[01:38:31] brockp: The subdirectory "tmdb" containing the modules tmdb_api.py (v0.1.3 or greater), tmdb_ui.py,

[01:38:40] brockp: sry, should have used pastebin
[01:38:49] iamlindoro: So your bindings are broken, or you have an old copy of the scripts installed
[01:39:15] wagnerrp: which is even stranger that some would work
[01:39:16] iamlindoro: or you're on 11.04 and not using the right python-mysqldb version

[01:39:51] brockp: Well the backend is running on ubuntu, the front end I am using rightnow is on a mac, maybe a conflict
[01:40:04] brockp: No some movies worked, like 28 weeks later worked
[01:40:06] iamlindoro: brockp: in .24, what is on the backend is meaningless
[01:40:19] iamlindoro: and the bindings do not work on Mac OS TTBOMK
[01:40:21] wagnerrp: have any worked on the machine you are currently on?
[01:40:29] brockp: nope,
[01:40:42] wagnerrp: then yeah... limitation of OSX
[01:40:53] brockp: Ok So I just ran tmdb.py on the ubuntu machine and it printed out some xml,
[01:40:57] iamlindoro: You should do your lookups from the Ubuntu machine
[01:41:02] iamlindoro: yes, as it should
[01:41:11] iamlindoro: You'll need to do your metadata management there
[01:41:27] brockp: coolio I thought I had already tried there, but being a dumb one, I think I used imdb numbers, (old myth user coming back)
[01:41:38] wagnerrp: so just use the ubuntu backend for that task, or install linux on the apple machine, or submit patches to the osx packaging
[01:41:46] wagnerrp: imdb numbers should work fine
[01:41:56] wagnerrp: as long as someone has specified those numbers on themoviedb.org
[01:42:01] brockp: If its python I might be able to fix the osx issues, more later
[01:42:46] wagnerrp: the two metadata scripts currently shipped with mythtv are both python, and they both rely on code built into the python bindings
[01:43:01] brockp: ohh that might cause issues,
[01:43:15] iamlindoro: Though supporting the bindings on OS X would of course be welcome, so feel free to make them work there ;)
[01:43:44] iamlindoro: (though that's more a limitation of the build script/limitation of python pacakges available on OS X, IIRC)
[01:44:01] wagnerrp: i would... but i have no osx machine to actually test on, nor any knowledge of OSX package formatting
[01:44:39] iamlindoro: Actually have a HDHR Prime coming, possibly next week, going to play with a OS X only system for fun
[01:45:31] iamlindoro: With 3 tuners I was thinking to devote two to my production Linux backend, and use one on a distinct OS X setup
[01:45:37] wagnerrp: OSX master backend?
[01:46:00] iamlindoro: yeah, just for fun
[01:46:29] wagnerrp: did you see the commentary in the dev channel last night about executable names?
[01:46:41] iamlindoro: I didn't\
[01:47:05] wagnerrp: certain things like grabbing a lineup from SD use hard coded executable names
[01:47:15] wagnerrp: meaning they dont know to run MythFillDatabase
[01:47:45] iamlindoro: yeah, we have a number of such cases elsewhere in the code where we use ifdefs
[01:47:49] iamlindoro: I saw the ticket
[01:47:54] iamlindoro: didn't seem like this was any different than the others
[01:48:11] iamlindoro: that said, we shouldn't be building camelcase binaries on OS X, that's stupid
[01:48:35] iamlindoro: If one wants to be nonstandard, at least add spaces

[01:51:38] iamlindoro: on that note, is there a way to force the logging stuff to output the logging as the code gets to it? I have added tons of logging when working through issues and had crashes happen *after* log lines, but the logging hasn't gone to the console by then
[01:51:57] iamlindoro: making the logging useless for debugging
[01:52:26] wagnerrp: hehe
[01:52:39] wagnerrp: probably wasnt considered when writing it

