[02:25:40] Korny: Well figured out my video corruption issues
[02:25:56] Korny: Dlink Green switches do not like 100 ft runs of a cat 6 :/
[02:32:35] jamesd_: strange.. the spec says it should support 100meters 328 feet
[02:34:55] Korny: It says so
[02:35:22] Korny: But I just put a trend net switch in its place, 100mbit switch, all my video corruption issues go away :/
[02:35:38] Korny: and thats serving 2 HD Homeruns
[02:36:32] Korny: So it shouldn't ahve been a bandwidth issues because even 4 tuners going at once wouldn't max out a 100mbit switch and shouldn't even touch a 1 gigabit switch
[02:36:33] jamesd_: how was the hd homerun setup, i have one being delivered on wedesday
[02:36:41] Korny: easy peasy
[02:36:55] Korny: Prime or OTA?
[02:36:56] jamesd_: have you tried running a backend in vmware esxi?
[02:37:45] Korny: No, but its all network based so as long as your VM machine has its own IP you should be golden
[02:38:57] Korny: When I build my next house I'm going to put http://www.amazon.com/TRENDnet-Unmanaged-GREE . . . f=pd_sim_e_6 in it
[02:39:47] sheppard: wow
[02:39:53] sheppard: my srw-2024p is still worth $500 supposedly
[02:40:12] sheppard: or not
[02:40:17] sheppard: dam you amazon
[02:40:50] Korny: lol, for home use I don't think I need a managed switch
[02:42:21] Korny: I'm still annoyed with my DLink I have a 5 port and 8 port, My guess is their power limiting feature is messing my run up
[02:42:31] jamesd_: i got a web managed dell 16 port gigabit... and still end up with smaller switches in certain rooms... my office/dining room has 8 ports, and my son's room has an 8 port switch and master bedroom has the wifi router and 4 more ports.
[02:44:06] Korny: I just picked up a new wifi router actually, I'm leary about Buffalo products but it runs dd-wrt so we will see
[02:44:36] jamesd_: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001BXNKZ2/r . . . F8&psc=1 my favorite small gigabit switch.
[02:44:38] Korny: I'm retiring my linksys dd-wrt G router
[02:45:24] wagnerrp: you know, trendnet just seems like even shadier gear than my netgear
[02:45:31] jamesd_: i retired my dlink 655 with http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006QB1RPY/r . . . F8&psc=1
[02:45:43] wagnerrp: srw-2024p... linksys?
[02:46:06] wagnerrp: cisco, same thing
[02:46:15] Korny: I went with http://www.amazon.com/BUFFALO-AirStation-High . . . ffalo+router
[02:46:15] sheppard: yes
[02:46:26] wagnerrp: yeah, those PoE switches aren't cheap
[02:46:45] sheppard: wagnerrp: it works well except for the fact that webview breaks after the switch has been up for 4+ months
[02:46:57] jamesd_: i wanted a 5ghz switch, of course it was a mistake my laptop doesn't support 5ghz.
[02:47:17] ** wagnerrp shudders at the thought of mythbackend in a VM **
[02:48:03] jamesd_: its either a vm or it can be a combo frontend/backend in a sun ultra 20 dual core 2.4ghz opteron and 4GB of memory.
[02:48:07] sheppard: next weekend I'm putting myth in a vm
[02:48:18] Korny: jamesd_, thats a bit overkill lol
[02:48:20] wagnerrp: why not just run it and other applications on a box, without VMs?
[02:48:24] sheppard: and usb passthrough for my capture card
[02:48:40] wagnerrp: and VM's go downhill fast when you try to do any kind of hardware access
[02:48:41] Korny: I'm really liking my i3 setup frontend/backend
[02:48:59] Korny: I probably coudl have gotten away with a pentium setup
[02:49:21] jamesd_: wagnerrp, the esxi box is up and running and its a hp ml350 g6 e5606 cpu quad cores and 52GB of memory.. tuner is hd homerun dual tuner box

[02:50:01] wagnerrp: but why run a vm?
[02:50:08] Korny: I finally got peak wattage out of my machine wagnerrp, 77 watts while watching 1080i and recording 4 TV shows and serving 3 other machines
[02:50:27] Korny: and flagging 4 shows
[02:50:29] jamesd_: wagnerrp, its more efficent than the opteron upstairs...
[02:50:45] wagnerrp: and less efficient than simply running everything on a single linux host
[02:51:22] jamesd_: i get to put vmware on my resume.. and i got to shut down 3 other boxes by moving everything to vmware.
[02:52:47] jamesd_: i have thin clients that run better in solaris, and i can play with any os or application i want on vmware it really rocks
[02:53:41] wagnerrp: you could do the same thing with a normal VM, sitting on top of a linux host that runs all your servers
[02:54:50] wagnerrp: it just disturbs me all the people on the mailing list running VMs for reasons that could be fulfilled with nothing more than chroot, and then complaining about all the hardware access troubles that come as a result
[02:55:01] jamesd_: yes, but its not the same as using vmware, its several steps above anything else out there and i needed vmware on my resume, it was a week spot...
[02:57:30] jamesd_: i haven't had any hardware access problems i don't do pass-through... everything is nfs mounted or is handled by vmware...

