[02:45:22] johnsu01: so, somehow mythvideo has made all the pathnames for my video files wrong — it's added an extra subdirectory to the path which does not exist
[02:45:22] johnsu01: it thinks they are in movies/usb, when they are really just in movies/
[02:45:35] johnsu01: there was at one time a usb subdirectory, but it's gone from the filesystem now
[02:46:01] johnsu01: running "Scan for changes" hasn't removed the usb directory, though it has still discovered the new movies which live in movies/
[02:46:05] wagnerrp: evening mattwj2002
[02:46:30] mattwj2002: how are you?
[02:47:15] wagnerrp: bit tired
[02:47:47] wagnerrp: somehow we had awful traffic jams
[02:48:00] wagnerrp: the white death descended on our city
[02:48:15] wagnerrp: and half an inch of snow brought the highway to a standstill
[02:48:29] mattwj2002: only half an inch
[02:48:30] mattwj2002: ?
[02:48:34] mattwj2002: where do you live?
[02:48:34] wagnerrp: about that
[02:48:41] wagnerrp: cincinnati
[02:48:46] mattwj2002: I live in Minneapolis that is nothing
[02:48:50] wagnerrp: weve already had about 8–10 inches this year
[02:48:54] wagnerrp: half an inch is nothing here either
[02:49:01] wagnerrp: yet.... somehow it was
[02:49:17] johnsu01: sigh, nm, while describing the problem, I figured it out, as usual :)
[02:49:27] johnsu01: skyline chili forever! :)
[02:50:19] wagnerrp: johnsu01: what was it? no idea what could have caused a spurious directory to remain after a scan
[02:50:42] johnsu01: wagnerrp: the directory did actually exist still, it was a symlink and I was looking in the wrong place
[02:50:55] johnsu01: although, I don't understand why it couldn't play the videos
[02:50:58] wagnerrp: heh
[02:51:17] johnsu01: since the symlink did point from the base video directory to the right place, where all the movies are
[02:51:37] wagnerrp: only one instance of a file can exist in the database at a time
[02:51:46] wagnerrp: meaning you cant get multiple copies of something by symlinking it around
[02:52:05] johnsu01: this was something that changed during the last major upgrade
[02:52:08] wagnerrp: files are hashed to detect moving them around, but results in that side effect
[02:52:28] johnsu01: to 24
[02:52:40] wagnerrp: hashes were added to 0.23
[02:53:00] johnsu01: it had been working for a long time before that (which is why I'd forgotten what the actual video directory was)
[02:53:54] wagnerrp: are you still unable to play the files? or is everything working now?
[02:54:22] johnsu01: hm, well it's looking in the right place now, but still says "Seek failed" — might be a permissions issue..
[02:54:46] wagnerrp: the frontend says seek failed?
[02:55:02] nutron (nutron!~dserban@S010600195b2f0f96.ok.shawcable.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[02:55:13] wagnerrp: note that the frontend is only accessing a stream from the backend
[02:55:20] wagnerrp: the backend is what actually opens up files
[02:56:06] johnsu01: frontend says seek failed
[02:56:11] nutron: Hrrm, why would mythpreviewgen continuously segfault according to the logs? Lots of first frame is no keyframe warnings (assuming this is mythcommflag) ... feels like my seek tables are pooched or I'm using the wrong container format... or?
[02:56:34] johnsu01: not a permissions issue
[02:56:56] wagnerrp: the preview generator has never been particularly stable, which is why it is offloaded to a separate process that can die on its own
[02:57:07] johnsu01: I don't see any error in the backend log at this verbosity..
[02:57:21] wagnerrp: frequent problems are trying to run the preview generator before enough data has actually been recorded
[02:57:52] johnsu01: it found all the videos and updated their metadata from imdb, but won't play them
[02:58:13] wagnerrp: themoviedb.org , imdb doesnt let us scrape their site anymore
[02:58:21] nutron: wagnerrp: do you remember why the video previews were taken out?
[02:58:46] wagnerrp: nutron: because the UI was rewritten, and no one has written a new (proper) video widget
[02:58:58] wagnerrp: the old video preview was really an ugly hack
[02:59:02] johnsu01: wagnerrp: ah, right
[02:59:12] wagnerrp: it wasnt so much a video, as a sequence of pngs
[02:59:35] wagnerrp: which is why CPU load was so high running such a small video preview
[02:59:43] wagnerrp: and also why it was only a couple seconds worth, looped
[03:00:15] jamesd2 (jamesd2!~jamesd@CPE-72-131-65-50.wi.res.rr.com) has joined #mythtv-users
[03:00:40] nutron: wagnerrp: ahh, ok. so theoretically the internal player couldn't be used in say the same context as pip?
[03:01:10] wagnerrp: previously, the UI was completely detached from the video player and OSD
[03:01:22] wagnerrp: with 0.24 and mark's work, they are now combined as one set of code
[03:01:43] wagnerrp: so before, no, you couldnt use the existing player from within recorded programs
[03:01:58] jamesd_laptop (jamesd_laptop!~jamesd@CPE-72-131-65-50.wi.res.rr.com) has quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[03:04:14] nutron: ok
[03:04:32] nutron: and mythpreviewgen is just hella buggy?
[03:04:49] wagnerrp: more it doesnt like partial recordings
[03:05:04] wagnerrp: it generally works just fine if you run it after the recording is finished
[03:05:40] nutron: Gotcha, well I deleted all png's and on rebuild it kept dying... like thousands of times...
[03:05:47] wagnerrp: but there are problems with accessing short recordings, and problems accessing recordings with bad seek data (which can often happen at the beginning) that it doesnt handle
[03:06:04] nutron: Ok, and seek data is rebuilt using commflag
[03:06:06] nutron: right?
[03:06:11] wagnerrp: yes
[03:06:20] Beirdo: mythcommflag --rebuild
[03:06:24] Beirdo: hehe
[03:06:26] nutron: :o
[03:06:30] Beirdo: Howdy guys
[03:06:31] nutron: Complex!
[03:06:39] nutron: Hola.
[03:06:52] Beirdo: well, you gotta tell it which recording too :)
[03:07:01] nutron: WHAT?!!?!?! that's crap
[03:07:10] nutron: how about *?
[03:07:11] nutron: :P
[03:07:20] wagnerrp: Beirdo: do you?
[03:07:33] Beirdo: do I?!
[03:07:37] wagnerrp: i thought there was one of those commands that if you gave it nothing
[03:07:43] Beirdo: ooooh
[03:07:43] wagnerrp: it would just loop through and do everything
[03:07:54] Beirdo: I'm not sure, it might rebuild for all
[03:08:01] Beirdo: I'm not about to test that theory
[03:08:09] wagnerrp: heh
[03:08:10] Beirdo: it will do some operations for all though
[03:08:46] nutron: Should the table for seek data be over a gig in size?
[03:09:00] wagnerrp: how many recordings do you have?
[03:09:05] nutron: 2000+
[03:09:09] wagnerrp: then yes
[03:09:13] nutron: k
[03:09:21] Beirdo: heh
[03:09:37] wagnerrp: remember, its one 44 byte (i think) entry for each key frame
[03:09:52] wagnerrp: mpeg2 recordings will typically have two of those per second
[03:09:52] nutron: The system's feeling sluggish though, can't help but think it's the massive backend logs that's causing the iowait
[03:10:16] nutron: rrrrrough...
[03:10:31] johnsu01: wagnerrp: hm, with -v all there are no messages at all when I try to play a video
[03:10:42] wagnerrp: on the backend?
[03:10:46] Beirdo: nutron: you have loggging on in the db?
[03:10:53] wagnerrp: do you have mythvideo set up for local folders or storage groups?
[03:10:54] nutron: yeah
[03:11:00] johnsu01: wagnerrp: correct, on the backend
[03:11:01] nutron: wagnerrp: me or johnsu01 ?
[03:11:09] johnsu01: wagnerrp: I'm not sure..
[03:11:11] wagnerrp: yeah, binary logs are generally not advised
[03:11:19] wagnerrp: just do frequent backups
[03:11:39] nutron: wagnerrp: oh wait, I thought he was asking about backend logs.. (row entries in the db)
[03:11:39] wagnerrp: mysql binary logs can get very massive very fast
[03:11:40] Twiggy2cents (Twiggy2cents!~darren@66.87.2.199) has joined #mythtv-users
[03:11:46] Beirdo: if your mysql is logging, that would be a good place to start tweaking :)
[03:12:03] nutron: ugh, no .. no beenary logs
[03:12:06] nutron: I know better
[03:12:17] wagnerrp: they are transaction logs, and are required if you want to recover up to a specific commit
[03:12:24] wagnerrp: but we dont really need that with mythtv
[03:12:34] nutron: nope, off. First thing I did
[03:12:41] nutron: on that backend
[03:12:47] wagnerrp: johnsu01: did you define the directories for mythvideo in mythfrontend or in mythtv-setup?

