segment discovery
[23:38:03] wagnerrp: segmented networks just sounds painful
[23:38:31] rhollan: I have three: living room, powerline backbone, and office

[23:39:33] wagnerrp: i've got a couple logical networks, but only the one physical network
[23:39:37] rhollan: The router in the living room also lets me block traffic to admin the mythtv box unless I go through the VPN 'cause I don't trust the poweline lan for security
[23:40:43] rhollan: I'm still thinking of decopling the biz and residental WAN connections, and terminating the residential one in the living room, just to keep the game traffic off the backbone lan
[23:41:01] rhollan: but then I lose the ability to load-balance WAN sessions
[23:41:31] wagnerrp: video games should consume an absolutely trivial amount of your LAN bandwidth
[23:41:41] wagnerrp: on the order of a few kilobits maximum
[23:41:41] disputin (disputin!~sean@ip-64-134-130-13.public.wayport.net) has quit (Client Quit)
[23:41:47] rhollan: I guess.
[23:43:09] rhollan: The disadvantage of the current setup is that if I add another FE, traffic traverses the powerline backbone lan twice.
[23:43:30] rhollan: Which is an argument for a FE/BE and to hell if the connection is routed.
[23:43:42] wagnerrp: or ditching powerline
[23:43:55] rhollan: I'm not crazy about saturating the wireless either
[23:44:15] rhollan: I can get several hundred MB/s over powerline
[23:44:28] rhollan: Mb/s
[23:44:44] wagnerrp: it's still a broadcast network
[23:45:23] wagnerrp: broadcast domains with multiple users and without scheduled communication is a recipe for trouble
[23:45:40] rhollan: Yeah. The current topology is each location (currently office and living room) has it's own local net, routed to the powerline,
[23:45:59] rhollan: There is wlan access at one point over 2.4 and 5 GHz
[23:46:36] rhollan: The thing is, inbound WAN traffic can't saturate the powerline backbone, and location to location traffic is rare
[23:46:53] rhollan: except for either tuner to FE/BE or BE to FE
[23:47:47] rhollan: This way I can consider the powerline backbone insecure, and stick a VPN endpoint on the router in each location when I want to admin devices behind it
[23:48:56] rhollan: What do you think of this: http://www.frys.com/product/7974640?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
[23:49:09] wagnerrp: a VPN bridge should still route broadcast data
[23:49:32] rhollan: yes, but tunnelled to each local LAN
[23:49:46] rhollan: it's mostlly intended for admin access.
[23:50:00] rhollan: the powerline backbone is treated as insecure
[23:50:53] rhollan: unless you go with something like an intel Atom C2550 with AESNI, most routers can't do more than a few Mb/s over VPN anyway
