[07:27:36] adamclose: ugh ... is there any reason, aside from file system permissions, that mythtv would say "Failed to open the card" when scanning for channels?
[07:30:38] adamclose: i'm attempting to get a ceton infinitv 4 pcie working (yeah, i know it should've been the hdhomerun or whatever it is); however, this is the hand I was dealt. (a friend purchased it so he could get rid of his dvr services from the cable company.)
[07:30:39] wagnerrp: something else already has the card open
[07:30:59] wagnerrp: ceton... i dont think we support scanning from those
[07:31:04] wagnerrp: just download a lineup from schedules direct
[07:31:37] adamclose: Module Size Used by
[07:31:39] adamclose: ctn91xx 49490 0
[07:32:25] wagnerrp: the ceton tuners are not a local tuner per se
[07:32:34] adamclose: i've also tried catting the device itself redirected to a file for debugging purposes; it gives me a zero length file.
[07:32:38] wagnerrp: they are their own completely independent computer system
[07:32:41] wagnerrp: with an internal network
[07:32:46] wagnerrp: and mythtv connects to them over the network
[07:34:07] adamclose: that's my understanding
[07:34:27] wagnerrp: meaning file permissions wouldnt come into play at all
[07:34:35] wagnerrp: as there are no files that need permission
[07:34:41] wagnerrp: just basic network socket access
[07:34:42] adamclose: ah, touche.
[07:35:09] wagnerrp: as i understand it, mythtv does not use whatever device nodes those drivers create
[07:35:35] adamclose: right, right ... so it's a problem with the card itself/underlying system setup issues.

[07:39:44] wagnerrp: Beirdo: you about?
[07:40:31] adamclose: stevegoodey; i looked at that a while back when i was having other issues, perhaps it will be of more use when i get infront of the machine again ... the specific section about the device and RTP may be what i need.
[07:40:41] wagnerrp: nevermind, figured it out