[02:59:01] wagnerrp: Beirdo: the reason we couldnt switch to mkv for recordings is because it didnt support mjpeg or rtjpeg, right?
[03:01:53] iamlindoro: I don't think that's ever been the reason
[03:02:17] iamlindoro: since MJPEG/RTJEG could easily be replaced with XViD/H.264/etc.
[03:02:33] wagnerrp: right, thats what i was going to follow up with
[03:03:15] iamlindoro: The real reason is IMO just that there's a ton of code that few of us understand for setting up the container properties and codec options, and NuppelVideoRecorder is a gnarly mess
[03:03:52] iamlindoro: But maybe if we all beg Captain_Murdoch to revive his AVFormatRecorder patch which allowed for user selectable container and codec, and restrict it to a few sane, widely used options for each...
[03:04:28] iamlindoro: There's a ton of MKV container stuff that I've always been eager to use in Myth, like adding chapters at cutpoints when transcoding, etc.
[03:05:55] iamlindoro: There were also those that thought MKV couldn't stream, but they were mistaken, MKV supports streaming
[03:06:23] Captain_Murdoch: so in wagnerrp's comment above, s/recording/transcoding/  ??
[03:06:24] wagnerrp: im somewhat mixed about that
[03:06:47] wagnerrp: i guess it would be nice for portability
[03:06:57] wagnerrp: but i still think stuff like chapters should be stored in the markup tables
[03:07:00] iamlindoro: Captain_Murdoch: Well, would be nice to record straight in to MKV
[03:07:07] iamlindoro: (for framegrabbers, anyway)
[03:07:15] Captain_Murdoch: who uses those? :)
[03:07:20] Captain_Murdoch: besides bruce
[03:07:21] ** iamlindoro raises his hand **
[03:07:26] iamlindoro: oh, framegrabbers
[03:07:28] iamlindoro: not me
[03:07:39] wagnerrp: Captain_Murdoch: i know when jya was looking into it a couple months back, one of the options was just to switch to mkv rather than try to fix nuv
[03:07:42] iamlindoro: but that said, more cards are framegrabbers now than were five years ago
[03:07:50] wagnerrp: i was trying to remember the reasons why we couldnt
[03:08:08] wagnerrp: i thought i remembered something about mjpeg/rtjpeg support
[03:08:18] iamlindoro: since five years ago it was easy to get one of a half dozen good hardware encoders, and now hardware encoders are rare, or on cards that are undesirable for other reasons
[03:08:55] wagnerrp: of course now, there is less reason to use framegrabbers or SD hardware encoders anyway
[03:09:12] wagnerrp: most people are going to HDPVRs for analog capture
[03:09:24] iamlindoro: I suppose that's true, but to the average user, us telling them that they shouldn't use the card whose box says "record from your cable box" just leaves us holding tha bag
[03:09:25] Captain_Murdoch: I don't think anyone cares about mjpeg/rtjpeg support. if someone doesn't have a fast enough cpu to encode to mpeg2 or 4 in realtime they should buy a hardware encoder.
[03:09:43] wagnerrp: s/buy a hardware encoder/buy a new CPU/
[03:09:50] iamlindoro: I don't want to use a framegrabber, but it's difficult to escape the fact that they're out there, and if we're going to support them, it would be nice to use modern containers and codecs
[03:10:20] iamlindoro: (and that explaining why a framegrabber is bad to a use who has already bought one only makes them angry at us-- it "works just fine in windows")
[03:11:08] pyther (pyther!~pyther@unaffiliated/pyther) has joined #mythtv-users
[03:11:25] Captain_Murdoch: my main reason for the initial patch was transcoding, but recording to a libavformat container just came along with it.
[03:12:06] iamlindoro: I wouldn't object to either :)
[03:12:32] iamlindoro: I actually have often thought about a universal (within myth) transcode/record XML format
[03:12:55] iamlindoro: so that you could trade XML profile files with the users list-- "here's a good profile for recording and streaming to the PS3/ipad/whatever"
[03:13:17] Guyverix: That would be pretty slick!
[03:13:18] wagnerrp: doesnt nuvexport already have something like that?
[03:13:22] wagnerrp: how does it handle profiles?
[03:13:33] iamlindoro: Don't think nuvexport has anything like that
[03:14:18] Captain_Murdoch: iamlindoro, with container/codec support, that's just a matter of allowing import/export of recording profiles.
[03:14:25] iamlindoro: anyway, the idea would be transcoding, recording, maybe ultimately uPnP streaming could work from the same profile store, and the user could pick and choose for their needs
[03:14:44] Captain_Murdoch: then you can create the profile chooser and downloader. :)
[03:14:59] iamlindoro: Captain_Murdoch: or maybe just skip the import and always parse from a known dir/SG/whatever for user simplicity
[03:15:32] iamlindoro: Captain_Murdoch: Heh, yeah, you joke but it would be cool :)
[03:15:45] Captain_Murdoch: need to import for backing up, etc..
[03:16:14] Captain_Murdoch: could read real-time but import automatically on use
[03:16:14] wagnerrp: Captain_Murdoch: re: commandlineparser stuff, ive rewritten it with a single shared class for storing information about input arguments
[03:16:17] iamlindoro: I suppose-- maybe just do the import first time it is seen automatically
[03:16:21] iamlindoro: heh, yeah, exactly
[03:16:33] wagnerrp: from here, it should be a lot easier to tag something as part of a group, or as a dependent
[03:16:40] wagnerrp: and print/fail accordingly

[04:59:57] iamlindoro: you can scroll, you can select *some* things, cannot select others-- generally speaking, a mouse is no use with Myth
[05:00:52] wagnerrp: unless, of course, someone were to donate a nice touchscreen pc to one of a handful of devs
[05:01:09] wagnerrp: then i would bet mouse support would get pretty full featured pretty quickly
[05:01:11] wagnerrp: :)
[05:01:38] iamlindoro: That said, one dev already has Myth running on a touchscreen device
[05:01:47] iamlindoro: a trendy one
[05:04:02] wagnerrp: do you know if he actually has it running on one?
[05:04:08] wagnerrp: or just that simulator?

