[00:19:00] nutron: oh hi!
[00:19:51] nutron: Ok, so uhh, right, seems .24-fixes rapes my cards. Didn't happen with .23-fixes at all, ever. EVAR!
[00:20:26] nutron: I have documented the problem, when it happens, but it seems like I'm not the only one having this issue according the m/l. Now, what would be the best way for me to resolve this as it makes my backend useless?
[00:20:44] kormoc: nutron, Rape is a serious issue. I think you need to call the police in to investigate
[00:20:52] nutron: What's the best approach for me to see results? Can I git bisect (dunno what I'm talking about there) to see what code changed.. where?
[00:20:58] Beirdo: your cards were asking for it
[00:21:07] kormoc: Dressed like that! FOR SHAME!
[00:21:07] ** nutron cries a little cry **
[00:21:17] nutron: SLUTS!
[00:21:29] nutron: oh reminds me of the dirty dozen...
[00:21:42] Beirdo: now, what seems to be the actual problem here? :)
[00:21:50] nutron: Anyway, for real, since I'm no dev, I don't know how to really do a regression test with git.
[00:22:09] kormoc: Yeah, what does raping a card mean?
[00:22:15] nutron: Ok, basic explanation:
[00:22:27] Beirdo: doing so from 0.24-fixes to 0.23-fixes will not really be feasible due to many changes in db schema, etc
[00:22:50] nutron: When I have more than two recordings happening at the same time, card one changes... card two changes... card three changes ... card two becomes unresponsive.
[00:22:53] kormoc: Beirdo, he could restore his 0.23 db and replay half way
[00:23:08] Beirdo: kormoc: yeah, true.
[00:23:10] nutron: I can make different cards hang, ie. I changed the order in mythtv-setup and still tuner 2 hangs.
[00:23:13] kormoc: nutron, did you update kernel versions as well?
[00:23:22] nutron: kormoc: 2.6.32 for ages
[00:23:31] kormoc: kk
[00:23:49] nutron: no diff, though debian updates the kernel like crazy, nothing I could find suggested any patches were applied to ivtv
[00:23:57] Beirdo: all ivtv?
[00:24:00] nutron: or anything related (from what I can tell at a distance)
[00:24:23] kormoc: nutron, if you drop out a card (so it's only two) does it still lock up a card?
[00:24:42] nutron: Well the patches debian applies are named accordingly.. for eg. if the sky2 driver was backported due to a bug, it'd be named something like 90-sky2-regression.patch
[00:24:48] nutron: so I didn't see ivtv in there
[00:25:23] sphery: nutron: these are USB tuners?
[00:25:37] nutron: kormoc: humm, haven't tried that at all, b/c .23 plugged away happily with these same cards. Though I did believe my problems stemmed from too much load, I can now suggest that .. that's not the case.
[00:25:41] nutron: sphery: pci

[00:26:10] nutron: debian
[00:26:33] nutron: so could be
[00:26:36] nutron: very similar
[00:26:48] sphery: I was thinking there was some issue with ivtv on some *buntu version... I think wagnerrp mentioned something once.

[00:27:18] nutron: I get zero dmesg output... nothing, the card just hangs
[00:27:32] sphery: but I don't know any details
[00:27:58] nutron: so but.. just to be clear... the first card can hang as well and so can the third...
[00:28:07] nutron: depends on what order myth starts recording in
[00:28:20] nutron: so if it's 2 – 1 – 3 then card 1 will hang
[00:28:28] Beirdo: weird
[00:28:28] nutron: never the last one and never the first one
[00:28:31] sphery: yeah, it sounds like a low-level issue with drivers or v4l subsystem to me
[00:28:36] nutron: feels like a deadlock or ...?
[00:28:43] Beirdo: or a motherboard crapout

[00:30:49] nutron: then ivtv would complain that the program wasn't reading fast enough :/
[00:30:51] kormoc: nutron, pastebin modinfo ivtv
[00:30:53] nutron: nothing
[00:31:07] kormoc: if only there was a site like modinfo.org that had a database of all the module information....

