[00:00:06] smoothifier: is there a way to track down what process invoked a shell by its PID?
[00:04:07] sphery: smoothifier: still running? ps -efw | grep <pid>
[00:04:19] sphery: then do the same for the reported parent pid
[00:04:48] smoothifier: sphery: thanks. i killed it but it will be back in a while :)
[00:04:53] sphery: hehe
[00:05:26] smoothifier: does mythfrontend/backend periodically scan the storage directories by any chance?
[00:05:50] smoothifier: for videos, specifically?
[00:06:40] sphery: on 0.24 and below it did for upnp
[00:06:47] sphery: don't think 0.25 does
[00:08:40] smoothifier: i have a cifs share mounted in my storage directory, and when i leave the machine to sleep and come back an hour or so later, i find a bash shell with status D, and am unable to access the share. i can kill this bash shell and then remount the share and things work okay.
[00:09:00] smoothifier: i know this is really idiotic and i should have the data on that machine
[00:09:17] smoothifier: for some reason, i'm resistant to doing that
[00:09:54] smoothifier: the machine = the windows machine. the mythtv machine stays on.
[00:11:48] smoothifier: oh, today i got a couple of rj45/vga adapters to make a really long lossy vga cable. i read about putting vga over cat5 and i've always wanted to try it.

[00:54:07] robbiet480: Hey, building a new MythTV backend/NAS, first dive into MythTV. Planning to have two HDHomeRuns, PRIME (CableCard) and DUAL (OTA) on the network and the backend utilizing them for recordings. Was planning to go with just an Intel Atom D525 1.8GHz dual core attached to a mobo but then realized there was no graphics card on board. Do I need a graphics card for good recording performance. I am planning to only record in HD
[00:56:15] robbiet480: So, does the backend really require a GPU and/or a better processor
[00:56:23] [R]: gpu has nothign to do with recording
[00:56:28] [R]: and an atom is awful for a backend
[00:56:58] robbiet480: Okay
[00:57:00] robbiet480: That's what I figured
[00:57:10] robbiet480: i7 3.8GHz quad core shouldn't break a sweat though right :p
[00:57:23] ertyu-m: thats quite the jump
[00:57:28] [R]: well recording off a hdhomerun requires no cpu power
[00:57:31] [R]: since it just dumps digital data
[00:57:38] robbiet480: okay
[00:57:45] robbiet480: so then why is an atom terrible?
[00:57:50] robbiet480: i/o or database or what
[00:57:55] [R]: because atoms suck
[00:57:57] robbiet480: lol
[00:57:59] [R]: theres mysql
[00:58:01] [R]: theres comm flagging
[00:58:03] [R]: theres transcoding
[00:58:07] robbiet480: okay i get it
[00:58:08] ertyu-m: unfortunately atoms are pretty bad at everything
[00:58:32] ertyu-m: most normal chips can idle down to similar power levels
[00:58:40] robbiet480: whats the lowest i series that i should get then
[00:58:43] robbiet480: i3 i5 or i7
[00:59:03] robbiet480: it is very possible i will have 4 things recording at once off the HDHomeRuns
[00:59:22] [R]: [05:57:27] [R] well recording off a hdhomerun requires no cpu power
[00:59:30] ertyu-m: that's the question I've been wondering lately, if a low end dual core intel or triple core amd is sufficient
[00:59:32] robbiet480: even with 4 tuners?
[00:59:34] robbiet480: okay
[00:59:41] ertyu-m: ?for a combined be/fe
[00:59:44] [R]: its jsut dumping digital data
[00:59:59] robbiet480: so its just the other stuff thats the issue
[01:00:04] robbiet480: (comm flagging, transcoding, mysql)
[01:01:48] robbiet480: okay, so do i even need a dedicated GPU? any i7 (which is what I will most likely get) has built in graphics now, but only an intel hd 3000, so im not doing HD recording anytime soon
[01:01:53] robbiet480: HD playback*
[01:02:34] [R]: are you talking about a backend or a frontend
[01:02:52] robbiet480: backend
[01:02:59] [R]: [05:56:23] [R] gpu has nothign to do with recording
[01:03:02] robbiet480: frontend has a atom + ION so it wont be an issue
[01:03:08] robbiet480: again just making sure
[01:03:13] ertyu-m: backend doesn't need graphics
[01:03:23] robbiet480: sweet saved 129.99

