[02:05:49] waxhead_ is now known as waxhead
[02:06:52] waxhead: what I'm trying to work out is where this xmltv config is set: XMLTV config file is: /home/pete/.mythtv/FTA.xmltv
[02:07:04] waxhead: when I look at that file, it does exist, however it's empty.
[02:07:17] waxhead: I'm wondering, is this the xmltv output from shepherd that it should be looking at?
[02:07:53] waxhead: if so, then where is that config item set? because shepherd is putting it somewhere else...

[05:53:06] [R]: what version, what theme
[05:53:43] whoDat: .25/fixes. any theme (i tried different ones)

[06:14:43] wagnerrp: that creates the base database and permissions
[06:14:50] wagnerrp: mythtv-setup takes it from there

[16:22:52] wagnerrp: anything you can capture over firewire, you can capture using a cablecard tuner
[16:23:33] wagnerrp: significant upfront cost for the tuner, but the cablecard rental will replace several considerably more expensive cable box rentals
[16:24:13] wagnerrp: DCR-2650, HDHomeRun Prime, and InfiniTV will do 2, 3, and 4 recordings respectively, off a single cablecard
[16:24:19] ViperSBT: Well, I was just looking at the InfiniTV, not sure if I have a spare PCIe slot that it can use, will check that out in a moment... The Wiki says it is supported...

[16:27:41] wagnerrp: it would get you all the same channels you would get over firewire
[16:27:52] wagnerrp: what that actually means? i dont really know
[16:28:08] wagnerrp: cablecard is a DRM scheme
[16:28:23] wagnerrp: and since MythTV is not licensed to use it, we can only access channels that are DRM free
[16:28:33] ViperSBT: OK... So if I can't get Firewire working, which I already have everything cost-wise to do it, then this may be the road to go as it will require additional cost...
[16:28:45] wagnerrp: they can be encrypted, but they have to be marked "copy freely"
[16:29:16] wagnerrp: look around on the internet, see if theres a way to put your cable box into some kind of diagnostic mode to see the CCI information
[16:29:44] wagnerrp: if the CCI information says the channels are marked "copy freely", you can use a cablecard tuner, and you _may_ be able to use firewire
[16:29:54] wagnerrp: if its marked "copy once" or "copy never", neither would work
[16:30:09] wagnerrp: the best you could do is just use firewire to change channels on the cable box, and use analog capture
[16:30:44] wagnerrp: however the point im getting at is that a cable box rental is typically going to be $8-$10/mo

[16:31:21] wagnerrp: and that single cablecard rental would replace up to four cable boxes, depending on how many inputs your tuner accepts
[16:31:36] wagnerrp: upfront cost, but a significant cut on your monthly cable bill
[16:31:50] wagnerrp: and its going to be far more reliable than firewire capture

[18:02:27] wagnerrp: what are you trying to upgrade from/to?
[18:02:47] wagnerrp: recordedfile should not have any autoincrement fields
[18:03:11] sphery: and recordedfile hasn't been touched in years
[18:03:26] ** sphery thinks this is the utf-8 updates **
[18:03:39] wagnerrp: huh, it does have an autoincrement id field
[18:03:54] wagnerrp: wait, what is recordedfile?
[18:04:02] wagnerrp: we dont use that for anything
[18:04:17] sphery: db update 1241 failing
[18:04:28] sphery: which means an upgrade from 0.21, likely
[18:05:34] sphery: before that update, it seemed to be using chanid/starttime as the key
[18:05:51] sphery: and that's the update that (after the failing statement) adds the auto-increment id
[18:06:00] sphery: no, we don't use recordedfile for anything
[18:06:22] sphery: doq: to pastebin, please: mysql -umythtv -p mythconverg -e 'SHOW CREATE TABLE recordedfile;'
[18:07:56] wagnerrp: sphery: what does that even do? the only mention of that table in the entire codebase is when we delete crap from it in mainserver.cpp
[18:08:03] wagnerrp: which means nothing ever gets added to it
[18:08:12] sphery: right, it's completely unused
[18:08:29] sphery: it was added with thoughts of use especially for mythweb to make it easier to identify info about videos
[18:08:34] wagnerrp: remnant from ages past?
[18:08:39] sphery: but the design was all wrong--thus the new recordedfile schema
[18:08:49] sphery: no, remnant from never used

[18:17:22] sphery: doq: anyway, I can't hang around here waiting to help you, so I'll part saying that the fact that your schema is corrupt leads me to be suspicious of other parts of the schema, too. [19:04:36] doq: not ancient
[19:04:37] doq: sec
[19:04:45] sphery: yeah, that would be pretty old if it's hitting the upgrade that's failing
[19:04:50] doq: MythTV Version  : v0.24.2
[19:05:09] doq: i suppose i should build from source eh?
[19:05:18] doq: just seems odd this would fail
[19:05:20] sphery: 0.24.2 might work
[19:05:21] doq: with an empty db
[19:05:54] doq: ive tried removing the auto increment, removing the whole table
[19:05:55] wagnerrp: was 0.24 before any significant rollup?
[19:06:06] doq: but i just get errors for different reasons
[19:06:18] sphery: doq: so the problem is almost definitely that you had some part of a database on your system before you started mythtv
[19:06:36] doq: i sucked in the .mc file
[19:06:37] doq: that was it
[19:06:49] doq: i can drop the entire db

