[00:29:35] J-e-f-f-A: Jester86-Laptop: No idea... I only use the Component inputs on my HD-PVRs...
[00:30:36] J-e-f-f-A: Jester86-Laptop: And as far as remotely restarting – nope – some folks have created software-controlled AC switches to power-cycle them with a shell command...
[00:31:10] J-e-f-f-A: Jester86-Laptop: I haven't done that yet – I only seem to get a problem with them locking up once in a wile – usually only once or twice a month.
[00:31:11] Jester86-Laptop: J-e-f-f-A, i think i figured out how to cycle the PVR
[00:31:21] Jester86-Laptop: I'm going to power it from the outlet on my cablebox
[00:31:32] J-e-f-f-A: Ah, that would do it. ;-)
[00:31:35] Jester86-Laptop: have the cablebox turn off after recording and turn bck on
[00:31:55] Jester86-Laptop: but.. I cant even get input in from my HDPVR
[00:32:11] Jester86-Laptop: don't know what the issue is. I thought I had it correctly installed/configured
[00:32:38] Jester86-Laptop: when i switch to that input in live-tv it just says 0% signal and eventually goes to the timeout screen
[00:32:44] Jester86-Laptop: any ideas J-e-f-f-A ?
[00:32:47] J-e-f-f-A: *although* – that may or may not work – depending on when the backend connects to the hd-pvr – every time I power-cycle my hD-PVRs, I bounce the backend to re-connect to them.
[00:33:38] Jester86-Laptop: hmm
[00:33:42] J-e-f-f-A: Make sure you have audio connected – it won't capture video if there's no audio signal IIRC... I use Component video and Optical audio. Make sure your settings are correct too.
[00:34:05] Jester86-Laptop: J-e-f-f-A, thats the exact configuration i have
[00:34:09] Jester86-Laptop: .. and no dice
[00:35:14] J-e-f-f-A: Perhaps – check to be sure your STB doesn't have a setting to select the Optical audio out... And make sure you selected the right audio input...
[00:36:01] J-e-f-f-A: In the tuner setup: Default Input: Component Audio Input: SPDIF
[00:36:12] Jester86-Laptop: J-e-f-f-A, all of that configuration occurs in mythtv-setup right.. no config files i need to mess with
[00:36:21] J-e-f-f-A: right
[00:36:32] Jester86-Laptop: yeah J-e-f-f-A i have it set to component and SPDIF
[00:36:43] J-e-f-f-A: I have my timeout set to 3000 (3 seconds) – not sure if that's the default or not.
[00:36:58] Jester86-Laptop: under inputs I have the preset set blank.. channel change is /bin/true faking it for now
[00:37:21] Jester86-Laptop: and the current channel was set for 0, i just changed it to 2 and still nothing
[00:38:13] redxine (redxine!~redxine@p508C3E69.dip.t-dialin.net) has quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[00:39:27] J-e-f-f-A: Do you have listings?
[00:39:36] Jester86-Laptop: what did you set starting channel to?
[00:39:41] J-e-f-f-A: And is "2" a valid channel?
[00:39:46] Jester86-Laptop: by default mine went to zero, i changed it to 2
[00:40:02] Jester86-Laptop: and yes, 2 should be.. i'll try 14 just to be safe
[00:40:27] Jester86-Laptop: it doesn't require its own input group does it?
[00:40:37] J-e-f-f-A: It has to be a 'valid' channel – and changes every time on a successful channel change.
[00:40:41] J-e-f-f-A: re: Input group – no.
[00:41:08] Jester86-Laptop: alright lets see what happens..
[00:41:45] Jester86-Laptop: still getting signal 0%
[00:41:48] J-e-f-f-A: Jester86: Unless you're going to use different inputs on it as seperate tuners – IE: Component for one device, s-video for another – but most (if not all) of us that have them only use them for HD (Component) – anything else is a waste.
