[01:39:21] |PSU|: hi guys...i tried upgrading from 0.25 -> 0.27 tonight and now i'm receiving an error message when i start the frontend that the database is 2 versions out of date. i tried upgrading the db from mythtv-setup but apparently it didn't upgrade successfully. has anyone seen this before?
[01:51:32] tonsofpcs: |PSU|: I had issues going 0.25 > 0.26 with mythbuntu a while a go and ended up manually rolling back to 0.25. I figure when 0.28 comes out, I'll blow away the whole thing.

[01:52:30] tonsofpcs: I have some oddities in my setup though so my system shouldn't be the norm

[03:47:56] Korny: stereo output with 5.1 uplink? I'm confused
[03:48:02] Korny: is it stereo or 5.1?
[03:50:17] |PSU|: Korny: just standard stero output (headphone / speaker jack on the back of my PC)...using the "Upconvert stereo to 5.1 surround" setting in mytht
[03:50:58] Korny: so how would the center channel have any output at all if you're only using a 2 channels?
[03:52:09] |PSU|: well it worked on my old setup (mythdora)...since mythdora is upconverting it, i am pretty sure it takes in 5.1 at the receiver
[03:52:23] |PSU|: *mythtv
[03:53:27] Korny: 5.1 requires either optical or spdif or hdmi connection
[03:53:59] |PSU|: ok, so what does the upconvert option do?
[03:55:09] Korny: you can't use a single headphone 2 channel to do 5.1, your recieve may have been doing the conversion from stereo to 5.1,but thats independent of mythtv. Upconvert takes stereo sources like some TV shows and movies and converts them to 5.1 but you still need the afore mentioned connections
[03:55:24] Korny: recieve= reciever
[03:55:56] andreaz (andreaz!~andre_000@p57922B89.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) has quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[03:56:13] wagnerrp: technically it doesn't, but if you're doing 5.1 analog, you're going to need three different wires going into your sound card
[03:56:18] wagnerrp: one wire is two channels
[03:56:44] wagnerrp: i've got a set of 4.0 speakers running off a pair of jacks
[03:56:58] |PSU|: ok
[03:57:08] Korny: well 1 headphone jack is actually 3 wires :P
[03:57:34] wagnerrp: s/wires/cables/
[03:57:37] zombor (zombor!~zombor__@kohana/developer/zombor) has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[03:57:53] Korny: so 4.0 makes perfect sense with 2 jacks
[03:58:01] |PSU|: so then, what's a cheap digital audio card that works well with myth? :)
[03:58:13] Korny: your motherboard doesn't have one?
[03:58:36] Korny: or how old is your TV, does it have HDMI?
[03:58:48] |PSU|: umm...let me chk. ~4–5 yr old dell PC. TV / Receiver has HDMI
[03:59:04] wagnerrp: discrete graphics?
[03:59:44] ** Korny likes his gt520/gt610 fanless cards **
[04:00:05] |PSU|: Korny: no digital output that i can see
[04:00:14] |PSU|: where were u going with the HDMI?
[04:00:24] Korny: I'd just get a nvidia gt610
[04:01:05] Korny: 40 dollars, hdmi vpadu and it can passthrough all audio
[04:01:56] |PSU|: so i'd need one HDMI cable from myth box to receiver?
[04:02:12] wagnerrp: much easier than optical/coax

[04:06:02] Korny: have you checked mythtved audio sync?
[04:06:03] wagnerrp: is that some kind of server chassis?
[04:06:05] kjj: in my frontend logs, I see things like Pulse: PulseAudio resume OK
[04:06:21] wagnerrp: odd to see front and side retention rails
[04:06:24] Korny: its a 4u rosewill case, the one I was talking about the other day with 15 HD slots
[04:07:08] wagnerrp: yeah, you only see those on servers and workstations where you are more likely to find heavy full length cards
[04:07:10] Korny: the right most cross bar holds 3 120mm fans
[04:07:25] kjj: I'm not sure what mythtved is
[04:07:44] Korny: kjj I miss typed
[04:07:45] wagnerrp: not a retention rail?