[06:35:14] Beirdo: wagnerrp: yes, I think that was the initial reason
[06:35:36] Beirdo: in particular, MJPEG (which comes from hardware encoders) woulda been an issue
[06:35:58] wagnerrp: ancient hardware encoders?
[06:35:59] Beirdo: but I'm sure a) we can find a way around that and b) almost none are still in use
[06:36:02] Beirdo: yes
[06:36:13] Beirdo: Matrox made some way back
[06:37:01] Beirdo: actually, we could just announce that MJPEG support would be dropped for 0.25, and rip it out, and I'm sure we won't hear a peep.
[06:37:29] Beirdo: Just got home from the Boston/Seattle game, BTW

[06:53:17] Quan-Time: oh ok.
[06:53:23] Quan-Time: is that in the menu options or somethin ?
[06:53:31] wagnerrp: or apparently theres some form of 'compatibility' mode for compiz somewhere in its options
[06:54:04] wagnerrp: the issue is that mythtv simply doesnt have access to the full screen

[17:30:24] brockp: I have some dvd's I ripped using ripit on my mac, It creates a volder OldCheneFamily.dvdmedia which hold Info.json and VIDEO_TS, which looks like a bit for bit copy of the dvd, how do I get mythvideo to read these rips?
[17:30:59] wagnerrp: put the VIDEO_TS folder in a directory listed in the Videos storage group in mythtv-setup
[17:31:01] wagnerrp: and youre done
[17:31:58] brockp: The extra directory caused issues?, wont this clobber all the other dvd's with the same naming?
[17:32:13] brockp: It holds VIDEO_TS.VOB, which each rip has one of
[17:32:21] wagnerrp: you do <root directory>/<movie name>/VIDEO_TS/
[17:34:30] brockp: bah turns out it was working all along, when I first installed, 0.24 it gave me a folder with Info.json as an option, now it plays, gah I swear, always how it works once you finnaly ask for help :)
[17:34:52] brockp: What is your recomdneded rip to vob for linux now that mtd isn't available?
[17:35:20] wagnerrp: i just pull the full ISO
[17:35:44] brockp: It will read .iso from a storage group?
[17:36:12] wagnerrp: unencrypted ones, yes
[17:37:16] brockp: won't do decss on the fly of them? So using dd if=/dev/dvd of=movie.iso won't work with my monty python collection?
[17:37:48] wagnerrp: in 0.24, if you use the local folder definitions, you can use encrypted isos
[17:38:15] wagnerrp: in 0.25 when using storage groups, if the content is mounted locally, mythtv will discover it on the local filesystem, and you can use encrypted isos
[17:38:26] wagnerrp: however encrypted isos are not currently supported for remote streaming
[17:38:51] brockp: hmmm maybe I will switch to that, I only have 1 mirror, but then It won't send to a remote frontend, some testing is required,
[17:40:13] brockp: Ok the video_ts folder that ripit on the mac kicks out appears to decrpyt
[17:42:19] brockp: wow but the quality is awful on the remote front end on my mac, funky, odd as its a raw vob
[17:42:46] brockp: Ok thanks for the help, been a few years of no myth and just bringing it back as a dvd manager, (no cable)

[18:19:57] thwg: wagnerrp: from the frontend; should I use mytharchive?
[18:20:15] wagnerrp: mytharchive is for transcoding outside of mythtv, typically to store on DVD
[18:20:22] wagnerrp: not for transcoding in place
[18:20:35] wagnerrp: however, unless you are trying to support a specific device that has limited playback support
[18:20:39] wagnerrp: why are you transcoding?

[18:22:45] wagnerrp: ATSC recordings can be 'losslessly transcoded'

[18:23:35] thwg: ok; can you point me to something that shows me how I should do that?

[18:27:08] sphery: thwg: make sure you enable the option to "Save original files after transcoding (globally): If enabled and the transcoder is active, the original files will be renamed to .old once the transcoding is complete." in mythtv-setup and then /after/ verifying that the transcode is good, you can manually delete the .old file.