[00:41:54] Jester86-Laptop: but i set to the delay to 30000
[00:42:11] Jester86-Laptop: gah
[00:42:12] Jester86-Laptop: nothing
[00:42:36] J-e-f-f-A: And you've confirmed your cable box is outputting video to the component outputs? Maybe you plugged in the cables to the wrong colors, or perhaps the 'passthrough' ports instead of the 'input' ports?
[00:43:11] Jester86-Laptop: yeah it is.. had it plugged into the tv not 3 minutes b4 trying this
[00:43:49] Jester86-Laptop: i am wonder now tho if the audio output of the cablebox wouldnt have changed to analog.. not that that should effect the reception of component video right?
[00:44:01] Jester86-Laptop: or does the HDPVR require audio and video in order to record
[00:44:08] J-e-f-f-A: The jacks on the bottom are the IN jacks.
[00:44:33] J-e-f-f-A: It could – IIRC, the HD-PVR won't record video if you've got it set to SPDIF audio, and it doesn't see digital audio...
[00:44:46] zombor (zombor!~zombor_@kohana/developer/zombor) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:44:52] Jester86-Laptop: hmm
[00:44:55] Jester86-Laptop: let me check that
[00:45:35] J-e-f-f-A: And make sure those audio cables are pushed in all the way – some times the jacks are so snug they don't plug in very easily.
[00:53:24] Jester86-Laptop: alright.. just cycled the HDPVR, STB and HTPC.. we'll know in a bit
[00:55:07] Jester86-Laptop: J-e-f-f-A, ... no dice man
[00:55:30] Jester86-Laptop: any chance you have time to take a look at my logs and help me try to find the issue?
[00:55:46] Jester86-Laptop: it couldnt be caused by my playback settings could it?
[00:56:24] J-e-f-f-A: I'm not sure what to tell you then... You sure you're connected to the right video device? I have udev rules to create symlinks based on serial# since I have two, and they flip-flop on every boot...
[00:57:25] Jester86-Laptop: yeah i've triple checked this thing
[00:58:26] Jester86-Laptop: dmesg | grep hdpvr isn't seeing it..
[00:58:29] Jester86-Laptop: hmm
[00:58:42] Jester86-Laptop: i've had this happen b4 i think i had the syntax/spelling
[00:58:44] Jester86-Laptop: wrong
[00:59:56] Jester86-Laptop: haha n/m .. forgot to re ssh into that box when i cycled it
[01:00:44] Jester86-Laptop: shit J-e-f-f-A ... if i haven't redone filldatabase could that cause it?
[01:01:41] J-e-f-f-A: not if you haven't changed lineups and/or channel listings – and assuming you've done it already.
[01:02:47] wagnerrp: Jester86-Laptop: please watch your language
[01:02:49] Jester86-Laptop: well i had the TWC-Digital input source created but it wasn't assigned to an input device until i added the HDPVR.. and i hadn't rerun mythfilldb since then
[01:03:10] Jester86-Laptop: sorry wagnerrp .. :-\
[01:03:54] J-e-f-f-A: Jester86-Laptop: Yeah, family-friendly here...  ;-) I'd test it outside of myth first – most of this page is quite old, but the 'testing' portion is completely valid! http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Hauppauge_HD-PVR#Testing_the_Driver
[01:04:35] Jester86-Laptop: i tested it.. all checked out
[01:04:49] Jester86-Laptop: tho i did do some stuff trying to get video over firewire
[01:05:00] Jester86-Laptop: so maybe i messed something up.. ill test and let you know
[01:07:18] J-e-f-f-A: Sounds like you should Delete all tuners, and re-create and re-associate it.
[01:07:34] Jester86-Laptop: maybe :-\
[01:07:45] Jester86-Laptop: i really dont want to have to recreate all the rest of my cards lol

