[11:38:23] dreamcat4: hi. i'm having problems getting mythweb working on nginx + php-fpm
[11:39:19] dreamcat4: https://gist.github.com/dreamcat4/31edb92e0b6f08c62cef
[11:40:07] dreamcat4: and nothing at all appears in php-fpm.log
[11:40:48] dreamcat4: i think the nginx is OK because it's log looks correct
[11:41:14] dreamcat4: php. grrr.
[11:53:10] dreamcat4: mythweb isn't giving any php errors for me to debug. this is laughable
[11:53:19] justinh: not surptised. mythweb is designed primarily for apache installs, I thought
[11:53:33] justinh: surptised? heh
[11:54:03] dreamcat4: looking in my pastie link (above), we can see some variables aren't being set correctly
[11:54:20] dreamcat4: like skin_url, and some javascript variables.
[11:54:43] justinh: oo looks like somebody has succeeded.. http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/MythWeb_on_Nginx
[11:54:54] dreamcat4: i've googled extensively this error. but no solution has explained about it.
[11:55:35] dreamcat4: and my nginx.conf is like the other guy's
[11:56:09] justinh: try the user's ML then, would be my suggestion
[11:56:15] hpeter (hpeter!hpeter@conference/europycon/x-lwlbroxapuaqxwuu) has joined #mythtv-users
[11:58:29] ** justinh never understands why people want to do all these crazy things. There's nothing wrong with Apaceh IMHO **
[11:59:16] justinh: the whole thing about resources is kinda moot if you're running mythtv on the box
[12:33:46] dreamcat4: resource-limited people appreciate nginx + php-fpm
[12:34:26] dreamcat4: and anyway, the problem doesn't seem to be those things,
[12:34:57] sphery: Yeah, it's all about the right tool for the job. nginx is the right tool for the job when you're building a skyscraper using 2x4's and a backsaw.
[12:35:33] sphery: (agreeing with justinh--that if you're resource-limited enough that the difference between nginx and apache is important, you've got the wrong system for running mythtv)
[12:36:19] sphery: forest for trees and all
[12:36:44] justinh: compared to mythbackend, apache is no resource hog
[12:36:52] sphery: definitely
[12:36:53] justinh: and especially not when compared to mysql
[12:37:07] sphery: most definitely
[12:37:18] dreamcat4: allright, you've convinced me to try apache then
[12:37:45] justinh: anyway like I said, if you've got your config from the wiki verbatim – seeing as nobody here knows, as the users-ML
[12:37:54] justinh: *ask
[12:38:29] justinh: and if you think apache is demanding, try anything from Atlassian. Oy!
[12:38:57] justinh: we've got JIRA, Confluence & Crucible here. They're abominations
[12:39:07] sphery: yeah, it's possible to get it to work with nginx, but most packages are just configuring it with apache, so there's much more experience/testing that way
[12:39:09] dreamcat4: in my opinion the problem is mythweb being badly coded, because it is not erroring-out and telling the problem
[12:39:39] dreamcat4: sphery: yeah i take that onboard and will try with apache now
[12:39:43] justinh: "hey I know, we need to make a web app thingy, so let's use a webserver written in java"
[12:40:12] sphery: dreamcat4: but if your php stuff isn't working right, then mythweb's coding isn't going to help one way or the other
[12:40:50] dreamcat4: sphery: well that is the mystery. because as far as i can see from the log files, it is working and so is nginx too
[12:41:20] sphery: generally if you're getting nothing, php isn't working
[12:42:00] dreamcat4: sphery: yeah i though that too at first. then i edited mythweb.php to intentionally insert some bad php statements
[12:42:10] sphery: if you get a colored page with a useless error message saying that the error message can't be translated, you have early-level mythweb configuration issues
[12:42:25] dreamcat4: and those (manually inserted bad php) all come up 100% fine in the logs (and on html output)
[12:42:31] sphery: and if you get a mythweb page with a useful error message, you have mythweb configuration issues
[12:42:56] dreamcat4: sphery: is this any of those thing? --> https://gist.github.com/dreamcat4/31edb92e0b6f08c62cef
[12:43:40] sphery: if that's what's coming back from mythweb, it looks like you haven't set up rewriting properly or something
[12:44:08] dreamcat4: sphery: no it doesn't
[12:44:31] dreamcat4: those skin_url are set in php code, in includes/skin.php
[12:45:59] sphery: that said, testing on an apple device only makes thing harder (hardest)
[12:46:42] sphery: use a real desktop browser first, and get it working, then start playing with mobile
[12:48:11] justinh: I could never get away with mythweb's mobile skins. I always set my phone browser's user agent to 'desktop' for that site
[12:48:15] dreamcat4: it's not IOS device. it is the full Safari browser on Mac OS X 10.7
[12:48:56] sphery: well, reset your skin so it's using the default one
[12:49:02] sphery: see the readme
[12:49:17] dreamcat4: thanks sphery
[12:49:26] dreamcat4: i'll go and check on that

