[01:39:56] iamlindoro: As your average user is just going to say, oh, there's only one theme, I'd better go look for more on google...
[01:40:28] iamlindoro: Could add a buttonitem that has text like, "Retrieve more themes from the internet..."
[01:40:39] sphery: ooh, I like that idea
[01:40:48] iamlindoro: That is, in the main buttonlist, not the context menu

[01:41:16] iamlindoro: just throwing out ideas, anyway
[01:41:28] wagnerrp: add it as the top or bottom 'theme'
[01:42:10] sphery: I'm running current development code with the theme, "Retrieve more themes from the internet...", but it looks just like Terra. What's different about it?

[02:49:58] wagnerrp: go for it
[02:51:07] pronewbie: :), Im building a box for my folks instead of them buying a pvr, the model they were looking at was able to record/watch a combination of 3 channels in HD
[02:51:34] [R]: pronewbie: 3 channels of what
[02:51:35] pronewbie: with all the benefits of using something like mythtv, i would also like to be able to serve a slave also
[02:51:51] pronewbie: 3 TV inputs in HD
[02:51:59] [R]: and the "inputs" are...
[02:52:14] pronewbie: free to air tv boardcasts
[02:52:19] pronewbie: digital tv
[02:53:27] pronewbie: is that what you are referring to ?
[02:53:34] [R]: yes
[02:53:36] [R]: and the question is...
[02:54:39] wagnerrp: for example... give some hardware youre considering, and we will give suggestions from there
[02:58:33] pronewbie: i have read some of the faq on the site, it appears that low hardware is ok when using a tv tuner with its own processor, my thoughts were something like a, AMD 955 (Quad core 3.2g), 4–6 gig dual/trip chan ram, decent mobo, raid 5 upto their recording needs
[02:58:56] pronewbie: if i can get away with alot less, then it leaves more $$$ for better case and remotes etc
[02:59:12] wagnerrp: AMDs dont have triple channel memory
[02:59:20] wagnerrp: only the i7–9xx series
[02:59:34] pronewbie: ah, my bad !
[02:59:43] wagnerrp: a quad 3.2 will be plenty powerful for any of mythtv's needs
[02:59:51] wagnerrp: for recording, you dont want to use RAID
[03:00:06] wagnerrp: use independent disks, and let the storage scheduler distribute the load as it sees fit
[03:00:14] wagnerrp: you can move content to a redundant archive if you like
[03:00:21] aputerboy (aputerboy!~chatzilla@pool-96-233-32-137.bstnma.fios.verizon.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[03:00:45] aputerboy: How can I find the recording resolution from the recorded table? If it's not there, what is the best way to find out if it was recorded in HD, SD and the resolution
[03:01:09] pronewbie: are there issues when using a raid? i would have thought it would have been no slower then a single disk
[03:01:32] wagnerrp: pronewbie: the problem is the sync loop
[03:02:06] wagnerrp: mythbackend runs a very short fsync loop for file writes, to make sure it doesnt build up a large write buffer that can cause the system to stall
[03:02:28] wagnerrp: if youre recording multiple files to a single file system
[03:02:39] wagnerrp: that will cause excessive seeking, and significantly reduced performance
[03:02:58] pronewbie: ah thats good to know, thanks
[03:03:03] wagnerrp: now any raid array, or even any single drive should still have plenty of power for all the data you can pull from three tuner cards
[03:03:15] wagnerrp: but its still better to just give it independent disks and let it do as it pleases
[03:03:44] pronewbie: will do, also makes it a little easier to increase storage not using a raid in future
[03:04:08] wagnerrp: right, with storage groups, you just add another folder to the list, and youre done
[03:04:21] wagnerrp: no array or partition expansion necessary
[03:04:35] wagnerrp: aputerboy: best option is to use some external tool like ffmpeg
[03:04:44] wagnerrp: if i may ask, what are you trying to do?
[03:05:46] pronewbie: from what i have read, intel i3/i5 X2 are pretty good when compared to an amd X4 esp in regards to video encoding etc, i guess this is more of an opinionated question for you, what would you go for ?