[01:10:58] Jester86-Laptop: i'm trying to run cat /dev/video2 > testies.mpg
[01:11:07] J-e-f-f-A: Have you checked the video devices are 'static' – ie: is the HD-PVR always /dev/video0 and the PVR-150's 1 and 2 – or do they 'flip-flop' at boot depending on which order they're detected? Mine did the latter, so I had to setup udev rules...
[01:11:17] Jester86-Laptop: last time i let it record for prob a min and only had a couple seconds of video
[01:11:41] Jester86-Laptop: yes my devices are always landing with the same /dev
[01:12:16] J-e-f-f-A: Does the red capture LED come on and stay on when you're doing your cat?

[01:14:26] Jester86-Laptop: seems to be a problem with my HDPVR.. probably a config setting?
[01:14:38] J-e-f-f-A: what? So, you press "Ctrl-C" to stop your cat, and the light stays on? Not good...
[01:14:49] Jester86-Laptop: yup exactly the case

[01:16:06] J-e-f-f-A: I dunno – try a different USB port – I had problems with one MB with a perticuar USB chipset...
[01:16:14] Jester86-Laptop: i let it record for a very long time and the only thing that shows when i replay the recording is a brief second worth of playback
[01:16:39] Jester86-Laptop: crap.. my HTPC is shoved in there lol
[01:17:02] J-e-f-f-A: I would get constant lockups/errors with one controller, but switched to another one (my MB had 6 or 8 ports), and just tried a different one...
[01:17:22] J-e-f-f-A: You should be able to see what bus it's on via 'lsusb'
[01:17:23] Jester86-Laptop: i have 3.0 and 2.0 back there
[01:17:42] J-e-f-f-A: don't use 3.0 – it didn't work for me – well, it worked, but failed pretty badly.

[02:13:12] J-e-f-f-A: Is it crappy when doing a cat straight to disk too?
[02:13:16] Jester86-Laptop: nope everything was the same
[02:13:34] Jester86-Laptop: no cat seemed to be fine.. playing back thru VLC
[02:14:01] J-e-f-f-A: Humm.. I dunno then – my color has always been perfect on my HD-PVRs...
[02:14:08] Jester86-Laptop: lemme sshfs into that drive and play the live data back on this pc with vlc and see
[02:14:15] iamlindoro: If it's a new HD-PVr, it's likely preloaded with a firmware the linux driver does not yet support (both of the most recent two, in fact)

Until this is resolved, you do not want to upgrade to this version. Version 1.5.7, from June 17, 2010 appears to work. Hauppauge has acknowledged the issue and provided a link to the earlier firmware for non-Windows systems on their support page: Hauppauge HD

[02:16:34] J-e-f-f-A: so can he down-rev the firmware, or does the utility not support that?
[02:16:52] iamlindoro: It's a windows driver installer, and yes, I believe it will allow you to install an old one
[02:16:53] Jester86-Laptop: yup.. issue is def from mythtv recording.. cat no issue
[02:17:02] iamlindoro: The issue isn't with mythtv

[02:18:00] iamlindoro: No.
[02:18:19] iamlindoro: The problem is that the driver addresses the picture controls at a certain memory register where they no longer reside
[02:18:25] iamlindoro: This is direct from Hauppauge.

[04:45:22] blarney: hi there, I have an Hauppauge HVR-2200 tuner card and I'm successfully using the digital side with MythTV, I've compiled the analog support as per http://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hauppauge_WinTV-HVR-2200, /dev/video0 has been created properly and I'm trying to test capture of composite video input using mplayer/mencoder before integrating with mythtv, however I can't seem to find what the name of audio device should be
[04:46:02] wagnerrp: no you dont, or at least you shouldnt
[04:46:16] wagnerrp: you should have a -2250
[04:46:23] wagnerrp: the -2200 is PAL/DVB-T
[04:46:33] wagnerrp: in any case, there is no separate audio device
[04:46:53] wagnerrp: as /dev/video0 outputs compressed MPEG2 video and AC3 audio in an MPEG2 container
[04:47:02] blarney: right, sorry I do have the 2250, the instructions for 2200 are the same as for the 2250 (in terms of compiling)
[04:47:17] blarney: wagnerrp: thanks, I thought so
[04:47:32] wagnerrp: 'cat /dev/video0 > /some/file.mpg' should produce a playable mpeg2 file
[04:47:45] blarney: so it seems to be on the correct "v4l2-ctl -I" gives "Video input : 1 (composite)"
[04:47:48] wagnerrp: note that you will have to fiddle around a bit ...
[04:47:52] wagnerrp: yeah, v4l2ctl
[04:48:11] blarney: right I tried "cat" but when I play it back, it's a blue screen
[04:48:29] wagnerrp: you get a blue screen if there is no signal on that input

[04:49:03] wagnerrp: you need to make sure you get the right one
[04:49:05] blarney: wagnerrp: but I've tested the output from my VCR, into my TV and it comes through

[04:50:36] blarney: "v4l2-ctl -n" shows 0=tuner, 1=composite, 2=svideo, .... etc.
[04:50:39] blarney: wagnerrp: yep, right
[04:50:53] wagnerrp: also, there will be two encoders on that card

[04:51:04] wagnerrp: i dont know off hand which one is connected to the back panel ports
[04:51:13] blarney: ah, maybe I should try composite 2?
[04:51:22] wagnerrp: one set of inputs for one of the encoders is accessible from the rear panel
[04:51:28] blarney: I'm using the breakout cable
[04:51:35] wagnerrp: the other three are accessed through the white headers
[04:51:48] blarney: then there is a second panel (which I haven't setup)
[04:52:02] blarney: I figured that composite 1 would be the one on the main card
[04:52:13] wagnerrp: i dont know off hand
[04:52:16] wagnerrp: i dont have one to test
[04:52:25] blarney: but it doesn't seem possible to set the input via "cat /dev/video0"