[19:08:48] doq: sec though, lemme try sphery's rec
[19:09:33] sphery: doq: also, what's the output of: mysql -umythtv -p mythconverg -e 'SELECT @@global.sql_mode, @@session.sql_mode;'

[19:10:14] sphery: I'm wondering if BSD enables strict sql mode...
[19:10:15] sphery: guess not
[19:10:18] wagnerrp: although that will take me several hours to clear out things and upload the image somewhere
[19:10:30] doq: when i run mythtv-setup
[19:10:33] sphery: what version of mysql?
[19:10:37] sphery: is this 6 or something?
[19:10:40] doq: it tells me 'there are also other clients using this database'
[19:10:42] doq: no
[19:10:51] doq: mysql Ver 14.14 Distrib 5.5.22, for FreeBSD9.0 (amd64) using 5.2
[19:10:52] sphery: yeah, the "other client" check was always broken
[19:10:54] doq: k
[19:11:07] wagnerrp: 5.5.22 using 5.2?
[19:11:18] doq: shrug
[19:11:25] sphery: that's basically the same one I did a 0.24-fixes new DB creation with for months without issues

[19:11:57] sphery: ahhh
[19:11:58] wagnerrp: doq: what are you intending to record with?
[19:12:01] sphery: so that explains it
[19:12:07] sphery: you're losing your mysql connection mid-upgrade
[19:12:09] doq: i added the query length stuff
[19:12:13] doq: per that FAQ
[19:12:22] doq: wagnerrp: hoping to use this freebsd box to record
[19:12:26] sphery: then it breaks before completing that "transaction", but since we have no transaction support...

[19:12:34] doq: oh
[19:12:34] wagnerrp: tuners

[19:12:49] doq: hvr-950q
[19:12:50] sphery: firewall or mysql configuration issue, likely
[19:12:58] wagnerrp: using webcamd?
[19:13:09] doq: perhaps, havent gotten that far yet
[19:13:21] doq: no firewall, default my-small.cnf from freebsd
[19:13:21] sphery: FWIW, I could give you a good 0.24 "blank" database
[19:13:30] sphery: but if your mysql connection drops out, it won't work, either :)
[19:13:31] wagnerrp: freebsd has very limited tuner support
[19:13:40] doq: wagnerrp: yeah, i figured
[19:13:42] doq: crossing my fingers
[19:13:43] wagnerrp: but USB tuners should be usable with linux drivers through the webcamd interpreter
[19:13:52] wagnerrp: ive got no experience with it though
[19:13:56] wagnerrp: cant help if you get into trouble
[19:14:00] doq: thats ok
[19:14:19] sphery: wagnerrp: any ideas why he'd be losing the mysql connection mid upgrade?

[19:15:09] doq: so, i ran it again
[19:15:13] sphery: doq: mysql -umythtv -p mythconverg -e 'show variables like "%timeout%";'
[19:15:22] wagnerrp: plenty of disk space? how much memory? what CPU?
[19:15:28] doq: yes, yes yes
[19:15:29] doq: heh
[19:15:57] doq: sphery: http://pastebin.com/7E8pp4Hx
[19:16:00] wagnerrp: to be honest, i run my mysql server on a separate "machine"
[19:16:08] wagnerrp: technically a jail running on the same physical machine
[19:16:21] doq: i might be interested in your my.cnf
[19:16:25] wagnerrp: although i think its running FBSD 8.0
[19:16:39] doq: the bsd ones are much less complete than linux
[19:16:46] doq: from what i can tell, at least
[19:16:48] wagnerrp: im running the large, with a number of options halved
[19:17:05] wagnerrp: although up until a couple months ago, and for several years prior to that, i was running nothing
[19:17:12] wagnerrp: whatever the compiled in mysql defaults were
[19:17:17] doq: anyway, i ran it again and now im back to the Query was: ALTER TABLE recordedfile DROP PRIMARY KEY;
[19:18:12] sphery: right, if you try to re-run after it fails, it will often fail
[19:18:16] doq: ah ok
[19:18:29] doq: how do my timeouts look?
[19:18:31] sphery: you should never re-start an upgrade--always either drop/create or go back to the pre-upgrade backup
[19:19:04] sphery: they're basically the same as mine--except your connect_timeout and wait_timeout are /much/ larger (mine are 10/28800)
[19:19:13] doq: yeah
[19:19:15] doq: i read that in the FAQ
[19:19:19] doq: so i changed them
[19:19:28] doq: it was a problem for <.19 i guess
[19:19:31] doq: figured id try it for the hell of it
[19:19:34] sphery: the net_read_timeout is only 30, which sounds like about the time I'd expect an upgrade to the point it's failing to take
[19:19:43] doq: ok
[19:19:48] doq: maybe bump that up?
[19:19:57] sphery: you could try increasing global.net_read_timeout to 100 or something...
[19:20:00] sphery: as root
[19:20:18] sphery: SET @@global.net_read_timeout=100
[19:20:26] sphery: (that being mysql root)
[19:20:32] doq: ya
[19:20:33] doq: k
[19:20:38] sphery: don't know that it will help
[19:20:45] doq: worth a shot
[19:20:52] sphery: also, what did you specify for your DB "host name" or "ip address"?
[19:21:12] sphery: try using localhost (versus 127.0.0.1) to tell mysql to use unix sockets rather than tcp
[19:21:19] doq: i used localhost
[19:21:21] sphery: (assuming it's currently using an address)
[19:21:38] sphery: ok, so that's not the issue
[19:21:41] doq: hrm, can mysql listen on ip and a socket?
[19:21:53] sphery: yeah
[19:21:56] doq: ok
[19:22:04] doq: i may make sure i've a socket running then
[19:22:10] sphery: and if you use localhost as the host name, it will use sockets in preference because they're /much/ faster
[19:22:20] doq: right
[19:22:27] doq: this server does need to accept outside connections
[19:22:29] sphery: yeah, it may "fail back" to tcp... so check your mysql config
[19:22:30] doq: but if i can do both
[19:22:34] doq: should be no prob
[19:22:37] sphery: yeah
[19:22:55] sphery: I use localhost on my master backend (and DB host) and use tcp for all the rest
[19:23:11] doq: okay socket is enabled
[19:23:31] sphery: make sure you drop/create the db again for additional tests

