[00:33:25] wagnerrp: tgm4883: mythtv does not allow you to set the device id

[04:14:29] terabit: hey everyone, how on earth do I setup mythtv ? I keep running into db errors. I even took a few hours to install qt and qt-sql ,mysql again ,mysql is running at port 3306 removed my ~/.mythtv run using default options and still doesn't work.
[04:14:42] terabit: do I manually need to connect to a database and setup mythtv credentials ?
[04:14:46] wagnerrp: what distro?
[04:14:56] terabit: gentoo-hardened
[04:15:02] terabit: installed it from source though
[04:15:12] terabit: well...from tarball
[04:15:53] wagnerrp: you dont want to use the tarball, clone the git repository, or pull an up-to-date tarball from github
[04:15:59] wagnerrp: as for the database... http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-6.html#ss6.2
[04:16:59] terabit: so the stable tarball on mythtv website is no good ?
[04:17:03] zombor (zombor!~zombor_@65.29.231.135) has joined #mythtv-users

[04:17:18] wagnerrp: its perfectly fine... its just not the latest
[04:17:28] wagnerrp: if youre compiling from source, you may as well have the latest fixes
[04:17:43] wagnerrp: the only reason the tarball is there is for certain distros that require packages be a release version
[04:20:32] terabit: ok, I give up nothing works :(
[04:20:51] wagnerrp: that mc.sql file is in the source
[04:21:07] terabit: run mysql < /usr/share/mythtv/database/mc.sql
[04:21:07] terabit: just like the article says for gentoo
[04:21:07] terabit: bash: /usr/share/mythtv/database/mc.sql: No such file or directory
[04:21:08] wagnerrp: all it does is set up the shell of the database, default user and password, and encoding
[04:21:20] wagnerrp: right, those directions are probably assuming youre using the ebuild
[04:21:32] wagnerrp: and the ebuild manually dumps that file there
[04:22:06] wagnerrp: where ever you unpacked the source, i believe its in mythtv/programs/scripts/database/mc.sql
[04:22:37] wagnerrp: no, just mythtv/database/mc.sql
[04:22:44] wagnerrp: anyway, it just sets up the basic shell
[04:22:55] wagnerrp: mythtv-setup takes it the rest of the way from there when you run it for the first time
[04:23:06] terabit: yeah found mc.sql
[04:23:14] terabit: seems to have fixed that issue
[04:23:24] terabit: so I should run mythtv-setup next right ?
[04:23:37] wagnerrp: follow the directions on that page
[04:23:47] wagnerrp: http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO.html
[04:29:27] terabit: wagnerrp: thanks, getting another error about backend but let me do make install again and remove ~/.mythtv and run the setup again
[04:29:36] wagnerrp: what error?
[04:30:44] terabit: "warning: the backend is currently running. changing existing card inputs, deleting anything, or scanning for channels may not work."
[04:31:08] wagnerrp: digital tuners get locked to a single application while in use
[04:31:35] wagnerrp: and by default, mythbackend will lock all tuners it wants access to for the full duration it is running, not just when it is recording
[04:31:53] wagnerrp: so if mythbackend is currently running, mythtv-setup will be restricted in how it can access those tuners
[04:32:50] wagnerrp: note, all settings besides where the database is, are stored in the database

