[00:10:23] Unguided: Hello all and Merry Xmas. Can anyone tell me if their is any advantage to going with iptv (ie ATT Uverse) vs cable?
[00:11:55] [R]: no
[00:12:10] [R]: you need a box regardless
[00:12:55] Unguided: [R] how many channels can you record at one time?
[00:14:02] Unguided: [R]: How many channels can you record at one time?
[00:14:30] [R]: if you use a box, that depends on how many recording devices and how many boxes you have
[00:15:08] Unguided: [R]: So would it be one to one ratio like satellite?
[00:15:28] [R]: of course
[00:15:37] [R]: although with cable sometimes you can get a cablecard
[00:15:48] [R]: but how useful that is, depends on your provider
[00:16:09] fugdnscerd (fugdnscerd!~shane@173-17-71-182.client.mchsi.com) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:16:10] Unguided: ok. I have four hdhr primes and my provider doesnt flag anything
[00:16:26] [R]: well then clearly thats better then using a cablebox...
[00:16:43] Unguided: yep. Just checking to make sure.
[00:16:47] J-e-f-f-A: four primes and no flagging? so basically 12 tuners...
[00:16:56] J-e-f-f-A: bum. ;-)
[00:17:06] Unguided: correct :)
[00:17:24] Da_Coynul (Da_Coynul!~vultur@user-12hckqf.cable.mindspring.com) has quit (Quit: This computer has gone to sleep)
[00:17:36] Unguided: My wife still cant figure out why we need 12 tuners :)
[00:17:39] J-e-f-f-A: I've got a Ceton, and my provider (Verizon FiOS) flags the movie channels and some of the other 'premium' channels...
[00:18:44] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: I started my HD life with two HD-PVRs with HD STB's, and a pair of HDHR's for OTA HD (no clear QAM of interest)... I just added a Ceton a few months ago.
[00:19:35] Unguided: I apologize I think my provider flags premium channels but i dont subscribe to them anyway. Their theory is the cablecard decodes it do want you want. Nice. I was looking at ceton. any easier to setup then hdhr?
[00:19:55] fugdnscerd: hey guys im runnin latest stable myth just compiled from git source... I keep getting a message when exiting mythtv-setup saying it is unable to write .test file in one of my storage group directories when I have verified that the mythtv user IS capable of writing a file with that particular name in said directory.. it displays my storage directory with an extra / before the file name but I have verified even with this typo the fil
[00:20:43] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: I dunno – I haven't setup a HDHR Prime – just my 'standard' HDHR's – which were dead simple.
[00:21:07] [R]: fugdnscerd: what about the user you are running mythtv-setup as?
[00:21:14] fugdnscerd: root
[00:21:14] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: I did have to spend about 40 mins on the phone with Verizon though, as the 1st attempt to activate the Cablecard didn't work...
[00:21:48] Unguided: J-e-f-f-A: gotcha. Do you have the usb or pci version?
[00:22:10] [R]: fugdnscerd: well you shoud'nt be running garphical apps as root... but it shoudtn' have problems writing the dir
[00:23:14] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: PCIe
[00:24:11] Unguided: J-e-f-f-A: I just saw an article that the hdhr prime just got dlna certified. That could be very interested
[00:25:56] fugdnscerd: i am honestly not so worried about being able to write into these directories as I will write into the from a share on my desktop, but I think it has something to do with an error I am getting using upnp anytime I try to play a video via upnp it gives this error on the backend SG(Default): Unable to find any Storage Group Directories. Using hardcoded default value of '/mnt/store'
[00:26:30] [R]: fugdnscerd: your storage groups are probably nto set properly
[00:27:06] fugdnscerd: they list the content within the directories just fine... I should also note the directories are all subdirectories of an nfs share
[00:27:42] [R]: huh?
[00:28:01] fugdnscerd: actually from upnp renderer it gives a big list of files instead of the directory structure, but that may be normal idk
[00:28:42] fugdnscerd: i can see the files from the upnp renderer but i get an error saying the file wasnt found and on the backend the error i previously posted
[00:29:05] Unguided: I was thinking og setting up mythtv in a virtual machine with the storage groups on an nfs share on a freenas box. Would I kill performance?
