[00:09:57] EvilBob: I seem to have "lost" my recordings, The files exist but myth does not seem to find them, is there a way to "rescan" them?
[00:12:40] iamlindoro: Not presently
[00:12:51] iamlindoro: though in the future there will be
[00:12:59] iamlindoro: right now your only option is a DB restore
[00:14:30] iamlindoro: well, that and one of the various scripts to reinsert them without metadata
[00:14:48] iamlindoro: myth.rebuilddatabase.pl or whatever it's called
[00:15:12] EvilBob: Right on, repairing the tables helped
[00:15:33] iamlindoro: or that :) So sounds like they weren't lost, you just had a broken table or two
[00:16:04] EvilBob: I found a couple old disks that had recordings from... some point in the past I wanted to add at the same time

[02:38:15] jpabq: Gibby, do you have your HD-PVR configure for AAC or AC3? If AAC, you will have better luck with AC3. If AC3, then it looks like when you change channels the HD-PVR is outputting AAC even though it is told to do AC3. I have this vague memory of someone else mentioning that, but I don't remember the specifics.
[02:39:36] Gibby: just double checked, it is AC3
[02:39:47] Gibby: it was doing it 2 days ago, didn't yesterday no it is todya
[02:41:23] Gibby: and it doesn't do it the first time going into live tv
[02:44:04] jpabq: You could try playing around with adding an appropriate call to v4l2-ctl in your channel change script, to try and force the HD-PVR "back" into AC3 mode. based on your pastbin, it is outputting AAC — or at least afd is interpreting it as AAC.

[06:02:28] Beirdo: now rather
[06:02:54] Beirdo: this will be so much simpler with CUDA
[06:03:07] Beirdo: I can't believe I got it working as well as I did using Cg
[06:03:43] iamlindoro: Beirdo: Not OpenCL for cross-vendor?
[06:04:00] Beirdo: yeah, I'll likely use OpenCL
[06:04:18] Beirdo: it sits on top of CUDA anyways for nvidia

[06:05:55] iamlindoro: wagnerrp: Metadata Lookup is a QObject derived class-- I'd like to run it in the jobqueue but creating a command line around it isn't exactly feasible... is there a path to doing this, or do I need to abandon the thought of using the jobqueue?
[06:06:11] Beirdo: ahhh, that's what the bad_vector's used for... doing scene change detection (also not working)
[06:06:34] iamlindoro: I suppose in a worst case scenario I *could* write a commandline app that just takes a chanid and starttime like everything else, and updates the DB internally...
[06:07:00] Beirdo: the last time I did much on this code base was 2007 or so
[06:07:02] Beirdo: heh
[06:07:31] ** iamlindoro remembers wondering just who this Beirdo guy was, and when he was going get off his ass and finish up this cool GPU transcode tool ;) **

[06:08:09] Beirdo: now... not an issue
[06:08:27] iamlindoro: probably on a number of levels
[06:08:45] Beirdo: it basically has the code for doing denoising, but not 100% right yet, and done in Cg
[06:08:53] Beirdo: heh, yeah, on several levels.
[06:09:32] iamlindoro: ok, I think I'm sold... I guess a mythmetadatalookup app is workable, so long as it does its own DB updates when the lookup completes
[06:10:04] Beirdo: that sounds doable, yeah
[06:13:20] iamlindoro: maybe I'll add a flag that says "replace everything with the looked up values" too
[06:13:45] iamlindoro: so that when someone crashes a DB or reimports a file, all one would need would be title and subtitle or season/ep

[18:22:50] wagnerrp: you should never edit database files directly
[18:23:08] wagnerrp: all manipulation of said files should be done through the database server

[18:24:13] iamlindoro: PS, that's the Database and your packages giving you no end of frustration
[18:24:52] iamlindoro: since mythtv doesn't create or drop databases for you... it just uses the one you tell it to. Mythtv is innocent in all of this.
[18:27:11] kwtm2: create a new password, or a new database?
[18:27:22] wagnerrp: a new password
[18:27:27] wagnerrp: with that command i just gave you

[18:28:01] kwtm2: There's no grant command... you mean literally "grant all on mythconverg.* ..." etc?
[18:28:17] wagnerrp: exactly what i typed
[18:28:21] wagnerrp: that is a mysql command
[18:28:27] wagnerrp: meaning you have to send that command to the mysql server
[18:28:34] wagnerrp: as the root mysql user
[18:28:52] wagnerrp: (note that the mysql root user has no relation to your system root user)