[03:14:53] nutron: hmm buying the hib has done wonders for my productivity :(
[03:15:04] wagnerrp: hib?
[03:15:17] nutron: wagnerrp: humble indie bundle
[03:15:23] wagnerrp: steam?
[03:15:29] johnsu01: wagnerrp: currently just the one, but in the past I have experimented with having multiple frontends for this same backend
[03:15:39] johnsu01: currently the only frontend is on the same box as the backend
[03:15:51] wagnerrp: if you have any intention of using multiple frontends, you will want to switch to storage groups
[03:15:59] wagnerrp: which will allow the backend to serve up all mythvideo content
[03:16:10] johnsu01: oh yes, I remember that being a problem before :)
[03:16:13] wagnerrp: but with just a single frontend and local content, the local folders you are using currently are fine
[03:16:21] nutron: wagnerrp: naw, 10 games, pay what you want, assign the funds as you want and they're pretty freakin' awesome games. I guess it is available on steam... though I think it's over. Love that the linux folk doubled the windows folk in dollars.
[03:16:32] wagnerrp: it also means mythvideo is not touching the backend at all for mythvideo
[03:17:26] johnsu01: okay, let me try more debug on the frontend
[03:17:28] wagnerrp: so whatever the problems are, they are in the frontend and not the backend like i originally said
[03:17:28] nutron: I was gonna ask this because I haven't actually done it yet. I have a single frontend currently (in prod) but have 3 more that are about to come online. When setting recording profiles/defaults and other "global" type settings that affect a single backend, does one frontend become master for settings?
[03:17:49] wagnerrp: no
[03:18:00] nutron: ok so each can override then?
[03:18:07] wagnerrp: for global settings, yes
[03:18:16] nutron: a'ight, simple enough

