[03:19:33] hmm: hi can anyone help me figure out how to transcode recordings to mp4 instead of mpeg2? I have myth 0.26 installed. Under the mythtv-setup: recording profile I see two profile groups Ceton Recorder and Transcoder. I can't change any settings under the Ceton Recorder profile but I can under Transcoder which I already changed to mp4.
[03:19:57] Demon_Fox: that is a container
[03:20:05] Demon_Fox: and if you mean mpeg4
[03:20:10] Demon_Fox: which one?
[03:20:15] Demon_Fox: xvid or h.264?
[03:20:30] hmm: I dunno I just clicked on the option for mp4. I assumed mythtv already had a codec?\
[03:20:31] Demon_Fox: I mean
[03:20:45] hmm: Do I need to download a package?
[03:20:48] Demon_Fox: there is h.263 and h.264
[03:21:06] Demon_Fox: How fast is your computer?
[03:21:13] hmm: AMD A10.
[03:21:18] hmm: Is that fast enough?
[03:21:20] Demon_Fox: clock?
[03:21:26] hmm: default clock speed
[03:21:40] Demon_Fox: It ranges from 1.6Ghz to 3.2Ghz
[03:21:46] hmm: oh.. 3.2
[03:21:49] Demon_Fox: One being twice as fast as the other
[03:21:57] tlhiv_laptop_ (tlhiv_laptop_!~foo@c-68-35-204-183.hsd1.al.comcast.net) has quit (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
[03:21:57] hmm: wait 4.2ghz
[03:22:02] Demon_Fox: overclocked?
[03:22:18] hmm: I think it might be... I got the A10 5800K
[03:22:24] hmm: 4.2 ghz with max turbo
[03:22:31] Demon_Fox: If you want h.264 which is supposed to be half the size of mpeg2
[03:22:55] hmm: yes. that's what I want. I don't intend to keep any of the recordings
[03:22:57] Demon_Fox: hmm, that applies on to one core
[03:23:03] wagnerrp: hmm: you don't want to transcode to mp4 using mythtranscode
[03:23:15] hmm: oh? what do I use to transcode?
[03:23:21] DrTodd (DrTodd!~chatzilla@c-67-170-173-50.hsd1.wa.comcast.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[03:23:22] wagnerrp: anything it outputs will be MP4ASP in a .nuv container
[03:23:27] Demon_Fox: I use ffmpeg
[03:23:32] Demon_Fox: something like
[03:23:40] wagnerrp: to be honest, you don't want to transcode at all, unless you're doing it for use on an embedded dddddevice
[03:23:43] wagnerrp: like a phone
[03:24:13] DrTodd: hi all....I'm having trouble getting listing for a channel...can anybody help?
[03:24:19] wagnerrp: just use the lossless mpeg2 -> mpeg2 clipping
[03:24:24] hmm: Hmm... well I wanted to transcode, so that when I watch videos over the network, it could fast forward faster.. not sure if that happens... but I assume there's less data that needs to be transfered.
[03:24:32] wagnerrp: and if you're out of storage, buy more storage
[03:24:45] Demon_Fox: ffmpeg -i input.mpg -acodec faac -ab 128k -scodec copy -vcodec libx264 -preset veryslow -profile high -tune film output.mkv
[03:24:47] hmm: I am only using a 100mbit eithernet
[03:24:51] Demon_Fox: I get around 10fps
[03:24:52] wagnerrp: if you're watching videos over the network, you're talking about content that's going to be 16Mbps at peak
[03:25:18] wagnerrp: wired network is not your bottleneck on broadcast television
[03:26:07] hmm: Hmm.. ok... so it would take too long to convert to h264?
[03:26:07] Demon_Fox: That 10fps is for 480p, like on dvd
[03:26:19] Demon_Fox: I would say so
[03:26:23] wagnerrp: right, HD transcoding is _very_ slow
[03:26:28] hmm: wow.... didn't realize it was that slow
[03:26:29] [R]: that's what she said
[03:26:46] Demon_Fox: xvid is faster though
[03:26:56] wagnerrp: sufficiently slow that you're not saving yourself much in reduced storage costs compared to the increased electrical usage needed to transcode the content
[03:27:08] hmm: is xvid ugly compared to h264?
[03:27:17] Demon_Fox: larger files
[03:27:24] Demon_Fox: faster encoding
[03:27:27] wagnerrp: it is much less efficient
[03:27:43] wagnerrp: MPEG4ASP (xvid) is only modestly more efficient than MPEG2
[03:27:51] wagnerrp: h264 is usually 2–3x more efficient
[03:28:07] Demon_Fox: h.264 is supposed to be half the size of mpeg2
[03:28:21] Demon_Fox: Unless you use a hardware encoder
[03:28:35] hmm: I see... I always thought h.264 and xvid files were 1/4 the size of mpeg2