[18:33:15] kwtm2: Ok, so it's more MySQL that I have to learn ...
[18:33:29] kwtm2: Then I should ask about the relationship between MySQL and MythTV.
[18:33:32] wagnerrp: no mysql to learn
[18:33:45] wagnerrp: run 'mysql' on the command line to get into the interactive client
[18:33:49] kwtm2: Well, if I understand you correctly, I have to know how to ...
[18:34:06] wagnerrp: then run that command, substituting the the user, host, and password you want
[18:34:07] kwtm2: ahhh, so I run the mysql command. See? Told you I have to learn about MySQL.
[18:35:00] kwtm2: Well, I really do want to understand it instead of just typing in commands, so if you wouldn't mind me asking ... for a new MythTV installation, where it had previously been (seemingly) working, with channels set up and program guide from SchedulesDirect in place...
[18:35:12] kwtm2: ... why would it say "I
[18:35:28] kwtm2: ... why would it say "that program is already recorded" when I tell it to record a TV program?
[18:35:28] wagnerrp: you are granting all permissions to the mythconverg database (the one mythtv uses by default) to the user to specify
[18:35:50] kwtm2: Sorry, I meant I wanted to know why it failed before. It was only because it failed that I suspected maybe it had the password wrong.
[18:36:12] wagnerrp: if you have the password wrong, mythtv will refuse to start
[18:36:13] kwtm2: So I told MythTV to use a different password, and that's when all hell broke loose
[18:36:17] wagnerrp: as it cannot access the database
[18:36:35] kwtm2: Well, I would have expected that when I told MythTV to go back to the old password, everything would go back to normal.
[18:36:44] wagnerrp: and it should
[18:36:57] kwtm2: Apparently that is not the case. Once MythTV has decided that the password is wrong, it will not work with the old password.
[18:37:09] wagnerrp: it certainly will
[18:37:10] kwtm2: Also it will switch the GUI theme to something ugly which I have never specified or even seen before.
[18:37:16] wagnerrp: how exactly did you tell mythtv to use another password?
[18:37:31] kwtm2: For the MythTV front end, under Utilities/Setup > Setup > General,
[18:37:52] kwtm2: I think the 1st or 2nd screen has the password. I noted the current password, then changed it to a password from a previous installation
[18:38:13] kwtm2: (thinking that maybe there was a persistent password from previous even though I was supposed to have purged everthing)
[18:38:15] wagnerrp: when it failed to connect, it should have opened straight into the database configuration screen
[18:38:25] kwtm2: It did go straight into the db config screen.
[18:38:35] wagnerrp: and if you set the old password back, it should have reverted to exactly the way it was before
[18:38:39] kwtm2: Then it asked me for password, and I tried various combinations but it didn't work.
[18:39:06] kwtm2: Let me ask you this: under the working config Util/Setup > Setup > General, that password that it displays — that would be the current working password, right?
[18:39:27] wagnerrp: should be, yes
[18:39:31] kwtm2: It could not have been using one particular password but displaying a different password on that config screen (which, since I never used before, still worked)?
[18:39:45] kwtm2: Ok, that's what I thought. Well, maybe I copied the password wrong then .. that's the only possibility I have.
[18:39:54] kwtm2: BUt that still doesn't explain the original problem which precipitated this.
[18:40:13] kwtm2: It *was* working, and I said "record this program" and it said "Oh, it's already been recorded, so I won't bother recording again."
[18:40:31] kwtm2: I said "Really? Let's watch the program" and it said "I can't find the program files!"
[18:40:46] wagnerrp: mythtv will tell you a program is already recorded if there is a matching entry already in the database as recorded
[18:40:58] wagnerrp: using whatever duplicate detection method you had set for that rule
[18:41:00] kwtm2: So it looks like I erased all the previous MythTV recordings (as I intended) but there is an entry in the database, which I guess I didn't delete.
[18:41:19] wagnerrp: you erased the recordings directly in the filesystem?
[18:41:31] kwtm2: So, next question for you: can I safely issue whatever MySQL command there is to erase that database? (I get the feeling that the "database" is not just one file.)
[18:41:38] kwtm2: I had to reinstall my system from a failing hard drive.
[18:41:56] wagnerrp: do not think of the database as a file
[18:42:03] wagnerrp: thats a bad concept
[18:42:13] wagnerrp: you should not interact with the database files from the command line ever
