I said "may raise idle power usage about 7W if you add a discrete nvidia video card", and at http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/538092#538092 , we learn that a GT520 took up about 8W. I can't believe I said 7W, when it's so obvious that it would be more...
[02:43:12] sphery: (or wait, could this be the whole, "some people try to save power without ever measuring" thing...)

[04:23:38] neufeld_AFK: Hilikus: I have a bit of a weird setup. I use the HD-PVR's IR transmitter, but not to control the STB that feeds the HD-PVR. I don't use the IR receiver.
[04:23:41] neufeld_AFK is now known as neufeld
[04:24:05] [R]: neufeld: so i'm an idiot
[04:24:18] Hilikus: neufeld: which kernel module do you use?
[04:25:05] neufeld: Hilikus: I'm with Rogers, their STB cannot be controlled by USB or Firewire. The transmitter is lirc_zilog, along with hdpvr and pvrusb2
[04:25:53] neufeld: [R]: Hrm? Did a TOSLink cable fall out of its socket? That always killed my recordings.
[04:26:05] [R]: neufeld: my channel change script was failing
[04:26:19] Hilikus: there's a sentence in the mythtv wiki that says that ir_kbd_i2c freezes the device. is that still true with the latest firmware? 1.7.1
[04:27:15] neufeld: Hilikus: I bought one of these: http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.p . . . em_id=027737 It controls the STB attached to my HD-PVR. You don't need ir_kbd_i2c unless you're using the IR receiver on the HD-PVR. I don't recommend that. I've been using a full keyboard.
[04:27:41] neufeld: [R]: well, that would do it too.
[04:27:58] [R]: neufeld: that really should be a prominent error in the log
[04:28:05] [R]: oh well
[04:28:27] Hilikus: neufeld: how did you find out that your STB could not be controlled by uisb or firewire?
[04:28:49] Hilikus: mine's with videotron and there's a USB port, a firewire and a round one that says IR
[04:29:01] Hilikus: its a scientific atlanta
[04:29:03] tlhiv_laptop (tlhiv_laptop!~foo@c-68-35-204-183.hsd1.al.comcast.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[04:30:23] neufeld: Hilikus: Rogers is also Scientific Atlanta. I pestered their tech support and got escalated by asking questions beyond the scope of their script. I also attached a firewire connector, it didn't even show up on the device bus.
[04:31:15] [R]: i once called my cable company asking about firewire "firewall, oh let me transfer you"
[04:31:18] neufeld: Hilikus: Rogers disables the Firewire and USB ports, their second-level tech says the ports are only present for diagnostic tests, that they don't present themselves as real devices.
[04:31:58] neufeld: [R]: if you're in the US, you've got an FCC regulation that requires them to make the Firewire available to you on request, if not already enabled. The CRTC up here doesn't have that rule.
[04:32:11] [R]: neufeld: oh it was enabled, i had a bad cable
[04:32:23] Hilikus: what about the "IR" jack. you have any idea what that is?
[04:32:26] neufeld: Hilikus: the IR socket is probably a 3.5mm socket to control an IR-blaster
[04:33:10] Hilikus: ok so i also can't be use to change channels