[02:58:20] jamesd_: i got a network attached tuner, i had kworld cards but were a pain even without vmware so decided to get the hdhomerun and go virtual.
[02:58:47] Korny: I love my HD homeruns, haven't had to touch them in months

[03:07:11] Korny: wagnerrp, whats your beef with Trendnet?
[03:07:33] Korny: Least they aren't like Netgear and trying to sell cheap crap for an over inflated price, instead they sell cheap crap for cheap
[03:07:42] wagnerrp: heh
[03:08:34] wagnerrp: only reason i even consider netgear crap is the lifetime warranty (and i've used it on more than one occasion)
[03:09:23] wagnerrp: i completely agree it is crap... :)

[03:11:25] Korny: Eversince linksys and netgear became one netgear became trash, I was hoping instead linksys would improve :/
[03:11:58] wagnerrp: cisco spun linksys back off?
[03:12:11] Korny: OH wiat
[03:12:15] Korny: You're right
[03:12:23] Korny: Lack of sleep :/
[03:12:39] Korny: 15 hours in the last 96
[03:12:41] Korny: :/
[03:13:12] Narr0wm1nd: I got a question about cpu load. I just got 0.26 installed on a fedora server with an AMD A10–5800K. I seem to get +~20% cpu load for every frontend that connects. Isn't that too high?
[03:13:37] Korny: on the backend?
[03:13:40] Narr0wm1nd: ya the backend
[03:13:52] wagnerrp: it's certainly odd
[03:13:54] Korny: is it 20% of a core or 20% total?
[03:14:07] Narr0wm1nd: its single threaded so a core
[03:14:11] Korny: oh
[03:14:24] Korny: I just need to goto sleep, to bad I have 9 mor ehours of work :/
[03:16:06] Narr0wm1nd: earlier I had one openelec client stuttering badly, I checked the server and mythbackend was pegged at like 110%, after a restart.. Its was back down to %10.. but with each frontened that connects .. it really starts to jump up.. its pulling 50% cpu load now with only two boxes connected
[03:16:17] Korny: strange
[03:16:25] Korny: oh wait
[03:16:28] wagnerrp: there should be no significant change per frontend
[03:16:44] Korny: wagnerrp, there was/is a bug with XBMC
[03:16:51] wagnerrp: you're just talking about a frontend sitting idle, right?
[03:16:59] Korny: He's not using mythtv client
[03:17:09] wagnerrp: well then all bets are off
[03:17:17] Korny: Narr0wm1nd, is it mysql thats pegging your proccessor
[03:17:19] wagnerrp: it still shouldn't be using much cpu
[03:17:33] Korny: thats what happened when I used openele
[03:17:34] Korny: c
[03:17:39] wagnerrp: but there's nothing to say openelec isn't needlessly pegging the backend over mythproto
[03:18:17] Narr0wm1nd: no mysqld isnt eve in top
[03:18:19] wagnerrp: the top end Fusion chips are still only dual core?
[03:18:38] Korny: quassi quad core :P
[03:19:22] wagnerrp: two cores, four threads
[03:19:31] Narr0wm1nd: huh, I connectedone more xbmc windows client .. and now I can see mythbackend went from 50% to 75% cpu
[03:19:34] wagnerrp: they're just more meaningful threads than when intel claims it
[03:19:51] wagnerrp: Narr0wm1nd: could you connect using mythfrontend and see what happens?
[03:20:16] Narr0wm1nd: Im running mythfrontend on the server..
[03:20:35] Narr0wm1nd: it seems to act just like xbmc.. adds 20% load to mythbackend
[03:20:52] wagnerrp: what version is this?
[03:20:57] wagnerrp: oh, 0.26
[03:21:10] wagnerrp: check your logs, see if they're flooding some error
[03:21:34] Narr0wm1nd: mythtv.x86_64 0.26.0–7.fc18 @rpmfusion-free-updates
[03:21:53] Narr0wm1nd: I have checked the logs.. there isnt much.
[03:22:42] Narr0wm1nd: there was some permissions stuff with the channel icons being saved in /root/.mythtv but I fixed up those persimssions to give mythtv access and there isnt any other repeated messages
[03:23:10] wagnerrp: yeah.... you're not supposed to run mythtv-setup as root
[03:23:17] wagnerrp: you're supposed to run it as the user that runs mythbackend
[03:23:32] Korny: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=149552
[03:23:41] Korny: No solution, but looks like the same issue
[03:23:42] wagnerrp: although to be fair, those files should be getting stored in a relative storage group path, and not absolutely
[03:24:38] Narr0wm1nd: ya.. I didnt see 'su mythtv' in the install notes
[03:25:44] Narr0wm1nd: plus the rpm seems to install the myth user, but Ithink the shell or something is /nologin .. I had trouble su'ing to myhtv to rerun mythtv
[03:26:34] Narr0wm1nd: I read that xmbc thread already.. the only odd thing is I see the same 20% cpu hit with mythfrontend on the server