[08:43:26] adamclose: i'm ssh'd into the box ... does mythfilldatabase often take hours, or? i saw something online about switching from innodb to myisam and it has worked on a previous installation (i've since reinstalled)
[08:43:58] adamclose: any serious drawbacks to doing such?
[08:44:48] wagnerrp: everything is already forced to myisam in the schema
[08:45:03] wagnerrp: the issue is that mysql5.5 now defaults to innodb
[08:45:12] adamclose: ah, okay
[08:45:26] wagnerrp: and certain things dealing with the guide data use temporary tables that as such now default to innodb
[08:45:51] wagnerrp: and the built in tuning parameters for innodb are complete garbage
[08:45:59] adamclose: hehe
[08:46:06] wagnerrp: meaning the performance dealing with those temporary tables is similarly complete garbage
[08:46:13] adamclose: gotta love when you get blamed for someone else's faults.
[08:46:36] wagnerrp: ideally, the databases would all be well tunes, and everything world work wonderfully
[08:46:40] wagnerrp: *tuned
[08:46:47] adamclose: always.
[08:46:54] adamclose: "the world ain't perfect."
[08:46:56] wagnerrp: but... thats not going to happen until such time as mythtv has direct control over the database server
[08:47:02] wagnerrp: so the next best option is to force myisam
[08:47:19] wagnerrp: which i believe the current versions of the code does
[08:47:48] wagnerrp: controlling the database server is a future target
[08:48:03] wagnerrp: switching from a shared mysql server, to an embedded one built into the master backend
[08:49:01] adamclose: won't that be a ... to maintain?
[08:49:19] wagnerrp: how so?
[08:49:41] wagnerrp: embedded mysql, not some custom database server
[08:49:48] adamclose: well, if it's something as simple as patching the default mysql ".cnf" file, that seems easy, but if it's actually changing code...
[08:50:08] wagnerrp: basically, instead of connecting to some file or network socket, it would be an internal connection
[08:50:51] wagnerrp: mysql would provide the database, but it would be built into mythbackend, rather than running in mysqld
[08:51:37] adamclose: are there significant advantages to doing that? aside from minor tuning here and there, which could likely be achieved through patches...
[08:52:18] DaveQB (DaveQB!~david@ppp255-134.static.internode.on.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[08:52:18] adamclose: i guess i don't understand the reasoning behind such (not that i should) ... it just seems like a lot of extra work.
[08:52:35] wagnerrp: the advantages are there would be no initial database setup, no need for users to configure a database server or authentication, proper tuning parameters, ability to sanitize all inputs to the database, ability to completely block all access to allow safe recovery from corruption
[08:53:22] wagnerrp: downsides are the need for significant expansions to the internal protocol to replace everything remote frontends and slave backends do with direct sql queries
[08:53:31] DaveQB: What is the best practice for replacing a disk in a storage group? I am thinking to sync the data over with rsync and mount at the same location. Would changing the mount point break information in the DB?
[08:53:56] wagnerrp: as well as the need for plugin support for the backend, so plugins can have custom tables and such
[08:54:10] adamclose: who'da thunk tv was so important? *grin*
[08:54:12] wagnerrp: daveqb: add the new drive, add the new folder on the new drive to the storage group
[08:54:15] wagnerrp: done....
[08:54:18] adamclose: kidding.
[08:54:42] wagnerrp: adamclose: basically... its a whole bunch of stuff that make mythtv more of a turnkey solution
[08:54:43] DaveQB: wagnerrp: The issue is I need to replace a failing disk though and would like not to lose the recordings on it.
[08:54:53] DaveQB: wagnerrp: Thanks for the response though.
[08:55:06] wagnerrp: daveqb: add the new disk, add a new entry to point to the new disk in mythtv-setup
[08:55:10] wagnerrp: thats all there is to it
[08:55:31] DaveQB: wagnerrp: But I need to sync the recordings over to the new disk though
[08:55:39] wagnerrp: so just move them over
[08:55:47] wagnerrp: open up a terminal, and use 'mv'
[08:55:50] DaveQB: wagnerrp: The current disk is having hardware issues, I think it is runing our of spare sectors
[08:56:21] wagnerrp: mythtv does not record the absolute path of a file it records
[08:56:29] wagnerrp: it only records the hostname and storage group
[08:56:32] DaveQB: wagnerrp: I use mount points to define the disk so easier maintenance......
[08:56:39] adamclose: wagner; going for turnkey makes sense ... but what about designing an installation solution to the problem instead of relying on an integrated db? (I guess, to me, it makes sense to design a proper "mysql mythtv script" which cleans out the unnecessary garbage, sets the tuning parameters, and adds the necessary users/security rather than having to constantly update a backend integrated db.
[08:56:39] DaveQB: wagnerrp: Ahhh exactly what I was after
[08:56:48] DaveQB: So it will search all paths in the storage group for the file?
[08:56:48] wagnerrp: when you want to access a recording, it searches through all the directories defined for that storage group
[08:56:52] wagnerrp: correct
[08:57:14] DaveQB: wagnerrp: That is brilliant fore-sight by the devs!
[08:57:16] wagnerrp: adamclose: because its not up to us to manage other projects
[08:57:27] adamclose: eh, nm ... i don't have much experience with mythtv; i have no reason to attempt to understand the logistics.
[08:57:29] wagnerrp: its not our place to dictate mysql tuning parameters
[08:57:43] wagnerrp: if distros want to force that in their own packages, thats fine
[08:57:59] DaveQB: wagnerrp: That is awesome. I thought I was going to stuck mounting a 2TB into a 320GB named path. Thanks for the insight.
[08:59:10] adamclose: wagner; oh, no, i'm not suggesting forcing anything ... rather it would make sense to provide a "mythtv-mysql-tuner.sh" or something that reads the .cnf file, makes appropriate changes, then logs into mysql server and adds appropriate dbs, schemas, etc.
[08:59:24] adamclose: again, i'm just spouting.
[08:59:26] adamclose: i should shut up now.
[08:59:27] wagnerrp: adamclose: its more the concept that a unix application should never need root access
[08:59:42] wagnerrp: modifying the tuning parameters requires root access
[08:59:50] adamclose: ah, touche.
[08:59:57] wagnerrp: creating the initial database, and managing permissions requires mysql root access
[09:00:12] adamclose: right, right.
[09:00:15] ** adamclose fails. **
[09:00:30] wagnerrp: and more than that, with innodb you have to be very careful when changing some parameters
[09:00:41] wagnerrp: if you shrink some caches, you lose access to the data
[09:01:01] adamclose: beautiful.
[09:01:08] wagnerrp: you have to terminate the server in a special manner that flushes the caches before you can resize
[09:02:00] wagnerrp: plus when it is shared, there is always the potential you may be screwing with settings made by some user who actually knows what theyre doing
[09:02:10] adamclose: okay, so can i somehow gracefully exit "mythfilldatabase" and change it to myisam? (the install is new/clean, i don't give a ... about preservation of data.
[09:02:30] adamclose: er, to change the db to myisam
[09:02:50] wagnerrp: like i said, i believe current versions of mythtv 0.25 and 0.26 force myisam for those temporary tables
[09:03:13] adamclose: it's been running for about 5 hours.
[09:03:22] wagnerrp: if you wait until morning, sph ery knows a lot more about this stuff than i do

