[01:14:48] PatrickDickey: Hi everyone. So I moved my master backend to a Fedora computer. Everything *seems* to be working right on it (as I can view my recorded programs from that computer). However I can't connect with any remote frontends. I get the setup screen where you select your language, and regardless of what I choose there, the frontend crashes and comes back to that same screen. I've verified that my backend is using an IP address other
[01:14:48] PatrickDickey: than localhost, and the config.xml and mysql.txt files on the frontends point there. Any suggestions?
[01:15:25] [R]: firewall?
[01:16:31] wagnerrp: is the database server configured to listen on the network?
[01:16:54] Kwisher: PatrickDickey: did you check the db password?
[01:18:24] PatrickDickey: Yes. I think it's right. I have the same one in all of my configs, as what's on the Fedora backend. However, the one frontend has MySQL on it, and the mythtv user has a different password.
[01:19:14] PatrickDickey: The frontend I'm talking about used to be the master backend (I removed the backend completely). So, would I need to change the password on it also?
[01:20:02] Kwisher: i think they all need to be the same
[01:23:22] PatrickDickey: One other quick question then. When I backed up my database on the old backend, would it have backed up the password there?

[01:31:38] [R]: it would tell you...
[01:42:52] Blue1: WoW. I got some very strange message in the log — the problem turned out to be that the hdhomerun tuner was not plugged in. When you plug it in, you need to restart the backend. I dunno -
[01:43:34] [R]: yeah, if the tuner wasn't there when it started... it doesnt magically keep searching for it

[01:54:13] PatrickDickey: Ok, so the firewall is not running (according to firewall-cmd). So that's not the issue.
[01:58:36] PatrickDickey: What I noticed in mythfrontend.log is that it tries pinging the master backend, and then it binds to the IP addresses on the frontend computer. Then it fails to open a connection.
[01:59:02] wagnerrp: can we see the logs?
[02:00:02] PatrickDickey: Sure. I'll pastebin the frontend one in a few minutes. I'll have to clean it up a bit, since it's got a lot of old information in it.

[05:11:39] PatrickDickey: Now, I just have to get the closed captioning to work (which was my original reason for moving to another computer).

[05:28:41] PatrickDickey: I don't have a subtitles menu, nor does hitting "T" work.
[05:29:06] PatrickDickey: Are you running an analog or digital tuner?
[05:31:25] Blue1: digital — hdhomerun
[05:32:06] Blue1: in mythfrontend you can go to: setup/video/playback osd/ check: always display closed captions or subtitles
[05:32:54] Blue1: what tuner are you using? my issue with captioning, is that I cannot create a dvd from mythtv with captioning information.

