[00:33:43] | Ricky_Rat5005 (Ricky_Rat5005!~Ricky_Rat@c-71-195-247-111.hsd1.ut.comcast.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:34:46] | Ricky_Rat5005: | Hi, I'm interested in breaking ties with Windows Media Center. I'm wondering if there are any devices (other than a PC that can stream tv to (and control), like the XBox can with Windows). |
[00:36:07] | wagnerrp: | you mean like UPNP? |
[00:36:30] | DonkeyHotei: | your question appears to be a sentence fragment, and i'm failing to parse it |
[00:36:38] | wagnerrp: | yeah |
[00:37:01] | wagnerrp: | are you asking if there are hardware decides that mythtv can stream content to? |
[00:37:07] | wagnerrp: | s/decides/devices/ |
[00:37:40] | Ricky_Rat5005: | Yes, anything like roku, etc. |
[00:38:17] | wagnerrp: | mythtv supports UPNP |
[00:38:31] | DonkeyHotei: | isn't there an android app or a mobile web interface? |
[00:38:45] | wagnerrp: | there is a third-party android app |
[00:38:54] | DonkeyHotei: | thought so |
[00:39:17] | Ricky_Rat5005: | How about something I can hook to a TV in another room for example. |
[00:39:33] | DonkeyHotei: | some tv's support upnp natively |
[00:39:45] | wagnerrp: | best to pick up a real PC and use the native client |
[00:40:09] | DonkeyHotei: | wagnerrp: he could use a thin client; no need for a full pc |
[00:40:25] | DonkeyHotei: | or a similar device |
[00:40:31] | Ricky_Rat5005: | Would something like the raspberry pi work? |
[00:40:34] | wagnerrp: | no, thin clients are not possible |
[00:40:44] | wagnerrp: | it's stupid to try to pump uncompressed video across the network like that |
[00:41:03] | DonkeyHotei: | the pi can run xbmc, which can in turn be a myth frontend |
[00:41:20] | wagnerrp: | well.. i won't say they're not possible, but it's not realistic to take up the bulk of a gigabit network just for one HD frontend |
[00:41:55] | DonkeyHotei: | wagnerrp: but what about backends and frontends being on separate machines in general? |
[00:42:11] | wagnerrp: | perfectly fine |
[00:42:28] | wagnerrp: | i've got four different machines running as dedicated frontends |
[00:42:55] | DonkeyHotei: | well, many devices could run a myth frontend, which is not necessarily mythfrontend itself |
[00:43:05] | DonkeyHotei: | i've already mentioned xbmc |
[00:43:10] | Ricky_Rat5005: | +wagnerrp: it works with WMC (Streaming to xbox for example) |
[00:43:26] | wagnerrp: | the same thing applies to xbmc. it makes no sense to try to use xbmc as a thin client |
[00:43:57] | DonkeyHotei: | xbmc would just be another mythfrontend |
[00:44:13] | wagnerrp: | ok? it's still a PC running an application |
[00:44:25] | DonkeyHotei: | not necessarily a pc |
[00:44:37] | DonkeyHotei: | many odd devices can run xbmc |
[00:44:46] | DonkeyHotei: | there is even xbmc for android |
[00:44:46] | wagnerrp: | i don't limit "PC" to "x86 desktop" |
[00:45:58] | DonkeyHotei: | well, he was looking for an alternative to WMC, which is tied to "x86 desktop" and he mentioned roku, which is a pc by your definition |
[00:46:23] | wagnerrp: | by my personal definition, no, because you do not have control over what runs on a roku |
[00:46:36] | DonkeyHotei: | you can |
[00:47:07] | DonkeyHotei: | and there are plenty of similar devices that give you even more control over what runs on them |
[00:47:54] | DonkeyHotei: | this is why things like OpenELEC exist |
[00:48:33] | BLZbubba (BLZbubba!~mark@pdpc/supporter/professional/blzbubba) has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[00:50:03] | andreaz (andreaz!~andre_000@p4FE64385.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) has quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[00:50:32] | Ricky_Rat5005: | wow... so I am better off just having a PC in the living room then. |
[00:50:50] | wagnerrp: | that depends |
[00:50:52] | DonkeyHotei: | Ricky_Rat5005: depends on your definition of a "pc" |
[00:51:08] | wagnerrp: | one of my frontends is not in my living room, but in my basement, with cables running up through the floor |
[00:51:14] | DonkeyHotei: | there are set-top boxes that run android |
[00:51:30] | wagnerrp: | another frontend is a little mini-itx board with an ivy bridge chip |
[00:51:54] | wagnerrp: | another is my work laptop, when i boot it off an iscsi image on the network |
[00:52:22] | wagnerrp: | you can run UPNP clients, with reduced functionality |
[00:52:29] | wagnerrp: | you can run XBMC, again with reduced functionality |
[00:52:46] | DonkeyHotei: | wagnerrp: what functionality is reduced with xbmc? |
[00:53:00] | wagnerrp: | much of the recording/livetv functionality |
[00:53:09] | DonkeyHotei: | how so? |
[00:53:10] | wagnerrp: | it's there, but not to the same degree as in the official client |
[00:54:12] | wagnerrp: | as for running mythtv directly on things like ARMs and the like, it's not going to happen until someone writes support for their hardware decoders |
[00:54:12] | DonkeyHotei: | i'm intending to set up an htpc with xbmc on the same machine as the backend, because xbmc has a cleaner UI and extra functionality |
[00:54:15] | Ricky_Rat5005: | Ok, here is my current setup... I have a Windows 7 PC in my workout room, and an Xbox 360 connected to my TV with HDMI. I'd like to make the Windows 7 PC run (linux of course) Myth Tv and be able to be controlled in that room (there is a TV in there), but have the ability to also record/play, live tv to my family room TV (the Xbox allows this with full control). |
[00:54:49] | wagnerrp: | the xbox won't really be able to take part in anything but WMC |
[00:54:53] | DonkeyHotei: | as far as arm goes, xbmc is already doing that in some cases |
[00:55:34] | DonkeyHotei: | the x in xbmc was for xbox, but i don't think that's supported anymore |
[00:55:58] | DonkeyHotei: | and it was definitely not for the 360 |
[00:56:07] | Ricky_Rat5005: | yes, I get I need to replace the XBOX. I'm wondering what I need to replace it with for FULL functionality. I still want the files to be stored on the workout room pc (that is where I have my raid array set up for large storage space). |
[00:56:58] | DonkeyHotei: | so you want to get rid of w7 altogether? |
[00:57:19] | Ricky_Rat5005: | yes, make that one a unix box with myth pc. |
[00:57:26] | Ricky_Rat5005: | (workout room pc) |
[00:57:55] | Ricky_Rat5005: | (or linux I suppose!!) |
[00:58:09] | DonkeyHotei: | it's currently just a dektop machine? i.e. connected to a normal monitor with a keyboard and mouse |
[00:58:18] | Ricky_Rat5005: | Yes. exactly |
[00:58:38] | Ricky_Rat5005: | with one monitor and one hdmi tv in the room |
[00:58:39] | DonkeyHotei: | what do you use it for besides wmc? |
[00:58:52] | Ricky_Rat5005: | play DVD's |
[00:58:56] | DonkeyHotei: | the desktop pc, that is |
[00:59:06] | Ricky_Rat5005: | Yes, just DVD's. |
[00:59:08] | Ricky_Rat5005: | and Wmc |
[00:59:36] | DonkeyHotei: | do you play the dvd's on the connected monitor, or only through the xbox? |
[01:00:33] | Ricky_Rat5005: | the xbox is in a different room (family room). I play workout dvd's on the WMC PC in the workout room and movies on the xbox in the family room. |
[01:00:45] | wagnerrp: | actual DVDs, or images? |
[01:00:51] | DonkeyHotei: | what hardware are you using to record from tv? |
[01:01:06] | wagnerrp: | all of my DVD's are imaged up, and streamed across the network |
[01:01:52] | wagnerrp: | yeah, thats a big one... what kind of tuner? |
[01:01:57] | Ricky_Rat5005: | Two HD Homerun tuners – (4 tuners total) |
[01:02:06] | wagnerrp: | standard HDHRs? not primes? |
[01:02:13] | Ricky_Rat5005: | yes standard |
[01:02:20] | DonkeyHotei: | homerun prime, or just the qam ones? |
[01:02:32] | DonkeyHotei: | sorry, my typing is slow |
[01:02:38] | Ricky_Rat5005: | not prime |
[01:02:45] | wagnerrp: | ok, no problem there |
[01:02:59] | Ricky_Rat5005: | will mythtv not support the primes? |
[01:03:00] | wagnerrp: | if they were primes, you could still potentially use them, but we cannot handle any form of DRM |
[01:03:08] | Ricky_Rat5005: | ahh ok. |
[01:03:11] | wagnerrp: | any content marked for copy protection will not be available to anything but WMC |
[01:03:22] | DonkeyHotei: | xbmc could actually deal with hdhr (prime or not) even without myth |
[01:03:35] | wagnerrp: | (WMC is the only software DVR that has gone through the length and costly process to get licensed by CableLabs) |
[01:06:00] | DonkeyHotei: | i'd recommend installing mythbuntu on the machine you have connected to the raid |
[01:06:18] | wagnerrp: | if you have no experience with linux, go mythbuntu |
[01:06:30] | wagnerrp: | if you have used linux before, use whatever distro you're comfortable with |
[01:06:50] | Ricky_Rat5005: | ok, and for the family room? |
[01:07:05] | wagnerrp: | i would say the same |
[01:08:07] | DonkeyHotei: | i'd also recommend reformatting the raid without any form of bios-assisted raid connection and just linux's software raid, md |
[01:09:08] | Ricky_Rat5005: | can mythbuntu play bluray dvds? |
[01:09:22] | wagnerrp: | to a limited degree |
[01:09:46] | wagnerrp: | it doesn't have a virtual machine to drive the menu system |
[01:09:59] | wagnerrp: | and it cannot handle the encryption on all disks |
[01:10:36] | wagnerrp: | if you want to use blurays, you're better off just storing the decrypted m2ts in the video library |
[01:11:16] | Ricky_Rat5005: | it would be more a redbox thing (not ones I own) |
[01:11:30] | DonkeyHotei: | for the family room, i'd recommend xbmc of some sort |
[01:12:23] | DonkeyHotei: | if you rent blurays you'll want a stand-alone bluray player |
[01:12:32] | wagnerrp: | for rented bluray, just have a standalone player |
[01:13:09] | Ricky_Rat5005: | ok, sounds great! Thanks for all your help. Sounds like I need to install mythbuntu and just start testing. |
[01:13:35] | Ricky_Rat5005: | Thanks guys! |