[01:13:09] [R]: but theres one way to fidn out...
[01:15:41] ertyu-m: the try and fail method isn't very efficient

[11:38:58] sphery: or with your audio setup
[11:39:02] sphery: (see why we need more info)
[11:39:28] rileyp: Oh
[11:39:49] rileyp: it seems to drop frames when livetv starts then it settles down
[11:40:08] sphery: ah, that could indicate a problem with Live TV (i.e. same for everyone)
[11:41:57] rileyp: i expect the dropped frames at the start of livetv starting though. My backend is only a dual core arm 1.3 It seems to cope ok though and is very good on power consumption :D
[11:42:08] sphery: basically, though, if you use one of the example vdpau Playback Profile groups (on a sufficiently powerful vdpau-compatible card), you should be getting excellent quality
[11:44:41] sphery: Video size 1440 x 1080 ?
[11:44:47] rileyp: My frontend is a atom 525 vith onboard/integrated NVidia 210 I think. I'm kind of asking if the graphics + vdpau settings I'm using are the best for what I have.
[11:44:59] sphery: is this really HDTV 4:3 content or just non-square pixels?
[11:45:06] rileyp: No my screen is 1920x1080
[11:45:16] sphery: right
[11:45:20] sphery: but the video you're decoding isn't
[11:47:35] rileyp: Its Australian tv content . I honestly dont know whether what they were transmitting was 1440x1080 or not I suppose 720x 2 = 1440 perhaps it was 720p
[11:48:37] sphery: no, the decoder said it was 1440x1080, so that's what was in the video stream... just wondering if it's really 4:3 (with square pixels) display aspect ratio or 16:9 (with non-square pixels)
[11:49:06] sphery: anyway, it's not important--I just hadn't seen content like that before
[12:13:22] rileyp: spery was it this line here VSYNC: DRMVideoSync: Could not open device /dev/dri/card0, No such file or directory
[12:13:22] rileyp: 2012-06–17 22:11:20.765 VSYNC: RTCVideoSync: Could not open /dev/rtc, Permission denied.
[12:15:49] sphery: rileyp: that only means that your system doesn't have a /dev/dri/card0 that can be used for video sync (smooth frame delivery)
[12:16:11] sphery: and user running mythfrontend doesn't have permission to use /dev/rtc for high-precision timing
[12:16:23] sphery: so it just falls back to "software" timing, basically
[12:16:37] rileyp: ok so its totally normal
[12:16:44] sphery: yeah
[12:17:43] sphery: you can set your system to allow the mythfrontend usre to use /dev/rtc (likely allow world read on /dev/rtc0) and ensure unprivileged users have a high-enough frequency allowed
[12:17:54] sphery: or just keep using software timing
[12:21:59] rileyp: Video Rect left: 0, top: 0, width: 1440, height: 1080 another hd file I have is the same perhaps thats the norm in Australia for hd
[12:22:15] dekarl: rileyp: its not uncommon in europe either
[12:22:58] rileyp: Trying to match best refresh rate 25.000Hz
[12:22:59] rileyp: shouldnt it run at 50hz?
[12:23:02] dekarl: 1440 is HDV/HDCam tape format
[12:23:30] dekarl: see e.g. http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcinternet/2011/0 . . . rom_wim.html
[12:23:30] rileyp: Display Refresh Rate: 50.000 Video Frame Rate sorry just saw this