[04:33:11] neufeld: Hilikus: if you've got the model number of the device you can look up its specs, downloaded from Scientific Atlanta (they're Cisco now).
[04:33:52] Hilikus: ok, i will try that tomorrow
[04:34:08] neufeld: Hilikus: correct. Fortunately, the IR codes for these boxes are simple to get, either the HD-PVR or vanilla LIRC can send them. It's SAE8000
[04:35:21] Hilikus: i've used my IR blaster for a while now, i just wanted to change the system of having a piece of hardware attached to the front of the STB. 1/100 times it misses a digit
[04:36:21] jheizer__ (jheizer__!~jon@c-98-226-220-178.hsd1.il.comcast.net) has quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
[04:36:46] Hilikus: another question. could i use my STB remote to control mythtv somehow? my hauppauge RC is dying. the buttons are all hard now. I would like to use the IR receiver in the HDPVR
[04:37:40] neufeld: Hilikus: depending on the intensity of the transmitter and its placement, that can be a problem. My old IR-blaster was very faint. The MCE one is bright enough to be obvious when it turns on. One problem I had was that the receiver wasn't where the manual said it was, it was about 1cm to the right of there, so I was getting channel-changing issues. Once I shone a bright light in there and spotted the receiver, I
[04:37:40] neufeld: was able to get very reliable channel-changing with the IR-blaster.
[04:38:53] Hilikus: getting rid of one RC would be awesome
[04:38:57] neufeld: Hilikus: again, using the receiver on the HD-PVR is, last I heard, risky, with the chance of kernel lockups. If I wanted to use a remote, I'd use the MCE one I linked above from Canada Computers. I'm not using the remote control part of it now, because I prefer a full wireless keyboard, but a remote does come in the box.
[04:39:22] [R]: i just use a serial ir reciver and whatever the hell remote i want
[04:39:23] [R]: :P
[04:40:19] neufeld: Yes, if you've got LIRC for receiving, you can do that. It's a bit more complicated to both receive and transmit, in that the LIRC installer doesn't seem to consider that possibility so you have to tweak things by hand, including editing the startup scripts.
[04:40:42] [R]: thats why you have seperate frontend and backend...
[04:41:51] neufeld: [R]: Well, the way everything is set up here, I could have separate computers for those, but they would be stacked on top of each other. I have another frontend upstairs, but the backend is also a frontend in its own right.
[04:42:07] [R]: i just my backend in a closer
[04:42:09] [R]: closet*
[04:42:14] [R]: out of sight, out of mind
[04:42:15] [R]: haha
[04:42:19] [R]: i shove*
[04:42:41] neufeld: Mine is in the furnace room behind a thin wall. I've cut a small hole in the wall between that and the theatre, and all the cables come through that.
[04:43:25] [R]: ah
[04:43:38] neufeld: Don't use the optical drive in that machine, except for a single DVD we have that is, strangely, region 3, and so won't play on our consumer DVD players.
[04:45:25] neufeld: OK, going on midnight here, I'm wandering off for the evening. Bye.