[04:33:01] wagnerrp: deleting ~/.mythtv/ wont do a whole lot
[04:33:52] terabit: so what should I do ? it says all tuners are in use
[04:34:01] wagnerrp: what does?
[04:34:22] terabit: when I click on watchtv on mythwelcome
[04:34:40] wagnerrp: you probably dont want to use mythwelcome
[04:35:04] wagnerrp: mythbackend can manage shutdown and timed startup on its own if you want
[04:35:14] wagnerrp: but if mythfrontend is connected, it will block it from shutting down
[04:35:36] terabit: so how do I just start it and start watching tv on it ?
[04:35:43] wagnerrp: the purpose of mythwelcome is to drop out of the frontend so the backend can manage shutdown, but still provide an LIRC controllable menu to get back into the frontend
[04:35:52] wagnerrp: most people just run mythfrontend directly
[04:36:43] terabit: still says all tuners are busy
[04:37:01] wagnerrp: the backend is probably complaining about something in its logs
[04:37:29] wagnerrp: no file permissions to access the tuners, no file permissions to access the recording directories, no channels defined, no starting channel
[04:37:32] wagnerrp: something of that sort
[04:38:26] terabit: where would the logs be ?
[04:38:42] wagnerrp: by default, it will log to the terminal you started it in
[04:39:03] wagnerrp: unless you redirected that output to a file, or specified a log file on the command line
[04:39:51] terabit: I thought you meant it had another log file
[04:39:58] terabit: here is what the output says http://pastebin.com/BKedpmst
[04:40:34] wagnerrp: cannot connect to master server, did you run mythbackend?
[04:40:45] terabit: yup
[04:41:14] wagnerrp: looks like you never told it the address to listen on
[04:41:27] wagnerrp: mythtv-setup, general, first page
[04:41:36] wagnerrp: there should be a Master Backend IP setting
[04:42:09] wagnerrp: that must match one of the two IP addresses you defined above, on whatever machine you have acting as your master backend
[04:42:20] terabit: guess I run that so many times I failed to do that at one point
[04:42:45] wagnerrp: its how mythtv determines which backend will operate as the master, with any other `mythbackend` instances operate in slave mode
[04:43:11] wagnerrp: master backend handles scheduling and other global tasks, slave backends only deal with their own local tuners and storage

[05:01:37] terabit: wagnerrp: thanks a lot for the help :)
[05:01:55] terabit: kaffeine happens to work so I guess I'll mess with mythtv another time
[05:02:19] wagnerrp: if you just want something to watch tv, by all means use kaffeine or mplayer or similar
[05:02:50] wagnerrp: mythtv is more intended as an appliance, recording stuff in the background for viewing days or years later
[05:03:39] wagnerrp: its going to be much more complex than need to be for live viewing
[05:04:04] terabit: cool
[05:04:05] wagnerrp: and the live viewing faculty in mythtv has often had troubles, due to limited use among the developer base
[05:04:23] terabit: thought it was more like xbmc for tv + dvr
[05:04:55] wagnerrp: the primary function is a DVR, video/music/photo library capabilities are secondary

[17:22:43] tgm4883: sentry02_, there was an issue with jbd2 using 90+% IO. Reading/Writing don't matter (they were around 0 for this issue)
[17:24:08] sentry02_: I don't have any jbd2 process running. What is that?
[17:24:27] sentry02_: oh, nm

[17:24:50] sentry02_: my root is on XFS
[17:24:54] tgm4883: ok
[17:25:05] tgm4883: then IDK what the issue is. Did you go though http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Tune_MySQL
[17:25:12] sentry02_: mysql DB is on ZFS RAID array separate from my recordings and root
[17:26:42] sentry02_: I will definitely look through Tune_MySQL. I believe I did that a while back, but will do it again. I figured that if the problem was related to MySQL, then other areas would suffer and I would see long running queries. Which isn't the case. I can record 6 shows and stream 3 shows all at the same time, while commflagging one, with no issues. It is just this one part of mythweb giving me grief.
[17:27:50] tgm4883: yea that page was written specifically because one thing (mythfilldatabase) was taking way too long using 12.04
[17:28:19] sentry02_: I appreciate everyone's thoughts and ideas. I have to step away for about 30 minutes to make lunch for my 5 year old and 2 year old. But I am determined to find this issue today.
[17:28:40] tgm4883: sentry02_, a big difference that happened in 12.04 is that mysql is now 5.5, which defaults to the innodb engine
[17:29:37] sentry02_: interesting. I restored my DB from the 10.04/0.24 system. Possible issue there? But wouldn't other areas of Myth suffer also?
[17:30:05] tgm4883: sentry02_, no, most tables are specified to use the myisam engine
[17:30:19] tgm4883: restoring from 10.04/0.24 wouldn't cause an issue
[17:30:21] sentry02_: I did forget one item. I upgraded 10.04/0.24 to 10.04/0.25 before I backed up the DB.
[17:30:31] tgm4883: that shouldn't cause an issue either
[17:30:40] sentry02_: Then I installed a fresh 12.04/0.25 and restored the DB.
[17:30:50] tgm4883: sentry02_, that is fine, that is what I did as well
[17:31:01] RoboJ1M: Hi, I'm having problems with the new myth services api, specifically GetRecordings and GetRecording. Videos that play back fine in the front end fail to play over the API. Manually fudging the date/time does not resolve the 404 with GetRecording. Can anybody help? :)