[05:35:00] PatrickDickey: I'm running an older analog Hauppauge HVR-1600.
[05:35:12] wagnerrp: (also digital)
[05:35:48] Blue1: I have no exp. with Hauppauge — sorry
[05:35:50] PatrickDickey: I've got everything checked for Closed Captions, and it still doesn't work. You're right. It's both analog and digital, but my cable provider only provides analog or encrypted digital.
[05:36:05] wagnerrp: attach an antenna
[05:36:07] Blue1: are you using comcat?
[05:36:12] Blue1: comcast?
[05:36:25] PatrickDickey: Nope. It's a local provider. They've got the monopoly on cable here.
[05:36:27] Blue1: I had problems with comcast — I went to over-the-air
[05:36:48] wagnerrp: usually everywhere is a monopoly
[05:36:54] Blue1: amen
[05:37:02] Blue1: try using an antenna
[05:37:31] Blue1: are you running wheezy or squeeze?
[05:37:57] PatrickDickey: For a frontend, Ubuntu 13.10 and 12.04 (soon to be 14.04), and backend is Fedora 19.
[05:37:59] Blue1: doh sorry this is the myth channel not #debian
[05:38:13] Blue1: that should work --
[05:38:36] Blue1: what version of mythtv are you using? 26?
[05:38:54] PatrickDickey: Well the only problem with an antenna is, I'm about 30 miles from anything, and in an apartment. I'm running 0.27.
[05:39:10] Blue1: yeah I have the apt. blues --
[05:39:53] PatrickDickey: I've tried antennas through converter boxes, and didn't get much. I haven't really tried through my tuners though.
[05:40:00] Blue1: i am running 26.1 fwiw
[05:40:35] PatrickDickey: Maybe they ripped the subtitles menu (and closed captioning) out in .27? :S
[05:40:37] Blue1: it's worth a try — if you only get 1 channel — you know its your cable provider not the tuner
[05:40:47] Blue1: dunno.
[05:41:00] wagnerrp: subtitles should operate the same as before
[05:41:02] PatrickDickey: Well I do get closed captioning on my tv that's not hooked to mythtv.
[05:41:17] Blue1: yes, captioning is function of the tv set
[05:41:40] Blue1: so if the tv set can't get the captions — then you might need to enable that on the tv
[05:42:05] wagnerrp: mythtv processes line21 captions on its own. it does not pass them onto the tv
[05:42:36] Blue1: oh I didn't know that.
[05:42:55] Blue1: but try it w/o the mythtv and see if the set gets captioning --
[05:43:56] PatrickDickey: wagnerrp: Does that include if it's connected to a monitor--not a tv?
[05:44:26] Blue1: wagnerrp: do you know of a way to create a dvd with the captioning information? nothing I've tried seems to work – it display fine from a recorded source.
[05:44:45] Blue1: oh a monitor — won't display captions --
[05:44:49] wagnerrp: don't know. never cared to do anything with closed captioning
[05:44:57] Blue1: i have my mythtv hooked up to my hdtv
[05:45:11] Blue1: I am hoh and depend on captioning.
[05:46:30] Blue1: I don't know how myth treats captioning – but generally a captioning decoder is needed – that's built into all 13 inch tv sets sold after 1994.
[05:46:42] Blue1: 13 inch and bigger
[05:48:17] wagnerrp: mythtv being able to handle it depends on whether the card exposes the information
[05:48:18] wagnerrp: many dont
[05:52:48] PatrickDickey: Hmmm... The one that I'm mainly trying to get it working on is a 32" HDTV. But I'm using a DVI to HDMI connector. That could explain a lot too.
[05:54:06] wagnerrp: neither DVI nor HDMI carry text data
[05:54:26] wagnerrp: if you're going to see it, mythtv needs to bake it into the image before it gets output by the video card
[05:54:49] Blue1: check to see the captioning is enabled on the set.
[05:57:42] PatrickDickey: Possibly a dumb question then. Does it work with S-Video?
[05:57:57] wagnerrp: s-video can do old line 21 analog
[05:58:02] Blue1: no
[05:58:12] wagnerrp: but i doubt you could successfully output that from a PC video card
[05:58:13] Blue1: no bearing

[06:03:41] PatrickDickey: It's stupid anyhow (my reason for wanting it. LOL) I'm taking an online class, and like to have the news on during the chat. But, I use a mic, so I have to keep the sound muted. Hense wanting closed captions.

[16:37:36] wagnerrp: i don't know what filmon is
[16:38:27] tonsofpcs: trumee: this is what home theatre receivers are for...
[16:38:54] wagnerrp: specifically, higher end ones with multiple zones

[16:40:04] wagnerrp: why not just use mythtv directly?
[16:40:23] wagnerrp: if it's being output from the speakers mythtv uses, and controlled by mythtv... whats the point of the rpi?
[16:40:32] trumee: That way I can connect speakers to rpi. Rpi is always on while htpc is not

[16:41:24] trumee: Whenever I turn htpc/myth on it should use rpi/speakers

[16:42:02] trumee: wagnerrp: correct

[16:43:08] trumee: tonsofpcs: yes
[16:43:23] tonsofpcs: trumee: but you need a USB audio device then, why not just plug the USB device into the HTPC?
[16:43:26] wagnerrp: that's the explicit purpose of an AV receiver... basically a KVM switch for multimedia purposes
[16:43:30] trumee: Because i don't have an AV receiver

[19:23:31] wagnerrp: delays
[19:24:20] wagnerrp: running audio synced to video over pulse is troublesome, doing it on a remote pulse server really shouldn't be attempted