[03:20:04] wagnerrp: someone already managed to do it in 1700 lines
[03:20:14] nutron: oh that was it! lol screwed that one up again.
[03:20:16] johnsu01: wagnerrp: okay, for one thing, it's using mplayer for a DVD directory, where it used to use internal
[03:20:25] wagnerrp: http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/dev/187428#187428
[03:20:30] johnsu01: internal is still the default player
[03:20:37] Beirdo: 17, 70... sounds the same
[03:20:39] wagnerrp: 'Internal', yes
[03:20:39] johnsu01: so I guess it's not recognizing that as a dvd anymore
[03:20:50] wagnerrp: these are VIDEO_TS folders?
[03:21:00] johnsu01: wagnerrp: they are parent folders with a VIDEO_TS subdir
[03:21:05] wagnerrp: yeah
[03:21:06] johnsu01: wagnerrp: for example SCORE/VIDEO_TS
[03:22:00] johnsu01: dvd player is definitely set to Internal
[03:22:13] johnsu01: but "default player" is mplayer
[03:22:13] nutron: hmm, mpeg ts vs ps? should I leave the container as ps? I'm concerned about the no keyframe (thousands upon hundreds upon thousands of lines complaining about first frame is no keyframe) bah.

[03:23:27] wagnerrp: ideally, you should be using Internal for everything
[03:23:37] wagnerrp: and ive never tried using VIDEO_TS folders
[03:23:44] wagnerrp: only single files and ISOs
[03:23:51] johnsu01: it's worked for many years :)
[03:24:34] johnsu01: well, changing the default player to internal works
[03:24:36] wagnerrp: over the holiday, i converted most of my older rips (assorted avi/mkv/mp4) over to ISOs
[03:24:50] wagnerrp: has to be a capitol I
[03:25:07] johnsu01: yes, sorry, I used capital in the settings
[03:25:14] johnsu01: and it's now playing
[03:25:39] wagnerrp: so the seeking issues were mplayer problems
[03:26:25] Beirdo: wagnerrp: *if* that setting stays, we really should make it case insensitive ;0
[03:26:34] Beirdo: so many people have messed that one up
[03:26:44] johnsu01: wagnerrp: well.. mplayer wasn't being given a file to play, it was being given a direcotry
[03:26:59] johnsu01: wagnerrp: and since it wasn't with the dvd:// prefix, it wasn't looking for video_ts
[03:27:16] wagnerrp: yeah, external player support has been largely abandoned since 0.22
[03:27:24] wagnerrp: if it works, great
[03:27:31] johnsu01: so in my mind there is still the question of why Internal wasn't chosen to begin with — seems like maybe a regression
[03:27:33] wagnerrp: if it doesnt, that just means its time to get removed
[03:27:53] wagnerrp: probably a carry-over from an old install before Internal was the default
[03:28:09] johnsu01: wagnerrp: Internal was set to be the DVD player
[03:28:28] johnsu01: wagnerrp: And now, it clearly recognizes the directory as a DVD, from the log messages
[03:28:39] wagnerrp: dont know then
[03:28:43] johnsu01: so the question is, why wasn't myth using Internal to begin with, even if mplayer was set as the default for other filetypes?