[16:13:53] | DarthFrog: | Good morning folks. In 0.27, is it possible to set channel priorities? Specifically, when the same show is being shown on a SD channel and an HD channel (but not identified as an HD broadcast), can we _a priori_ globally set the HD channel as the one to record from? |
[16:15:31] | DarthFrog: | In my area (Vancouver, BC), the cable co. is transmitting the SD feed and the HD feed from the same station. I'd like to set MythTV to always record the HD feed and ignore the SD feed. Or should I just delete the SD channel in Shedules Direct? |
[16:17:26] | ralfp (ralfp!~quassel@dslb-092-073-161-134.pools.arcor-ip.net) has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[16:17:33] | wagnerrp: | there is an option to tell mythtv to add a +10 to any show marked as HD |
[16:18:31] | DarthFrog: | wagnerrp: That's just it, many of the shows aren't marked as HD and the scheduler seems to prefer the SD channel in that case. |
[16:19:00] | wagnerrp: | probably because the SD channel is a lower number, and thus defined earlier |
[16:20:08] | DarthFrog: | That's what I was thinking. 'Twould be nice if we could define channel pairs (i.e. SD and corresponding HD channels) and tell MythTV to prefer the HD channel. |
[16:21:00] | wagnerrp: | just disable the SD channel in your lineup |
[16:21:31] | DarthFrog: | Yeah, I suppose. But that seems inelegant. |