[20:32:57] justinh: Spida: you shouldn't be digging in the database. Period
[20:33:25] dekarl: 71 should read ard.de if I understand that correctly http://xmltv.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/xmltv . . . ew=markup#l1
[20:34:09] justinh: Spida: one way to tell if the mapping is wrong is if mythfilldatabase is inserting a bunch of dummy, but useless channels with good EPG data
[20:34:14] dekarl: did it break 9 days ago?
[20:34:21] justinh: cos if the mapping is wrong, that's what'll happen
[20:34:28] Spida: dekarl: yes, possibly
[20:34:37] Spida: dekarl: did they change the format then?
[20:34:50] dekarl: lots of issues with the grabber have been fixed...
[20:34:56] Spida: ok
[20:34:59] Spida: will update
[20:35:04] dekarl: http://xmltv.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/xmltv . . . ata?view=log
[20:35:21] dekarl: I was trying to hint that the fixes might have actually broken something :)
[20:36:12] justinh: when xmltv feeds get 'fixed' or 'improved' they generally break their associated grabber
[20:36:23] ** justinh scowls at RadioTimes **
[20:37:02] justinh: Spida: you could also test the grabber yourself by running the script outside of mythfilldatabase
[20:37:16] dekarl: justinh, no changes upstream... I just stirred the grabber devs up when I asked for a release due to _ch_search ;)
[20:39:02] Spida: justinh: the grabber works, I get a huge xml file (and some perl errors)
[20:39:37] Spida: dekarl: no, I didn't update yet
[20:39:53] dekarl: Spide, but you said the channel_id mapping stopped working?
[20:41:11] Spida: I am not sure what broke. I do not get listings anymore in mythtv
[20:41:43] Spida: from that fact and that the grabber itself worked I GUESSED that the mapping broke
[20:41:44] dekarl: I think you get "ard.de" instead of "71"
[20:42:50] Spida: I am updateing xmltv now
[20:44:00] Spida: will report back tomorrow
[20:44:07] Spida: dekarl: thanks for your input
[20:44:26] dekarl: ok, if it still fails you can post to xmltv-users, I think Jan (the maintainer) reads it

[23:05:29] Sharky112065: What is better to install Mythtv backend on Debian Squeez or latest Ubuntu?
[23:07:16] jm|laptop: define: 'good'
[23:08:14] Sharky112065: Which will be less of a hassel for me.
[23:08:28] Sharky112065: short term and long term
[23:08:32] Sharky112065: ?
[23:08:35] RagingMind: mythbuntu probably. though I personally use debian
[23:08:55] jm|laptop: self-built mythtv on Debian here, too
[23:09:20] RagingMind: the packages in deb-multimedia for mythtv/squeeze is only 0.24.1
[23:09:31] jm|laptop: Sharky112065: RagingMind is correct, if you're relatively new or lazy then MythBuntu does much of the heavy lifting for you and will have a newer version of mythtv in packages
[23:09:37] Sharky112065: I have a debian server right now and would like to stay on Debian, but I heard that there were some issues with some of the things that mythtv uses not being upgraded in a timely fassion.
[23:09:50] jm|laptop: RagingMind: and as we know, debian-multimedia is due a name change :)
[23:10:16] jm|laptop: Sharky112065: there's probably nothing stopping you from building the latest mythtv from source on squeeze
[23:10:42] Sharky112065: jm|laptop: OK thanks, that is what I wanted to know/hear. :)

[23:10:55] Sharky112065: Im sticking with Debian Squeeze then.
[23:11:31] RagingMind: Sharky112065, don't forget that wheezy is going into freeze soon
[23:12:43] RagingMind: between that and wanting 0.25 I upgraded my server and frontend last week. the server/backed upgraded fine, but I had video driver issues with the frontend
[23:13:05] jm|laptop: RagingMind: how come? (re: backend)

[23:13:53] RagingMind: ?
[23:14:09] RagingMind: I didn't have issues with the backend
[23:14:17] jm|laptop: with squeeze, I mean
[23:14:31] RagingMind: oh, I didn't want to compile
[23:14:38] jm|laptop: ah.
[23:14:57] RagingMind: I'd rather move to a new distro release than fiddle with compiling
[23:15:26] jm|laptop: "distro" release. See about re: debian-multimedia
[23:15:31] jm|laptop: s/about/above/
[23:16:09] RagingMind: I thought about just using the wheezy deb-multimedia source, but I was worried if something broke it'd be a bigger pain
[23:16:59] jm|laptop: fwiw just trial and error through the ./configure scripts let me manage to build the -dev dependencies in wheezy
[23:17:03] jm|laptop: rather than build-dep
[23:17:12] jm|laptop: s/build/install/
[23:20:32] Sharky112065: RagingMind: can't I just do a dist upgrade?