[00:29:19] fugdnscerd: file wasnt found error is upon trying to play the file
[00:29:50] ** [R] summons wagnerrp **
[00:30:56] fugdnscerd: Unguided thats how I have my install setup only nfs server is debian, I am only expecting it to stream video for now via upnp
[00:31:43] Unguided: I was gonna set mine up in a pcbsd jail then use the nfs share
[00:31:47] Da_Coynul (Da_Coynul!~vultur@user-12hckqf.cable.mindspring.com) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:32:15] fugdnscerd: im using virtualbox under winblows
[00:32:28] Unguided: AHH
[00:32:38] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: Is that DLNA cert only for Winblows? Probably...
[00:33:14] Unguided: Dont know but Im hoping for *nix. They usually dont forget about open source
[00:33:51] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: Yeah, but IIRC, the Ceton is certified too, but not for Linux. :-(
[00:34:23] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: So we can't record "Copy Once" channels, only ones that are not flagged or are flagged as "Copy Freely"
[00:34:30] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: (In Linux)
[00:34:33] fugdnscerd: [R]: i did apply a patch to fix xbox360 upnp functionality so I am gonna try recompiling without and see if anything changes
[00:34:46] Unguided: J-e-f-f-A: Yeah that sucks.
[00:35:09] J-e-f-f-A: fugdnscerd: heh, I just gave my 360 to a friend for his Son for christmas... ;-) Poor timing, eh? ;-)
[00:35:19] Unguided: J-e-f-f-A: I would even know what to use to record for windows other than WMC
[00:35:28] fugdnscerd: lol
[00:36:06] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: Probably Sage... it's similar to Myth, but not as flexible from what I understand... although I've never used it... Been using myth since ~2005
[00:37:19] Unguided: J-e-f-f-A: Im totally new to *nix installed once to "play" with. Actually got myth working. The jail idea came from wagnerrp and he has been an awesome help.'
[00:38:25] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: yep, he's a smart guy, and one of the major contributors to MythTV. ;-)
[00:38:57] Unguided: J-e-f-f-A: So should i build the backend first then the front ends or what is the best way to get going? I would think the backend first.
[00:39:25] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: Backend/Frontend on your backend first, then the plugins.
[00:39:41] Unguided: J-e-f-f-A: mythtv still uses schedules direct right?
[00:39:42] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: Are you going to be running remote frontends, or is this an all-in-one box?
[00:39:48] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: yep.

[00:40:02] Unguided: J-e-f-f-A: remote frontends. Server is in the basement
[00:40:53] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: Ok, then make sure you give your backend a static IP, and set it to listen on that IP. I don't remember if it works with hostnames yet – I think it might, I've been using IP address since the beginning.
[00:41:14] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: And you'll have to do a 'grant' on mysql for your remote frontends to work too.
[00:41:38] Unguided: J-e-f-f-A: The first will be a backend/frontend just in case.
[00:41:55] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: At one point, I had 4 frontends, now I just have 2 at the moment.
[00:42:12] J-e-f-f-A: (3 if you count the backend. ;-) )
[00:42:58] Da_Coynul (Da_Coynul!~vultur@user-12hckqf.cable.mindspring.com) has quit (Quit: This computer has gone to sleep)
[00:43:20] Unguided: J-e-f-f-A: thats why I chose pc bsd. Can use zfs like freenas and can use jails for mythtv. Snapshots are awesome. I will have 3 also including the backend
[00:44:05] Unguided: J-e-f-f-A: I think I am going to use pcbsd on the frontends also. That way I dont get version mismatch
[00:44:17] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: I've got to 'graduate' to using jails too. ;-) Much easier/safer upgrade process. ;-)
[00:44:37] Unguided: J-e-f-f-A: Exactly. Thanks to wagnerrp.
[00:45:47] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: i've run Fedora Core since 'day one'... Although I did setup a MythBuntu frontend on my son's laptop, but since he went off to school, he's turned off MythTV, and is just using it as an Ubuntu Laptop now. ;-)
[00:46:52] Unguided: J-e-f-f-A: There is alot to like about pcbsd. It can use just about all of the linux software
[00:47:06] Unguided: J-e-f-f-A: zfs is self healing
[00:47:37] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: I use XFS – have for the last several years.
[00:48:18] Unguided: J-e-f-f-A: kewl. What is your thought about storage groups on a zfs share? Any problems you can foresee?
[00:48:51] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: I dunno about ZFS – but I've been using them on XFS since their introduction. ;-)
[00:49:38] fugdnscerd: is there zfs support for linux yet?
[00:49:54] Unguided: J-e-f-f-A: Kewl. Then I should be okay. I thought about using xbmc as a fronend also.
[00:50:15] Unguided: fugdnscerd: I dont think so yet
[00:50:28] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: an XBMC system will work, but nowhere near as flexible as a 'real' frontend.