[00:32:41] nutron: what's the myth paste?
[00:32:41] kormoc: and my database of them is sitting in a .sql.gz file, a tad hard to pull out

[00:33:12] nutron: kormoc: http://mythtv.pastebin.com/3mFPYjsZ
[00:34:02] kormoc: nutron, welp, there's a debug option that I'd turn on if I was you and see what it says

[04:31:25] nutron: is there any difference to the 24-fixes branch on the old svn and the new git? ie. should I try it?
[04:31:42] nutron: I don't see any updates on the wiki, so I'm assuming backporting fixes is... done?
[04:31:42] wagnerrp: nutron: about two months worth of fixes

[04:44:10] sphery: _cal_: no, I want you to unmap 1 from TV Frontend/DAYRIGHT

[04:48:03] sphery: cool
[04:48:09] clgshaft: Hey guys. I had asked a question a couple weeks ago about an issue I am having with watching live tv. If I leave the backend running all day and try to watch tv it says it cannot find the backend, check ip. However I can watch recordings, and my nas, and have just discovered it also records the scheduled recordings
[04:48:56] clgshaft: Any idea what would cause this?
[04:49:13] sphery: clgshaft: no clue
[04:49:23] sphery: sounds like a ticket that was submitted
[04:49:33] sphery: http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/9526
[04:49:40] sphery: (or was that your ticket?)
[04:49:58] clgshaft: sphery: You looked at my logs before
[04:50:15] clgshaft: I've never submitted a ticket
[04:50:23] sphery: clgshaft: you /do/ have mythtv configured with an IP address for the settings that say IP address, right? I.e. you didn't use any host names when configuring MythTV, did you?
[04:50:32] sphery: (since we don't support name resolution in MythTV)
[04:50:54] clgshaft: It is an ip
[04:51:00] sphery: hmmm
[04:51:07] sphery: do you have socket errors in the logs?
[04:51:16] sphery: frontend and/or backend logs?
[04:51:27] _cal_: well crap lost all my channel icons. apparently a db backup doesn't back those up.
[04:51:37] wagnerrp: you know, im thinking that in order to avoid the GIL, its going to be easier to just write a new socket library in straight c++, and hook into it with cython
[04:51:53] wagnerrp: rather than try to rig something together entirely within cython
[04:52:01] sphery: channel icons are files on the file system... db backup will contain the file path, so if you lose the files, you'll lose icons
[04:52:18] sphery: GIL?
[04:52:22] kormoc: sphery, that ticket is bordering on insanity
[04:52:28] sphery: kormoc: yeah, makes no sense to me
[04:52:47] sphery: because a) we don't support name resolution
[04:52:56] wagnerrp: sphery: Global Interpreter Lock... its what prevents python code from being multithreaded
[04:52:58] kormoc: sphery, Global that i word that escapes me how to spell lock
[04:52:59] clgshaft: I am thinking it may be linked to my nas. I didn't have it mounted yesterday and I did t have the issue, last night I mounted and when I came home today live tv would not work
[04:53:00] sphery: and b) even if we did, we couldn't take down libnslookup from MythTV
[04:53:28] kormoc: sphery, he shows a dumped core. That might be the best way to figure out WTF is going on
[04:53:49] sphery: only way I could see MythTV having an effect on name resolution is if we were DoS'ing a name server
[04:54:01] sphery: or, more likely, just causing network issues

[05:03:11] sphery: (which is easy to do as there's a difference between /path/to/dir and /path/to/dir/ and such--see man page)

[10:40:23] justinh: quicksilver: IIRC there was some work done for XBMC to get hw acceleration going – and I think there's been some for ffmpeg on that platform too – but I very much doubt it'll be worth looking at it. I saw a screenshot of mythfrontend running on a beagleboard but that doesn't mean to say it was a nice user experience
[10:41:20] justinh: I'm sure a lot of us would love a capable frontend the size of a ciggy packet that's powered by the RF in the room but er....
[10:42:53] quicksilver: justinh: well, the ffmpeg patches to support the onboard chipset are merged in to mythfrontend
[10:43:05] quicksilver: and, to be clear, I was only thinking of SD.
[10:43:16] quicksilver: justinh: but, what would be a saner cheap/small frontend solution?
[10:43:58] justinh: cheap//small/easy – an immutable combination IMHO
[10:44:23] justinh: some might say Atom
[10:44:39] justinh: not as cheap as the Beagleboard but.. inifitely more sane IMHO

[22:47:05] kormoc: k4ever, Sure, but you really should separate OS issues from myth ones.
[22:47:31] kormoc: devinheitmueller, I have a feeling this is his first linux experience so might need a bit more of a walk-through
[22:47:47] devinheitmueller: There's a known issue where MythTV times out on livetv startup with the au0828 because of the initial xc5000 loading time.
[22:48:08] wagnerrp: k4ever: the issue is the all the mythtv developers already have systems set up and dont need to do so again. further, they already know what theyre doing, and exactly what needs to be done to set up mythtv

[22:49:42] wagnerrp: its a problem that plagues many open source projects with no trained UI designers
[22:50:29] wagnerrp: we know what makes sense to us, and its hard to think of what would make sense to someone who doesnt understand the terminology
[22:51:48] k4ever: what trip me up was the fact that the permission were set right. didn't know which user (me, mythv) was trying to write to the folder.
[22:52:18] k4ever: here is the output from the frontend: http://mythtv.pastebin.com/vj6ZVxie
[22:52:57] devinheitmueller: Yeah, this is the 7000ms startup issue. Add that xc5000 modprobe option.

