[18:00:22] skd5aner: I've got 4GB and an 64GB SSD
[18:00:27] rhollan: Just refreshed my tuners.
[18:00:32] skd5aner: but, I have a TON of recordings
[18:01:00] rhollan: I've been looking at getting another 2 GB: top shows down to about 180MB free when recording from all three tuners
[18:01:02] Steve-Goodey (Steve-Goodey!~steve@host86-152-62-67.range86-152.btcentralplus.com) has joined #mythtv-users
[18:01:08] skd5aner: but, it's very responsive on my other frontend (non-zbox)
[18:02:01] ** wagnerrp_ pokes wagnerrp **
[18:02:04] wagnerrp_: it's still there
[18:02:30] rhollan: yeah, I'm having a bit of trouble trying to get a remote frontend working when the main front/backend on th ID41 is viewing TV: the last one freezes. Of course, the tuner, master front/backend, and remote frontend are on the same LAN segment, so that might be it. Or the ID41 is just being taxed too much
[18:03:06] wagnerrp_: rhollan: could you post the Mem: and Swap: lines from top?
[18:03:49] wagnerrp_: are you sure you're actually using all but 180MB, and you're not just seeing memory being consumed by disk cache?
[18:03:50] rhollan: let me get something playing/recording first. As for swap, I disabled it: don't want to swap to flash. But, that is why I really think I should get another 2 GB.
[18:04:01] rhollan: maybe
[18:04:47] rhollan: just changed input connections (wasn't clear that three tuners could share one source, so I first had the same source three times, which I see is not necessary (and mythfilldatabase was taking forever to do it three times)).
[18:04:53] wagnerrp_: each recording should only take around 11MB of static ringbuffer, and another couple MB of write buffer
[18:05:18] wagnerrp_: probably somewhere around 20MB-30MB total when you include all the various storage in other buffers and objects
[18:05:20] rhollan: as soon as mythfilldatabase finishes, I'll try, and get you top mem results
[18:05:39] wagnerrp_: just post what you're seeing now
[18:05:57] wagnerrp_: pasting those two lines in here is fine
[18:06:12] rhollan: O.K. but the frontend isn't even running now.
[18:06:47] rhollan: KiB Mem: 2063008 total, 1372796 used, 690212 free, 64140 buffers
[18:06:59] rhollan: KiB Swap: 0 total, 0 used, 0 free, 845368 cached
[18:07:38] rhollan: I can do that again once I restart mythfrontend
[18:07:43] wagnerrp_: that 845368 cached value, that's the disk cache
[18:07:47] rhollan: waiting for mythfilldatabase
[18:07:50] wagnerrp_: you're really only using around 500MB of memory currently
[18:08:05] rhollan: sure, but frontend is not running.
[18:08:21] wagnerrp_: i realize that
[18:08:26] rhollan: Oh. I see: used-cache
[18:08:49] wagnerrp_: right
[18:09:06] wagnerrp_: disk cache is a good thing, but for most purposes, you can consider it as unused memory
[18:09:35] wagnerrp_: as soon as the memory is needed else where, the cache will be flushed and made available to applications
[18:09:38] wagnerrp_: in theory...
[18:09:57] wagnerrp_: if you get a bit too close to the limit, the OOM killer may get a bit aggressive
[18:10:09] rhollan: sure. Want to see if I can get a remote FE watching TV at the same time. I think it might be a bit much for the little ID41 and the BE might need to be elsewhere.
[18:10:34] wagnerrp_: i had to add a bit of swap to my backend when i upgraded to FBSD10, since the new ARC is a bit slow to give up memory
[18:10:47] wagnerrp_: and i was getting random OOMs whenever someone would kick off the buildbot
[18:10:48] rhollan: RE OOM: yeah, that's why I was watching free go down to 180MB and was getting nurvous.
[18:11:27] rhollan: don't really want to swap to flash. I guess I could swap to a partition on the attached Lacie 3T drive (USB3 or eSata)
[18:11:58] wagnerrp_: is this a proper SSD?
[18:12:02] skd5aner: wagnerrp: I'm getting some coredumps in /tmp... one of them is core.%.decorder, what's that?
[18:12:17] skd5aner: I'm seeing several for mythcommflag too
[18:12:35] wagnerrp_: core.%.decorder? never heard of it
[18:12:42] rhollan: No. It's a 7200 RPM USB3 drive. The OS drive is a 64GB SATA2 SSD
[18:12:43] skd5aner: core.1392646557.1001.3459.Decoder
[18:12:57] skd5aner: was being lazy
[18:13:07] wagnerrp_: still never heard of it
[18:13:10] rhollan: I figured I'd use the spinning disk for media.
[18:13:32] wagnerrp_: right... the "flash" is a proper SSD with wear leveling and all
[18:14:12] rhollan: It's nice: all aluminum case. fanless. $219 at Frys. The SSD is a Kingston. Supports TRIM but not sure uf Ubuntu 13.10 has that on by default
[18:16:42] skd5aner: rhollan: I do not use trim within fstab. I actually run fstrim via cron
[18:17:28] skd5aner: you can run it daily or weekly and that's usually enough, rather than doing it directly within fstab, which will do it after every single delete action
[18:17:54] skd5aner: and, TRIM is only supported on EXT4 and BTRFS I believe
[18:19:03] rhollan: thanks. I think I formatted the SSD ext3, though. lemme check fstab
[18:19:24] rhollan: nope ext4
[18:19:27] rhollan: :-)
[18:21:02] skd5aner: rhollan: http://turriebuntu.wordpress.com/ubuntu-pages . . . te-in-fstab/
[18:23:28] rhollan: thanks
[18:25:36] rhollan: yup
[18:25:57] rhollan: 51013959680 bytes were trimmed
[18:26:02] rhollan: been recording and deleting a lot
[18:26:17] rhollan: for now I was recoding to the ssd for test
[18:26:54] wagnerrp_: if you're ever using an SSD and not using TRIM, you cannot populate the entire disk with filesystems
[18:27:13] wagnerrp_: you need to leave it a good chunk of space unpartitioned to let the drive do its own internal garbage collection
[18:27:34] rhollan: watching 1080p is occupying around 900MB now
[18:27:55] rhollan: good to know
[18:28:01] wagnerrp_: just the frontend?
[18:28:12] rhollan: FE and BE on ID41
[18:29:47] wagnerrp_: i mean the frontend application is listed as taking 900MB in the 'res' column?
[18:32:04] rhollan: no, total system mem used-cached
[18:32:26] rhollan: 435MB res

