[03:47:33] dashs: That will take a while
[03:47:37] wagnerrp: why?
[03:49:08] wagnerrp: for digital tuners, mythtv makes 'virtual tuners', allowing multiple simultaneous recordings to be made on a single tuner so long as both channels are on the same multiplex
[03:49:16] wagnerrp: is it possible this is what you're seeing?

[13:01:30] niobos: Hi all, I'm looking for any recent advice on known-to-work-well hardware
[13:02:01] niobos: I've scanned the mythtv-users mailinglist from January 2013 till now
[13:02:06] niobos: but didn't find anything useful
[13:02:45] niobos: (I must admit, I haven't searched very hard; I've only searched the subject lines for "hardware")
[13:03:14] niobos: but one post mentioned to drop by here and bug people with this question
[13:03:20] niobos: probably for the zillionth time
[13:03:42] niobos: From what I've learned till now
[13:03:57] niobos: I'm looking for an nVidia videocard-chipset to get VDPAU support
[13:04:42] niobos: and a "fast enough" CPU; but given current CPU speeds, anything should do (no ARM/ATOM-based stuff)
[13:05:36] niobos: I'm looking for a combined frontend/backend, which will get DVB-based input. So either with 3+ PCIe slots or 3+ USB ports
[13:06:11] niobos: preferably passively cooled, although I doubt that will be possible; but in any case, as quiet as possible
[13:07:11] niobos: And to push my luck: also low on power consumption, especially in idle/off/standby
[13:07:45] niobos: Cheap is a plus, but I think that that option has come and gone when I mentioned my previous requirements/wihses
[13:13:56] sphery: hR13: if you have crashed MySQL tables or corrupt MySQL data files, mysqldump won't work--it fails fast as soon as it hits the first crashed table.
[13:15:05] sphery: hR13: The best fix for your issue is to take the most-recent pre-crash backup and restore it completely (not just one or 2 tables--they're all linked together, so you'll have data integrity issues if you just pick and choose which tables to restore on top of the existing database, for example, restoring only the crashed tables)
[13:15:19] sphery: hR13: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Database_Backup_an . . . ing_database is the proper procedure
[13:16:29] sphery: hR13: once you do, any new recordings you've made since the backup won't be in Watch Recordings, so you can find them with http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Find_orphans.py and move them to Video Library, where you can watch them (and feel free to move other episodes of the same show to Video Library--as it's actually a better place for storing large libraries of content)
[13:17:02] hR13: sphery, thanks. Im guessing that trying "mysqlcheck -ao --auto-repair -u<yourdatabase user> -p<userpassword> mythconverg" will not do it?
[13:17:14] sphery: hR13: Other option is to use optimize_mythdb.pl to see if MySQL can repair the data file. However, based on the particular error you're getting, it sounds like /major/ corruption of the data file, so that's unlikely to work
[13:17:24] sphery: which means you'd have to do mysqlcheck with the right options
[13:17:42] sphery: and it's likely to do bad things--specifically, you may well lose all data from inside the corrupted tables
[13:18:06] sphery: or even some rows within the table (which may actually be harder to spot as a problem)
[13:18:49] sphery: hR13: also, FWIW, I highly recommend using http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Database_Backup_and_Restore to create the database backups for MythTV as the command you gave, above, would result in a backup that corrupts your schema on restore
[13:19:20] hR13: ohh, ok thanks for all the help sphery
[13:19:22] sphery: the backup script we provide does it properly--making sure your backup has all the information required to restore a fully-functional database
[13:19:23] hR13: damn that thunder....
[13:19:27] sphery: hehe, yeah
[13:19:33] sphery: were you doing regular backups before?
