[00:13:54] mark2013: From the MythTV Setup – Program Schedule Downloading page – Automatically Update Program Listings --- If I have the auto with a checkmark, the tuner (silicondust) lights up both tuner LEDs. If the box is unchecked, the LEDs are off. Can this be fixed so Myth isn't using both tuners with no live tv and no recording jobs scheduled?
[00:14:23] [R]: downloading listings has ntohign to do with using the tuner
[00:14:38] wagnerrp: perhaps you accidentally enabled EIT?
[00:17:43] mark2013: I'm pretty confused. EIT is NOT supposed to be checked? I like having my OTA tv grid of programs (in USA)
[00:19:10] wagnerrp: EIT means your tuner is always in use, scanning through the channels and grabbing guide data
[00:22:29] wagnerrp: EIT is not supposed to be checked for North American users, since they're supposed to get their guide data from SD
[00:23:09] mark2013: So, I should have this set to No Grabber in vid sources?
[00:23:35] wagnerrp: mythtv must have guide data to function properly
[00:23:41] wagnerrp: so if you have no grabber, then you must use EIT
[00:23:47] wagnerrp: which means your tuners are always in use
[00:24:38] mark2013: OK, I will not use EIT and select Grabber to Transmitted Guide only
[00:24:48] [R]: that is eit...
[00:24:59] [R]: you need schedules direct
[00:25:39] mark2013: I'm retired, living on Soc Sec and can't afford that very nice, but for me $$$ service.
[00:26:04] [R]: then i guess you're tuner will always be in use then
[00:27:02] mark2013: What is the reason for "forcing" schedules direct? I don't want more than to be able to use tv-grid to select shows to record at later time.
[00:27:18] [R]: nothign is being forced
[00:27:22] [R]: you need to get guide data from somewhere
[00:27:24] wagnerrp: because EIT in the US sucks
[00:27:24] [R]: you can get crap from eit
[00:27:34] wagnerrp: the FCC only mandates 12 hours of data
[00:27:39] wagnerrp: so that's all most stations provide
[00:27:42] [R]: or you can pay a little bit of money and get quality data
[00:28:34] wagnerrp: you can't do much with the scheduler if you only have 12 hours of data
[00:28:45] mark2013: yes, and sometimes the grid listings are catty-wumpus, with info mixed up as to times, but not schedule of say: Law and Order day and time OK, but program info for Chinese Mandarin Drama
[00:28:56] wagnerrp: and that's assuming those 12 hours are even accurate, which they are often not
[00:29:28] mark2013: again, I'm retired and usually don't record a show more than a few hours in advance and never more than 12 hours in advance

[01:00:00] maclilly: I am brand new to Mythtv and need some help. I have a Hauppauge-2250 dual tuner connected to an antenna in California. I have installed a driver, I've successfully run "scan", which gave me a reasonable channels.conf file. I can open channels.conf in VLC and watch TV that way, so I think the tuner and driver are ok. I can play a test video using the frontend, so I think that's ok too. ...
[01:00:02] maclilly: ...However, when I try to scan for channels, it finds none. Can anyone suggest what to do next? I haven't found a solution using google.
[01:00:34] wagnerrp: what settings did you use to scan?
[01:01:02] maclilly: I'm not sure which settings to report... there are a million.
[01:01:29] wagnerrp: modulation, channel list?
[01:01:45] maclilly: Let me check...
[01:02:39] maclilly: In "Capture Card Setup" I have MPEG-2 encoder card...
[01:02:51] maclilly: Video device is /dev/video0...
[01:03:07] maclilly: VBI device is /dev/vbi0...
[01:03:53] maclilly: In "Video sources" I'm using Schedules Direct...
[01:04:02] wagnerrp: yeah, california doesn't have any analog channels to scan
[01:04:20] wagnerrp: you need to set up the ATSC side
[01:04:30] maclilly: How do I do that?
[01:04:34] wagnerrp: should be /dev/dvb/adapter0 and /dev/dvb/adapter1
[01:04:44] wagnerrp: select the 'DVB DTV' tuner type and mythtv should autodiscover them
[01:06:32] maclilly: I'm trying that now...
[01:06:48] maclilly: The scan is saying 0 channels

[01:08:23] maclilly: By the way, the backend and frontend applications are very hard for me to use. The mouse just disappears; it's strange
[01:09:20] wagnerrp: that's because mythtv is expected to be used on a tv, with a remote control
[01:09:24] wagnerrp: not with a mouse
[01:09:45] wagnerrp: see '--help', there's a command line flag you can pass to enable the mouse cursor
[01:10:56] maclilly: I've only started the app from the gui. How do I invoke it from the command line?
[01:11:10] wagnerrp: mythtv-setup