[21:28:56] jason1969: wagnerrp: Tried both, but ultimately there are two backends, one primary and one secondary.
[21:29:15] wagnerrp: in both, in mythtv-setup, general, first page
[21:29:25] wagnerrp: you have defined IP addresses in the relevant fields?
[21:31:05] jason1969: local backend is localhost, primary is server's name on both. (digger.vpnsoluk.lan) worked before upgrade and after empty database.
[21:31:31] wagnerrp: and yet, it specifically asks for the IP address
[21:31:48] jason1969: ipv6 is ::1, but not ipv6 is not routed here.
[21:32:21] jason1969: IP address of server is not a good solution. Works with DNS name so why use IP?
[21:33:04] wagnerrp: why is that not a good solution?
[21:33:21] wagnerrp: few users are going to be running their own DNS server
[21:33:28] wagnerrp: so it makes more sense to have internal name resolution
[21:33:45] jason1969: ip addresses can change, dns names can stay the same.
[21:34:05] jason1969: I do have internal DNS (many servers) and many hosts.
[21:34:09] wagnerrp: documentation says backends must have static IP addresses
[21:34:38] wagnerrp: ideally, everything would just autodetect, but were not there yet
[21:34:40] wagnerrp: probably 0.27
[21:34:58] jason1969: So name resolution is broken when multiple backends is used?
[21:35:36] wagnerrp: no, the system is broken when you try to outsmart it and use hostnames in the fields that say "Backend IP Address"
[21:36:14] wagnerrp: that has never been a supported configuration, and has always failed in one way or another
[21:36:19] wagnerrp: for all six years ive been using mythtv
[21:36:54] jason1969: IC. Hm makes life more difficult as all machines in the network use DHCP (accept the DHCP serever itself.)
[21:37:15] jason1969: I'll have to make an exception in the DHCP server for one host's MAC
[21:37:37] jason1969: ...hopefully I remember I did that.....
[21:39:08] jason1969: Why can't it just call GetHostByName on whatever string is entered, that usually accepts an IP dotted quad as a string as well as a DNS name.

[21:39:51] wagnerrp: which seems to indicate 'digger.vpnsoluk.lan' is not a valid host
[21:40:02] jason1969: well I can assure you it is.
[21:40:16] jason1969: And has been for about 5 years.

