[19:37:04] wagnerrp: ^Rabbit^: ATI tuners are typically not supported on Linux, so that would be a good first step
[19:38:48] wagnerrp: a 2GHz C2D will run circles around every netburst chip ever produced
[19:39:25] wagnerrp: but for a backend, performance really doesn't matter, so long as you have enough to run the scheduler
[19:39:35] wagnerrp: either will be fine in that regard
[19:40:57] ^Rabbit^: The dv6000t is a Core2Duo T5600. How is that versus the Pentium D (which I am hoping to eventually upgrade to a Core iSeries, probably 8GB RAM)?
[19:54:24] wagnerrp: 1.83GHz, still considerably more powerful
[19:54:54] wagnerrp: 160GB is decent for a boot/database disk
[19:55:05] wagnerrp: although i would question the lifetime left in a disk that old
[19:55:24] wagnerrp: if you were to use the laptop, you would still need a separate disk for recordings
[19:55:33] wagnerrp: and you would likely need a different tuner
[19:55:51] wagnerrp: i'm not certain on that one
[19:56:18] ^Rabbit^: Would the hyperthreading on a Core i7 be very beneficial? The 160GB HDD is in the Pentium D 920 system, not the HP notebook.
[19:57:03] wagnerrp: hyperthreading is better if you have a bunch of lightweight tasks
[19:57:12] wagnerrp: as it will reuse those otherwise wasted computational resources
[19:57:56] wagnerrp: the two things the backend does is the scheduler (which is single threaded), and batch video processing (which tends to be sufficiently well optimized that hyperthreading doesn't do much)
[19:58:22] ^Rabbit^: I am considering updating the 160GB to a 2TB HDD (partitioned with 60/920/rest of capacity).
[19:58:46] wagnerrp: no. you simply don't want your database and recordings on the same disk
[19:59:28] ^Rabbit^: Same physical disk? What about a second-generation i5 CPU?
[19:59:47] wagnerrp: same physical disk, meaning partitioning makes no difference
[20:00:06] wagnerrp: it's still a single shared head that has to keep seeking around for all those writes
[20:01:29] ^Rabbit^: What about a partitioned, 2TB HDD since that system (Pentium D 920 currently) also has a 1TB HDD?
[20:01:45] wagnerrp: as i said, partitioning makes no difference
[20:02:03] wagnerrp: logical partitioning does not resolve the fact that all those partitions are still being accessed by that single read head
[20:02:19] wagnerrp: and that single read head takes 10–15ms to reposition on every write
[20:02:43] wagnerrp: and every write to the filesystem actually takes a minimum of 3–4 writes to the platter, since you have to account for filesystem metadata
[20:03:24] wagnerrp: when you have each recording flushing once per second, and you potentially have multiple recordings going simultaneously, and on top of that you have the database recording the seek table and other data
[20:03:36] wagnerrp: it can all quickly become too much for one physical disk to handle
[20:03:54] wagnerrp: it's easier to just avoid the whole mess and make sure your recordings and database are not being performed on the same physical disk
[20:04:13] ^Rabbit^: It would be two separate HDDs (1TB and 2TB respectively). Currently, I have this as a dual-boot system (Windows XP SP3/Windows 8 ). XP is on the smaller capacity disk, but I will probably get rid of that OS once security updates are no longer made available next year).
[20:06:16] [R] ([R]!~rbox@unaffiliated/rbox) has quit (Quit: Leaving)
[20:14:32] wagnerrp: but what good would that 2TB disk be if it's just going to hold your OS and database?
[20:14:45] wagnerrp: you're going to be wasting 99% of that storage
[20:15:00] wagnerrp: as for dual booting, that's simply a bad idea
[20:15:06] wagnerrp: mythtv expects dedicated hardware
[20:15:30] wagnerrp: it expects to always be online, or have control over when it shuts down and boots, so it is always available to record when it wants to record
[20:15:37] ^Rabbit^: OS on 2TB, database on separate 1TB....
[20:16:04] wagnerrp: so then you're going to have the 1TB disk store nothing but a few hundred megabytes of data
[20:17:04] ^Rabbit^: It is currently used for WMC recording. Could it be used for recording regardless of OS?
[20:18:19] wagnerrp: now you're opening a whole new can of worms by mixing incompatible filesystems
[20:18:58] wagnerrp: linux _can_ access NTFS volumes, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea to do so for production purposes
[20:20:02] ^Rabbit^: Actually, the 1TB is partitioned (40GB for Windows 8/remainder for WMC recording). What about BOTH OSs being put on CURRENT 1TB with partition of 2TB being used for linux database)?
[20:20:41] wagnerrp: and then your recordings being done on the 1TB drive?
[20:20:50] wagnerrp: again, you're wasting the whole 2TB disk by doing that
[20:21:23] ^Rabbit^: Linux recording on 2TB, WMC recording on 1TB partition.
[20:22:16] ^Rabbit^: Actually Linux recording would beon a PARTITON of the 2TB.
[20:23:13] williammanda: wagnerrp, what I meant by grabbing focus was.....when mythtv is started it captures the whole screen...you can't access the desktop like with other programs...you need to use alt-tab (if you have another program running)....I was looking to access the desktop like I normally do

[22:36:42] wagnerrp: williammanda: there are options to control the size of mythtv's window, and to allow the window manager to draw a boarder around it
[22:36:52] wagnerrp: --geometry and --windowed
[22:37:22] wagnerrp: you can control that directly using those command line options, or go into mythfrontend and the appearances settings
[22:40:00] williammanda: I foundthe mythfrontend appearance option
[22:40:47] williammanda: weird thing was that I had to make the screen res 1920*1079 (not 1080) to make it work
[22:51:08] wagnerrp: make what work?

