[02:44:35] jst_: Hey, all. About to move some parts between my systems (gaming rig is getting an upgrade, so its components are going to my mythbackend/frontend box). The motherbaord has an AMD 785G chipset. Should this be good enough to decode 1080p without a sweat?
[02:45:16] wagnerrp: chances are the CPU is plenty fine
[02:45:26] wagnerrp: but the graphics chip comes up wanting
[02:45:59] jst_: So... the CPU will be bogged down with GPU is decoding?

[02:46:22] jst_: I've only used NVIDIA for as long as I can remember... Gonna miss VDPAU. :(
[02:46:40] wagnerrp: ATI has a very poor track record
[02:46:46] wagnerrp: and AMD has been slow to correct that
[02:46:53] jst_: I guess I could give it a try, and if it's too demanding on my system, throw in an NVIDIA card.

[10:16:00] EvilGuru: stuartm: No, but I do have some high activity databases on SSDs (MySQL, 80–90 write queries a second) and have no concerns
[10:21:56] stuartm: k, weighing up my options, I'm thinking of picking up a cheap Sandisk SSD, mostly because it's in a sale ...
[10:22:40] stuartm: if I don't put the DB on it that means I still need an HDD for the DB which can't also be used for recording
[10:22:59] EvilGuru: Why do you need the DB on its own drive?
[10:30:14] stuartm: we've always recommended keeping the DB on a different drive to recordings, a lot of low speed drives can't cope with the IO of simultaneous db and recording writes
[10:30:56] stuartm: DB on the same drive as video/photos/music isn't a problem
[10:32:07] stuartm: while recording we're also writing the seektable and still doing scheduling etc, so multiple recordings to the same drive + DB is a pretty heavy workload
[10:34:37] stuartm: having the DB on the SSD would mean faster scheduling which is good, I just want to get ~3 years from the SSD

[12:02:28] stuartm: yeah, you aren't guarenteed to have problems, but at the same time if I can avoid it then it saves possible hassle later on with me potentially having damaged recordings/corrupted DBs and needing to repartition and move stuff around

[12:49:25] sphery: and you're far less likely to have problems if you have lots of file systems (in addition to the one(s) on that drive) relative to your contiguous recordings count and use a proper storage scheduler (versus one that is likely to put a bunch of same-time recordings on the same-as-DB-data file system)

[13:01:34] sphery: stuartm: fwiw, if you feel you can handle reading some mythtv-users mailing list posts, there was a discussion of DB data on SSD at http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/508621#508621 (it was basically the same result, too--people said it shouldn't be an issue with modern SSD lifetimes and wear leveling)
[13:02:35] johnf1911 (johnf1911!~johnf@199.231.209.206) has joined #mythtv-users
[13:03:40] stuartm: sphery: that's what I expected tbh, despite not owning a 'proper' SSD I've always said that people were overreacting about the 'wear' issue since even older devices had mtbf that were longer than most people would be using the same hardware
[13:04:14] stuartm: still, it seemed prudent just to double check someone's real world experience before buying
[13:04:41] sphery: yeah, agreed
[13:05:29] sphery: I actually read that thread rather closely because I had similar feelings and no actual information/experience to base it on
[13:05:48] sphery: many of them did recommend putting scratch/temp space elsewhere--such as a ram disk, though
[13:06:13] sphery: but even with, the numbers didn't look too bad for wear
[13:06:20] EvilGuru: sphery: I think newer distros are making /tmp in memory nowadays
[13:06:34] stuartm: aye they default to that
[13:06:47] EvilGuru: What a lot of people forget is that Windows has a feature which allows you to use a USB stick as fast swap
[13:07:15] EvilGuru: And is that almost a worst case from a wear perspective, yet I have been few complaints
[13:22:18] stuartm: so 64GB SSD for £37, which is pretty cheap compared to what they cost this time last year
[13:22:49] stuartm: and more than large enough than for my needs

[15:43:47] darkdrgn2k: I got 3 harddrives with folder called Movies, is there anyway i can mount them or link or somethign into the same mount point.. so that when myth looks ath them, and sees movies, it seels all the movies in all 3 drives?
[15:45:43] wagnerrp: you currently have them something like... /disk1/video/Movies, /disk2/video/Movies, /disk3/video/Movies ?
[15:47:22] wagnerrp: darkdrgn2k: ^^^^
[15:48:10] darkdrgn2k: yes
[15:48:41] wagnerrp: then add the three folders to mythtv-setup... /disk1/video, /disk2/video, /disk3/video
[15:49:11] darkdrgn2k: hmmmmm sounds logical.. why didt i think of that
[15:49:18] darkdrgn2k: ugh i cant wait till mythsetup is webized
[15:49:29] darkdrgn2k: i hate launching vnc for doing that :-P
[15:49:44] wagnerrp: so just redirect mythtv-setup to your local x server, and skip vnc