[18:42:19] kwtm2: I did not bother transferring my MythTV recordings from previous. It looks like I did, however, inadvertently transfer the database containing MythTV info from the previous, so I'm still haunted by the ghost of my previous recordings.
[18:42:42] wagnerrp: mythtv stores all its information in the database
[18:42:51] kwtm2: wagnerrp: Well, there's more MySQL, then. All this I am learning. Ok, so it sounds like there is some MySQL server running somewhere, and I have to tell it to erase the database.
[18:42:54] wagnerrp: so if you recovered from a database backup, you recovered all those old recording entries as well
[18:43:16] wagnerrp: if you erase the database and create a new one, you erase everything
[18:43:18] kwtm2: I had no intention of recovering from the database backup, but since I copied everything else over, I apparently copied the database, too, whatever that is.
[18:43:25] wagnerrp: which includes all your configurations, all your recording rules, etc...
[18:43:29] kwtm2: That's fine, I am happy erasing the database.
[18:43:41] wagnerrp: then 'drop database mythconverg;'
[18:43:52] wagnerrp: and then follow the installation instructions you used to create the database in the first place
[18:43:53] kwtm2: I really really just want to start over. But apparently the MythTV reinstallation fails to reinitialize the database.
[18:44:31] kwtm2: I didn't really have any installation instructions used to create the database in the first place; I just installed the package (sudo apt-get in Ubuntu). Would that reinstall everything?
[18:45:02] wagnerrp: the seek in #ubuntu-mythtv how to best flush the database and restart
[18:45:05] kwtm2: I guess the answer should be yes, but I am now leery since apt-get purge mythtv should also have erased the database and it failed to do so. Not sure how much to trust those package maintainers at Ubuntu.
[18:45:12] wagnerrp: since they do much of the manual installation tasks for you
[18:45:13] kwtm2: Ah, I didn't realize there was such a channel.
[18:45:39] iamlindoro: packagers are wise not to purge user data when purging packages
[18:45:40] wagnerrp: purging the mythtv package should not delete the database
[18:46:25] wagnerrp: package managers should only delete those files that were created during installation of the package
[18:46:43] kwtm2: Are you sure? i woudl agree with you if we were talking about deleting packages, but to purge means to delete all config info, too.
[18:47:05] kwtm2: But wasn't the mythconverg database created with installation of mythtv? Did it already exist?
[18:47:17] iamlindoro: If you purges office and it deleted all of your document files, would you be happy?
[18:47:17] iamlindoro: It's quite likely that the mythbuntu packagers have a well thought out way of handling your issue, and that you're simply unaware of it... ie, "dpkg-reconfigure something something"
[18:47:32] wagnerrp: kwtm2: the problem is that mythtv is not confined to any specific system
[18:47:59] wagnerrp: lets say you remove the package from some dedicated frontend, and it deletes the database
[18:48:10] kwtm2: iamlindoro: Absolutely!! If I didn't want my document files deleted, I'd have used "delete" not "purge".
[18:48:17] wagnerrp: now youve lost access to all your recordings, and your backend and other frontends will no longer function
[18:48:38] kwtm2: wagnerrp: That's wonderful! I know how to set it up. I don't know how to deal with MySQL demons.
[18:49:01] ripthejacker (ripthejacker!~quassel@27.106.31.196) has joined #mythtv-users
[18:49:43] iamlindoro: kwtm2: then you are the rare user who would rather drop a tactical nuclear weapon than learn how to fix the issue. Again, it's quite likely that your issue has a properly managed solution, you just don't know about it-- and all it takes is asking the people who know it (or finding the right documentation)
[18:50:13] kwtm2: Well, I guess I've set it up before the first time, and I can set it up again. But when that doesn't solve the problem, I don't know how to start with a clean slate.
[18:50:27] wagnerrp: there is a script on the wiki, 'Find_orphans.py', that will remove all orphaned recording entries
[18:50:40] wagnerrp: it will flush out all your existing recordings, and allow mythtv to continue operating as normal
[18:50:54] kwtm2: I believe there should never be a situation where, if someone is willing to start with a clean slate
[18:51:48] wagnerrp: however if you want to start with a clean slate, and dont know how to maneuver the ubuntu package manager to create the database for you
[18:51:52] wagnerrp: http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-6.html#ss6.2