[13:20:16] hR13: nopp :-(
[13:20:52] sphery: if not, you can also do things the hard way... hammer the database with mysqlcheck (and possibly some of its dangerous options that may be required to "fix" your database, but will almost definitely corrupt data--options like --use-frm ) until you get the database uncorrupted
[13:21:26] sphery: then, you'll have corrupt data, so you can fix (most of) that by throwing away all non-recreatable data and re-creating everything else
[13:22:36] sphery: you do that by doing a complete backup ( http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Database_Backup_and_Restore ), followed by a partial restore ( http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Database_Backup_an . . . _of_a_backup ), then reconfigure /everything/ (run mythtv-setup and set up capture cards, video sources, input connections, channels, storage directories, etc.), then run mythbackend, then run mythfrontend and configure all its settings
[13:23:22] sphery: and, in your case, it's possible you may lose some or all of your recording data, in which case you'll need to use http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Find_orphans.py to find the orphaned video files and move them to Video Library
[13:24:06] sphery: (and, while doing so, watch enough to figure out which show it is--and, if you can, which episode--and rename the file so that metadata download will work – http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/MythVideo_File_Parsing )
[13:24:59] hR13: sounds like I have some work infront of me
[13:26:13] sphery: and, of course, come up with a nice backup procedure for your database--where you back up the database on master backend startup or shutdown or have a cron job that does it (but be careful with doing backups while MythTV is running because you could get data integrity issues due to changes occuring on one table after you've backed up an "older version" of a linked table, not to mention I/O and/or database locking issues that cause ...
[13:26:19] sphery: ... problems for recordings or MythTV--even deadlocks)
[13:26:25] sphery: yeah  :(
[13:26:27] sphery: good luck

[13:26:56] hR13: Thanks again for all the help sphery :-)
[13:28:17] sphery: niobos: nvidia video card that supports VDPAU is /definitely/ the best idea for good video on GNU/Linux these days, and, yeah, I'd recommend a nice Core 2 Duo or Core i or AMD Athlon II X2 or *some* AMD A-series processors for a MythTV system
[13:28:37] sphery: niobos: I also agree that low-power is a plus for it
[13:29:46] sphery: niobos: because of that, I choose dual-core systems (higher core frequency for a given power envelope--where single-thread performance is often important in video decoding). I recently started looking at the AMD A-series chips because any before Trinity are /not/ useful for MythTV (i.e. don't get a Llano)
[13:31:05] niobos: sphery: any specific hardware combo that you know works?
[13:31:23] sphery: niobos: my systems are currently AMD Athlon II X2 240, 250, and 260 (I have 3 computers for my MythTV system)--all 65W TDP ones. However, I just got an AMD A-series Trinity chip (for someone else's computer) and it seems it would be very nice for a low-power MythTV system.
[13:31:37] niobos: sphery: you choose dual-core instead of quad-core, I assume; not vs single-core?
[13:32:08] sphery: basically any of the trinity chips at http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp . . . ;srchInDesc=
[13:33:00] sphery: even the A10–5700 (quad core) should be fine at 3.4GHz--and since its GPU is on die, it's actually lower power consumption than a 65W Athlon II X2
[13:33:09] sphery: yeah, dual core minimum
[13:34:37] sphery: I usually get dual core since I don't need tri-/quad-/higher-core for MythTV and they're usually slighly slower core frequency, anyway, and more expensive than dual core
[13:35:35] niobos: and concerning motherboard/case?
[13:35:46] niobos: particular details to look out for?
[13:36:16] sphery: more cores isn't bad if you're doing a lot of post-processing jobs (like transcoding--which, IMHO, is a waste of electricity) or trying to use something like the "Stream garbage quality versions of your high-bitrate, high-resolution records to some garbage device that can't handle real video and/or across a garbage network connection with too-slow an uplink", er, I guess that's called "HTTP Live Streaming" (HLS)
[13:36:18] niobos: A10–5700: GPU on die, but no VDPAU in that case (since that needs nvidia)
[13:36:27] sphery: right
[13:36:40] sphery: I'd get the A-series and plug in a PCIe nvidia card
[13:37:03] niobos: which will up the power consumption a bit, so I'm better of getting a CPU without on-die GPU
[13:37:04] sphery: and disable the on-CPU-package GPU
[13:37:20] niobos: yeah, disabling probably works just as well
[13:37:25] sphery: no, if you disable the on-cpu gpu, it gates it for almost 0 power usage
[13:38:11] sphery: so it means your 65W cpu/gpu never gets close to 65W (granted with APUs they measure the TDP differently, but I have to say the power consumption on those A-series trinity chips is nice)
[13:38:22] niobos: btw: I like how you describe HLS/transcoding...
[13:38:26] sphery: but you could do an Athlon II X2 or a Core i
[13:39:02] niobos: I don't really know why, but I'm a bit more fan of Intel's chips...