[04:08:14] Korny: wagnerrp: by retention rail you mean for the cables, yes it is that as well
[04:08:24] Korny: the cables go under then fans
[04:08:25] kjj: doesn't help. audio goes to hell when I get outside of the +/- 500 ms window, which isn't anywhere near enough
[04:08:44] wagnerrp: no, i mean slots to grab the front of expansion cards, so they're not cantilevered off the slot
[04:10:02] Korny: oh that, I was really surprised how deep the case is, 24" without the handles upfront which I took off
[04:11:23] Korny: not a bad case for 73 dollars shipped to my house,

[04:13:18] wagnerrp: i am failing to come up with anything...
[04:13:41] wagnerrp: anyway, really long cards, like big RAID cards or workstation graphics cards often have a bracket on the front
[04:13:48] wagnerrp: which slides into a rail in the front of the case
[04:13:56] wagnerrp: so they're supported on both the front and back
[04:14:08] Korny: makes sense
[04:14:09] wagnerrp: and not supported by the IO slot
[04:14:31] wagnerrp: i figured that's what the front bar was

[13:19:53] jya: samsung hard drives are owned by seagate?
[13:19:57] stuartm: had a bad experience with the WD Green and the idle issue, especially as the firmware flashing app they provided to fix it wouldn't work on my machines
[13:20:09] stuartm: jya: yeah, 2–3 years now
[13:20:33] jya: i never bothered changing the idle values on my wd green, after 3.5 years they are still doing great.
[13:20:44] jya: I just purchased 6 , 4TB RED for my nas machine
[13:21:12] stuartm: jya: admittedly the one I had is still going, although I moved it into a NAS where it's mostly idle anyway
[13:22:13] stuartm: decided to go with a WD drive for backups, as they generally (green issues aside) seem to be pretty reliable
[13:22:16] jya: I'm moving to a centralised data storage... did a big nas ; and access everything from there.
[13:22:51] jya: i'm building two new machines here, only putting the smallest SSD I can find
[13:23:11] stuartm: a 1TB external drive was exactly the same price no matter which one you went for, so unusually the decision came down to the manufacturer alone
[13:23:34] jya: prices are always within a few $ usually...
[13:23:39] jya: at least that's the case here
[13:24:23] stuartm: there's generally a spread for internal drives here, although they fluctuate a fair bit
[13:24:25] jya: within the same category of course
[13:24:41] jya: not comparing black vs green etc
[13:25:51] stuartm: in this instance all the different offerings were within a few pence of each other, just under £50
[13:29:15] stuartm: anyway, when this one arrives I can move my backups off the 1TB internal drive I'm using now so that I can move that to the NAS and use it for storing blu-ray rips
[13:29:32] jya: 1TB isn't much for that
[13:30:18] stuartm: no, but it's just making use of the drives I happen to have around, I've run out of space on my other drives (more or less)
[13:31:57] stuartm: at 30–40GB a rip, it's still going to take me a while to fill it – I don't buy that many discs a year
[13:34:16] jya: if you want a little bit more space, and slightly faster speed. you could always get this.

[13:45:02] stuartm: I used to play from disc until they revoked the key I was using
[13:49:00] jya: yeah, same deal here, my pioneer stopped one day after I attempted to play The Wall yet-another-release on bluray

[13:52:02] jya: before I managed to get that new aacs key; I had anydvd-hd running in a windows 7 VM and exporting via windows share the decrypted disk... and on the myth frontend, attempting the play the bluray would trigger a script that simply mounted that share and then I played the directory.
[13:52:23] jya: that has worked well: some cut here and there which can be annoying as it's never 100% perfect

[21:19:08] Korny: Did you know you can't add titles with forward slashes into mythvideo
[21:19:16] Korny: I'm assuming its a mysql limitation
[21:22:43] justinh: why would that be a problem?
[21:23:56] stuartm: it wouldn't be mysql, we use prepared statements and bound values so we can stick any character we like in the database without issue
[21:24:11] stuartm: the problem will be elsewhere in the code
[21:25:26] justinh: hmm if a gt210 offers hdmi audio, why bother getting a more expensive card?
[21:26:00] Korny: different vpadu profiles
[21:26:41] Korny: althought the gt520 and gt610 aren't that much more expensive if at all
[21:26:52] Korny: does the gt210 do hdma?
[21:27:00] Korny: or whatever its called
[21:27:10] justinh: hdma?
[21:28:08] justinh: a passive gt610 won't fit in the case
[21:28:14] Korny: stuartm I haven't looked at the logs, but try manually adding a move with this tmdb number 2450186
[21:28:36] Korny: they make some low profile ones don't that
[21:28:39] Korny: that = they
[21:29:10] justinh: hmm. Starting to think about the long HDMI cable again
[21:29:35] Korny: http://www.asus.com/News/s3uOpCJHYLTl31xy/
[21:30:21] justinh: still too deep
[21:30:49] Korny: Feature Set D
[21:30:49] Korny: Similar to feature set C but added support for decoding H.264 with a resolution of up to 4032 × 4080 and MPEG-1/MPEG-2 with a resolution of up to 4032 × 4048 pixels.
[21:31:06] justinh: nah I think I can forget about turning the current frontend into a HD one
[21:31:57] justinh: it's going in the bin (EBAY)
[21:32:30] justinh: and rather than splurge stupid money on a big ugly box (HTPC case) I might as well just combine FE & BE
[21:32:45] Korny: Hmm wonder if that means the gt510/gt610(gt520) are capable of doing 4k decoding
[21:33:00] justinh: Korny: 4k resolution but likely not the codecs
[21:33:11] justinh: h.265 et al. Eeek
[21:33:57] Korny: 265 is a ways out, its still not very optimized
[21:34:18] justinh: there's no standard as such yet
[21:34:26] messerting (messerting!~messertin@cm-84.209.22.230.getinternet.no) has quit (Quit: Konversation terminated!)
[21:34:34] justinh: so buying into 4k is pretty much a waste of time like 3D was (and still is)
[21:34:53] justinh: and still only 24fps or 30fps or 50 fps. Gah
[21:35:46] Korny: its a waste of time for 95% of people in home, I have a 55" tv I can barely tell the diference between 720p and 1080p(I do have a fairly decent upcoverting Denon Amplifier) but still
[21:36:15] Korny: people shouldn't be sitting that close to the TV so they can see the difference
[21:36:26] justinh: I can just about tell the difference between SD & HD on my parents' telly.. but mostly because of the bitrate/encoding quality differences
[21:37:01] Korny: I was reading the tv manfactures at CES were stating you should be sitting at 1.5 the size of the tv away from the screen
[21:37:20] justinh: meh. 30 quid for gt610.. the price of quite a long HDMI cable. hahaha
[21:37:38] justinh: ah but then the card in the backend won't do HDMI audio
[21:37:48] justinh: damnit I hate having to use a PC
[21:38:15] justinh: having to use a PC to avoid the utter suckage that is commercial DVRs & media players
[21:39:25] justinh: a gentle reminder that the 'free' DVR is still pretty expensive :-)