[17:32:57] RoboJ1M: You can specify the recordings by ID? Couldn't find that in the API docs, GetRecording lists its params as ChannelID and StartDateTime
[17:33:13] tgm4883: RoboJ1M, let me check how I do it for my scope
[17:33:26] tgm4883: it's not by start time, that is for sure
[17:33:29] sentry02_: I'll be back after lunch, maybe a little break will help me think of some other issue. I feel like it is related to the silly Flowplayer (JW Player) portion of the recording details page. But don't know how to confirm that possibility.
[17:34:03] sentry02_: Thank you very much <tgm4883>
[17:34:57] tgm4883: RoboJ1M, I use getfile and the filename for my unity scope/lens. Not sure if that will work for you or not
[17:35:20] RoboJ1M: Hmm, I'll try that

StartTime and StartTs. StartTime is the wrong value to use (although sometimes works, because sometimes it's the same as StartTs). StartTs appears to work, it also appears to be the time that the recording was started, as opposed to the schedule time from the EPG (StartTime). Off to fix my code

[18:19:53] wagnerrp: sentry02_: ZFS, JFS, and XFS, all on the same system?
[18:20:12] sentry02_: yes, different physical drives and controllers.
[18:20:20] wagnerrp: why?
[18:20:32] RoboJ1M: For a program that started at 22:20, but I had 1 minute early start set, StartTime was 22:20 (404) and StartTs was 22:19 (works). Looks like one is scheduled start (EPG) and actual start.
[18:20:51] RoboJ1M: and *the other* is actual start
[18:20:56] sentry02_: JFS as recommended for large mythtv file handling, read it in the manual years ago and left it as-is since it appears to work.
[18:21:12] wagnerrp: its not so much JFS is recommended, but ext3 is recommended against
[18:21:25] sentry02_: XFS for the root because I haven't read too many good comments about EXT4 but all my new frontends just use EXT4.
[18:21:28] tgm4883: I used XFS for large files, before just using EXT4
[18:21:38] wagnerrp: why not ZFS for root?
[18:21:55] sentry02_: ZFS because I wanted cheap raid. And did not want to root on ZFS because of the challenges getting there.
[18:22:13] wagnerrp: RAID1 i presume?
[18:23:47] wagnerrp: you shouldnt be running RAID5/6 on anything that is going to be written to heavily
[18:23:54] wagnerrp: (like a mysql database)
[18:24:28] sentry02_: RAIDZ1 (aka RAID5), for maximum storage capacity. Stuck with it. Has mysql DB over on the RAID-1 ZFS, but performance was terrible. So I moved the DB over to the RAIDZ1 since it is on a PCI-X RAID controller, just don't like using the controller's native RAID, so I JBOD it.
[18:25:14] wagnerrp: raidz is better than raid5 in terms of write performance, but it still sucks
[18:25:22] sentry02_: understood on not using RAID5/6 for heavy writes, but I got myself stuck with my system. I can stick it on RAID-1 XFS or RAID-1 ZFS (same physical drives, different partitions)
[18:25:26] wagnerrp: and its not like your database is going to be taking a lot of room
[18:25:40] sentry02_: or on one of my 4 JFS drives used for actual recordings
[18:25:56] wagnerrp: no, you do NOT want your database on the same disks as you record to
[18:26:01] wagnerrp: ... unless that disk is an SSD
[18:26:06] Sharky112065: wagnerrp: lol, I keep seeing people say not to use raid5 or raid6, but I have been running raid6 for weeks with no issues. Even recording 18 recordings at the same time. Maybe the distinction is hardware raid vs software raid. I am using hardware raid
[18:26:07] sentry02_: or where it is performing best right now, on the 3ware 9550 RAID contoller with JBOD and ZFS RAIDZ1
[18:26:30] sentry02_: understood. definitely have no intention of putting the db on the recording drives.