[21:42:09] jason1969: So "if all else fails" sometimes wrongly passes?
[21:42:17] wagnerrp: it fails in here... http://code.mythtv.org/cgit/mythtv/tree/mytht . . . ext.cpp#n890
[21:42:29] wagnerrp: because the value you have defined is neither a valid IPv4 or IPv6 address
[21:42:59] wagnerrp: no, those just take strings... not QHostAddress

[21:45:01] jason1969: So why did it work before (from 0.22 to 0.24.x)?
[21:45:32] wagnerrp: bits of code aligned that made something never intended to work, appear to work
[21:45:55] jason1969: if it ain't fixed, break it!
[21:46:16] wagnerrp: it was never intended to work, so there was no thought to test that case
[21:46:35] wagnerrp: however you want to put it, it was always a misconfiguration
[21:46:39] jason1969: Oh well better use IP address then, going to be annoying when I finally switch to ipv6 completely (damn difficult to remember)
[21:46:59] wagnerrp: could mythtv be set up better? absolutely... but this is not a bug, it is intended behavior
[21:47:07] dansnyder: my mythtv-setup stopped working – it opens but wont go into General.
[21:47:23] wagnerrp: or at least, not unintended behavior
[21:48:32] jason1969: Is there a good reason to force use of IP? Is it worth me working on a patch to simply allow a DNS lookup and update the IP in the DB, or is the reasoning much deeper?
[21:49:13] wagnerrp: it was done that way 10 years ago, and no one has changed it
[21:50:57] wagnerrp: no sense writing a patch for what you propose, as i intend to take that mechanism in a completely different direction
[21:51:22] jason1969: ..until it was recently 'fixed'; OK so I understand it doing what it should and that i should use a fixed IP. I can't wait to find out the new direction in 0.27....
[21:51:37] jason1969: Thanks!
[21:52:13] wagnerrp: in order to make ipv6 work on all systems, i had to write code that would listen in multiple places for all those servers
[21:52:30] wagnerrp: as depending on the system configuration, if you listen everywhere, you only listen on ipv6
[21:52:53] wagnerrp: so in doing so, those settings that previously told the client where to connect, now tell the server where to listen
[21:53:44] wagnerrp: the plan i intend to go for 0.27 is remove the need for those values to be defined
[21:54:16] wagnerrp: you still need IP addresses, but it determines those on its own if you leave those fields blank, and the master backend keeps track of where everything is
[21:56:24] SteveGoodey (SteveGoodey!~steve@host86-129-35-147.range86-129.btcentralplus.com) has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[21:56:24] wagnerrp: hopefully, the second part of that will be to split the master backend from the recording functionality
[21:56:38] wagnerrp: so then the master backend is simply whatever machine is running it currently
[21:57:05] wagnerrp: and matching the masterbackendip to the local backendserverip is no longer used to determine roles
[22:01:49] fafa88: the commercial flagging on 0.25-fixes seems to cut the beginning of the commericals a few secs too early.

[23:39:01] wagnerrp: so with that in mind, how would you propose you scan for channels using that card?

[23:40:15] wagnerrp: because the card is not configured properly

[23:41:02] pikapp: Is it possible to set it up with just one channel?
[23:41:35] wagnerrp: better to configure the IR blaster on the card to allow control over the cable box
[23:41:43] wagnerrp: also better to use the svideo input rather than the RF input
[23:41:59] pikapp: I do not have s-video, only composite and RF
[23:42:20] wagnerrp: the card has svideo, youre saying the cable box does not?
[23:42:26] pikapp: yes
[23:42:30] wagnerrp: then use composite
[23:43:01] fafa88: wagnerrp: wait, why can't he configure mythtv to only tune to channel 3??

[23:43:39] wagnerrp: but i dont know why you would want to do that
[23:46:23] wagnerrp: additionally, since youre capturing the output of another device, that device will always be outputting a signal, whether the channel in question can be tuned or not
[23:46:35] wagnerrp: that means its simply not possible to scan for channels when using an external tuner
[23:46:56] wagnerrp: pull a channel listing from your schedules direct lineup