[21:40:31] Korny: for a front end
[21:40:34] justinh: because 'cheap' there way over my budget
[21:40:42] Korny: whats your budget?
[21:40:51] justinh: less than a new frontend cheap
[21:41:26] justinh: the backend sits there all day, all night, with the lowest cost pci-e VGA card I could buy – and it's got HDMI & VDPAU – but not HDMI audio
[21:41:30] justinh: so why not use that instead?

[21:42:07] Korny: what card doesn't have hdmi audio?
[21:42:20] justinh: and as a media centre XBMC on the Pi may not be as snazzy as on a system with a proper CPU but it does the job better than anything in the commercial embedded world
[21:42:40] justinh: it's just that the cmyth extension is infuriatingly slow on that]
[21:42:51] Korny: cmyth sucks on regular systems
[21:43:22] Korny: what card are you trying to use?
[21:43:38] justinh: currently in the backend is a 8400GS
[21:43:44] Korny: Because most cards will passthrough the lower bitrate stuff
[21:43:55] Korny: does that card even do vdpau?
[21:44:00] justinh: yup
[21:44:36] Korny: but it doesn't do audio?
[21:45:00] justinh: nope
[21:46:53] Korny: you check alsamixer to make sure the source isn't muted?
[21:46:56] justinh: my current thinking is that I'm going to keep the backend hidden in the new house but run a long HDMI cable – it was either that or replace the aged frontend with something A) I've got now (the Pi).. or bin it altogether – or pep it up a little
[21:48:12] justinh: Korny: the 8400GS has no audio device. At all. Maybe it'd do passthru – but this is all irrelevant since I don't have a HDTV yet
[21:48:34] justinh: but – when we move the CRT TV is going to the tip
[21:48:41] Korny: I am jsut reading that, strange
[21:49:08] justinh: the early VDPAU capable cards had no audio, or a SPDIF connector at best
[21:50:07] Korny: yeah reading that, meh just get a giant case like https://www.dropbox.com/s/hw3o6hv24vwy0yd/201 . . . 15.19.11.jpg and you can get any videocard you want :P
[21:50:31] justinh: the frontend is to sit on a shelf above the TV. Out of the way of the kids
[21:50:47] justinh: and cannot be a FUGLY case. The LC02 is ugly enough
[21:51:02] Korny: lol
[21:52:17] Korny: for about 250 without parts from my stash I had put a list together for a mini itx system
[21:53:00] Korny: usd sorry
[21:53:11] justinh: yeah it's double that in UK pounds
[21:53:40] Korny: but a cheap laptop with a broken screen on fleebay
[21:53:47] Korny: err buy
[21:54:35] justinh: see the crappy LC02 frontend has a mobile chipset motherboard inside.. and the Intel video driver for the svideo out was majorly borked so I got myself a rare pci-e card with analogue TV out.. which is connected by a riser cable & is mounted horizontally in the case
[21:54:56] justinh: yeah the laptop is an option. if it has nvidia graphics
[21:57:15] Korny: or intel if it has a new enough chip