[18:43:28] wagnerrp_: you individually defined all three?

[18:43:59] wagnerrp_: so you're just using it as a clearqam tuner with no cablecard?
[18:44:06] rhollan: UI on the HDHomerun shows one tuner in use.

[18:44:55] wagnerrp_: multirec is using one tuner to record multiple shows on a single multiplex simultaneously
[18:45:15] wagnerrp_: cablecard tuners do not allow that. it's one recording for one tuner
[18:45:25] rhollan: shouldn't be on the same multiplex.

[20:52:00] skd5aner: that's your best bet and probably the easiest too
[20:52:24] skd5aner: do not use more than 1 tuner for a HDHR-Prime tuner, multirec doesn't work there and you don't need virtual tuners
[20:52:28] skd5aner: that will only confuse things

[20:54:18] rhollan: but when I removed the second one and tried to record and watch something else it failed. so it's just the third tuner not seen. Will try delete/readd all. I guess that's a bit more aggressive with the DB.

[22:39:26] rhollan_afk is now known as rhollan
[22:40:54] rhollan: well that just bites: myth wont see the second or third tuner on th hdhomerun now.
[22:41:58] Kwisher: rhollan: which myth version?
[22:43:46] Tobbe5178 (Tobbe5178!~asdf@h104n2-sv-a13.ias.bredband.telia.com) has quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[22:44:54] rhollan: 0.27 I think
[22:45:57] rhollan: Version: 2:0.27.0+fixes.20130919.5b917e8–0ubuntu1
[22:46:39] rhollan: it wasn't seeing the third tuner, so I removed all, and readded and reconnect them, and now it will see all three but only use the first
[22:46:47] rhollan: I am pulling my hair out over this
[22:46:57] rhollan: I even tried removing and readding the source and refilling the db
[22:47:58] rhollan: for some reason the tuners are numbered 1 3 5.
[22:48:18] rhollan: yes, I set the max recordings for each to 1 as the hdhomerun does not support multirec
[22:49:17] rhollan: If I start a record, then leave live TV and try to reenter it wont let me, popping back out. But, it doesn't tell me all tuners are in use either.
[22:49:25] rhollan: I wonder if the hdhomerun needs to be rebooted.
[22:49:27] Kwisher: can you watch livetv on each tuner?
[22:50:52] rhollan: how can I tell? How can I get mythtv to move to another tuner without tying one up by recording
[22:51:35] Kwisher: menu > source > switch input
[22:51:52] Kwisher: it won't let you tune to the one recording
[22:52:20] rhollan: let me try
[22:52:30] rhollan: the status web page DOES show all tuners
[22:53:43] Kwisher: did you set all the tuner priorities correctly in the b/e setup?
[22:53:46] rhollan: There is no option to switch input from menu >source
[22:53:51] rhollan: all are priority 0

[22:54:17] Kwisher: it's in there somewhere
[22:54:56] rhollan: all are priority 0 and schedule orders are default: 1 3 and 5 for some reason
[22:55:14] Kwisher: make sure you scroll all the way down in the source menu
[22:57:29] rhollan: menu > source just has one option : jump to program
[22:57:39] rhollan: that has one option recorded program
[22:57:47] rhollan: that has deleted and live tv options
[22:58:04] rhollan: Live TV has recorded programs, even if deleted
[22:59:22] streeter (streeter!streeter@nat/redhat/x-zzzqhblzafhzered) has quit (Quit: Leaving)
[22:59:54] rhollan: I'm going to reboot the hdbomerun.
[23:00:08] rhollan: FE and BE stopped, rebooting HDHR
[23:01:57] rhollan: restarting BE
[23:02:19] rhollan: starting FE
[23:02:55] rhollan: didn't help
[23:03:01] rhollan: :-(
[23:06:27] rhollan: could the input priority of 0 be the problem on all inputs? should it be 1 on all of them?
[23:07:19] rhollan: my gut is telling me that something is messed up in the db. I tried deleting all capture cards and readding them, and it made things WORSE: I had 2/3 tuners that could be seen and 2/3 used, and it went to 3/3 seen but only 1/3 used/
[23:13:31] rhollan: at this point I'
[23:13:42] rhollan: m tempted to try to uninstall and reinstall everything :-(
[23:16:52] rhollan: And every-time I go into mythtv-setup the first tuner is set to channel; 18–1 which does not exist.
[23:19:21] rhollan: mythmysqlcheck comes back ok
[23:19:43] rhollan: mysqlcheck, that is
[23:24:56] rhollan: Hmm The displayname fields of tuners 2 and 3 are the same
[23:24:59] rhollan: in the mysql db
[23:26:38] rhollan: but i think that was just my fatfingering
[23:26:43] rhollan: fixed it