[03:06:03] [R]: pronewbie: if you are recording digital ota, you're not encoding
[03:06:21] wagnerrp: digital tuners record pre-encoded video from the broadcaster
[03:06:40] aputerboy: I wrote a perl-sql script to print out the key attributes of my recordings so I can better search for things (which is helpful when shows are not properly labeled and I want to eliminate duplicates). This for me is much much faster than paging through the mythtv gui or searching through a mythweb page. Plus I can throw it into emacs or whatever and do all types of cool stuff
[03:06:47] pronewbie: sorry for being so noob! I really appreciate you guys clearing up my queries
[03:07:00] aputerboy: One of the attributes I want is to know the resolution so I can see which versions to keep
[03:08:48] Beirdo: why did you use SQL when we already have that info available via the perl bindings?
[03:09:55] pronewbie: another q about recording sound; does each tv tuner handle this itself? or will i need additional sound cards for each tuner to record the sound?
[03:09:56] aputerboy: I also use this script together with another one I wrote that allows me to automatically copy over "description" "title" "subtitle" from other entries in either the recorded, record, oldrecorded, recordedprogram table (or to enter my own text) – this is very helpful since Data Direct seems to often have the wrong description or missing subtitles in the show actually recorded though it may...
[03:09:58] aputerboy: ...be right somewhere else in the database. This routine automatically yanks out all similar candidates and allows you to pick which one to use as the source
[03:10:33] wagnerrp: pronewbie: digital tuners record pre-encoded video from the broadcaster
[03:10:42] wagnerrp: audio and sound, in a nice mpeg2 container
[03:10:47] wagnerrp: just copied straight to disk
[03:11:16] Beirdo: at most, filtered to remove other MPEG2 streams on the way to disk
[03:11:29] aputerboy: in any case, the more sql I play with, the more I realize that I can do better with CLI perl routines & sql queries than by waiting for a relatively slow and limited GUI to load and page through
[03:11:51] Beirdo: aputerboy: perl bindings.
[03:12:04] Beirdo: nutron: ^^^

[03:30:49] pronewbie: that due to amd bad linux support?

[03:32:25] wagnerrp: intel has had decent drivers, just pathetic hardware... although the onboard video on the new i3/i5s is decent, it still doesnt have supported decode acceleration

[03:40:34] wagnerrp: anyway, if there was anything, it would be in recordedmarkup
[03:40:43] aputerboy: is it in MythTv.pm?
[03:40:54] aputerboy: or do you mean source code for MythTV itself
[03:41:09] wagnerrp: kormoc: or are you talking about the calls that run
[03:41:19] wagnerrp: 'ffmpeg -i' to pull media info
[03:41:31] aputerboy: any reason that the tags wagnerr mentions are not in the 'recorded' table – it seems like it would be a nice tag to have
[03:42:00] aputerboy: somehow mythweb seems to show the SD/HD etc/ — so maybe there is code there
[03:42:26] wagnerrp: aputerboy: those are probably codes from the guide data provider, found in recordedprogram
[03:44:07] kormoc: wagnerrp, we have real resolutions
[03:45:13] kormoc: aputerboy, wagnerrp, https://github.com/MythTV/mythtv/blob/master/ . . . fo.cpp#L3314
[03:45:38] kormoc: aputerboy, because resolutions can change mid-stream
[03:45:41] aputerboy: wagner: thanks I will look at that table – so to clarify – are the tables 'recorded' 'program' and 'recordedprogram' all linked by the combined key 'chanid' and 'starttime'
[03:45:49] kormoc: aputerboy, so a video might start off at 720 and go to 1080
[03:46:13] kormoc: that query that I linked pulls out the resolution of the video based on duration
[03:46:18] aputerboy: kormoc – ahhh i didn't know that... does it happen in reality?
[03:46:21] pyther (pyther!~pyther@unaffiliated/pyther) has left #mythtv-users ()

