[10:05:38] lux3: i've set the ip in mythtv-setup but the frontend says it cannot connect to the db server
[10:10:02] lux3: how do i allow remote connections to the mysql server?
[10:10:04] clever: lux3: is the mysql server setup to allow remote connections?
[10:10:12] lux3: clever: how can i check?
[10:10:25] clever: netstat -anp|grep mysql
[10:10:32] clever: it should report something like tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:3306 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 18696/mysqld
[10:10:58] lux3: tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:3306 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 20657/mysqld
[10:11:18] lux3: yep, so that's not the issue
[10:11:28] clever: yep, remote connections are open, next would be if your name/pw are allowed to connect remotely
[10:12:02] lux3: how can i check?
[10:12:12] clever: thats a bit more tricky, do you have phpmyadmin?
[10:12:23] lux3: nope
[10:12:38] clever: what exactly was the error that mythfrontend gave?
[10:12:42] lux3: archlinux wiki says i need to run "mysql> grant all on *.* to mythtv@'192.168.0.2' identified by 'mythtv';"
[10:13:29] clever: that effectively gives mythtv complete access from that ip
[10:13:46] lux3: so should i run that command?
[10:13:48] clever: at which point, there is no real point in having seperate usernames (root and mythtv)
[10:14:13] lux3: hum ok so i shouldn't run this command?
[10:14:13] clever: i would run one more like this, grant all on mythconverg.* to mythtv@'%' identified by 'mythtv';
[10:14:25] clever: this would give mythtv access to only mythconverg, from any host
[10:14:49] lux3: but "grant all on mythconverg.* to mythtv@'%' identified by 'mythtv';" will work you think?

[15:23:35] sphery: dahlSTROM: if you really want to throw away your existing database and have lots of stuff you need to edit (channel names, numbers, and/or call signs) after a scan or fetch, you can just print a copy of the MythWeb channel editor to PDF and use it to put things back

[15:24:33] sphery: i.e. there's generally no good reason to throw out your database
[15:25:00] sphery: that way you'll have everything like it is now, but on a new system
[15:25:35] sphery: just be careful to use the same IP address and host name (or else it requires a bit more work--which has to be done in a /very/ specific order--to configure the new system)
[15:26:08] dahlSTROM: sphery: I probably need to do a new channel scan anyways and my database is pretty much empty now
[15:26:14] dahlSTROM: I have 2 recordings hehe

[15:27:09] dahlSTROM: my DVB card has problems with one transponder for some reason
[15:27:12] sphery: you can always put the 2 recordings into Video Library in the new system, if you haven't watched them or you want to keep them
[15:27:37] dahlSTROM: alright thanks sphery :)
[15:27:55] sphery: good luck--especially with getting the dvb working on everything
[15:28:14] dahlSTROM: I'm actually surprised that my HD-channels works with my CI+ CAM
[15:28:33] dahlSTROM: but I guess my provider forgot to enable CI+
[15:28:35] dahlSTROM: oh well
[15:28:40] sphery: hehe, good for you :)
[15:28:47] dahlSTROM: yeah! :P
[15:29:17] sphery: CI is reasonable, CI+ is typical "you can only use our equipment for our service" over-controlling approach
[15:29:33] sphery: glad they didn't do the CI+ DRM
[15:29:47] dahlSTROM: yeah, but the best option is still softcam
[15:30:12] dahlSTROM: Do you have any idea if one CA-module would work with multiple tuners?
[15:30:28] dahlSTROM: because I'm able to decode two channels at the same time right now when they're on the same transponder
[15:30:28] sphery: we don't support the use of softcam (and actually ban discussion of it on official channels/lists)
[15:30:38] dahlSTROM: oh sorry
[15:30:48] sphery: not sure about the hardware CAM/CI stuff, though
[15:30:59] sphery: we don't have that here in the US, so I know very little about it
[15:31:11] dahlSTROM: I see
[15:31:33] sphery: in theory, though, if the hardware supports it and the provider allows it, it should work
[15:32:28] sphery: here we have CableCARD "m-cards" which support multiple "tuners" (up to 6)... that's our closest equivalent to CI/CAM
[15:33:10] sphery: however, I don't think the m-cards support multirec (one tuner using multiple channels on a mux)
[15:33:25] dahlSTROM: so how does pay channels work with mythtv?
[15:33:27] sphery: so you just have to use multiple tuners regardless of mux layout
[15:33:33] dahlSTROM: HBO for example, does that work?
[15:34:22] sphery: here in the US, it generally doesn't work directly (even with CableCARD), as it's locked down with CCI flags that say only certified chains (hardware and software) can access it
[15:34:56] sphery: but you can use the HD-PVR and a cable-company set-top box with Component output to get a HDTV capture via the "analog hole"
[15:35:13] sphery: or use an ivtv device for an SDTV capture via analog hole
[15:35:20] dahlSTROM: aha
[15:36:06] nromanowski (nromanowski!~nromanows@173-167-194-14-ip-static.hfc.comcastbusiness.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[15:36:07] nromanowski (nromanowski!~nromanows@173-167-194-14-ip-static.hfc.comcastbusiness.net) has quit (Client Quit)
[15:36:12] sphery: but non-premium channels ("normal" cable channels) may be marked to allow copying--i.e. that's what Comcast does), so those will work with cablecard directly
[15:36:56] sphery: over there, it's all based on whether the provider allows CI/CAM use and, AIUI, whether they use CI+ vs just CI
[15:37:44] dahlSTROM: yeah, seems like it actually works better in the US
[15:37:54] sphery: so, CI/CAM is basically equivalent to cablecard with "copy freely" and CI+ is basically equivalent to cablecard with "copy once" or "copy never" (which MythTV can't ever use)
[15:38:06] sphery: only for comcast
[15:38:26] sphery: Time Warner Cable marks everything "copy once" or "copy never"
[15:38:56] dahlSTROM: what about directv?
[15:39:43] sphery: for all US satellite services (directv and dish), the only option is analog capture
[15:40:03] sphery: meaning sat-co STB + HD-PVR (or ivtv card)
[15:40:15] sphery: for each channel you want to record at a given time
[15:40:38] sphery: (so if you want to be able to record 2 shows concurrently, you need 2 STB's + 2 HD-PVR's)
[15:40:43] dahlSTROM: that sucks
[15:40:47] sphery: yeah
[15:41:30] dahlSTROM: unfortunately, all providers in Europe will switch to CI+
[15:41:34] dahlSTROM: it's just a matter of time
[15:41:35] sphery: and we don't really have any FTA satellite (all that's there is basically shopping and evangelical channels and the same stuff you can get OTA with an antenna/aerial)
[15:42:10] sphery: yeah, hollywood seems to be pressuring them (and probably doing a better job of it overseas than here)
[15:44:09] dahlSTROM: yup, so we're doomed here in Sweden lol

