[12:57:34] Finswimmer: my config.xml in /home/mythtv-user/.mythtv is empty

So, I populate the schedulesdirect source with all of the channels for the HD box, tie it to two different source IDs, then use the channel editor in mythtv-setup to remove the HD channels from the SD source ID. Finally, modify the call
[19:02:04] neufeld_AFK: parameters to mythfilldatabase, adding --remove-new-channels. Result: HD+SD channels are on source ID 3, which the HD-PVR sees, and SD channels are on source ID 2, for a PVR-500.

[22:40:29] stuartm: could be a permissions problem, are you running mythbackend as the same user you configured with?

[22:44:30] justinh: it's like... OUCH
[22:45:14] justinh: shoulda just put a svideo out card in my backend & run cables to the livingroom.. but then I didn't know the backend would have to move downstairs
[22:45:44] justinh: and when we DO get HD.. we won't even need a frontend machine. cos it'll be the backend
[22:47:37] justinh: could be worse I suppose. If I'd stuck with the xbox we'd need to wear headphones to hear the TV audio over the fan noise by now
[22:49:37] stuartm: when I set out to buy hardware for my production box I specced out something that provided both S-Video but which could also do HD for when I upgraded the TV – vdpau didn't exist back then but with real luck the hardware I settled on was the absolute minimum requirement for vdpau
[22:51:11] stuartm: except for a faulty dvd-rom and a more efficient psu I've not had to change anything else for a few years now, but it's much harder to do that these days, not much hardware that has a foot in both the past/future any more

[23:19:28] annie: I also have a PCI compro-tv PCI card that I could install
[23:20:12] justinh: no capturing digital cable with that though
[23:20:13] stuartm: annie: the guys in #linuxtv could advise, if anyone is awake over there
[23:20:53] annie: justinh no capturing digital cable with which one?
[23:21:05] justinh: the compro-tv one
[23:21:06] annie: or both?

[23:22:03] wagnerrp: your cable box is outputting analog video, not digital
[23:22:08] annie: really?
[23:22:10] stuartm: well even the eyetv is problematic, since I believe most American cable companies disable component output for all but basic channels
[23:22:28] annie: funny our cable provider insists it's digital?
[23:22:29] wagnerrp: the only digital output on your cable box would be HDMI, and you cannot capture that anywhere (due to HDCP)
[23:22:33] ** stuartm leaves it to the expert **
[23:22:42] wagnerrp: the cable box RECEIVES digital, but it OUTPUTS analog
[23:22:52] wagnerrp: and you are capturing the output of the cable box
[23:22:57] annie: So essentially its a convertor
[23:23:16] wagnerrp: if you want to consider it in that way
[23:23:39] annie: What's the correct way to consider it?
[23:23:46] wagnerrp: a digital tuner
[23:24:13] wagnerrp: receives and decrypts digital cable, according to what your subscription allows
[23:24:47] wagnerrp: and then outputs over (digital) HDMI, (analog) component, (analog) svideo, or (analog) modulated RF
[23:24:48] annie: Precisely which seems to me convertor would be synonymous but the real point is how do I use my Linux box as a PVR?

[23:25:57] wagnerrp: bleh... analog capture it is then....

[23:26:05] wagnerrp: HD or SD?
[23:26:33] annie: I'm very unhappy with them but the only option here and they know it. Anyway I need at times to capture both.
[23:26:49] wagnerrp: well if something can capture HD, it can capture SD as well
[23:27:17] wagnerrp: as mentioned earlier, the only known option for HD is the hauppauge HDPVR
[23:27:34] wagnerrp: no idea if the EyeTV HD can be used in mythtv or linux, but im guessing not
[23:27:44] justinh: Toast: mine *wants* to help now. damn kid.. growing up too fast already. he wakes in the middle of the night & changes his own training pants now

[23:30:47] clever: sounds right
[23:30:53] Toast: stuartm: Think I've found it. User mythtv was not in group video, so couldn't see the tuner.
[23:31:20] wagnerrp: annie: if standard definition is acceptable, your options get much cheaper and more plentiful
[23:31:32] wagnerrp: but you'll still want to look for some kind of encoder card