[03:47:23] aputerboy: kormoc – of course u are right – i forgot about commercials
[03:47:33] kormoc: pretty much all of myth is chanid + starttime

[03:50:02] kormoc: wagnerrp, so aye, you're right, we have tags, not pure values, but it's close enough for most folks
[03:50:24] iamlindoro: We do have pure values

[03:50:42] aputerboy: kormoc: what happens to those values if i transcode the stream? — i.e., do the MARK_VIDEO.. refer to the original resolution or to the actual resolution of the video file that is transcoded
[03:50:43] iamlindoro: recordedmarkup gets the literal width and height
[03:50:47] kormoc: my mistake!
[03:51:16] iamlindoro: every time a change is registered, it's marked by framenum and width, and framenum and height
[03:51:18] kormoc: aputerboy, if you transcode and reprocess the new video (re-generate seek info) it'll be the new values AFAIK
[03:52:48] aputerboy: thanks – sounds though that for my "informal" purposes of just seeing which streams are nominally HD vs SD etc., that maybe the tag hdtv in the recordedprogram table is easiest and good enough
[03:53:26] iamlindoro: that tag is based on your listings, not the recording
[03:53:38] iamlindoro: if your listings are accurate, it'll be fine
[03:53:44] iamlindoro: if they're not, it won't
[03:53:56] aputerboy: iamlindoro – true (and my listings aren't always accurate) but may be better than nothing

[05:39:24] momelod: and in myth when i set the audio to 5.1 i loose all sound
[05:39:26] jya: momelod: iec958 is a 2 channels
[05:39:50] jya: you can never do 6 channels audio on it, unless you use AC3 or DTS
[05:40:05] momelod: spdif is 5.1 no?
[05:40:22] jya: spdif lets you output 5.1 audio
[05:40:29] jya: but it's a stereo medium
[05:40:44] jya: 5.1 AC3 is encoded over a stereo PCM stream
[05:41:07] jya: in short, with iec958, speaker-test will only ever work with -c 2
[05:41:55] momelod: i have an ac3 receiver and in the audio options i have enabled dolby digital
[05:42:29] jya: when you say you loose all sound
[05:42:42] jya: what precisely are your audio settings..

[06:24:29] jya: you'll only see 5.1 if you play a file with an AC3 or DTS track

[06:25:23] jya: if you press menu -> audio

[06:28:23] jya: [R] quality wise, it's similar to DTS-ES

[06:29:11] momelod: http://pastebin.com/2p1aCurJ
[06:29:27] jya: [R] the upmixer in myth is sligthly better than doly prologic
[06:29:41] jya: dolby prologic uses a simple matrix decoding
[06:29:43] [R]: is the differnece between best and good just cpu usage?
[06:29:51] jya: and quality too
[06:29:57] [R]: well obviously, but i mean impact to the system
[06:30:06] jya: but imho, good is what everyone should be using
[06:30:12] [R]: really?
[06:30:20] [R]: isn't best better than good?
[06:30:25] jya: it has a slightly higher CPU overhead
[06:30:34] jya: but it's not that much in the grand scheme of things
[06:30:44] jya: far less than say resampling with the "best" setting
[06:30:49] jya: that one is nasty...
[06:30:51] ** [R] attempts to find stereo content to test **

[06:31:47] jya: see which one has better channel separation
[06:31:50] jya: yes
[06:34:07] [R]: my receiver isn't registering it as 5.1
[06:34:54] momelod: jya, also, under this setup, even the 2ch audio isnt coming out of my speakers..
[06:35:26] momelod: i have to actually change it back to stereo on the audio config to get working.
[06:35:44] jya: momelod: I think I know why...
[06:35:56] jya: somehow, your audio device is a USB one
[06:36:16] jya: are you compiling your own mythtv or you're using packages?
[06:36:55] momelod: im using mythbuntu packages for 0.24
[06:37:11] jya: the autobuild ?
[06:37:26] momelod: yes
[06:37:31] jya: upgrade your mythtv
[06:37:41] jya: to something more recent than 27419