[18:27:10] wagnerrp: sharky: with a battery-backed hardware RAID, or ZFS with an L2ARC, writes can be flushed to the controller very fast, and the controller buffers out the poor write performance of RAID5/6
[18:27:16] sentry02_: I am getting great I/O across the board on everything.
[18:27:41] wagnerrp: the issue is that if you write something that is not perfectly aligned with a slice boundary
[18:27:42] Sharky112065: wagnerrp: agreed. I would never use software raid for this.
[18:27:52] sentry02_: Yes, it could be better, but I'm not seeing any major bottlenecks. All queries are blazing fast, except this one page in mythweb
[18:27:53] wagnerrp: you must read the previous data, compute parity, and write back out
[18:28:02] wagnerrp: making the whole write process much slower
[18:28:31] wagnerrp: and as for multiple simultaneous writes, you must rapidly seek all the drives back and forth for each write
[18:29:07] wagnerrp: with independent drives, each drive would only have to seek a fraction of the time
[18:29:17] wagnerrp: and you have much higher total throughput
[18:29:26] Sharky112065: wagnerrp: it might also be worse for a small number of drives. I have 8 drives, so I'm not noticing any bottlenecks
[18:29:43] sentry02_: I'm pretty confident that I don't have a disk I/O issue here. If I did, I don't think I could record 6, watch 3 existing recordings, and commflag all at the same time, all of which hit the DB constantly.
[18:29:49] wagnerrp: nope, just as bad regardless of the number of drives
[18:30:15] wagnerrp: its just that with more drives, the write throughput in between seeks is proportionally less
[18:30:23] wagnerrp: but seeks take just as long
[18:30:24] Sharky112065: wagnerrp: well, its working fine for me.
[18:30:51] wagnerrp: with 18 recordings simultaneously on the same array, you're spending several hundred ms/s seeking around
[18:31:34] wagnerrp: if those 8 drives were independent, that time spent seeking on each drive would be divided by 8
[18:32:07] Sharky112065: wagnerrp: normally I only would be recording 8 or 9 shows max. 18 was just my testing to see if it would be reliable.
[18:33:04] wagnerrp: but with hardware raid, with a battery backup, your barrier is once it hits that memory cache on the controller, so it can re-order the operations and reduce the total number of seeks
[18:33:21] Sharky112065: I also turned off barriers
[18:33:30] sentry02_: in case anybody missed my issue and question. All of my MythTV and mythweb is working great except when I click on a recorded show in MythWeb to see the recording details. It takes 10 minutes or longer just to load the recording details for one show.
[18:33:41] sentry02_: All other mythweb pages load in the blink of an eye.
[18:33:43] wagnerrp: an L2ARC on ZFS does the same thing, but with a chunk of SLC disk rather than battery backed memory
[18:34:02] wagnerrp: does the page load halfway and then stall?
[18:34:22] Sharky112065: I have not yet played with mythweb. Guess ill do that today.
[18:34:55] sentry02_: it redirects to /mythweb/tv/detail/<chanid>/<recordtime> and sits on a blank page with just the mythweb headers and menu bar for about 10 minutes. It does not timeout or give any errors, it will eventually show a complete page.
[18:35:31] sentry02_: I rely on mythweb for all of my admin. I set recording schedules and check just about everything from mythweb.
[18:35:47] Twiggy2cents: I almost dont want to say this but, I had that same exact issue but I cant for the life of me remember what I did to fix it
[18:36:05] wagnerrp: the only similar issue there im aware of is with the flash player
[18:36:07] sentry02_: The detail page was fast in ubuntu 10.04 and mythtv 0.24.
[18:36:18] wagnerrp: sometimes it will stall waiting to find a thumbnail
[18:36:23] sentry02_: I have this feeling that it is something to do with the flash player.