[01:11:46] maclilly: Should I try "Fetch channels from listings source" instead of "Scan..."?
[01:12:14] wagnerrp: no, that only works for analog
[01:12:19] wagnerrp: for digital, you must scan
[01:12:23] maclilly: I see
[01:12:59] maclilly: I stopped the scan (it was taking a long time) and discovered it had found some channels
[01:13:13] maclilly: Maybe I should try again and let it finish?
[01:15:48] wagnerrp: it will take several minutes

[01:24:28] maclilly: Typing "mythtv-setup --help" just gave me "mythtv-backend stop/waiting" then "mythtv-backend start/running, process 3495" then nothing at all
[01:26:27] maclilly: So I finished the scan — I'm pretty sure it must've found some — but now when I run the frontend and select "Watch TV" nothing happens (actually, it flashes something for a frame or two first)

[01:38:03] Akriss: I was doing some disk cleanup and noticed that there seemed to be a bunch of orphaned files in my recording directory. So I went though the Dir and deleted all of the oldest files up to the last known/oldest recorded show date that I can see. So far MythTV seems oblivious to what I did. However I’m still a bit wet behind the ears as far as MythTV and I,m wondering if I just screwed up?
[01:38:40] wagnerrp: maclilly: then you're using a distro that has replaced mythtv-setup with a wrapper script tied into the init system
[01:38:44] wagnerrp: try 'mythtv-setup.real'
[01:39:35] wagnerrp: Akriss: how is mythtv 'oblivious' to what you've done?
[01:39:51] wagnerrp: if you deleted files with no matched recording, then mythtv doesn't care one way or another
[01:42:18] Akriss: Ok thank you
[01:50:29] maclilly: Re: mythtv-setup.real... Thanks, that helped

[19:00:49] tdotr6: Hey Guy's I have spent over 3 days trying this , multi purchase on differnt hardware and googled for the life of me. I have come to the gods of IRC to see maybe If they will avoid me hanging my self if a few hours.
[19:00:55] tdotr6: I have a HVR 1600, and would like to get Analog NTSC Cable to scan, I have the IVTV drivers installed and it works if i run the ivtv-tune command , I just am unable in mythtv to get the channels to scan they all come up LOCKED
[19:01:28] tdotr6: should I just find a old version of mythtv and install that instead of 0.26
[19:06:02] wagnerrp: you're using /dev/video0 and the MPEG tuner type?
[19:06:10] tdotr6: Yes
[19:06:20] wagnerrp: you shouldn't be scanning analog channels. pull a lineup from your schedules direct account
[19:06:40] tdotr6: I manage to get video also if I use tvheadend, It's VERY Staticy, but if i make a service for the tuner half and hit play
[19:07:06] tdotr6: I can change the channels with command line in another ssh session running ivtv -c 4 lets say
[19:07:14] tdotr6: and it will change the channel on tvheadend
[19:07:33] tdotr6: but its VERY shit quality not tunned correctly it looks to be
[19:07:45] tdotr6: BUT if I run ivtv tune and then play it with the mplayer
[19:07:56] tdotr6: Like save it to a file, and play that . It works very nice
[19:07:57] wagnerrp: since the -1600 is an analog compressor, you may have the compression turned down too low
[19:08:05] tdotr6: no audio but thats a different thing
[19:08:36] tdotr6: but I dont want to use tvheadend, that was just a test to see if the card was even working

[19:09:42] tdotr6: but when I tune in mythtv , and I use mpeg /dev/video0
[19:10:00] tdotr6: and go to scan for channels , I have even done TRY ALL it scans like 900 channels, all LOCKED
[19:10:21] wagnerrp: all... 900?
[19:10:28] wagnerrp: analog cable only has 125 channels
[19:10:31] tdotr6: I have selected TV, TV + RADIO, ALL... I have tried both click options
[19:10:43] wagnerrp: and as mentioned, you shouldn't be scanning. pull a lineup from your schedules direct account
[19:10:45] stuartm: err, that's a DIGITAL scan
[19:10:46] tdotr6: Yea exactly , But when you do a TRY ALL it even does the euro shit, it was really pointless
[19:11:05] tdotr6: Ok wag, I have done that also
[19:11:12] tdotr6: and I get a correct list
[19:11:21] tdotr6: how do I populate channels from that then?
[19:11:23] tdotr6: :/
[19:11:30] stuartm: you sure you've chosen the correct card type in the 'Capture Cards' screen?
[19:11:39] tdotr6: Yes
[19:11:45] wagnerrp: in input connections, there should be two options
[19:11:48] wagnerrp: one to scan for channels
[19:11:54] wagnerrp: another to pull from listings provider
[19:11:56] tdotr6: yes I tried that

