[04:57:30] houms: is there any docs on setting up hauppauge 2250?
[04:58:15] houms: this is version .27 from deb multimedia repo, it seems the driver is loaded http://pastie.org/8668060, i am a bit unclear how to setup the tuner card via myth-setup, I guess a better question is what card type should i be picking for the 2250? I am just using it for recording OTA
[05:01:03] houms: also do i need the firmware (NXP7164-2010-03–10.1.fw) or is that only required for analog?
[05:04:00] Hydr0p0nX: should just need to setup a capture card + video source
[05:04:12] Hydr0p0nX: then map them and scan channels
[05:04:19] auricX (auricX!~neil@202.7.242.170.static.rev.eftel.com) has quit (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
[05:18:48] houms: thanks for response hydroponx, i got it setup now. it was missing the firmware
[05:19:00] houms: now i am at least getting the backend to start and talking to sql
[05:19:06] houms: and mythweb seems to be working
[05:19:17] houms: just trying to find out how to get listing for OTA
[05:21:23] houms: it did pick up 9 channels, which i think is due to the amount of coax and splitters as the tv upstairs has like 45 channels on the same antennta, but it will do for now, as I think i need an amp or perhaps a separate antenna. nonetheless i just want to get listing and record two channels and confirm it is working
[05:22:00] Shadow__X: houms: dont forget to scan the different freqs
[05:23:37] DavidBrooke (DavidBrooke!~DavidBroo@c-69-180-207-35.hsd1.tn.comcast.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[05:23:38] houms: Shadow__X: how do i go about doing that?
[05:24:32] Shadow__X: houms: its within the scanning options. hrc irc etc
[05:24:37] houms: is that for OTA hd antenna?
[05:24:51] houms: i thought that stuff was for cable stuff .. qam etc..
[05:25:14] Shadow__X: not sure but when i was using qam i had to scan those to get all my channels
[05:25:49] houms: thanks for advice. not sure it relates to broadcast OTA which is all i am after at the moment
[05:28:03] houms: if i chose OTA crap nevermind
[05:28:18] houms: just a mythfilldatabase
[05:30:03] wagnerrp: no, don't bother with them
[05:30:09] wagnerrp: you on;y want to use "us-bcast"
[05:30:39] wagnerrp: and 8-vsb
[05:37:06] houms: thanks wagnerp. that is what i suspected. Though i do not have the 8-vsb option
[05:38:23] NightMonkey (NightMonkey!~NightrMon@pdpc/supporter/professional/nightmonkey) has quit (Quit: Body blow! Body blow!)
[05:40:04] wagnerrp: then you're either looking in the wrong place, or have chosen wrong other options
[05:40:21] wagnerrp: broadcast television in north america uses 8vsb
[05:41:05] wagnerrp: when you configured the tuner, did you define it as an MPEG encoder or a DVB tuner?
[05:42:09] houms: dvb tuner . because i am under the impression mpeg is for analog and not hd (mpeg2)
[05:42:31] wagnerrp: there is no "HD" television, merely digital
[05:42:43] houms: which is mpeg2 no?
[05:42:59] wagnerrp: digital may be HD, or SD, but it's all a compressed stream and your tuner cares not either way
[05:43:16] zombor (zombor!~zombor__@kohana/developer/zombor) has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[05:43:29] wagnerrp: digital TV in NA is MPEG2, and so is the output of the MPEG encoder on your card
[05:45:01] houms: then i am not supposed to be using dvb?
[05:45:35] wagnerrp: you should be using dvb

I am thinking either my mythweb.conf is not setup right or because

[18:58:22] houms: stuartm when you say the user, this is a little confusing since running mythubuntu. it seems it is run as the one i am logged in as?

[18:59:52] houms: if i sudo su – mythtv
[19:00:07] houms: and then do groups i get mythtv, dialout, cdrom, audio, video
[19:00:18] houms: so that just leaves a permission problem

[19:24:09] ctmjr: houms how did you set up the cards when you where running mythtv .27 on debian yesterday. and now your running .25 on mythbuntu and it does not work that is why i suggested upgrading, mythbuntu is pretty good at setting things up almost to easy
[19:26:45] houms: yeah i think i will go back to my debian install. they are on separate disks so no biggie but have an even more annoying problem on debian where both shows will not record at the same time. that was working fine yesterday or so i thought, but i had permissions issue with the storage group location and tried to fix that which i think ended up breaking my tuner setup
[19:27:48] lautriv: houms, you can set the amount of simultaneous records per card, given it is on the same transponder.
[19:28:27] houms: yes i know that. they helped me with that yesterday and it was working but something i did today broke it