[18:24:48] tcl4m: Is anyone having problems with the MythVideo Metadata scanner? Every time I run it I end up with two records in the videometadata table for every video in my collection. One has the Episode/Series/category correct (but no title, etc) and the other one with them blank.
[18:26:17] faichele (faichele!~quassel@p4FCCEAF6.dip.t-dialin.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[18:28:07] wagnerrp: are you running "file browse mode"? do you have the file paths defined both on your frontend and in mythtv-setup?
[18:28:25] wagnerrp: the file scanner should not allow duplicates
[18:28:37] tcl4m: yes, in file browse mode.
[18:28:42] tcl4m: This is on a combined FE/BE
[18:28:47] wagnerrp: turn off file browse mode
[18:28:53] wagnerrp: it does nothing good
[18:29:03] tcl4m: ok, I'll try that.
[18:30:17] tcl4m: This is very repeatable. I have paired my collection down to one properly named television show, and after I run the scan for changes.
[18:30:43] tcl4m: I get one entry in the database tagged as TELEVISION, and the second one is MOVIE
[18:30:45] wagnerrp: the scanner needs to be replaced, and it is in my plans for 0.27
[18:31:18] tcl4m: I have been looking around in the code to see where the second INSERT into the database occurs, but I can not find it.
[18:31:29] tcl4m: do you know how the scanner code is structured?
[18:32:44] wagnerrp: the scanner gets a list of active backends, and a list of all storage group paths defined on those backends. it iteratively scans through all those paths, collecting a list of video paths relative to the base of the storage group paths.
[18:33:06] wagnerrp: it then checks for matching paths already in the database. anything that doesn't match, it hashes and checks for a matching hash.
[18:33:23] wagnerrp: anything in the database but not found is removed. anything not in the database but found is added
[18:33:41] wagnerrp: database content listed on an offline backend is ignored
[18:34:32] tcl4m: I have been DELETING all records in the videometadata table between runs of the scanner in case that matters.
[18:34:59] tcl4m: I see the first pass occur where the file is hashed, and the correctly parsed entry is added.
[18:35:49] tcl4m: Then when it goes back to grab the entry to perform the internet database lookup, it is grabbing the incorrect second record.
[18:36:05] tcl4m: In this case it is marked MOVIE, and has no series or episode set.
[18:36:12] skd5aner: wagnerrp: back in 0.24 or 0.25, I had an issue where artwork in storage groups wasn't working correctly unless I manually fudged with the storage group setup on my sbe/fe... does that issue ring a bell with you?
[18:36:43] wagnerrp: in 0.25, i had slave backends with no Videos group defined pick up the paths off the master backend
[18:36:49] skd5aner: wagnerrp: I don't recall the specifics, I only bring it up because I've been in this quasi-weird config for a wihle (based on your advice), and was curious if your work was addressing that issue as well
[18:36:52] wagnerrp: however the various artwork groups never had the same treatment
[18:37:13] wagnerrp: which would result in such slave backends being unable to receive artwork unless those groups were manually defined
[18:37:23] wagnerrp: however that would have been the requirement anyway in 0.24
[18:37:31] skd5aner: ok – honestly, I don't remember the exact issue... I "fixed" it and never looked back – but your conversation here reminded me of it
[18:38:02] wagnerrp: the only potential issue would have been when you had several slave backends, and each had mounted the video locally to work around issues with encrypted ISOs
[18:38:05] skd5aner: I see it every now and then when I have to deal with mythtv-setup and it complains that no storage groups are set up and ask me if I know what I'm doing
[18:38:07] skd5aner: something like that
[18:38:25] wagnerrp: since the hashing process would result in the videos being randomly placed on one of the host, and cycled on each scan
[18:38:29] skd5aner: that could be it too...
[18:38:40] wagnerrp: artwork is expected to be on the same host that claims a video
[18:38:41] skd5aner: but, I only have 1 sbe
[18:39:11] skd5aner: I honestly forget my particular situation – wonder if it'd be easy to find in the irc logs
[18:39:26] skd5aner: wouldn't even know what to search for though to make it stand out
[18:40:11] wagnerrp: i'm pretty sure that was it
[18:40:16] wagnerrp: you had your videos mounted on both machines
[18:40:36] wagnerrp: and had to set some dummy path on your slave backend to prevent it from picking up the master's paths
[18:43:02] skd5aner: yea, probably correct
[18:43:30] skd5aner: is the stuff you're working on going to try and "fix" tjat
[18:43:32] skd5aner: that
[18:44:12] wagnerrp: i'm replacing the video scanner with a generic file scanner, that tracks the exact location (including duplicates) of any file in any defined storage group path
[18:44:46] wagnerrp: that includes recordings, screenshots, database backups, and anything else that might be in there
[18:45:05] wagnerrp: the video library would then just filter through it for the specific files it wants
[18:45:09] tcl4m: Any plans for handling DVDs that contain multiple TV episodes?
[18:45:23] wagnerrp: that will potentially come a bit later
[18:45:34] tcl4m: oh – if it make a difference this was working perfect on 0.25fixes
[18:45:44] tcl4m: it died when I upgraded to 0.26
[18:46:09] wagnerrp: one of the other devs has plans for a major schema rewrite that partially merges all the various tables for media storage
[18:46:28] wagnerrp: and part of that would include one-to-many and many-to-one mapping for videos
[18:46:47] wagnerrp: that would allow for videos with multiple parts, and files with multiple videos
[18:47:33] wagnerrp: obviously such a thing would have to be configured manually, as there is no simple manner to know a DVD contains several episodes
[18:48:03] wagnerrp: there were no differences in the video library between 0.25 and 0.26 that might have caused a change in behavior
[18:49:12] tcl4m: Thanks for your help.
[18:50:12] tcl4m: I will probably add some more debugging statements to the code tonight to see if I can determine what is going on.
[18:51:25] wagnerrp: unless it's something simple, i wouldn't expect it to be fixed prior to 0.27