[06:38:18] MythLogBot: SVN 27419: (branch fixes/0.24) https://github.com/MythTV/mythtv/commit/316f85f7
[06:38:20] jya: but if it is what I think it is
[06:38:49] jya: and the issue is related to your audio device, and buggy alsa driver
[06:39:08] jya: if your audio card is a USB one as earlier log showed
[06:39:37] momelod: so what's up with the usb? is it limited to 2ch for some reason?
[06:39:51] jya: mythtv use mmap to write audio, this isn't available for anything but PCI device
[06:40:06] jya: normally, ALSA would report that mmap isn't available for the device
[06:40:15] RyeBrye (RyeBrye!~ryebrye@67.199.189.49) has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[06:40:23] jya: in which case myth reverts to non-mmap access mode

[06:40:40] RyeBrye (RyeBrye!~ryebrye@67.199.189.49) has joined #mythtv-users
[06:40:43] jya: so you get no audio as mmap can't work with usb device
[06:41:38] jya: if you're willing to compile mythtv yourself (it isn't hard)
[06:41:44] jya: you can try a patch
[06:41:57] momelod: sure, i've compiled it before
[06:41:59] jya: funny, I had just removed all mmap calls yesterday
[06:42:26] momelod: is there a way to force it to non-mmap?
[06:42:30] jya: nope
[06:42:36] jya: it relies on alsa to say so
[06:43:03] wagnerrp: you could fix the driver so that it properly follows the API
[06:43:55] momelod: jya, where can i download the patch?
[06:43:59] jya: I can't think of any applications other than mythtv using mmap though
[06:44:16] jya: you can't download it from anywhere yet..
[06:44:19] jya: I have to make it
[06:44:37] jya: and right now, my myth doesn't compile so I can't test it

[17:12:55] iamlindoro: RDV_Linux: basically, you have one clone of the repository, and can switch between branches at will from the same checkout
[17:14:17] iamlindoro: RDV_Linux: You start with a "git clone git://github.com/MythTV/mythtv.git" which gets you what was essentially trunk (now called master)... when you want to switch to .24, for example, you would enter your mythtv dir and issue "git checkout fixes/0.24"
[17:14:36] iamlindoro: to switch that tree back to "trunk" you would issue a "git checkout master"

[19:41:37] momelod: yes
[19:41:54] jya: well, it could well be your audio card!
[19:41:57] momelod: and i confirmed that my receiver doesn't decode dts
[19:42:05] momelod: so that makes me the second person u know :)
[19:42:09] jya: looks like it doesn't do AC3 either
[19:42:22] momelod: lol, according to the manual it does..
[19:42:38] jya: the only reason that DTS box is still in there, is because one of the mythtv dev have such amp
[19:42:52] jya: would have been removed a long time ago otherwise
[19:45:25] momelod: sucks that my tv reduces the hdmi in to 2ch. is that normal?
[19:46:20] jya: yes
[19:46:29] jya: mine does that too
[19:46:39] jya: if you get a new fancy amp with DTS-HD MA etc..
[19:46:45] jya: get a GT430 video card
[19:47:00] jya: that card supports passthrough of those
[19:47:03] jya: over hdmi
[19:47:42] momelod: not an option for me, im using a diskless thinkclient for the frontend.. no place to add any cards
[19:47:58] jya: well, get an ion2 box then
[19:48:04] jya: it also support it
[19:50:18] momelod: this is an ion2

[20:20:41] momelod: not sure why its on the usb bus tho..
[20:22:32] k_ross: jya: please don't remove the DTS checkbox, i need it (even though i'm using a new Onkyo receiver with DTS-HD MA etc. support). i get crackly audio when i have it enabled. i leave it unchecked and let myth re-encode to ac3.