[18:36:27] Twiggy2cents: sentry02_, that was the same for me. It was after an upgrade.
[18:36:29] wagnerrp: but usually that only waits ~30s
[18:36:33] sentry02_: I just don't know how to prove it or eliminate it.
[18:36:56] sentry02_: it seems to stall waiting on a thumbnail, but the logs don't seem to line up with that.
[18:37:04] Twiggy2cents: I think it was from not following the "retiring a backend page" or something
[18:38:46] sentry02_: I'm only running a single backend. And it is using the same hostname.
[18:39:18] Twiggy2cents: That applies to a reformat too
[18:39:22] sentry02_: I wish I could see what it was doing behind the scenes while it is trying to build this details page.
[18:40:48] sentry02_: Everything listed on this page http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Backend_migration is good in my setup.
[18:41:43] Twiggy2cents: You did "delete all" on the SG paths?
[18:42:13] sentry02_: The old 10.04 install never did have a fully functioning hostname though. If I manually checked the FQDN it would not work, but the hostname stored in the database is the correct hostname for my old backend and my current backend.
[18:42:52] sentry02_: I did not delete the storage groups, I edited each one to confirm that they were accurate and backend setup did not complain on exit.
[18:43:18] sentry02_: I also did not do a delete all on my 10 tuners. But they are all working well.
[18:43:49] Twiggy2cents: I dont think that that is the part but you have to delete the whole group otherwise the DB thinks that there is still sg's on the old hostname
[18:43:51] sentry02_: should I just go ahead and do a delete all on the SG dirs and recreate them?
[18:44:00] Twiggy2cents: in mythtv-setup
[18:44:06] sentry02_: hostname is the same.
[18:44:17] sentry02_: old hostname = new hostname
[18:44:48] sentry02_: If I had a hostname issue, I wouldn't be able to find or play any recordings from the frontends.
[18:44:53] Twiggy2cents: you can try PageSpeed in google chrome for benchmarking the webpage
[18:45:04] sentry02_: I'll check out PageSpeed.
[18:45:12] wagnerrp: or firebug in firefox
[18:45:14] Twiggy2cents: You redefined the sg's. So now the database has twice the amount of sg;s
[18:45:19] Twiggy2cents: duped
[18:45:38] wagnerrp: that shouldnt make any difference
[18:45:40] Twiggy2cents: mythtv-setup only shows that computers sg's not all of them
[18:45:59] wagnerrp: it should still be a fraction of a second to figure out where the recordings (and thumbnails) are located
[18:46:47] Twiggy2cents: Loading my recording details takes about 15 seconds
[18:47:07] Twiggy2cents: Still seems long but maybe not. My stuff is usually slightly broken at all times though
[18:47:23] sentry02_: My recording details used to take 15 seconds as well. That is what I am trying to get back to and cannot seem to find any reason for the long delay.
[18:47:58] sentry02_: 15 seconds I can live with. 10 minutes or longer for one recording details page is unbearable.
[18:48:20] sentry02_: I can do a delete all on my storage groups.
[18:48:33] sentry02_: Should I do a delete all on anything else? Probably no need.
[18:49:52] Twiggy2cents: You cant delete on all hosts for default though, but you do for the rest
[18:49:53] wagnerrp: there is no "delete all" on storage groups
[18:49:54] wagnerrp: only tuners
[18:50:31] wagnerrp: but it shouldnt matter, since mythtv only cares about those storage groups defined for the host the recording is said to exist on
[18:51:38] sentry02_: looking at the storagegroup table in the DB, all entries are clean. Although they are using symlinks, which I don't need, so I can edit them to use the true path
[18:52:10] sentry02_: my default SG has 4 directories, none are symlinked, one directory per physical drive.