[22:10:32] lautriv: houms, we are not omnipresent or can be called oracle but guess why we are lurking here ;)
[22:12:47] justinh: BTW, let me just say this to you all. NEVER, ever (!) procrastinate about insulating your loft space. We had a new roof fitted a couple of years ago & to get it up to code we had to fit 270mm of insulation throughout. The last 2 weekends, that's what I've been working on and now it's finished I'm tired & full of regret. Why did we collect so much crap – and why did we put the job off til we'd effectively sold our house?
[22:13:42] houms: :) and i appreciate it like you wouldn't believe
[22:14:06] houms: so i am back on debian and right now i have a single capture card configured with 2 recordings at a time
[22:14:24] houms: but when i go to record two things only the first one is recording
[22:14:26] justinh: I've just thrown out another two framegrabbers I forgot I had
[22:14:55] justinh: those & two ancient Nvidia cards.. AGP with TV outputs.. probably FX5200 or so
[22:15:01] houms: should i be setting up both adapter0 and adapter1?
[22:15:05] stuartm: justinh: I did that last year (or was it the year before?) – trips to the tip and charity stores every other day to get rid of all the crap, though there's still some stuff stored up there
[22:15:33] justinh: stuartm: almost the whole loft was boarded. It was a bloody nightmare getting those up. Nailed down!
[22:15:42] stuartm: added another 200mm to the insulation, but I can't say I've noticed the difference, heat leaves this place through the walls :/
[22:16:28] lautriv: houms, you can only use more than one channel to record from the same card if they are on the same transponder, else you need another card/tunder.
[22:16:28] justinh: we had to get one of those stupid EPCs for selling the place. I wouldn't care but it's only a box-ticking points adding thing. No matter that your house construction type isn't suited to cavity insulation
[22:16:32] stuartm: justinh: I left the boarding down and put the additional insulation on top – can't say whether that's in line with the current regs, but it made the job easier
[22:16:54] justinh: oh yeah it would.. then some.. and what the inspector can't see ;-)
[22:17:36] houms: this card 2250 hauppauge says dual tuner and says i can record two at the same time
[22:17:45] houms: i assume then i need the second adapter
[22:17:57] herda05 (herda05!~dherring@74-92-165-205-Oregon.hfc.comcastbusiness.net) has quit (Quit: This computer has gone to sleep)
[22:18:31] justinh: I was gonna do that, but I was on a mission this time – I wasn't willing to gamble the buildings inspector would be okay with it all. So I slaughtered the job – inspection is next Thursday, which it's bound to pass – then I can REST!
[22:19:22] justinh: like my wife rang him & said we'd taken up all the boards except the ones over the hallway – would that be okay? He said yes. I wasn't calling his bluff since we bought enough to do the whole lot
[22:19:25] stuartm: I actually ended up with 4 rolls (still wrapped) left over because I took advantage of a bulk-buy offer, might just put those down as well, don't think it will help but it can't hurt and it's better than them sitting around doing nothing
[22:19:33] lautriv: houms, sure, it's one card but 2 tuners. you can still record more than one per tuner if they are on the same transponder. to get an idea how they are bundled, record a channel and try to switch live-tv on the same card..... you will see just a few of all channels, those are on the same transponder.
[22:20:07] justinh: stuartm: the difference it's made.. I've never seen my breath in the loft.. until today
[22:20:51] justinh: stuartm: but as you say, if there's a bigger area to lose heat from it'll go from there first
[22:21:23] justinh: we don't use our gas fire anymore, so I block up the flue with a towel. That makes a massive difference
[22:21:51] lautriv: houms, if you have a closer look into the preferences of schedules, you can select on which input you will record. this way you may record even 8 things on 2 tuners, given they are balanced on 2 common transponders.
[22:22:11] stuartm: justinh: that's the next thing I was going to look at, we've got two open fires, the wind howls down them when they aren't in use
[22:22:55] stuartm: the recommend solution is a 'chimney balloon', so going to give that a go
[22:23:10] justinh: yeah I heard about those after I did the towel trick.
[22:23:25] justinh: but it was one of the dog's old towels so I didn't care much
[22:23:40] justinh: oh and lime mortar dust.. is EVIL
[22:24:01] stuartm: justinh: just remember to remove the towel before you go, don't want the headline "family killed by carbon monoxide poisoning days after moving into new home"
[22:24:36] justinh: hahaha
[22:25:15] stuartm: something in the mortar dust that falls down the chimney here causes the flames to turn green – it's pretty cool
[22:25:16] houms: 8 things on 2 tuners at the same time?