[21:39:02] | mattwj2002: | man linux package updates are soooo much faster than Windows updates |
[21:39:03] | mattwj2002: | :) |
[21:39:36] | bill6502: | sorahn: paste your command line please |
[21:39:44] | bill6502: | here |
[21:41:02] | sorahn: | bill6502: $ mysql_tzinfo_to_sql /usr/share/zoneinfo | mysql -u root -pHU0DmUHZ mysql |
[21:42:12] | sorahn: | i hate mysql. I hate everything to do with it. I hate it at work, I hate it at home. I just hate it. |
[21:43:05] | mattwj2002: | sorahn: I think you just gave the Internet your mysql password |
[21:43:09] | mattwj2002: | just fyi |
[21:43:19] | sorahn: | good |
[21:43:22] | bill6502: | so if you just do: mysql_tzinfo_to_sql /usr/share/zoneinfo does the output start with: TRUNCATE TABLE time_zone; |
[21:43:35] | sorahn: | yes, i can see it spitting out the mysql |
[21:44:10] | bill6502: | and if you do the 2nd half, are you at your MySQL prompt? |
[21:44:20] | sorahn: | no. |
[21:44:58] | mattwj2002: | hey guys does anyone have catci on their mythtv box? |
[21:45:07] | mattwj2002: | *cacti |
[21:45:20] | bill6502: | what did you get? [assuming you didn't type the | ] |
[21:45:28] | mattwj2002: | you know for monitoring cpu memory and disk space usage? |
[21:45:37] | sorahn: | oh wait, do you mean /just/ the second part? |
[21:45:42] | wagnerrp: | i run cacti, yes |
[21:45:49] | wagnerrp: | the part after the pipe |
[21:45:59] | mattwj2002: | wagnerrp: how hard is it to setup? |
[21:46:04] | sorahn: | sorry, yes that drops me off at the prompt |
[21:46:05] | mattwj2002: | I forgot ... it has been a while |
[21:46:10] | wagnerrp: | ever used snmp? |
[21:46:25] | mattwj2002: | yeah I set it up before for snmp devices |
[21:46:29] | wagnerrp: | basic monitoring is real simple |
[21:46:38] | wagnerrp: | if you want to do any custom monitoring, it gets much more difficult |
[21:46:39] | mattwj2002: | okay |
[21:46:49] | sorahn: | bill6502: the whole thing is now outputting this: https://gist.github.com/drbrts/3bf1bdd454ca7d30e90b |
[21:46:58] | sorahn: | i dunno wtf it was doing before. |