[20:46:40] justinh: Oh boy. I never knew how much I hated email until I tried to set up an email server with dovecot, SASL & virtual domains
[20:47:24] justinh: I now realise why so many people run their home servers in VMs
[20:48:10] justinh: it's because they don't want their noobish fiddling to completely hose working services. Which is what following most howtos will allow you to do with great ease. Especially those involving control panels
[20:49:57] justinh: after battling for the best part of a day to get my http server working again (I know, I shoulda backed up all the config files first) I've asked the vendor to reinstall my VPS. Vast quantities of humble pie have been consumed & I'll only be using a home VM as guinea pig from here
[20:51:05] justinh: ISPCP wasn't too bad, but it stopped a site which was working just fine under ordinary LAMP, to stop working apart from the admin pages. With nothing in the way of explanation. But hey, email worked fine!
[20:51:52] justinh: so, mythtv – it's really not all that complicated to set up
[20:51:55] AndyCap: suddenly I feel lucky I can manage without CP
[20:52:20] justinh: I mean I'm not thick by any stretch of the imagination, but it seems not a single howto covers enough bases
[20:52:48] ** AndyCap suspects a number of howtos are written by planks of wood **
[20:52:55] justinh: even iredmail managed to hose my http :-\
[20:53:29] justinh: run this script.. uhoh... it made too many assumptions. Uninstall it.. and almost without prompting the uninstaller's gonna wipe out /var/lib/mysql ! :-O
[20:53:43] AndyCap: O_o
[20:53:53] justinh: er no.. that's not how you're supposed to drop a database. FFS
[20:54:17] justinh: I say almost. It *asks* if you want to descend into /var/lib/mysql
[20:54:27] AndyCap: sure it is, and I chop my finger off if it gets an ink smudge
[20:54:33] justinh: lol
[20:54:44] justinh: not so much lol.. more SOB.. actually
[20:54:58] justinh: this thing has been driving me to the point of distraction these last few days
[20:55:24] AndyCap: yeah, had a happy fun time playing with asterisk something management panel and had it wreck my web server document root
[20:55:33] justinh: postfix on its own.. easy peasy. Dovecot + postfix.. again.. pretty straightforwards.. but adding auth on top... OY
[20:55:33] AndyCap: Mine! All MINE!!
[20:56:04] AndyCap: feels latest dovecot config went a little grub2 on me
[20:56:05] justinh: and what's with all the mysql for auth stuff? Christ, I'm gonna have maybe 10 email accounts all told
[20:56:48] justinh: but ispcp made it easy. one script.. then the setup for domains & users was almost poetic.. but I can't forgive what it did to the PHP sites
[20:56:53] AndyCap: yeah, a simpler password file setup should not require +10 google dexterity and a saving throw to fix
[20:56:55] justinh: not even a sniff in the logs
[20:57:14] AndyCap: Yay, my printer wants to scan samples again
[20:57:20] justinh: oh I had the aliases file & all that I just couldn't get auth to work for toffee
[20:57:47] justinh: I think another reason for all this stuff being so 'magic'.. it keeps the panel developers in jobs
[20:58:00] justinh: and keeps beards in sandals
[20:58:02] justinh: ;-)