[03:27:07] wagnerrp: that specific amount makes it sound like a thread is getting caught in some strange busy loop
[03:27:22] Narr0wm1nd: I agree
[03:28:27] Narr0wm1nd: ya the rpms added mythtv:x:991:989:mythbackend user:/var/lib/mythtv:/sbin/nologin
[03:28:43] Narr0wm1nd: how do they expect you to run myth-setup as the user?
[03:29:25] wagnerrp: don't as me. we don't do the packages
[03:29:46] Korny: I'm liking the look of the theme I'm using for my front end. After teaching the wife to use filters for non watched things its workign peachy
[03:30:06] Narr0wm1nd: I get the feelings no one does, either build from scratch or use a preinstalled live image
[03:30:31] wagnerrp: mythtv doesn't really do live images
[03:30:40] wagnerrp: mythbuntu is about as close as you get to one of those
[03:30:57] Korny: I've put a myth backend on a ubuntu install vs mythbuntu using packages sorta lol
[03:31:04] wagnerrp: since you need recording space and a database, a live image wouldn't be of much use to mythtv anyway
[03:31:15] wagnerrp: at most, you could get a dedicated frontend out of one
[03:37:57] Korny: How hard is it to setup remote boot on frontends?
[03:38:01] Korny: I'm considering it
[03:38:10] Korny: err Network boot
[03:38:25] wagnerrp: i don't know if they still do it, but ubuntu used to make it fairly painless using ltsp
[03:39:17] Korny: I know my atom boxes can't network boot so I never looked that closely into it
[03:43:18] Narr0wm1nd: pxe boot, it shouldn't be hard.. I have done it for other things.. mostly its just configuring the dhcp server to return the boot image
[03:44:43] Narr0wm1nd: that said said I picked up a 32gb ssd for my zotac they are cheap enough that it isnt worth setting up pxe boot
[03:46:25] Korny: my atom boxes just have used laptop drives lol
[03:46:32] Korny: bought em at microcenter fro 10 bucks a piece
[03:46:37] Korny: 40 gig
[03:46:39] wagnerrp: i initially did PXE because i was cheap
[03:46:47] wagnerrp: now i do it because it's easier to keep all the boxes updated
[03:47:00] Narr0wm1nd: if they all share the same image
[03:47:10] wagnerrp: more or less
[03:47:17] wagnerrp: they're all running cloned copies of the same image
[03:47:26] Narr0wm1nd: openelec made updating easy.. just copy the new kernel and system into an smb share and reboot
[03:47:48] Korny: Narr0wm1nd, I like openelec except for the pvr browser
[03:48:25] Narr0wm1nd: the guide? stored recordings?
[03:48:51] Narr0wm1nd: it really isnt a full solution until xbmc figures out how to schedule more then one off recordings
[03:48:55] Korny: When I was playign wtih it, it was just super slow
[03:49:23] Narr0wm1nd: I got a zotac id41, istn slow at all
[03:49:43] wagnerrp: well... yeah it is
[03:49:53] Korny: Compared to the mythtv frontend for me it was super slow
[03:50:06] wagnerrp: it's only useful if you're using content that can be played with VDPAU
[03:50:39] Korny: Most content can, espically with the newer cards
[03:51:07] Korny: ion2 + can accelerate h264 and divx/xvid
[03:51:36] Korny: That beign said I've never really had an issue with my ion 1 boxes either for 99% of the things I watch
[04:00:27] wagnerrp: having used XvMC in the past, and the unstable early days of VDPAU, i just can't bring myself to rely on hardware decoding
[04:00:37] wagnerrp: all my machines have enough power to decode in software
[04:02:01] Korny: TO each their own, the only reason I put my nvidia card back in my frontend was for HD Audio MA
[04:02:15] Korny: Intel videocard would not pass it through
[04:02:31] wagnerrp: yeah. i still haven't gotten my pentium to do bitstreaming
[04:02:36] wagnerrp: but it does LPCM just fine otherwise
[04:02:59] Korny: is that equilent?
[04:03:04] Korny: sigh equivilent
[04:03:10] Korny: sigh I can't spell tonight
[04:03:30] wagnerrp: it just means you're decoding it locally, and sending raw PCM to the receiver, rather than having the receiver decode it itself
[04:03:58] wagnerrp: although i'm not actually certain if we can fully decode DTS-MA and MHD
[04:04:22] wagnerrp: in any case, i don't have the speaker system for it to make any difference
[04:04:25] Korny: Well I know you can decode it enough so that it plays on a stero TV :P
[04:05:09] Narr0wm1nd: can I increase the log level of mythbackend with signals or something?