[22:58:19] k4ever: thanks. just found it in google also. long day
[22:58:30] kormoc: Beirdo, so FYI, the last ipv4 was assigned to the regional IRs and so they're still available for distribution
[22:58:32] devinheitmueller: Then if you want to see if it's working run tvtime, exit, and then run tvtime again. The first tvtime startup will take about ten seconds before you see a picture. The second startup will show TV instantaneous.
[22:59:31] devinheitmueller: Look at the bright side, *I* had to recompile mythbackend, break out GDB and debug the kernel driver to figure out what the problem was.
[22:59:33] devinheitmueller: :-)
[22:59:53] Beirdo: kormoc: yeah, that's what I was saying. No /8 left, they are all assigned to registrars

[23:00:09] Beirdo: :)

[23:23:54] sphery: devinheitmueller: https://github.com/MythTV/mythtv/commit/925077254 (was the backport to 0.24-fixes), where RingBuffer::kLiveTVOpenTimeout = 10000;
[23:24:30] devinheitmueller: sphery: Well, that's good, assuming ten seconds was actually enough (I don't remember). In k4ever's case though, he clearly has an older rev since I can see it timing out after 7000ms.
[23:24:32] sphery: seems there are many places that had timeouts, we had a default timeout (2s) in a chain that was affecting live tv
[23:24:45] sphery: yeah, it's brand new
[23:24:51] sphery: most -fixes users won't have it
[23:24:57] devinheitmueller: gotcha.

[23:25:27] sphery: and many *buntu users are on 0.23-fixes, too, so they won't have it

[23:26:34] sphery: heh, yeah
[23:26:48] MylesMan: my tuner card isnt being recognized at boot i have to modprobe then rerun mtv setup/capture cards to initialize it any ideas?
[23:26:57] sphery: today I've done 2 extraneous changes rather than actually work on the new functionality patches I'm doing for MythTV
[23:27:04] k4ever: stopped backend. tvtime still hangs. did i do a good job of creating the modprobe.d config files? seem to stop working after i created them
[23:27:09] devinheitmueller: sphery: I did finally kill a couple of hours yesterday and get the MediaMVP-HD working with MythTV's uPNP server though.
[23:27:18] kormoc: MylesMan, add it to your module boot load list?

[23:28:36] sphery: seems a lot of people are trying to find good UPnP clients so they don't have to "buy a full computer"
[23:29:41] devinheitmueller: Yeah, I really would have liked the MediaMVP-HD to be the "go to" product for MythTV users, but I haven't invested enough time to really have that expectation.
[23:29:44] sphery: OK, so now that I've done stalled with a couple of extraneous changes, I think I'll switch to a different new-functionality patch and see if I can make some progress on it
[23:30:35] sphery: devinheitmueller: yeah, would be great if some of those who want cheap upnp clients would invest some time in doing patches that allow it better access to mythtv functionality (including things like skip lists and cut lists)
[23:30:39] k4ever: only two files in /sys/module/xc5000/parameters. debug which is set to 1 and no_poweroff which is also set to 1

[23:31:38] k4ever: i rebooted
[23:31:40] devinheitmueller: sphery: I do like that the device only consumes about 5 watts while doing HD playback, and there is no crap for users to go through to make HDMI audio or remote control support work (two of the most common problems users have getting a new frontend working).
[23:31:47] k4ever: linux mint debian edition
[23:33:05] sphery: yeah, configuration of system-level stuff is still a huge challenge (and MythTV doesn't make it much better by supporting infinite varieties of low-level configurations--provided you give MythTV the right info)

[23:36:09] sphery: ok, for those who haven't bought in to the git hype, yet, I have to admit that it made finding the commit that removed PlaybackBox::cutDown() significantly easier. Used git grep 'PlaybackBox::cutDown' $(git rev-list --all — programs/mythfrontend/playbackbox.cpp) — programs/mythfrontend/playbackbox.cpp to find the last revision of playbackbox.cpp that had the function, then used git rev-list --all — ...

[23:40:50] sphery: kormoc: yeah, I'm sure it's possible to do something similar. I just liked that I could use the output of git rev-list (which shows all the revisions for the file in question) in the git grep command
[23:41:12] sphery: I don't know if svn's stuff is similarly "chainable"
[23:41:31] kormoc: not without using a little bash magic
[23:41:48] sphery: basically, I grep'ed one file and only the revisions where that file changed

[23:43:35] sphery: with git, I couldn't really do that since I didn't know the hashes to use for "very old revision", etc. So, if nothing else, git's complexity made me search for a better approach