[03:28:36] Demon_Fox: then it will be larger, usually.
[03:28:50] Demon_Fox: animations they dominate mpeg2
[03:28:52] wagnerrp: that doesn't mean they're encoded by someone who knows what they're doing
[03:28:54] Demon_Fox: I mean
[03:28:59] Demon_Fox: on animations they dominate mpeg2
[03:29:08] wagnerrp: the drop the resolution, and compromise quality
[03:30:11] hmm: how big is a mpeg2 file supposed to be? On verizon fios I recorded about 1:30h of discovery channel stuff and it took about 10gigs.. is that normal?
[03:30:17] Demon_Fox: perhaps if you go from yuv444 to yuv420 and use x264
[03:30:34] wagnerrp: that's about right... digital recordings are typically 6–7GB/hr
[03:30:41] Demon_Fox: hmm, I would strip out commercials which saves 20% of space on average
[03:30:43] wagnerrp: and no one uses yuv444
[03:30:58] wagnerrp: stripping commercials (and converting to a PS) saves 35–40%
[03:31:04] hmm: oh.. is there a setting to automatically get rid of commericals while recording?
[03:31:14] Demon_Fox: no, only after
[03:31:24] wagnerrp: no, you must go into edit mode, make a cut list, and perform a lossless mpeg2 -> mpeg2 transcode
[03:31:34] hmm: ohh I see... does it work well enough such that it doesn't accidently cut off material?
[03:32:06] Demon_Fox: wagnerrp, It is having trouble finding my directories for storage
[03:32:18] wagnerrp: by "it", you mean "you"... you define the cutlist it uses for clipping
[03:32:27] Demon_Fox: then it says using the hard coded default of /mnt/store
[03:32:39] Demon_Fox: hmm, There is an automatic way, but this way is faster
[03:32:49] hmm: oh.. so I have to define the cut points, meaning I have to actually watch the thing?
[03:33:05] Demon_Fox: wagnerrp, then I go into there and set /mnt/store and it still can't it.
[03:33:21] wagnerrp: hmm: you can usually do it in about 3–4 minutes for an hour long show in edit mode
[03:33:21] Demon_Fox: hmm, You can skip through it
[03:33:37] wagnerrp: Demon_Fox: means you haven't yet defined anything for that host in mythtv-setup
[03:33:46] Demon_Fox: wagnerrp, I did
[03:33:57] wagnerrp: you ran mythtv-setup, on that machine?
[03:33:59] Demon_Fox: wagnerrp, How can I grab the configuration to show you?
[03:34:01] Demon_Fox: I did
[03:34:26] wagnerrp: open mysql, "select * from storagegroup;"... pastebin the outpit
[03:34:43] hmm: ok.. thanks for the tips...
[03:35:09] hmm: another stupid question, when you delete using the frontend, does it delete the files right away or does it need to enter a queue or something?
[03:35:31] wagnerrp: it queues it up for the autoexpirer
[03:35:38] wagnerrp: which will clear it the next time it runs
[03:35:46] wagnerrp: it runs at minimum every 15 minutes
[03:35:48] hmm: when does the auto expire kick in? after there's no room?
[03:36:02] wagnerrp: it will run faster if you are actively recording
[03:36:09] Demon_Fox: wagnerrp, hold on, I set some kind of password
[03:37:02] hmm: I set it to delete several hours ago, but I still see all the videos in the directory.
[03:38:48] Demon_Fox: wagnerrp, Do you know where the config file for mysql is, so I get the password?
[03:38:58] wagnerrp: ~/.mythtv/config.xml
[03:38:59] DrTodd: anybody available to help with listings problem?
[03:39:11] Demon_Fox: oh I will just can't it then
[03:39:29] wagnerrp: DrTodd: can't help until you ask a specific question
[03:42:00] wagnerrp: DrTodd: chances are all your old analog channels will not be available over digital cable
[03:42:11] wagnerrp: they will be encrypted, and inaccessible without a cable box
[03:42:30] Demon_Fox: wagnerrp, it says no database selected
[03:42:44] wagnerrp: with comcast, you can get a cablecard tuner, rent a cablecard from comcast, and use that to get access to anything short of the premium channels
[03:42:53] wagnerrp: Demon_Fox: the database will be defined in that file
[03:43:03] wagnerrp: probably mythconverg, run "use mythconverg;"
[03:43:04] DrTodd: the basic cable channels are unencrypted
[03:43:43] Demon_Fox: darkstarbyte will post the contents of config.xml on pastebin