[22:26:51] houms: well that box has quad core and 8gig so if it can do 2 i would be happy
[22:27:03] stuartm: record during testing of the feature was 11 programmes from one tuner – we limit it to 5 just to be on the safe side
[22:27:45] justinh: I managed 10 on one on my very old 800Mhz athlon box. CPU load was pretty heavy throughout
[22:27:46] stuartm: honestly if you can find 8 things to record at the same time on TV then you're doing better than most of us
[22:27:52] houms: and oddly some of the channels have program data and others don't which is odd
[22:27:53] lautriv: houms, a transponder is sending a crapload of data containing video/audio(even several languages and quality) and data. what you record is just a matter of : selection-filter,selected transponder, maximum speed which you can process without bottleneck.
[22:28:09] houms: lol i don't think tv has ever been that interesting
[22:28:32] houms: so i didn't really need to buy a dual tuner?
[22:28:38] houms: dumbass i am
[22:29:00] lautriv: houms, nope. unlikely you match always the same transponder.
[22:29:46] lautriv: houms, and even than, you may record 2 while listening radio or view a third.
[22:30:08] houms: damn it...at least i know now :/
[22:30:20] stuartm: houms: no, dual tuner is good, you can still only record things on the one tuner if they are on the same frequency – since you appear to be in the US, I believe that's a maximum of 2–3 channels which will often be related anyway, e.g. HD/SD version of the same channel
[22:30:58] houms: ah i see. still good to know that it is possible
[22:31:05] justinh: stuartm: oh and only one or two itches since doing the install too.
[22:31:07] stuartm: houms: the rest of us (outside north america) often have several different channels 8 or more on a single frequency
[22:31:12] houms: wish i would have known before, but hey thats why i'm here

[22:32:11] stuartm: justinh: I was wearing the full kit, learnt my lesson the hard way in the past
[22:32:26] justinh: houms: it's not always nice. the picture quality on those 8 channel transponders sucks
[22:32:34] justinh: stuartm: so was I
[22:32:45] stuartm: should have seen how black the outside of the mask was when I took it off – glad that didn't end up in my lungs
[22:33:14] houms: it is not showing in upcoming recordings but in recording schedule it shows up with last recorded time 0000-00–00 00:00:00
[22:33:34] stuartm: guess that's what you get in 90 year old property in an industrial city
[22:33:46] houms: where do i check eit?
[22:33:47] lautriv: justinh, i have some bundles with HD, no problem of quality just seldom time to even watch it ;)
[22:33:51] justinh: stuartm: I can imagine. I was fully respiratored up.. and still there's black gunk in my nostrils
[22:34:23] justinh: lautriv: or the other problem.. little actually worth watching :P
[22:34:54] lautriv: justinh, that is, 95% crap for dumb homemates and ads.
[22:37:38] houms: okay maybe this is related to the problem of the program not recording. when i exit out of myhtv-setup i get unable to create file /var/lib/mythtv/videos//.test – director is not writable
[22:37:58] justinh: houms: so make it so the mythtv user can write to it
[22:38:11] ** justinh curses. /var/lib/mythtv/ .. blah **
[22:39:52] lautriv: houms, i wonder about that because debain defaults to create a proper uid/gid for mythtv and its dir ...
[22:40:53] houms: well that is the thing

[22:46:51] houms: the mythweb dir under /var/lib that is
[22:48:10] lautriv: houms, i checked mine and you are right. we made a common mistake and ran mythtv-setup somewhen as root but that contains only channel-icons.
[22:48:28] |PSU|: found my answer...was removed in 0.27 (http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Scheduling_Recordings)
[22:48:36] houms: fair enough. trust me the whole install has my head spinning.
[22:49:16] houms: as i am running mythtv-setup with the only user account i created during install. not sure if that is proper either. i did however add that user to the mythtv group
[22:50:07] houms: was 755 supposed to change the s bit on videos?
[22:52:44] houms: yeah something is fubared. i tried changing the dir to /var/libmythtv for the videos storage group and now the error is the same except it is the mythtv dir and not the video dir

[22:54:00] houms: only thing i can think of is my user is running mythtv-setup so it only has group permissions, and the permissions do not allow group to write to those dirs which would explain the error.
[22:54:18] houms: just not sure how to resolve correctly other than changing permissions for the dir to 775
[22:55:24] lautriv: houms, you should run the mythtv-setup AS mythtv which was created while you selected the package. (uid/gid 999)
[22:56:51] houms: is there a way to do that over ssh? or headless?
[22:57:01] houms: when i try i get cannot connect to x server
[22:57:10] houms: i thought there was a way around that
[22:58:22] houms: i can try xforwarding over ssh which is how i was accessing it as the user account on the box anyway, but with the mythtv user i get X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication.
[22:58:46] lautriv: houms, ssh -Y mythtv@yourbackend mythtv-setup
[22:59:09] houms: i assume i need to set the password first?

