[01:22:54] high-rez: This may be a very old argument, and since i'm always like 6 years behind I'll have to ask it anyways. Dolby Digital or DTS?  :)
[01:23:25] wagnerrp: DTS is higher bitrate, and so generally higher quality
[01:23:33] wagnerrp: but its really up to who mastered it
[01:23:48] wagnerrp: sometimes the DD track is better, sometimes the DTS track is better
[01:24:40] high-rez: Hmmf. I noticed some of my movies don't advertise DTS with the DTS logo even though they have it.
[01:25:37] high-rez: I've got killbill being pulled pulling off the dvd right now so I can have a listen (as an iso so I can switch between).
[01:26:23] high-rez: I've never had a receiver that could do DTS – let alone a quality enough audio setup so I didn't care – but now I'm curious to play with it :)
[01:28:28] high-rez: I have to say, DVD looks pretty darned good still... I have a hard time justifying the Bluray at its current price points.
[01:31:21] Brad-D: hey wagnerrp, how do you hook up the audio on your mythtv? I've always done it with a stereo cable, which is kind of ghetto. Not taking advantage of my surround sound :>

[01:32:36] high-rez: Brad-D: I know your question isn't to me but I'll chime in anyways. I've got HDMI out (i have an nvidia 210 with real hdmi) out to my receiver. One cable out of myth and done.  :D
[01:33:34] wagnerrp: stereo cable on one, hdmi on the other

[01:36:07] Brad-D: wow i didn't realize that hdmi did audio as well
[01:36:11] Brad-D: i will have to play around with that
[01:36:20] Brad-D: last time i played with hdmi, it was giving me video headaches
[01:36:21] high-rez: Hmmf, I think this disk has intentional bad blocks to prevent ripping :(
[01:36:28] Brad-D: is there any other way to hook it up for 5.1 sound?
[01:36:46] high-rez: I've never had a problem with video over hdmi – though audio isn't quite as straight forward
[01:37:00] high-rez: Its possible to hook it up for 7.1 even (LPCM)
[01:37:16] Brad-D: for the audio, are you using alsa high-rez?
[01:37:34] wagnerrp: if you actually have HDMI audio, and not just SPDIF over HDMI
[01:37:36] high-rez: From what i've been told/read ALSA doesn't quite support passing TrueHD DTS-HD through yet
[01:38:07] high-rez: what wagner said, e.g. geforce 2xx card
[01:38:34] wagnerrp: of 8/9 series onboard
[01:38:38] wagnerrp: s/of/or/
[01:38:41] high-rez: i made the mistake of buying a 9600 (?) which had a pass through cable. returned it for the 210 – and i'm totally happy with it.
[01:38:52] Brad-D: i think i have an onboard 9600
[01:38:54] high-rez: wagnerrp: Is that right? E.g. the IONs should work then ?
[01:39:28] Brad-D: high-rez: what did you notice improvement wise on your new card, i was pondering getting a 2xx card, so i could play with more strenuous deinterlacers
[01:39:38] high-rez: There also appears to be a bug where if you're using onboard nvidia audio and an external card that enumeration fails – and not all is right.
[01:39:51] wagnerrp: yes, IONs should have full HDMI audio
[01:40:17] high-rez: Well the 210 can't do deinterlacing as well as my 8600GT could. But it had down high quality scaling – which from a very subjective analysis looks great.
[01:40:50] high-rez: I think the other 2XX (e.g. non 210) are prohibitively expensive for use in dedicated video machines at this point.
[01:41:24] Brad-D: hmmm, i wonder if i would get much of an upgrade visually going to a 220 from a 9600? i thought it might be a cheap $60 upgrade to play with
[01:41:26] high-rez: My receiver also does some magic to the video
[01:42:18] high-rez: I paid $50 for my 210 – i haven't seen any 220's for 60 bucks – but i guess i havent looked
[01:43:15] Brad-D: 60-ish
[01:44:36] Brad-D: well i guess it's time to attack hdmi with renewed vigour, and get my 5.1 sound up and going

[11:34:01] oobe: also check cat /var/log/messages | grep ATA
[11:34:46] oobe: and cat /var/log/messages | grep ATAPI
[11:35:00] bugger: yep ok for some reason now after the chmod i can play them in mplayer but in mythfrontend i get lock ups
[11:35:13] bugger: just sits with blank screen
[11:35:23] oobe: check the frontend logs
[11:35:23] bugger: i'll check those logs
[11:35:31] bugger: yup