[19:00:58] wisenuts1: having problems with a script and don't want to have to stop the backend to make and edit. I don't think the %DIR% and %FILE% are being passed properly or i screwd up the job

[19:18:06] wagnerrp: i dont think you are, im just telling you that is not mythtv-setup giving you that warning
[19:18:42] sentry02_: on my mythweb recording details, when I click a recording to get the details, nothing is getting logged anyplace. It is probably all under apache2 since it is mythweb, but I only have the access.log there.

[19:45:22] wagnerrp: i know
[19:45:29] tgm4883: I'd have to check the backend service to see how it exactly stops the backend
[19:45:34] tgm4883: is there a preferred way to stop it?
[19:46:09] wagnerrp: well the issue is just that there are things in mythtv-setup that dont require the backend to be stopped, or restarted to take effect
[19:46:43] tgm4883: ah ok, so that is the only issue then?
[19:46:50] wagnerrp: only one i see
[19:47:05] wagnerrp: and not worth worrying about too much, with mythtv-setup going away
[19:48:00] tgm4883: Is that going away for 0.26? There isn't anything on the release notes page
[19:48:08] Sharky112065: Is joining the two parts together as one with some utility the only way to do it?
[19:48:19] wagnerrp: no, hopefully 0.27
[19:48:36] wagnerrp: sharky: re-rip it off the DVD in one part?
[19:49:17] Sharky112065: Ok, ill do that or join it back together, was hoping there was some way to put something in the file name that the grabber would ignore
[19:49:53] tgm4883: can you hide videos?
[19:50:00] wagnerrp: yes
[19:50:09] tgm4883: cause you could name the first part correctly, and set the second video to play after the first
[19:50:22] wagnerrp: no sense making the grabber understand something that shouldnt happen in the first place
[19:50:37] wagnerrp: only reason to have multi-part videos is when the storage medium is too small to hold it in one part
[19:50:54] wagnerrp: or when there is a logical split between multiple parts in the story-line
[19:51:04] Sharky112065: I only have 2 movies like that and not really worth re ripping or joining. ill just watch them finally and delete them
[19:51:05] wagnerrp: in the latter case, there would be separate metadata for both

[20:21:43] sentry02_: my mythweb recording details "slow load" appears to be due to all the queries being performed and several are flagged as slow queries.  :-(
[20:22:49] sentry02_: but mysqladmin doesn't show any long running queries. And the queries that get flagged as slow are only taking 2 seconds. I'm still scratching my head.

[20:38:59] sentry02_: I guess I was mistaken. no more slow query log entries, must have been just some initial queries right after restarting mysql with some increase buffers and cache settings.

[21:04:06] sentry02_: I'm giving up. There just aren't enough log entries and any other indicators for why mythweb takes more than 10 minutes to display the recording details page of one recording. Very frustrating.
[21:16:56] Captain_Murdoch: sentry02_, I was just looking into that. I'm not sure either, but will be taking a look later today. trying to get the HTTP Live Streaming working on that page.
[21:17:03] Captain_Murdoch: takes about 2 minutes here.

[23:25:40] sentry02_: Ok, was afk for a long while. Captain_Murdoch thank you for your feedback. While my recording details still takes 10 minutes or longer, the Flowplayer option is turned off on the client side. I can't find any settings server side. I really want to dig into what the detail.php script is doing and how long each step takes. I just don't know how to start doing that process.

[23:55:36] sentry02_: ok, new twist in my saga with mythweb. When I pick a show from the listings page, it pulls up slight variation of the recording details page, and loads it instantly. The obvious differences are no thumbnail, no links for streaming and direct download and no action buttons for transcode or play on specific frontends.