[23:08:32] houms: thank you lautriv... now i just have to figure out how to view the videos in mythweb
[23:09:18] lautriv: where the main issue was not 2 programs but the ability to write on hdd ( myth is actually never live but approx 2 seconds ahoead due to writing on disk and seeking from there)
[23:09:25] houms: when i try to play one of them from the recorded programs section it throws error saying /mythweb/mythweb.pl/pl/stream/1051/1390777680.asx was not found on this server.
[23:09:31] herda05: hey all, quick question, to record multiple shows using an HDhomerun ATSC tuner, would I need more than one of them?
[23:10:09] herda05: actually mentions dual tuners, so if I wanted to record 4 shows I'd need two of them?
[23:11:04] houms: so lautriv when i do mythtvsetup over ssh like that and it asks to stop backend
[23:11:12] lautriv: herda05, since you was already logged in while we talked about it, just scroll up.
[23:11:29] houms: after i exit do i need to restart backend? also i do not have to mythfilldatabase manually do i?
[23:11:57] lautriv: houms, in that case, it'll usually auto-restart. at least on 0.27
[23:12:09] houms: herda lautriv is talking about the schooling he gave me re tuners above
[23:13:21] houms: and mythfilldatabase does not need to be run manually correct? do you know what is broken in mythweb, or at least my installation?
[23:13:34] lautriv: houms, in default situations, you don't need manually mythfilldatabase but if you got a fresh setup it would be faster than waiting for it.
[23:14:07] herda05: ok got it, thanks
[23:14:51] lautriv: herda05, but i never owned a hdhomerun, you may check how it transfers to myth ( maybe pre-filtered)
[23:16:31] houms: it seems the debian mythweb package is not set up properly by default . far as i can tell the mythweb.pl is in /usr/share/mythtv/mythweb
[23:16:56] houms: not certain what the proper permissions are so that i can view the stream
[23:21:42] sjmikem1: Noob question: does backend stream data from the source to the front end? or does it just tell the frontend how to connect to the source?
[23:24:41] Tobbe5178 (Tobbe5178!~asdf@h104n2-sv-a13.ias.bredband.telia.com) has quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[23:25:14] houms: where would the pl directory for streaming be? is this something that is created?
[23:26:34] paul-h (paul-h!~Paul@90.216.180.215) has quit (Quit: Konversation terminated!)
[23:27:15] kisak: sjmikem1: all streams go to the mythbackend, then seperately are sent to the mythfrontend
[23:28:34] kisak: that should be mythbackend(s) and mythfrontend(s)
[23:31:59] houms: should i be changing permissions for /usr/share/mythtv/mythweb or symlinking somewhere else and then adusting the web.conf to point to new location?
[23:34:19] SmallwoodDR82 (SmallwoodDR82!~Smallwood@unaffiliated/smallwooddr82) has quit (Quit: and I'm out...)
[23:36:39] Dave123_ (Dave123_!~Dave123@cpe-74-74-202-129.rochester.res.rr.com) has joined #mythtv-users
[23:37:13] lautriv: houms, my mythweb is owned by www-data which is default for apache
[23:37:41] ** lautriv -> bed, laters **
[23:38:37] materdaddy (materdaddy!~mmrosko@wsip-70-164-99-62.sd.sd.cox.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[23:39:21] sjmikem1: kisak: yeah that's what I figured…any rationale for that? e.g. I have homerunhd which is tuning all the transcoding… why is backend necessary for anything besides control?
[23:40:18] houms: here is my error http://pastie.org/8670318
[23:40:23] houms: thanks lautriv
[23:40:31] houms: so the debian package is broken i think
[23:41:11] houms: as it defaults to root.root
[23:41:18] houms: will give it a try, thanks again for all your help
[23:43:17] houms: okay that does not seem to make a difference. I guess i am not sure but there is no pl directory
[23:43:40] |PSU|: anyone familiar with the PVR-350 gray remote? i've got it partially working, but don't have all of the buttons (e.g., back, exit, etc.)