[00:51:30] Unguided: J-e-f-f-A: I was gonna set up myth and xbmc on the same frontend. Version 12 needs a backend to record anyway so why not try it
[00:53:17] Unguided: J-e-f-f-A: I guess version 12 has an addon that allows it to talk to mythtv but xbmc is cross platform so even windows can use it
[00:55:30] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: I hear ya... When I first started with Myth, I was using some UPnP frontends... But only tried XBMC a few times, and much preferred a 'real' frontend.
[00:56:10] Unguided: J-e-f-f-A: Yeah. If I dont like it, no harm no foul just junk it.
[00:57:37] J-e-f-f-A: Unguided: to be honest, I haven't tried it in at 6–12 months- the Myth interface could have been improved since I looked at it...

[19:12:48] tonsofpcs: hls?
[19:13:45] tgm4883: tonsofpcs, http live streaming
[19:14:12] tgm4883: it's built into 0.26 and is exactly what you are looking for it seems. But you would need a frontend that actually requests that stream
[19:14:31] tonsofpcs: tgm4883: the issue is that I don't have 20Mbps bandwidth between the host and client
[19:14:35] tgm4883: and a fast enough backend to transcode the material
[19:14:44] tgm4883: tonsofpcs, yes.... and?
[19:14:44] tonsofpcs: so I need to transcode on-the-fly or in-advance
[19:14:56] tonsofpcs: does HLS do on-the-fly transcode?
[19:14:58] tgm4883: tonsofpcs, yea, I got that. Which is why I recommended HLS
[19:15:05] tgm4883: tonsofpcs, yes, it does that by definition
[19:15:16] tonsofpcs: (sorry for delay, I'm on a terrible ssh connection)
[19:15:26] tonsofpcs: (and I'm trying to run myth-setup over it too)
[19:16:16] tonsofpcs: I suppose I could move to 0.26, I'm on 0.25 on mythbuntu x64 currently
[19:16:35] tgm4883: tonsofpcs, 12.04?
[19:16:47] tonsofpcs: ya
[19:17:10] tgm4883: tonsofpcs, easy enough to move then
[19:17:15] tonsofpcs: installed maybe a month ago
[19:17:44] tonsofpcs: anything fancy need to be done with hardware (like reboots) or should I be good to do this remotely via ssh / xfwds ?
[19:18:37] tgm4883: remotely should be fine, you would need to run the usual mythtv stuff to upgrade the DB. Note that the mythtv frontend doesn't do HLS, so you would need to use a frontend that supports it
[19:19:56] tonsofpcs: shouldn't the backend or mythweb do the HLS ?
[19:20:37] tgm4883: tonsofpcs, you would need a frontend that requests the HLS stream
[19:20:45] tgm4883: rather than the regular stream
[19:20:51] tgm4883: also, what backend specs do you have?
[19:21:35] tonsofpcs: oh, you mean the remote client would be a myt frontend that supports hls
[19:22:10] tonsofpcs: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
[19:22:15] tonsofpcs: 4 GB RAM
[19:22:39] tgm4883: the remote client needs to know enough to request the HLS stream. Mythfrontend doesn't know to do that
[19:24:06] tonsofpcs: and an Nvidia GPU (GT240?)
[19:24:07] tgm4883: technically, it needs to know 3 things. 1) to request that a HLS stream be created for a program, 2) to request that HLS stream for playback, 3) to request the HLS stream be deleted when finished
[19:24:25] tgm4883: that backend should be fine to do HLS
[19:24:41] tonsofpcs: is there a way to do this with a link from mythweb?
[19:25:15] tonsofpcs: like, right now mythweb has an embedded flowplayer (flash) and a link to an ASX stream. A link to a HLS stream or an embedded HLS player (HTML5?) would be nice
[19:25:27] tonsofpcs: anyway, first I need 0.26, right?
[19:25:36] tgm4883: tonsofpcs, not really, let me explain a bit
[19:26:14] tgm4883: tonsofpcs, http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Content_Service#Ad . . . ngLiveStream
[19:26:19] tonsofpcs: well, I want tto be able to watch these remotely in places where I don't have a mythtv frontend....
[19:26:42] tgm4883: I forget what the defaults are, but you would likely need to tune the bitrate and such
[19:27:10] tgm4883: you could do it all manually via HTTP requests if you wanted to
[19:27:18] tgm4883: then play it via VLC
[19:27:30] tgm4883: but it would be nicer to have some sort of frontend