[12:52:52] justinh: http://<hostname>/mythtv/?RESET_TMPL=true the wiki says

[21:31:46] dekarl: if that is a dedicated frontend you could just try minimyth, that comes with a selected set of drivers for video acceleration

[21:44:33] justinh: hahaha new email spam from ARM.. which mostly mentions smartwatches. The irony
[21:45:15] RedPenguin: ok thanks dekarl just looking up now how to do either of said options right now, starting with binary since that's the driver I have
[21:48:39] amessina_ is now known as amessina
[21:51:31] dekarl: RedPenguin: on ubuntu that would be "sudo apt-get install xvba-va-driver vainfo"
[21:51:57] RedPenguin: oh ok, we already installed that a while back
[21:52:41] RedPenguin: it's running xvba_drv_video.so
[21:53:19] RedPenguin: It doesn't seem to show any profiles like Google claims vainfo is supposed to show
[21:57:30] dekarl: is there a special reason to use fglrx-legacy instead of fglrx?
[21:58:10] dekarl: I'm looking at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/AMD which hints to use the open source driver instead for legacy cards
[21:58:46] RedPenguin: Did try the open source driver at first but for some reason it didn't seem like HDMI+Audio wanted to do mirroring at correct resoltuin
[21:58:49] RedPenguin: but might have to try it again

[22:00:00] justinh: mirroring? multiple monitors too?
[22:00:14] RedPenguin: TV and Monitor
[22:00:36] justinh: wouldn't that only work with gl/video acceleration on one viewport anyway?
[22:01:29] RedPenguin: seems to work right now, we see the same thing on each monitor
[22:01:39] RedPenguin: except the issue I came in here for anyway
[22:02:01] justinh: oh man, just been googling images of the insides of hitachi teeves. I should've looked at those before I bought one.
[22:03:25] justinh: I've seen the insides of Sony, Panasonic, Samsung.. they were well laid out.. very neat infact. These hitachi pics look like they were made by inept PC modders

[22:07:43] RedPenguin: oh and the other issue with the original open source driver now that I remember was
[22:07:54] RedPenguin: if we ever changed the TV Channel or shut off the TV, the HDMI would not come back on

[22:19:24] justinh: xfsettingsd ? Why do x settings need a daemon? The mind boggles
[22:19:52] justinh: or even xfce settings. Surely not a requirement to daemonise the thing
[22:20:57] RedPenguin: thanks again dekarl we actually googled and everything but never found that link you just posted
[22:21:49] dekarl: mind you, I have no idea what that xfsettingsd is, I'm just parroting back what the internet says to me ;)
[22:22:49] justinh: http://docs.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-settings/xfsettingsd
[22:23:30] justinh: though quite why the DE could have a bearing on that... eew
[22:24:04] RedPenguin: guys great news everything is working so far, the "Esc" issue is gone
[22:24:14] RedPenguin: for some reason we are having issues getting HDMI to turn on right now but other than that
[22:24:16] justinh: unless the driver signals that the display has 'gone'.. heh
[22:24:25] RedPenguin: on the PC monitor it's working perfectly as expected though
[22:24:47] justinh: xrandr may help with that
[22:25:21] justinh: xrandr --output yada yada

[23:51:16] RedPenguin: made some bizzare progress
[23:51:52] RedPenguin: The open-source driver refused to turn on HDMI and went back to fglrx-legacy and on "High Quality" profile the video works great
[23:52:30] RedPenguin: this time around I never installed xvba package so maybe that's what the issue was