[21:33:03] wagnerrp: s/committed/pushed/
[21:33:20] iamlindoro: local code

[21:36:45] wagnerrp: category is now an integer?
[21:37:10] wagnerrp: no, you reordered stuff
[21:37:23] wagnerrp: oh yeah! this is going to cause 3rd party stuff pain
[21:39:11] wagnerrp: yeah, i dont know why that would cause problems
[21:39:11] iamlindoro: yes, reordered, yes, pain
[21:39:23] wagnerrp: that error comes from a failed import
[21:39:30] wagnerrp: which means the stuff simply isnt there to import
[21:39:33] iamlindoro: not intentional.. mostly done out of a desire to keep like types together... but if I had it to do again...
[21:39:48] wagnerrp: however i dont see anything in there which would cause it to fail to install
[21:40:09] wagnerrp: open python, and see if you can 'import MythTV'
[21:40:25] iamlindoro: yup

[21:48:59] iamlindoro: no, I'm saying the same query fails

[21:52:16] nasa01: Hi, I saw on the mailing list discussion about the "waited 100ms for video buffer" errors (along with pauses in playback). But I didn't see a solution — is there one?
[21:52:23] wagnerrp: the installer is supposed to drop to the default location the OS prefers if the prefix is /usr or /usr/local
[21:52:59] wagnerrp: in any case, do you have a /usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/MythTV/tmdb/tmdb_ui.py?
[21:54:01] iamlindoro: I didn't manually put anything anywhere, if that's what you're asking

[22:19:47] dibbz: i built a new backend and migrated my recordings over, upgraded my deb squeeze frontend
[22:20:03] dibbz: and broke vdpau and audio in the process :(
[22:20:04] DeviceZer0 (DeviceZer0!~hate@unaffiliated/devicezer0) has joined #mythtv-users
[22:21:10] dibbz: i was on 0.24 fixes before the upgrade, and i've taken my old vdpau profilegroups and settings table over to the new install
[22:21:38] dibbz: so, same audio device, same vdpau filters
[22:22:10] dibbz: no dice, the only thing i cant control was the squeeze dist upgrade and new libav*52/ffmpeg packages from debian-multimedia
[22:22:11] wagnerrp: how did you take them over?
[22:22:22] dibbz: as per the wiki
[22:22:28] wagnerrp: link?
[22:22:35] dibbz: oh the settings?
[22:22:47] dibbz: typed them into the mysql prompt
[22:23:00] wagnerrp: uh huh... likely you did it improperly
[22:23:14] wagnerrp: which is why we tell people not to manually change things in mysql
[22:23:35] dibbz: after 12 hours of doing it on the frontend
[22:23:50] wagnerrp: 12 hours???
[22:24:02] dibbz: well most of yesterday wondering wtf i have vdpau blocks
[22:24:14] wagnerrp: theres nothing you do in a recording group that cannot be reproduced in about five minutes
[22:24:21] dibbz: so i rolled back nvidia driver
[22:24:40] dibbz: yes reproduced it many times
[22:24:47] wagnerrp: do you still have the dump of your original database before the upgrade?
[22:25:09] dibbz: yeh i moved the datyabase too, so i'm looking at them side by side
[22:25:23] wagnerrp: what do you mean by 'moved the database too'
[22:25:35] dibbz: mysql dump
[22:25:37] wagnerrp: you mean you took the actual files that the database uses to store files?
[22:25:38] dibbz: copy
[22:25:39] dibbz: import
[22:25:55] wagnerrp: ok, just making sure
[22:26:09] wagnerrp: you never want to make a binary copy of the mysql database files, always do a dump and import
[22:26:12] dibbz: i've beena unix admin for 24 years *cough*
[22:26:27] dibbz: lol sco xenix certified :P
[22:26:31] dibbz: anyway
[22:27:00] dibbz: i guess if i was to have a question
[22:27:17] wagnerrp: i would dump what you currently have, import back from the backup
[22:27:23] wagnerrp: and then run http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Database_Backup_an . . . d_or_backend
[22:27:41] wagnerrp: just take everything, settings and all from the old system
[22:27:44] dibbz: yeh
[22:28:39] dibbz: so thinging crazy like debian-multimedia is evil or nvidia 270/275 breaking vdpau
[22:28:43] dibbz: err nothing
[22:29:01] dibbz: i guess was my real concern
[22:29:04] wagnerrp: there were issues in the early versions of the 260.x driver set
[22:29:13] wagnerrp: but ive not heard any problems with the 270/275 sets
[22:29:14] dibbz: i actually upgraded from 260