[08:06:27] justinh: blarney: AFAIK 'aux' would refer to the audio & video connectors on the tuner board itself
[08:06:48] blarney: justinh: ok
[08:07:24] justinh: you can purchase a bracket with a cable attached to provide connections to the other analogue input on the 2nd encoder
[08:07:45] blarney: justinh: so any idea what they might be wired to via the breakout cable? I noticed that I when I selected 'aux' I got some action in the system log for the saa7164 driver that I didn't see for any other inputs
[08:08:24] blarney: unfortunately I got a zero-length file for: "cat /dev/video0 > file.mpg"
[08:08:54] justinh: well, the av connector on the back panel of the card is likely only connected to one of the channels of the video/audio capture chip on the card
[08:09:54] justinh: so if you want to capture two analogue sources via svideo/composite & stereo RCA audio you'd need one of those brackets
[08:09:55] blarney: justinh: right, because the card came with a second bracket and cable to connect
[08:10:11] blarney: justinh: I only care about getting one source
[08:10:16] blarney: analog, that is
[08:10:29] blarney: that's why I haven't setup the second bracket
[08:10:36] justinh: wouldn't the manual have explained that? anyway... why are you fiddling with this 'aux' input anyway?
[08:10:50] justinh: because you can't get analogue capture working on linux?
[08:10:55] blarney: yep
[08:11:17] blarney: so I'm trying all the inputs to see if I can see anything with mplayer to start with

[08:14:04] blarney: justinh: yep, a home video
[08:14:25] justinh: so is dmesg reporting that devices are registered properly etc?

[08:14:33] blarney: justinh: yep
[08:14:45] justinh: blarney: just ruling it out
[08:15:25] blarney: I can use "v4l2-ctl -n" that gets a list of inputs
[08:15:25] justinh: in the old days the macrovision flag just flicked a register in a video decoding chip to say it was there. capture software would check for it. more recent devices might stop in their tracks
[08:16:08] justinh: (windows capture software would check for it) ;-)
[08:16:21] justinh: AFAIK no linux software has ever done that

[08:18:11] justinh: wagnerrp: yeah but anything less than 20 years old would be so good at reclaiming the sync pulse...
[08:18:34] blarney: justinh: these are mostly home videos I'm trying to digitize and/or very rare, never likely to be released in video or digital form commercial tapes
[08:18:37] justinh: find a datasheet for something like the bt878 :-)
[08:18:49] wagnerrp: well i mean the devices had to be specifically designed to suffer from the decoding flaw
[08:19:24] justinh: nah, decoders had registers – and most VHS machines didn't do much in the way of signal recovery so they lost by default
[08:20:00] justinh: wagnerrp: and if having a register your software was hard-coded to check did the same job ...
[08:21:11] justinh: oh. maybe it was mostly only ATI tuner cards that obeyed the flag

[15:36:14] Unguided: Good morning all! Can someone tell me if the ceton infinitv 4 usb or the silicondust HD homerun prime is supported in mythtv please?
[15:38:02] wagnerrp: quicksilver: for certain definitions of 'HD'
[15:38:26] quicksilver: wagnerrp: well yes. It looked surprisingly good though.
[15:38:27] wagnerrp: Unguided: the Prime and DCR-2650 are both supported in 0.24, and supported very well in 0.25
[15:39:01] wagnerrp: the infinitv is supported using a set of 3rd party patches, and official support for generic OCUR devices is in the works
[15:39:38] Unguided: Ok. Trying to decide between the ceton and silicondust. It seems that silicon dust has never forgotten about its linux community and ceton seems to have left us behind.
[15:40:01] wagnerrp: no, not so much
[15:40:43] wagnerrp: the hdhomerun had an existing access library that was cross-platform and mythtv already supported
[15:40:43] Unguided: So my BEST choice is the HD homerun prime or did I miss what u said?
[15:41:04] wagnerrp: so it was not much work to update that access library, and some other tweaks, to get mythtv recording using the Prime
[15:41:22] wagnerrp: and the fact that several SD employees use mythtv certainly helped
[15:41:35] wagnerrp: yes, currently, the Prime is the best choice
[15:42:06] wagnerrp: however ceton has been writing linux network drivers for their PCIe and USB devices such that they could be used
[15:42:29] wagnerrp: and has been working with one of our devs, with test hardware, to develop the OCUR support
[15:42:55] wagnerrp: the Prime is certainly the better choice for now, but that doesnt mean ceton has left us out in the cold
[15:44:13] Unguided: So the Homerun prime it is. I like the network idea better anyway. That was easy. Thank you for the information. Im trying to get rid of tivo and I believe the HD would better suit my needs. Can I use zentyal server based on ubuntu and install myhtv in the server to act as my backend?
[15:44:47] wagnerrp: Unguided: technically, theyre all network based tuners
[15:45:01] wagnerrp: although the Prime is the only one physically connected over the network
[15:45:25] Unguided: right but the HD does not have to be physically connected to any computer