[04:15:16] wagnerrp: yeah, i saw that
[04:15:21] Twiggy2cents: I am guessing that you can index a video after its been made?
[04:15:25] wagnerrp: i dont remember having such problems last time i did that
[04:15:42] wagnerrp: easiest would probably be just to remux it
[04:15:54] wagnerrp: or you might be able to fix it by generating a seek table

[04:16:13] wagnerrp: off the top of my head, i could come up with an ffmpeg line to use
[04:16:20] wagnerrp: but you would only get the first audio and first video track
[04:16:24] wagnerrp: probably not what you want
[04:17:28] wagnerrp: ffmpeg -i <old.vob> -acodec copy -vcodec copy -target film-dvd new.vob
[04:17:50] Twiggy2cents: so basically when I used avidemux to make an index file then convert to mpeg 2, I essentially did the same thing that you are saying? Aside from it not being a vob when its done?
[04:18:12] wagnerrp: a VOB already is mpeg2
[04:18:25] wagnerrp: but it seems yes, you just reindexed and remultiplexed it
[04:18:32] Twiggy2cents: So then you can rename a VOB to .mpg and it would work the same?

[04:19:29] wagnerrp: rather than relying on an extension
[04:19:40] Twiggy2cents: I guess what I was asking then, is that "is the vob container the same as the mpeg 2 container"
[04:19:57] wagnerrp: VOB is a slight modification on (i think) an mpeg2 ts
[04:20:08] Twiggy2cents: okay

[04:21:57] Twiggy2cents: streaming from what?
[04:22:13] Twiggy2cents: I kinda figured that anytime the video is playing it's streaming
[04:22:38] wagnerrp: multicast and broadcast streams
[04:22:49] wagnerrp: all digital TV uses TS formats
[04:23:03] wagnerrp: it allows you to pick up at any point in the stream and start playing
[04:23:14] wagnerrp: while PS requires you to read the header at the beginning
[04:23:21] Twiggy2cents: oh. So if I were to choose one to convert to, I should use PS?
[04:23:58] wagnerrp: PS will be noticeably smaller than TS
[04:24:24] Twiggy2cents: Ohh so it wont affect anything other than size?
[04:25:46] Beirdo: not terribly :)

[06:32:50] wagnerrp: no, im saying if your board is set up to use AHCI
[06:33:01] wagnerrp: adding a new drive could result in the existing drives being reordered
[06:33:16] wagnerrp: meaning your boot drive used to be on /dev/sda, but is now on /dev/sdb
[06:33:24] wagnerrp: in which case your fstab would be incorrect
[06:33:37] wagnerrp: boot would fail, and init would drop you into single user mode to fix the problem
[06:33:42] Cru_: ah. the command you had me type in says the correct sda1, sda2, etc
[06:34:10] wagnerrp: if you unplugged the second drive, then you would only have one drive listed there
[06:34:13] wagnerrp: /dev/sda is the drive
[06:34:21] wagnerrp: /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2 are partitions on that drive

[06:34:32] Cru_: yeah, and sda5
[06:34:45] Cru_: which is what I had before i did the clone/adding hd
[06:34:45] wagnerrp: you can look in /etc/fstab to see where those are mounted

[21:24:55] kcorcoran_: is this the only way to watch tv via mythtv?
[21:26:07] Chicago: Yeah, it's the only way to go.
[21:26:37] wagnerrp: no, its the only legal way to get guide data for cable channels in north america
[21:26:43] wagnerrp: and mythtv doesnt function well without guide data

[22:49:55] DHR: titled "Default" storage group directories. It has the path to my old directory on the next line, and the one after that is "add new directory"
[22:50:45] [R]: if you seledt add new and it shows you the exiting dir, your'e not selecting new
[22:50:54] [R]: the theme you are using might be horribly broken