[19:31:13] sphery: then AT&T happened
[19:31:33] sphery: at least you guys provided precedence for Linux's SCO fight

[19:32:23] doq: sadly even this server would run linux if it's zfs implementation was as mature as freebsds

[21:59:06] wagnerrp: if youre building from source, you should be using a git clone, or at least pull a tarball of head from github
[21:59:19] doq: yeah
[21:59:24] doq: did that instead
[21:59:51] wagnerrp: well if you intend to update semi-frequently, better to have a checkout
[21:59:57] doq: turns out the error has to do with freebsd's libavcodec
[22:00:09] doq: so now i'm watching gcc compile to then build mplayer
[22:00:10] doq: sigh
[22:00:12] wagnerrp: since youre talking about a one-time ~400MB hit
[22:00:22] wagnerrp: rather than a frequent ~100MB hit
[22:00:29] wagnerrp: freebsd's libavcodec doesnt matter
[22:00:40] wagnerrp: we use our own built-in copy of the ffmpeg libraries
[22:00:46] doq: hmm
[22:01:10] wagnerrp: and if youre doing something that is causing it to build against an external version, you are going to have all sorts of problems
[22:01:28] doq: i'm using the configure line you recommended :P
[22:01:29] wagnerrp: since we have a decent sized patch-set and a number of our own fixes to perform each time we resync
[22:01:40] doq: which pulls in another dir
[22:01:48] doq: i should be able to fix this though
[22:01:50] wagnerrp: the configure line im using.... might cause problems if there is a system-installed ffmpeg
[22:01:55] doq: yeah
[22:01:58] ** doq removes it **
[22:02:09] wagnerrp: i had to force those paths to make configure happy with LAME
[22:02:15] doq: yeah
[22:02:20] doq: i want that and x264 as well
[22:02:26] doq: so i also need it
[22:02:52] hadees (hadees!~hadees@72-48-211-16.dyn.grandenetworks.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[22:03:01] wagnerrp: x264 is currently only used by mythffmpeg, and the new HLS code in mythtranscode
[22:03:11] doq: do i need to re ./configure now that i've removed ffmpeg?
[22:03:16] doq: or just make clean
[22:03:30] wagnerrp: dont know
[22:03:35] doq: k, ill just do it
[22:03:50] wagnerrp: part of the reason i build it in a jail is so i can keep all that stuff clean, with just mythtv in that system image
[22:03:55] doq: yeah
[22:04:58] wagnerrp: plus ive got a couple scripts set up to build a tree of new jails, branching through ZFS clones
[22:05:18] wagnerrp: so maybe once a year, i rebuild the whole tree

[23:19:28] wagnerrp: using the DVB DTV tuner type in mythtv-setup, they should be autodetected

[23:20:17] doq: don't see DVB
[23:20:22] doq: just analog v4l capture
[23:20:40] doq: guess I need those linux headers for DVB afterall :P
[23:20:47] wagnerrp: did `configure` build in support for DVB?
[23:21:07] doq: that's where i saw the message about linux dvb headers
[23:22:10] doq: DVB location needs to have linux/dvb/frontend.h [/usr/src/linux-9.0-RELEASE/include]