[04:05:28] wagnerrp: you can increase it on the command line

[21:27:43] bill6502: jarle: Your backtrace looks almost identical to mine (I don't have the __deallocate_stack entry on line 454.) If you're building from source, --disable-libcec worked around the problem for me (0.27-pre2.) What version of MythTV and distribution are you running?
[21:28:47] jarle: bill6502: yes, see the ticket I just posted: http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/11468
[21:29:32] jarle: bill6502: it is obvious that the problem is related to libcece, so I guess just --disable-libcec will work.
[21:29:53] jarle: bill6502: 0.26-fixes and xubuntu 12.10
[21:30:26] tgm4883: or installing a different version of libcec it seems
[21:31:25] jarle: tgm4883: yes, but as I don't need it --disable-libcec would be the prefered option I think.

[21:31:58] tgm4883: jarle, providing you are compiling from source, then yes, that would be the correct option.

[21:34:51] tgm4883: jarle, that was my understanding when I looked into it. You had to have HDMI AND a specific version of libcec AND your TV had to also support CEC
[21:35:10] tgm4883: s/TV/whatever you are outputting to/
[21:35:55] jarle: tgm4883: for some reason, sometimes it works and sometimes it crashes, so it is not to easy to get a backtrace really :)
[21:36:23] tgm4883: jarle, I'm not sure that is necessary. We just need to get a proper version of libcec installed
[21:37:02] jarle: tgm4883: yes (and I did get a backtrace that I attached to my ticket)

[22:16:08] sphery: tgm4883: remember when we had a conversation about the libcec version in some Ubuntu version being buggy? We had looked into a frontend segfault and it was due to a null pointer in libcec that was fixed in a version that was released right after the Ubuntu version? (See http://irc.mythtv.org/ircLog/channel/4/2012-09-07 if you want to look it over, but 04:47:34 is the summary/result)
[22:16:51] tgm4883: sphery, yep, already looked at the backlog :)
[22:17:02] sphery: I thought you were going to get libcec 1.6.3 as the required version for mythtv package
[22:17:16] tgm4883: sphery, we've got to get it backported first
[22:17:22] tgm4883: it's currently not available in the repos
[22:17:24] sphery: yeah, I just saw the ticket and since it's ref'ing the same issue we discussed back then...
[22:17:45] tgm4883: and the maintainer isn't available, so we're going to see if we can SRU it ourselves until it gets sorted
[22:17:53] tgm4883: err, sorted in debian
[22:18:22] sphery: While we /could/ do a version check and disable with a bad version, for this one, it seems like it /should/ be short-term enough to just close as an upstream bug with use libcec 1.6.3+ or configure with --disable-libcec
[22:18:49] sphery: ok...
[22:19:00] tgm4883: I like how we both refer to each other as upstream :)
[22:19:05] sphery: hehe
[22:19:18] sphery: well, I'm referring to libcec as upstream
[22:19:33] sphery: you guys are the ones who package all the upstreams to make something actually useful :)
[22:20:09] sphery: I was surprised to see that come in, today, since I figured it was fixed back in Sep/Oct timeframe...
[22:20:20] tgm4883: yea I thought it was fixed as well
[22:20:29] tgm4883: apparenlty the maintainer doesn't check his email
[22:20:33] tgm4883: and isn't on IRC anymore
[22:20:44] sphery: (though I totally understand how it could take longer--and the whole real life gets in the way part)
[22:20:56] sphery: not to mention politics, which often become a part
[22:21:28] sphery: so, just noticed you were talking with jarle above... probably about the same thing
[22:21:41] tgm4883: yep
[22:21:50] sphery: jarle: FWIW, you need libcec 1.6.3 or higher to use libcec with mythtv
[22:22:39] sphery: bill6502: ^^^