[21:47:54] | mattwj2002: | I couldn't remember if I had any problems getting the dang thing installed |

[21:48:55] | sorahn: | at mattwj2002 (btw i don't care about that password, becuase it was generated like 15 minutes ago) |
[21:49:16] | mattwj2002: | oh okay |
[21:49:58] | sorahn: | i was really excited that XBMC was going to work as a myth front end, but then I remembered that I had to set up the myth backend, which i have NEVER gotten to work on OSX. |
[21:50:22] | wagnerrp: | few have tried |
[21:50:33] | mattwj2002: | xbmc isn't bad on a raspberrypi |
[21:50:45] | mattwj2002: | it has some problems but it does work |
[21:51:06] | sorahn: | i have a pi, I'd rather just use the mini. I've got a 5TB thunderbolt drive connected to it, and I can run my whole house from it. |
[21:51:10] | mattwj2002: | for the $35 anyways |
[21:51:21] | wagnerrp: | 5TB? |
[21:51:32] | mattwj2002: | yeah they don't make 5 TB drives |
[21:51:40] | sorahn: | i have a 5tb enclosure |

[21:51:50] | sorahn: | with 5 1tb drives in it |
[21:51:56] | wagnerrp: | ah |
[21:52:11] | mattwj2002: | why not 4 TB X 5 :D |
[21:52:11] | wagnerrp: | hopefully not striped |
[21:52:17] | mattwj2002: | raid 6 |
[21:52:29] | sorahn: | its whatever drobo is doing |
[21:52:43] | sorahn: | "beyondraid" or some shit |
[21:52:54] | sorahn: | I don't care, it works perfectly. |

[21:53:07] | [R]: | propretiaraid |
[21:53:14] | wagnerrp: | it has parity support, but allows the use of parity even when the drives are not of matched size |
[21:53:28] | sorahn: | can i just paypal one of you guys to set this shit up for me? I'm already over it. |
[21:53:40] | wagnerrp: | please watch the language |
[21:53:49] | [R]: | sorahn: sure... i charge $100/minute |
[21:53:55] | sorahn: | you have 30 seconds |
[21:54:03] | [R]: | sorahn: if you can't set it up... you're defintaly not gonig to be able to maintain it |
[21:54:33] | sorahn: | I can't even GET to setting it up. because mysql is trash, and myth refuses to leave it for some reason. |
[21:55:28] | [R]: | so start with a known good base |
[21:55:32] | [R]: | like fedora or ubuntu |
[21:55:51] | sorahn: | i don't have spare computers to do that with |
[21:56:06] | [R]: | huh? |
[21:56:37] | sorahn: | i need the mini, running osx. it runs my house. |
[21:56:46] | sorahn: | i don't have anything to put fedora or ubuntu on |
[21:56:54] | [R]: | well have fun with that |
[21:57:07] | wagnerrp: | mattwj2002: i'd rather pay double, and get something with a halfway decent CPU and a nice chunk of memory |
[21:57:23] | mattwj2002: | what wagnerrp? |

[21:57:59] | sorahn: | whatever, 5 times 5 failres, maybe one day this software will catch up with the 20th century. |

[21:58:08] | bill6502: | sorahn: The Warning messages are no problem, I get a similar set. The: ...at line 38916: Data too long for column... is. Now, how to look at that line. You could pipe it to: sed -n '38910,38920p' |