[15:45:51] dahlSTROM: true that

[15:46:42] sphery: but netflix is trying to get everyone to switch to streaming only
[15:47:23] dahlSTROM: I'm refusing to use Netflix as long as they use silverlight
[15:48:42] sphery: hehe, understandable
[15:49:21] sphery: I actually have Amazon Instant Prime, but my gf has Netflix... I don't actually use either on GNU/Linux, though--always use the Xbox 360 or PS3 to watch them
[15:49:38] sphery: even amazon's use of flash is awful for GNU/Linux
[15:50:56] dahlSTROM: I use Hulu with a proxy with the xbmc addon
[15:51:11] sphery: of course, it will all get worse in the future thanks to Netflix, Google, and MS (and their "encrypted media extensions" for HTML)
[15:51:48] FLeiXiuS: Amazon Prime > Netflix
[15:52:04] sphery: which means standard HTML "API" for encrypted content, but 10M handlers for it (which are really nothing more than glorified browser plugins)
[15:52:10] FLeiXiuS: The only superior win for netflix right now is the integration
[15:53:50] dahlSTROM: and the fact that it works outside the US
[15:54:03] dahlSTROM: the library in sweden is terrible though

[22:02:18] Pio: justinh, yeah but hauppage hdpvr is only component in, not hdmi.. i guess you can just get a hdmi – component splitter cable...
[22:04:01] justinh: not quite a splitter cable. You need a converter
[22:04:16] Pio: oh, right
[22:04:28] Pio: like the hd fury

[22:27:07] dekarl: Pio: try something bigger like a wandboard quad instead of the pi for a backend.
[22:27:29] Pio: yeah.. i was really only thinking pi because theres a larger community around it so its easy to find packages
[22:27:59] dekarl: well, for devices that run Ubunutu there is also a large community :D
[22:31:42] Pio: yeah i get lost in the varieties of arm
[22:34:23] Pio: and if i just want to use it as a backend, probably doesnt need *too* much speed
[22:39:23] kormoc: Pio, no, it's pretty bad. The backend requires a decently snappy database and the pi just doesn't provide that
[22:39:41] kormoc: the IO is horrible and the ram is slow
[22:40:14] Pio: ok
[22:40:57] Pio: it'd be easy to just use a real computer but i like to hibernate my systems at night to save power.. the way the electric rates are here, wandboard would pay for itself pretty quickly in power savings
[22:41:36] dahlSTROM: Pio: raspberry pi won't work as it does not support deinterlacing afaik
[22:41:57] Pio: well im talking backend only
[22:42:09] dahlSTROM: oh
[22:42:19] dahlSTROM: I doubt that'll work :P
[22:42:26] Pio: yah
[22:42:43] Pio: up until a couple months ago i was using an old p4 for a backend but it was just SD, now im aspiring to do HD
[22:43:22] dahlSTROM: I'm using amd e35 for backend and frontend
[22:43:24] dahlSTROM: works fine
[22:43:29] dahlSTROM: I use xbmc as frontend though

[22:44:49] kormoc: Pio, so on a semi-modem computer, ram timing is multiple gigabytes per second. For example, one I have at home tests to 6834.08 MB/sec, the pi I have at home tests at 163.76 MB/sec. With a normal hard drive, you can pull ~100 to ~150 IOPS, but with the pi, with a expensive class 10 SD card, I get only ~18 IOPS. For a DB, that's *slow*
[22:45:57] Pio: could run the mysql datadir on the external usb drive i'd have to have on there anyway to store recordings..
[22:46:12] Pio: but yeah point taken
[22:46:27] kormoc: I didn't notice that much speed benefit with a usb2 jump drive, but I don't have numbers
[22:47:09] kormoc: Don't get me wrong, the Pi is awesome, just not at DBs and backend stuff :)
[22:48:02] Pio: yeah im using one now as a print server / asterisk box / jabber server.. perfect for that kind of stuff