[20:27:35] jya: we have support now to re-encode to AAC and use AAC passthrough for those with an amp supporting aac passthrough
[20:29:10] k_ross: it might be a buffering issue. the same file plays fine with mplayer. this has been mentioned on the users mailing list a couple times (someone else has the same problem), but no one showed much interest, so as long as i have the reencode-to-ac3 workaround, i'm relatively happy
[20:34:47] jya: may be worth trying a recent copy

[21:03:47] sphery: aputerboy: no, other changes required
[21:04:32] sphery: that's why we have a) GUI support for deleting in mythfrontend and MythWeb, b) API support through the protocol, c) bindings support from (mainly) Python bindings
[21:04:33] aputerboy: sphery: and can you tell me or point me to what those other changes might be? thanks

[21:06:59] aputerboy: sphery – thanks – well i am trying to come up with a quick perl script that would allow me to delete one or more recordings based upon various search terms. I tried looking at the perl-MythTV library but I didn't see any documentation and IMO seemed more complicated (and hence more dangerous) than just writing a few simple perl DBI sql queries. But I'm happy to do it "right" if someone can...
[21:07:01] aputerboy: ...point me to good documentation to make sure I am understanding and using the perl bindings correctly
[21:07:34] sphery: yeah, unfortunately the perl bindings are really not perl bindings
[21:07:39] sphery: more just a wrapper around the protocol
[21:08:27] aputerboy: well my problem with mythweb and/or the GUI is that they are very slow (since my machines are slow) and also limited in what I can do
[21:08:31] sphery: so you need to learn DELETE_RECORDING and maybe FORCE_DELETE_RECORDING, then use backend_command to send the appropriate commands
[21:08:33] aputerboy: and I don't know python or xml
[21:08:35] sphery: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Category:Myth_Protocol
[21:08:57] sphery: I'd actually suggest that figuring out the MythTV Python bindings would be easier, though
[21:09:29] sphery: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/0.24_Python_Bindings + all the examples at http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Category:Python_Scripts
[21:09:31] aputerboy: sphery: I noticed those comands in perl-MythTV but is there anywhere a documented list of commands and parameters for backend_command
[21:09:47] sphery: and the fact that there's a dev who's /very/ good at helping people use the python bindings who hangs out in here :)
[21:09:59] sphery: aputerboy: it's protocol... http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Category:Myth_Protocol
[21:10:09] sphery: and that changes with various releases, too
[21:10:16] sphery: which is why I'd recommend just using python
[21:10:29] sphery: the python bindings will be updated with changes to the protocol
[21:10:39] aputerboy: sphery – ahhh – so even if I use perl-MythTV I am not protected and abstracted against protocol changes?
[21:10:45] sphery: any perl code you write that uses the protocol will have to updated when/if that part of the protocol changes
[21:10:48] sphery: right
[21:11:13] sphery: the perl bindings were a very simple foundation that was supposed to grow into full-fledged bindings like the Python ones
[21:11:29] aputerboy: is anybody working on perl-bindings or is it a dead-end?
[21:11:34] sphery: unfortunately, that didn't happen--but wagnerrp stepped up and did that for the python bindings
[21:11:48] sphery: it's um, indeterminate now :)
[21:12:45] sphery: to give you an idea... take a look at http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Delete_recordings.py
[21:12:58] sphery: that would be a very good start (or solution) to your problem
[21:13:23] sphery: aputerboy: in case you missed that, see http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Delete_recordings.py
[21:13:50] aputerboy: sphery: ahhhh thanks – i don't love the idea of learning a new languge – i have enough trouble remembering and not getting confused by the few I already know...
[21:14:01] sphery: heh, yeah
[21:14:26] sphery: but with the headstart you get from the python bindings and wagnerrp's existing scripts, you likely don't have to learn python--just hack it
[21:14:28] sphery: :)
[21:14:29] aputerboy: heck even keeping C, bash, and perl in my head gets me confused
[21:14:43] sphery: yeah, I agree
[21:17:34] aputerboy: sphery – thanks for the pointers – sounds like I have 2 potential solutions either adapt the python code you pointed to or use backend_command from perl-MythTV (with the caveat that I need to watch for protocol changes)
[21:17:44] sphery: yeah
[21:18:13] sphery: but it really looks like that existing python script is 90%+ of what you want
[21:18:22] sphery: and with a few minor changes could be exactly what you want
[21:18:58] aputerboy: sphery – ur probably right but it's the 80:20 rule kind of thing where learning the python to get the last 10% may be a bear :)
[21:23:22] aputerboy: Just out of curiosity has anyone considered porting mythtv to the arm processor for use either with the general PlugComputer devices (there is a nice new one that has an HDMI output) or with something like the Chumby Infocast?
[21:25:45] weta (weta!~aross@CPE485b390978ce-CM00222ddf42dd.cpe.net.cable.rogers.com) has joined #mythtv-users
[21:25:45] aputerboy: the GuruPlug with the HDMI output would make a cool tiny (plug sized), low power (5–10W) frontend machine that could just be plugged into an outlet and have a 720p HDMI output for about $100
[21:26:10] aputerboy: And you could put the whole OS and mythtv package on a micro SD allowing easy configuration
[21:26:42] sphery: the biggest problem with doing so is video decoding
[21:26:54] sphery: which is not typically possible through software using those chips
[21:27:22] sphery: and the hardware decoders they contain aren't supported in GNU/Linux, so not really usable
[21:27:39] aputerboy: true but I think the GuruPlug with the built-in HDMI output has hardware decoding – indeed it needs that to give 720p with a 1.2 GHz CPU
[21:27:42] skd5aner: http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=469716398919 &n dash; very interesting how China and Russia are basically blank. China I can sort of understand, but Russia? Facebook can't penetrate the iron curtain?
[21:27:44] aputerboy: ahhhh
[21:27:55] aputerboy: so it's a proprietary thing.
[21:28:02] sphery: I think there was some work on beagle board, but I got the impression those who tried found it wasn't worth it because you lose too much
[21:28:05] sphery: yeah
[21:28:36] iamlindoro: skd5aner: That's okay, Alaska basically blank too ;)
[21:28:39] sphery: those who tried mythfrontend on beagle board, that is--some people are still hacking on beagle board, just not a lot of mythtv interest, now