[16:06:59] wagnerrp: im saying theyre not the way to go unless you have critical-to-business applications that cannot interfere with each other, and its not economical to spend the time to test whether they can safely be run on the same OS instance, or in some isolated container on the same kernel
[16:08:17] Unguided: AH. I see

[16:09:28] wagnerrp: there is something to be said for filesystem isolation for ease of management for dependency conflicts, and kernel/memory/network isolation for security purposes
[16:09:44] wagnerrp: but virtual machines are the sledgehammer you pull out when you dont have time to do it "properly"
[16:11:06] Unguided: Okay. I was just trying to get rid of machines. I can look to see how I can combine machine purposes without virtual machines
[16:11:35] wagnerrp: just run them on the same OS instance, or use something like vservers or lxc
[16:15:39] Unguided: okay
[16:19:15] Unguided: wagnerrp: So u r saying run them on something like proxmox?
[16:19:44] wagnerrp: proxmox?
[16:21:22] wagnerrp: seems proxmox takes the VM hypervisor concept, and applies it to paravirtualization using openvz
[16:21:38] wagnerrp: openvz is an alternative to vservers and lxc on linux
[16:22:05] Unguided: so that would work then right?
[16:22:39] wagnerrp: paravirtualization is the use of filesystem, memory, kernel space, and network isolation, while running on the same kernel image
[16:22:59] wagnerrp: depending on how it manages hardware access it could work
[16:23:12] wagnerrp: although i would avoid vservers and openvz personally
[16:23:13] Unguided: Did I misunderstand what u are saying?
[16:23:35] wagnerrp: both have never been adopted upstream by the kernel
[16:23:53] wagnerrp: and lxc is the first party container system being written in the kernel currently

[19:26:38] smoothifier: it looks like mythbackend is having problems opening its pid file. "MythBackend, Error: Could not open pid file" is this a permissions issue?
[19:27:07] wagnerrp: whatever users runs mythbackend should have write permission to /var/run/mythtv/
[19:27:41] smoothifier: makes sense
[19:33:57] smoothifier: wagnerrp: thanks, i know that was obvious. the pid is in /var/run so i changed the group to mythtv, added the write permission and it worked okay
[19:34:20] smoothifier: would it be better in its own directory, or should i bother changing it?
[19:34:38] wagnerrp: i could see making a new group with write permission, and adding mythtv to that group
[19:34:48] wagnerrp: but i would not make the mythtv group own that directory
[19:35:29] smoothifier: what if i put the pid in /var/run/mythtv and chown mythtv:mythtv to that directory instead?
[19:35:37] wagnerrp: that works
[19:35:42] smoothifier: thanks

[19:53:24] redxine: mythnetvision doesn't seem to want to play anything outside the web browser. What if the media stream is just mpeg4, but streamed over http?
[19:53:34] redxine: the <player> tag didn't work either.

[20:23:05] justinh: oh and it feeds iPlayer. so presumably people wanting into redux are aiming to get past the 'DRM'. Speaking of which, the future of that on mobile devices is looking kinda shaky since Adobe announced they weren't continuing development of flash on mobile platforms
[20:24:12] redxine: the downloader doesn't work either

[20:28:05] redxine: The point is I can't get mythnetvision to work with anything, despite it's being documented as such.
[20:28:35] wagnerrp: could be due to geolocation filtering?
[20:29:24] redxine: No. The problem is purely with the plugin.
[20:29:36] wagnerrp: what grabber?

[20:31:36] iamlindoro: not in any released version of MythTV it can't
[20:32:13] iamlindoro: As previously mentioned, direct playback of http URLs is master only