[13:39:05] sphery: hehe, I don't understand why so many people like the idea of streaming their HDTV at garbage quality (often to a tiny device where you can barely see the screen--so you "listen" to TV rather than watching it)
[13:39:25] sphery: if you like Intel's chips, they have some very nice ones
[13:39:37] sphery: you can get a Core i3 and build a system that idles at about 25W
[13:39:51] sphery: actually idles at lower power usage than most Atom systems
[13:40:01] niobos: *system* that idles at 25W? i.e. including disk & stuff?
[13:40:28] sphery: (where Atom systems idle at nearly the same power usage as they take at full load because they're not power-efficient chips--just power constrained)
[13:40:51] sphery: well, including a disk... if you do a bunch of disks, that will add to it
[13:41:00] niobos: I have a home server which is Atom-based, and indeed, it's ~23W idle, 26W full load
[13:41:02] sphery: but most modern HDDs idle at about 1–2W
[13:41:30] niobos: what specs should I look for in motherboards?
[13:41:33] sphery: as far as which nvidia card to get, I'll leave that to someone who knows them better
[13:41:34] niobos: anything in particular?
[13:41:49] sphery: as far as mobo, I pick mine based on # and type of slots and what I expect to put in it
[13:42:20] niobos: I have 2 ways to go: either get my tuners as PCIe, or as USB
[13:42:22] sphery: I won't ever do USB-based capture devices (as USB isn't sufficiently high-reliability for something like that, IMHO), so I often have to find one with lots of PCIe and/or PCI
[13:42:58] sphery: some users do USB and don't have a lot of problems, but that's /very/ much dependent on the USB chipset in use and how well supported it is in Linux
[13:43:01] niobos: I've build a MythTV with PCI back in the 0.19-days
[13:43:14] niobos: so I know that that works reliably
[13:43:27] sphery: and, really, if you're using USB2 or below, it's a polling type bus, which is extremely inefficient, resulting in greater power and cpu usage
[13:43:38] sphery: and I don't know of any USB3 devices out there
[13:43:40] niobos: I've been reading a lot of good on USB-based tuners, but now that I think of it, none of these actually tested reliablity
[13:43:53] sphery: and Linux USB3 support is still way too young for my tastes
[13:44:05] niobos: hmm, "polling type bus", I'm learning a lot here
[13:44:18] niobos: (I know what polling means, I just didn't realize USB was polling)
[13:44:41] sphery: yeah, that's one of the real benefits of usb3--it becomes a proper bus
[13:45:02] niobos: (with all security-concerns thereof, but that's a different discussion)
[13:45:21] sphery: but then Intel got bored and decided to do Thunderbolt--since they can't control USB, anymore--so we'll see what happens with USB3 vs "other"
[13:45:43] niobos: so I've narrowed my options to: Intel i3 CPU, nVidia PCIe card, PCI(e) based DVB-tuners, whatever MoBo that supports that combo
[13:45:56] sphery: that sounds like it will make a great system
[13:46:13] niobos: As I understand it, Thunderbolt is very similar to PCIe
[13:46:48] sphery: Oh, and btw, I'm impressed you're doing MythTV properly... Far too many people take garbage systems (literally ones that someone's getting rid of) and try to install MythTV and expect it to be great, but they're asking too much of the hardware they give it and they blame MythTV.
[13:47:19] sphery: But since MythTV is a high-end, luxury DVR, you really need to have an other-than-low-end PC for it.
[13:47:32] sphery: yeah, T-bolt /and/ USB3 are very similar to PCIe
[13:48:00] hR13: sphery, I found a backup from Sunday :-) thanks mythbuntu developers. now lets hope the backup works ....
[13:48:02] sphery: T-bolt just went a different approach (and was spec'ed out after USB3) to get better throughput
[13:48:14] sphery: hR13: nice... that is definitely the best solution
[13:48:21] sphery: and you won't have that much video to identify
[13:49:01] sphery: anyway, good luck to both of you... I think you're on the right track. Gotta get some work done.

[22:03:20] rumblebumble: just wanted some pointers, i have mythmusic setup. I can play music on other myth boxes but I can not play music overupnp or mythweb. It just seems to time out. Originally I though it was a permissions issue but that does not seem to be the problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (fyi also does not stream over upnp)