[19:12:06] stuartm: although it's just possible we're showing the scan screen for analogue when we shouldn't be
[19:12:18] tdotr6: so It should populate the CHANNELS , not just the LISTINGS correct?
[19:12:38] tdotr6: Ahh I understand now I think

[19:12:47] wagnerrp: correct
[19:12:56] tdotr6: im telling you guys, 3 days. NO SLEEP idk why I didnt try IRC chat before :(
[19:13:40] tdotr6: so It just highlights it , and then I click next?
[19:13:55] tdotr6: or do I have to wait for something, I guess thats where I got confused before and didnt think it did anything
[19:14:08] wagnerrp: i don't recall specifically, been several years since i've done it
[19:14:42] tdotr6: Ok Ill try it out
[19:16:11] wagnerrp: if it seems to fail, i know at some point there was an issue where it would take too long to get a response from SD, and mythtv would time out on the download
[19:16:19] wagnerrp: however that should be fixed

[21:37:53] maclilly: I am new to Mythtv and need some more help. I have configured the backend and my channel scan finds a reasonable set of channels for over-the-air in California. When I try to view live TV in the frontend, it stops as soon as it starts and on the command line I see:
[21:37:55] maclilly: "It appears that your backend may be misconfigured. Check your backend logs to determine whether your capture cards, lineups, channels, or storage configuration are reporting errors. This issue is commonly caused by failing to complete all setup steps properly."
[21:37:56] maclilly: The backend log has this:
[21:37:57] sl1ce (sl1ce!~johnathan@pool-100-0-73-123.bstnma.fios.verizon.net) has quit (Client Quit)
[21:37:58] maclilly: "(HandleStateChange) TVRec(4): Changing from None to WatchingLiveTV

[21:38:02] maclilly: (HandleStateChange) TVRec(4): Changing from WatchingLiveTV to None"
[21:38:04] maclilly: When I first setup the backend Input Connections had Starting Channel set to 28, but I've tried changing this to other channels detected in the scan (11_1, 5_1, etc) but I still get the above results. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance

[21:41:40] maclilly: Using VLC I have verified that I can pull signals from the antenna and view them
[21:43:07] lapion: just pass through each encoding profile and walk through all steps.
[21:43:52] maclilly: Is this something I do in mythtv-setup? Which part?
[21:45:43] lapion: yes in mythtv-setup, go in the recording profile menu, open each group, within each group open each profile and save them.
[21:51:34] maclilly: Under Recording Profiles I see: Hardware DVB Encoders and Transcoders. Under Hardware DVB Encoders I see: Default, Live TV, High Quality and Low Quality. Under each of these there is not much I can change and nothing about saving. There is Recording Type which is set to Normal (not TV only or Audio only) in every case.
[21:51:42] maclilly: Is this what I want?
[21:51:52] faichele___ (faichele___!~quassel@p5499F413.dip.t-dialin.net) has quit (Read error: Operation timed out)
[21:53:04] lapion: yeah just pass through each and save.
[21:53:15] lapion: no need to change anything
[21:53:31] maclilly: Doing that now... (Transcoders also?)
[21:54:13] lapion: yes
[21:54:30] lapion: otherwhise you will not be able to transcode
[21:56:52] maclilly: No luck. When I run the frontend I get the same output as above and the backend log has the same output also.
[21:58:02] maclilly: Any more ideas? I'm at a loss. It seems to be related to my Start Channel somehow.
[21:58:28] lapion: you have a standard dvb card/stick ?
[21:58:55] maclilly: I'm using a Hauppauge-2250 dual tuner connected to my antenna in California.
[21:59:27] maclilly: I chose this because it looked like others had it as well.
[21:59:35] lapion: of the channels encoded ?
[21:59:49] lapion: *encrypted
[22:01:16] maclilly: That would be reported in the Channel Editor, right? I can open each channel and check. They shouldn't be encrypted since this is generic over-the-air.
[22:03:08] maclilly: I'm checking each channel and don't see anything about encryption. I DO see that the TV Format field is blank for each. Should I change that to NTSC?