[12:39:52] oobe: orly_owl, http://www.laikeet.com/catalog/images/CBA0_03.jpg somthing like that or variations of would work with a crt tv if it has composite
[12:40:42] orly_owl: the video card needs to support that though
[12:41:04] oobe: what card is it
[12:41:24] orly_owl: radeon 7500
[12:42:05] oobe: oh is this that mobo you bought a while ago
[12:42:31] oobe: did you fix the cpu problem
[12:42:38] orly_owl: uh no
[12:42:45] orly_owl: this radeon 7500 is in a p3
[12:42:51] orly_owl: i didnt fix the cpu :/
[12:43:04] orly_owl: no one will lend me a cpu to upgrade the BIOS with
[12:43:33] oobe: hmm
[12:43:48] oobe: is this going to be a backend fe on the p3
[12:43:57] oobe: it wont be very good
[12:44:18] orly_owl: a p3 fe

[12:45:33] orly_owl: maybe the coreboot pc
[12:45:44] orly_owl: although rather make it my desktop
[12:45:50] orly_owl: maybe it can be both!
[12:45:55] oobe: i replaced my p4 fe it was fast enough for video playback but it was a bit frustrating to scroll through menus with the new ui themes
[12:46:11] oobe: yea it can be both
[12:46:14] orly_owl: what did you replace it with
[12:46:15] justinh (justinh!~justin@cpc1-salf4-0-0-cust69.manc.cable.ntl.com) has joined #mythtv-users
[12:46:25] oobe: since you run linux anyway
[12:46:34] orly_owl: yeah trisquel
[12:46:40] orly_owl: which will be tricky
[12:46:49] oobe: most ppl who have backends that sole purpose is mythtv dont use linux as there main OS
[12:46:59] orly_owl: ah
[12:46:59] oobe: well thats an assumption
[12:47:07] oobe: but i do
[12:47:22] orly_owl: this way i could have a small box under the tv
[12:47:25] justinh: bad assumption IMHO
[12:47:26] oobe: and the backend just plods along with no real interference
[12:47:41] gbee: v. bad assumption
[12:48:06] oobe: i cant imagine having a dedicated backend
[12:48:06] justinh: most people who don't want the expense or complexity of trying to build a small quiet capacious combined system for under the TV have backends solely assigned to mythtv
[12:48:12] oobe: i never had one
[12:48:26] justinh: right, so peg everybody else under the same banner then :)
[12:48:40] oobe: i still have a remote frontend
[12:48:43] justinh: most people running a mythtv backend *are* running linux :P

[12:48:54] orly_owl: id also like irblaster to control the tv
[12:48:58] oobe: all i mean is i dont use my backend pc strictly for mythtv
[12:49:10] oobe: its a desktop it does all the normal things to
[12:49:22] justinh: well so? most mortals don't have mail servers at home either :)
[12:49:23] oobe: its not sitting in a cuboard waiting to record
[12:49:32] justinh: this is all incidental
[12:50:41] oobe: anyway the point is orly_owl you can use your existing linux install to run the backend
[12:50:58] orly_owl: yeah i got that :)
[12:51:04] orly_owl: before the fight started
[12:51:06] oobe: as long as it has a tuner and other requirements etc.
[12:51:21] justinh: and hoping to be able to use a ps3 as a frontend is.. er.. well a hope. good luck with that
[12:52:04] justinh: whoah. where the heck did I get that from? lol
[12:52:10] ** justinh winds his neck in **
[12:53:52] orly_owl: there should be a decent looking miniatx case for fe
[12:54:18] justinh: well yeah there should be, but there aren't that many
[12:54:27] orly_owl: :/
[12:54:35] orly_owl: i could do atx then
[12:54:44] orly_owl: not too massive though
[12:54:48] justinh: if any. I mean they all seem to have something wrong with them. front mounted ports with no cover to hide them...
[12:55:14] orly_owl: oh thats not too bad
[12:55:23] justinh: my LC02 case was about the best I could afford 5 years ago or so, but it's still just a box
[12:55:31] orly_owl: also, is irblaster for the tv possible?
[12:55:47] gbee: wonder if I can class these Bluray as development related and file an expense claim with MythTV Org :p
[12:55:50] justinh: sure but it's much easier to use a universal remote
[12:56:37] oobe: i spent ages looking at cases and writing up a list of parts
[12:57:05] oobe: i ended up buying a tiny acer revo atom ion thing instead
[12:57:19] oobe: tiny and silent much smaller than anything i could of built
[12:57:43] oobe: might of turned out a bit cheaper too
[12:57:58] justinh: my next frontend is mostly going to be... the backend machine.. hidden in the cupboard under the stairs
[12:58:31] gbee: I still consider my be/fe case as one of the best purchases I've ever made, yes it has front ports which aren't hidden away but at least there is a logical reason for them to be at the front, unlike most HTPC cases which have at least one thing at the front which makes no sense and which cost 4x as much
[12:58:42] JJ1 (JJ1!~jjensen@jeffjensen.dsl.visi.com) has joined #mythtv-users
[12:59:37] justinh: audio ports have no place on the front of a HTPC case IMHO