[23:35:17] Shadow__X: oh, i didnt realize time warner doesnt support cable card
[23:35:29] wagnerrp: no, cablecard is required by law to support cablecard
[23:35:36] wagnerrp: erm... time warner
[23:35:38] justinh: Toast: already doing preschool half day every weekday
[23:35:40] annie: Actually they do and they don't.
[23:35:44] wagnerrp: they must
[23:35:51] annie: Yes that's my point
[23:35:51] wagnerrp: the issue is that everything is marked as copy protected
[23:36:03] annie: Precisely
[23:36:09] wagnerrp: meaning unlicensed software like mythtv or elegato is unable to capture anything
[23:36:11] Shadow__X: ah i gotcha
[23:36:17] annie: they make it unusable same as with their firewire and usb ports
[23:36:33] wagnerrp: as far as i know, windows media center is the only HTPC software licensed by cable labs
[23:36:40] Shadow__X: yeah they turning the copy protection flags on everything makes something like cablecard on mythtv useless
[23:36:41] annie: LOL
[23:37:24] wagnerrp: i believe other windows applications can tap into windows media center to support copy protected recordings, but they basically just provide their own frontend on top of WMC's recording mechanisms
[23:37:43] Toast: Why don't you rent a co-lo space in the UK, pay your TV licence and locate your backend in England? Far better TV options here.
[23:37:52] wagnerrp: bandwidth?
[23:38:07] annie: Actually I have a proxy in the UK that I occasionally stream TV from LOL
[23:38:35] wagnerrp: i might record 200GB-300GB/mo of TV
[23:38:49] wagnerrp: that's a hell of an internet bill
[23:39:38] annie: Well I'm not capped but I'm only 15mbps down and I don't record anything on a 200to 300 gb scale. More like maybe 50g on a big month
[23:40:07] wagnerrp: it does help that you're recompressing to H264 in that little box
[23:40:31] wagnerrp: my recordings are going to be 6–7GB/hr
[23:40:41] annie: From reading here on the Hauppage HD PVR it seems to be doing about the same.
[23:41:10] annie: and it's also component video which is the hookup I have now and dislike what is wrong with these people they don't add a HDMI port?
[23:41:19] wagnerrp: yeah, the output from your thing, or the HDPVR, is likely to be closer to 4GB/hr
[23:41:30] wagnerrp: because an HDMI port would be worthless
[23:41:38] annie: That sounds about right. (4GB/hr)
[23:41:44] wagnerrp: the HDMI port is encrypted with HDCP
[23:41:53] wagnerrp: which they are not authorized to capture and decrypt
[23:41:56] annie: Even after the cable box?
[23:42:35] wagnerrp: the cable box decrypts the QAM signal using the cablecard, decodes and renders the video, and then encrypts the raw video stream going out over HDMI
[23:42:58] wagnerrp: cablecard is a DRM scheme
[23:43:08] wagnerrp: they can't let you get your grubby hands on that digital signal
[23:43:48] wagnerrp: same thing with windows media center, the recordings remain encrypted on disk, encrypted all the way through processing, and sent encrypted to the tv

[23:45:43] Shadow__X: its not like people are paying to access content or antyhing

[23:53:14] Toast: The most anoying thing about retuning is all the Channel found to be in conflict with other channels renumbering. At least I only have 22 this time.
[23:54:05] wagnerrp: annie: the latest elgato offering IS just a rebadged silicon dust box
[23:54:26] annie: That's what it looked like! Thanks for confirming
[23:54:45] wagnerrp: also, the hauppauge DCR-2650 is internally identical to the HDHomeRun Prime
[23:55:12] wagnerrp: they just deactivate one of the tuners, and solder on a USB device port in place of the ethernet and USB host port
[23:55:49] annie: Well I'm going to look deeper into the SiliconDust offering.
[23:56:03] wagnerrp: it will be of limited use
[23:56:09] annie: ?
[23:56:21] wagnerrp: the standard version is just an unencrypted digital tuner... meaning broadcast channels, or unencrypted QAM
[23:56:31] wagnerrp: the HDHR Prime is a cablecard tuner... useless for time warner
[23:57:19] wagnerrp: if most of what you record is off network tv, then it would work fine... apparently someone was selling them for $50 yesterday
[23:57:28] Toast: Yay, I have TV :)
[23:58:08] annie: Most of what I record is TCM the old movies from the '30s. But occasionally I record some HD stuff.
[23:58:12] annie: Congrats Toast.
[23:58:43] annie: wagnerrp what about moving the cable card from the TWC box?
[23:58:45] Shadow__X: wagnerrp: link?
[23:59:08] annie: I've often wondered about that but never knew anyone savvy enough about this stuff to ask
[23:59:33] wagnerrp: the cablecard is statically tied to a single device
[23:59:47] wagnerrp: you *could* remove the cablecard from the TW cable box, and put it in a cablecard tuner
[23:59:57] annie: That is what I was wondering about.