[23:31:15] williammanda: with Use with gui size for tv playback checked and the width 1920 and height 1080.....I can't get to the desktop....with the width at 1079...I can get to the desktop...other words mythtv acts like a regular window
[23:32:16] wagnerrp: no, mythtv acts like a regular window if you use the --windowed parameter, or matching option in the frontend configuration, and allow the window manager to draw a box around it
[23:34:32] williammanda: let me absorb what your saying.....1st if I launch mythfrontend with --windowed...mythtv acts like a regular window
[23:34:44] williammanda: right?
[23:35:06] wagnerrp: meaning the window manager wraps it in a box, and it behaves like any other window
[23:35:32] wagnerrp: the "box" being the title bar and close/minimize buttons
[23:37:46] williammanda: so is the way I have it working now ....ok? or is there something wrong/I need to be concerned about?
[23:38:10] wagnerrp: i don't know what you're trying to do
[23:38:23] williammanda: let me start over......
[23:39:30] williammanda: when mythfrontend is launched.....I want it to act like a regular window but not have the border or title bar...other word be borderless....
[23:40:11] williammanda: I can access the desktop
[23:40:17] wagnerrp: then that is the default behavior
[23:40:48] wagnerrp: however i don't understand. if you want to access the desktop, why would you want it to be borderless?
[23:41:19] williammanda: hold on....
[23:41:43] williammanda: default behavior = is borderless and no desktop access like a regular window
[23:41:49] williammanda: aggreed?
[23:42:24] wagnerrp: no, the default behavior is borderless and full screen
[23:42:29] wagnerrp: it does not restrict desktop access
[23:42:50] wagnerrp: nothing prevents your window manager from pushing mythtv behind something else
[23:43:13] wagnerrp: but trying to use your desktop with a borderless application is clumsy at best
[23:43:39] williammanda: ok...i'm confused
[23:44:03] williammanda: let me tell you where from what you stated
[23:44:29] williammanda: 1. no, the default behavior is borderless and full screen
[23:44:29] williammanda: it does not restrict desktop access.....
[23:45:04] williammanda: on every installation for the past few years ...your statement is different than what I have
[23:46:00] wagnerrp: you should not have any problems alt-tabbing to another application
[23:46:09] wagnerrp: inability to do so is on your window manager, not mythtv
[23:46:40] williammanda: in that ....mythtv once launched...does restrict normal desktop access....meaning....if I launch a program and it is full screen I can still access the desktop with the mouse
[23:47:16] williammanda: understand?
[23:47:35] wagnerrp: mythtv hides the mouse when it is within its own borders, but that does not mean the mouse is disabled
[23:47:57] williammanda: I have the mouse enabled in mythtv

[23:48:10] wagnerrp: if you move a window over top mythtv, or run mythtv at something less than full screen, the mouse cursor will be visible so long as it is not within mythtv's bounds
[23:48:49] williammanda: there is an option in mythtv to enable the mouse
[23:48:57] wagnerrp: correct
[23:49:01] williammanda: while mythtv is full screen
[23:49:06] wagnerrp: yes
[23:49:34] wagnerrp: but it applies at all times, whether mythtv is full screen or shrunk, whether mythtv is being rendered with or without a border
[23:50:05] williammanda: k....hold on lets not get off topic about the mouse
[23:50:49] williammanda: unless it applies to how I have mythtv working at present

[23:51:19] wagnerrp: before we get any further, why not just run two X servers, and switch between them?
[23:51:48] williammanda: I don't know ....why would I want to do that?
[23:51:54] wagnerrp: login once and run X for mythtv, login a second time for standard desktop usage
[23:52:20] wagnerrp: just flip between their independent virtual terminals as needed
[23:52:57] williammanda: so how would I flip bewtween them?
[23:53:20] wagnerrp: when you're sitting at the terminal, it's alt-fN
[23:53:30] wagnerrp: usually in X, it remaps that to ctrl-alt-fN
[23:53:45] williammanda: k
[23:53:54] wagnerrp: most distros that automatically span X sessions put the first at terminal 7
[23:54:18] wagnerrp: N being the terminal number you want to access
[23:54:32] williammanda: let me tell what I have currently.......
[23:57:46] williammanda: I have mythtv working on ubuntu but with a cairo dock session......this allows me to launch mythtv while keeping desktop access with a mouse and not having to use the keyboard ie alt-tab ......basically mythtv is acting like a regular windowed program without the border/title bar
[23:59:36] wagnerrp: so basically, you're using something funky and mythtv is not correctly interpreting the proper size of "full screen" that you want