[03:56:23] darkstarbyte: mythbackend
[03:57:02] wagnerrp: and the machine you're running this on is named 'darkstar'?
[03:57:09] darkstarbyte: yes
[03:57:16] darkstarbyte: hence the nick
[04:04:39] darkstarbyte: then what?
[04:05:09] wagnerrp: don't know
[04:05:23] wagnerrp: assuming you're running mythbackend with that same config file, meaning it's hitting the same database
[04:05:29] darkstarbyte: Am I supposed to run with the init file instead?
[04:05:30] wagnerrp: actually...
[04:05:38] wagnerrp: select distinct hostname from settings;
[04:06:13] darkstarbyte: http://dpaste.com/845051/
[04:07:53] darkstarbyte: I might need to downgrade my OS.

[04:14:10] Demon_Fox: I will grab those
[04:14:32] wagnerrp: i mean as long as the user you're running mythbackend as has them, i can't think of anything else

[04:15:39] darkstarbyte: I am.

[16:28:59] bsilvereagle: mythweb doesn't see any frontends w/ remote control abilities. That thread insinuates that it's because the backend can't resolve the frontend's hostname.
[16:29:15] bsilvereagle: I guess the last post of that thread

[16:42:46] bsilvereagle: so what I'm saying won't work?
[16:43:09] sphery: but don't go editing it directly... if you have misconfigured IP addresses, change them properly with mythtv-setup or mythfrontend -p
[16:43:23] wagnerrp: sphery: does it do that for frontends as well?
[16:43:37] sphery: pretty sure we've fixed all the places where it was using hostname

[16:44:17] wagnerrp: if it's a combo fe/be, it should be configured
[16:44:23] sphery: (i.e. set it up as if it were a remote backend--meaning run mythtv-setup, and set only the General settings--for it to work)
[16:44:51] sphery: don't set SGs or Capture Cards or Video Sources or Input Configuration, and don't run mythbackend

[21:04:39] lordking: Yepp, its here
[21:04:58] bill6502: Then you don't need to work with SystemV runlevels. Upstart uses that .conf file. If you added links under /etc/rc?.d, I'd take them out.
[21:05:52] lordking: Okay, thanks for that. I'll take them out again. But still – why wouldn't mythbackend start?
[21:05:56] bill6502: To start it, I use: sudo start mythtv-backend
[21:06:11] lordking: Yeah, that works as well
[21:06:27] lordking: But why wouldn't the backend start automatically after bootup?
[21:07:42] bill6502: Don't know. Mine does. Note that in that .conf there is a pre-start section. If it fails, the backend won't start.
[21:08:04] bill6502: There would likely be information in /var/log/syslog for failures.

[21:09:04] lordking: Okay... in the prestart section mysql is being stared. Okay. I'll take a look into that. syslog hasn't shown any backend errors, but maybe I'll find mysql errors
[21:11:12] bill6502: Also note near the top of that file: start on (local-filesystems and net-device-up IFACE!=lo ..., your network has to be up.
[21:11:39] lordking: No mysql errors in syslog
[21:11:55] lordking: Ah okay... and how would I know if that is the case?
[21:11:58] lordking: Syslog again?

[21:13:21] bill6502: Hmmm, not sure what to do without any logging. You can add a line right after: pre-start script in the .conf. For example: echo "The pre-start started" >> /tmp/pre-start-started and
[21:13:29] bill6502: then check to see if the file is there.
[21:13:35] lordking: Wait. The PC has an interface, but is not connected. Is that a problem?

[21:14:45] bill6502: lordking: Very likely. What do you get when you type ifconfig (pastebin please.)
[21:18:34] bill6502: lordking: Or, if you suspect a network problem, TEMPORARILY change the test from " and net-device-up IFACE!=lo" to " and net-device-up IFACE=lo"
[21:20:06] lordking: bill6502: okay let me just try that