[20:36:22] wagnerrp: just paste whatever link it provides in here
[20:36:27] thomasbomb: For some reason I can't type the | symbol, can I use a file?
[20:36:57] wagnerrp: you could dump to a file, and then run "pastebinit < file.txt"
[20:37:17] wagnerrp: or you could copy/paste the command above
[20:37:40] thomasbomb: This is a different system
[20:37:58] wagnerrp: so?
[20:38:15] awalls: two keyboards
[20:38:21] thomasbomb: I can't copy and paste then...
[20:38:25] wagnerrp: you can use ssh to access the terminal on the other system, its not like you have to type all this directly onto the local terminal
[20:38:38] awalls: air gap?
[20:39:07] thomasbomb: Pastebinit says "THIS API HAS BEEN DISABLED..."
[20:39:22] wagnerrp: huh, i figured they would have fixed that by now...
[20:39:51] thomasbomb: I'll try using ssh
[20:39:59] wagnerrp: use fpaste or something then...
[20:40:15] wagnerrp: 'pastebinit -b http://fpaste.prg < file.txt'
[20:40:25] wagnerrp: that would be '.org'
[20:44:12] thomasbomb: http://fpaste.org/nErk
[20:44:41] ** awalls looks **
[20:45:00] wagnerrp: yep, unable to open firmware
[20:45:45] wagnerrp: and 2.6.32... yikes
[20:45:52] awalls: Firmware files are missing, have wrong permissions, or arre in the wrong directory
[20:46:24] thomasbomb: What's wrong with 2.6.32?
[20:46:44] awalls: IMO nothing for stable production setups.
[20:47:18] awalls: But no one is going to backport security updates for you
[20:47:46] ** awalls rarely updates systems that his wife or kids use for production tasks **
[20:48:02] wagnerrp: coming up on almost three years, i actually thought it was older than that
[20:48:56] wagnerrp: anyway, support for the 2.6.32 series lapsed march this year
[20:49:05] thomasbomb: I didn't know it was old... Hmm
[20:49:10] wagnerrp: kernel.org support, that is
[20:49:25] Arden: XML::SAX::Base seems to be not removable anyone have any luck removing the package
[20:50:34] thomasbomb: I guess I'll find a newer version of debian
[20:50:54] thomasbomb: Wait is there a newer version?
[20:50:55] wagnerrp: if its working for you, dont bother
[20:50:59] awalls: You might want to find the CX23416 firmware files first, and check your hardware.
[20:51:17] wagnerrp: i dont think there have been any significant changes in the IVTV drivers since... 2.6.24?
[20:51:17] awalls: http://dl.ivtvdriver.org
[20:51:53] awalls: No. Biggest changes were with ivtv-fb driver and making the decoder and firmware load more robust.
[20:52:06] awalls: That's mostly PVR-350 only.
[20:52:28] awalls: I did just submit a PULL request today for the ivtv-alsa driver.
[20:53:06] thomasbomb: NOTE: the ivtv driver has been merged with kernel 2.6.22. This means that the ivtv-1.0.x archives no longer contain the ivtv driver proper, only tools, utilities and the ivtvfb and saa717x drivers (which are not yet part of the kernel).
[20:53:06] awalls: Soon one can capture PCM audio from CX23416 based boards using ALSA instead of /dev/video24
[20:53:44] thomasbomb: What exactly does that mean?
[20:53:47] awalls: http://dl.ivtvdriver.org/ivtv/firmware/
[20:54:16] awalls: It means ivtv was out of kernel long ago, but is no longer
[20:54:33] thomasbomb: But the firmware isn't built in?
[20:54:44] thomasbomb: Or something is just wrong with mine for some reason
[20:54:48] awalls: Just grab the latest ivtv firmware bundle and put it in place.
[20:54:51] wagnerrp: no, it gets loaded when the driver loads
[20:55:00] wagnerrp: the driver pushes it into the card
[20:55:10] awalls: Well, your distro should provide a package with the firmware in it.
[20:55:23] awalls: I guess with debian you use apt-get ?
[20:55:44] thomasbomb: That's what I've been using... What am I supposed to get?
[20:56:24] awalls: BTW, dl.ivtvdriver.org webserver has an annoying habit of gzipping archives twice (if you get the firmware from there).
[20:56:47] awalls: I dunno, I use Fedora, RHEL and SL myself.
[20:57:12] awalls: try for a package named ivtv-firmware or something similar
[20:57:16] thomasbomb: So I have to download the ivtv-firmware.tar.gz?
[20:57:30] thomasbomb: Then unzip it?
[20:58:12] awalls: You can do that. You'll probably have to rename it ivtv-firmware.tar.gz.gz and then gunzip it twice (due to the stupid webserver).
[20:58:38] awalls: They go in /lib/firmware in most distros.
[20:58:53] awalls: Make sure they are owned by root:root and readable by root
[20:59:08] awalls: (or read able by all)
[20:59:11] wagnerrp: thomasbomb: follow up from my previous kernel version comment, i would actually recommend NOT upgrading until your next hardware refresh
[20:59:12] SteveGoodey (SteveGoodey!~steve@host86-140-215-72.range86-140.btcentralplus.com) has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[21:00:03] thomasbomb: Why do you say that? Because I'd be reinstalling anyway?
[21:00:09] wagnerrp: chances are new bugs for an old K6–2 are going to creep in to newer kernels
[21:00:33] wagnerrp: with hardly anyone running it, new bugs go largely unnoticed
[21:00:56] thomasbomb: awalls so i unzip it (twice) into /lib/firmware?
[21:01:00] wagnerrp: old hardware drivers are subject to "code rot"
[21:01:13] awalls: Yeah.
[21:01:36] awalls: Hopefully that's where debian's version of udev looks for firmware files.
[21:02:08] awalls: Un tar it too, of course

[21:05:23] awalls: Regarding new kernel and old hardware: Linux kernel PCI chipset quirks that someone has added usually bite me.
[21:05:50] awalls: Someone has some flaky hardware and they blame it on the PCI chipset, then submit a hokey patch that gets included in the kernel.
[21:06:16] EvilGuru: awalls: There are a lot of really badly broken PCI chipsets
[21:06:25] EvilGuru: Or nowadays, PCIe <=> PCI bridge chips
[21:06:26] awalls: Their patch then proceeds to break on my old hardware or tank performance.
[21:06:36] awalls: EvilGuru: Yes, no doubt.
[21:07:22] awalls: But a quirk for my chipset on this machine disbale MSI, yet I have never had a problem with MSI on my hardware.
[21:07:49] awalls: So either I never trigger the chipset bug, or the assumed root cause is wrong.