[21:28:54] aputerboy: well i have a good friend who works at Marvel and is a sales engineer for Marvel – so if people are interested, I could ask him about getting access though I know that Marvel can be a pita with NDA's
[21:29:32] aputerboy: he actually is in charge of the plugcomputer usage (which is how I ended up getting about 1/2 dozen free plugs :)
[21:30:08] sphery: it's most likely to be supported if it gets support through one of the main APIs--i.e. VDPAU or VA-API
[21:30:29] sphery: though VA-API seems to have some serious problems at this point, so not necessarily usable with MythTV
[21:31:04] aputerboy: I will follow up with him to see if it's possible – I do think it would be quite an awesome hack if it is...
[21:31:17] sphery: many would be interested
[21:31:47] sphery: I'm more a fan of having a real general-purpose CPU with headroom for when I want/need it that also idles at very low power
[21:31:50] aputerboy: sphery: thanks again for all the help today!
[21:32:53] sphery: and when you can get a Mac Mini that idles at 10W and has sufficient power to do software decoding of high-bitrate, high-resolution video and has an nvidia GPU with VDPAU support (so it generally still idles when playing back said HDTV video)...
[21:33:27] sphery: going down from 10W to 5–10W but losing the ability to compute seems a bad trade to me :)
[21:34:55] sphery: that said, a lot of people choose such tradeoffs
[21:35:11] sphery: (but probably mainly so they can buy cheap instead of getting a Mac Mini)

[21:51:37] wagnerrp: all objects accessing the database check the primary schema by default
[21:52:12] wagnerrp: the added check there is just an override to force it to check something else upon initialization
[21:53:01] wagnerrp: aputerboy: the perl bindings basically grew out as an extension of nuvexport

[21:55:38] wagnerrp: its decent, very low power, fairly cheap, very small... but not a great frontend
[21:55:45] wagnerrp: and mythtv itself has no such support for it