[21:00:20] LordBeppo: all 3rd level screens are not displayed anymore

[21:00:25] justinh: LordBeppo: what resolution you running at?

[21:00:41] justinh: AndyCap: they led me down the path of destruction
[21:01:01] AndyCap: justinh: yeah, saw my fair share of broken howtos helping out in #fedora
[21:01:22] justinh: it all goes fine til I find stuff about PAM not finding the user trying to log into SMTP
[21:01:24] AndyCap: justinh: some of them must be written by Pat & Mat
[21:01:55] justinh: LordBeppo: more than likely, missing fonts & crap... I dunno. All the times I've ever seen that problem personally the screen was too low res

[21:03:15] AndyCap: LordBeppo: unfortunately "it stopped working and I changed nothing" problems is hard to figure out. Start the frontend in a terminal window so you can see the debug output? (is that how it's done in 0.26=)
[21:03:30] justinh: it doesn't blimmin help when apt-get's --purge option leaves config files about the place
[21:03:45] justinh: and it also doesn't help that reinstalling a package doesn't always put a new config file in
[21:04:07] AndyCap: justinh: in my experience people who don't write up why you should do a thing do not know themselves and are dangerous
[21:04:20] AndyCap: or cargo-cult worshippers at best
[21:04:33] justinh: yeah well. when this iso is downloaded I'll be all over a VM trying stuff out
[21:04:59] justinh: set the hosts file of my real linux box to point the domains to the VM..
[21:05:01] LordBeppo: i installed the latest mythbuntu updates and since this i got that problem
[21:05:05] justinh: ahh
[21:05:19] justinh: LordBeppo: heh. 'changed nothing' always has that kind of story
[21:05:43] justinh: I haven't updated my backend in oooooh... a LONG time
[21:05:44] LordBeppo: but you guys are right lowering the resolution from 1920x1080 brings back the 3rd level screens
[21:05:52] justinh: really?
[21:05:53] justinh: heh
[21:06:05] LordBeppo: yes
[21:06:10] justinh: interesting though. you might want to flag that in #mythbuntu
[21:06:51] justinh: it may be a 'buntu thing, or it may be a mythtv thing. I've not heard of the res too high ever being an issue
[21:06:53] AndyCap: dunno if ubuntu logs it, but if you know the package versions you had before the upgrade #mythbuntu might find that useful as well?
[21:07:10] AndyCap: shared graphics memory problem?
[21:07:21] justinh: you can run mythfrontend with -v gui
[21:08:39] LordBeppo: after setting the res back to 1920x1080 now works
[21:09:14] justinh: oh, and when this VM is installed I'm listing the base packages
[21:09:36] LordBeppo: thank you guys i'll report that to mythbuntu.
[21:10:07] justinh: I wonder if the resolution had actually become an illegal value which threw qt into a wobble
[21:10:20] justinh: all the inner setup screens are qt.
[21:10:38] justinh: that's why they generally look like.. er.. like they do :-)
[21:11:47] LordBeppo: ok, maybe a problem with qt and ati drivers
[21:12:12] justinh: aw. people still use ATI? heh
[21:12:28] AndyCap: Heh. bought my first amd thing in years recently.
[21:12:43] LordBeppo: lol yes... the poor people
[21:13:08] justinh: ati & linux... not so much a good idea unless you hit lucky & continue to be lucky
[21:13:13] AndyCap: was unable to find a mini-itx board with decent cpu power and nvidia graphics
[21:14:25] justinh: my current frontend is going to be going
[21:14:34] justinh: then my backend will be my frontend
[21:14:54] justinh: it just sits there, doing stuff the backend is more than capable of doing
[21:15:24] AndyCap: just running cables to the telly?
[21:15:35] justinh: yeah. one cat5 cable will do it
[21:15:48] justinh: built my own cat5 a/v sender/receiver years ago
[21:16:00] justinh: put svideo & stereo audio down a cat5 cable & back
[21:16:32] justinh: the remote stuff might be another cat5 cable like
[21:17:07] justinh: I've given up trying to get flash video playback to work now.
[21:17:24] AndyCap: you spent all the wires on s-video and audio?
[21:17:29] justinh: without tearing I mean. I'm astounded that even nvidia on linux is plagued by this
[21:17:38] justinh: AndyCap: yeah. kept it simple
[21:17:46] AndyCap: I would blame flash
[21:17:48] justinh: otherwise I'd have had to make it matrix them
[21:18:48] justinh: AndyCap: the trick to sending anything over cat5 is to make it balanced :-)

[21:19:10] justinh: mind, I never tried just the unscreened cable. it might've been alright

[21:22:30] AndyCap: heh, got a fractal design case, but the best thing I can say about it is that you got a lot of aluminium in the front for your money
[21:23:06] AndyCap: been happy with the tower cases though.
[21:23:27] justinh: better to have no case IMHO
