[00:28:23] mtrelins: hi guys
[00:28:28] mtrelins: got a question
[00:30:24] [R]: 42
[00:30:39] Beirdo: well, we aren't mind readers... spit it out :)
[00:30:53] mtrelins: it's about jamu
[00:31:01] mtrelins: i originally was using sg
[00:31:04] mtrelins: ran jamu
[00:31:07] mtrelins: it filled in everything
[00:31:11] mtrelins: now i'm not using storage groups
[00:31:17] mtrelins: but the artwork isn't showing up
[00:31:22] mtrelins: and when i rerun jamu
[00:31:27] mtrelins: it says there's nothing to update
[00:31:28] Beirdo: http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-ReadyNAS-4-Bay- . . . p/B000VA3TXY
[00:31:34] Beirdo: Hmmm, that could be cool
[00:31:52] Beirdo: so you broke your system... nice
[00:32:38] wagnerrp: mtrelins: its likely not doing anything because you already have artwork defined
[00:32:53] wagnerrp: but its artwork mapped to a file in the storage group, rather than the absolute path
[00:32:56] RDV_Linux: mtrelins: Have you removed all the old storage groups and replaced them with front end settings on the backend you run Jamu? Also after getting rid of the storage groups did you rescan in MythVideo?
[00:33:00] Beirdo: I dunno what to suggest other than next time don't fix what ain't broke :)
[00:33:25] aroazen (aroazen!~andrewroa@70-59-232-134.phnx.qwest.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:33:42] mtrelins: beirdo: sg were broke ;)
[00:33:54] Beirdo: doubtful
[00:33:54] mtrelins: kept getting cut off while watching movies
[00:33:57] aroazen: hello
[00:34:03] Beirdo: did you put in a bug?
[00:34:13] mtrelins: no, because i don't know what caused it
[00:34:15] mtrelins: other than "sg"
[00:34:20] RDV_Linux: mtrelins: wagnerrp's comments are likely correct as to Jamu everything looks in order so nothing to update.
[00:34:28] Beirdo: heh
[00:34:35] mtrelins: turned it off, rescanned, watching successfully for 7–8 movies
[00:34:44] ** Beirdo walks away before breaking something **
[00:35:15] aroazen: 10.04 is going to crush my dreams, isn't it
[00:35:24] RDV_Linux: mtrelins: turned what off? Answer the first set of questions I asked you.
[00:35:25] wagnerrp: how so?
[00:35:31] wagnerrp: aroazen: ^^^
[00:35:54] mtrelins: i disabled storage groups
[00:36:00] mtrelins: and did samba mounts
[00:36:08] mtrelins: now i can view the videos just fine
[00:36:16] wagnerrp: why not NFS?
[00:36:19] mtrelins: i deleted my art
[00:36:57] RDV_Linux: mtrelins: I assume that means you removed storage groups for video, coverart, fanart, banners and screenshots.
[00:37:27] aroazen: if I've got a wifi box, do I install the backend during the regular install or afterward? the router recognizes the wifi's MAC address and fixes it at 192.168.2.5, but the liveCD doesn't
[00:37:55] wagnerrp: aroazen: hopefully youre only going to be running mythtv on a single machine?
[00:38:02] aroazen: yes
[00:38:10] RDV_Linux: mtrelins: On the backend you run Jamu you must run the MythTV front end and set up video, coverart, fanart and banners paths.
[00:38:11] aroazen: this is not my first mythbox btw
[00:38:19] aroazen: dual PVR-150s
[00:38:30] wagnerrp: questions about mythbuntu installs should be asked in #mythbuntu
[00:38:33] aroazen: aha
[00:38:34] mtrelins: i have done that
[00:38:35] aroazen: thanks

[01:05:53] Beirdo: doesn't matter anyways. samba's an application
[01:06:02] Beirdo: NFS is kernel-space + application
[01:06:22] mtrelins: well, so far this "aint" broke

[01:15:35] wagnerrp: so its the first thing i mentioned
[01:15:53] wagnerrp: you still had artwork entries in the database, but they were bad since they were mapped to storage group files rather than absolute fiels
[01:15:53] RDV_Linux: mtrelins: Well that looks better. You should not have needed to delete the previous artwork, but I am glad that it is now working.
[01:16:07] mtrelins: ok don't thrash me for this....
[01:16:24] mtrelins: but i don't think SG work for me because they are pointed to a raid volume which is external usb drives

[01:30:43] Beirdo: that's me kicking your peg-leg out from under ya, pirate!
[01:31:25] mtrelins: hypothetically speaking i can have a bluray rip if i own the bluray
[01:31:31] Beirdo: if you want to know if playback issues are caused by samba, play back from local disk
[01:31:38] Beirdo: mtrelins: no you can't, not in the USA
[01:31:45] mtrelins: oh seriously?
[01:31:47] wagnerrp: mtrelins: no, you can rip your own bluray disk if you have the blurary disk
[01:32:01] Beirdo: bypassing encryption... that's DMCA violation, no?
[01:32:04] mtrelins: can i rip a dvd if i own the dvd?
[01:32:49] Beirdo: technically, no
[01:32:56] wagnerrp: again, depends on your view of the DMCA
[01:33:06] mtrelins: laaame
[01:33:22] mtrelins: i thought u were allowed to back up what you owned
[01:33:34] wagnerrp: certainly, you just cant decrypt it
[01:33:39] Beirdo: wagnerrp: they've charged people for doing such things... and for writing de-css code
[01:33:48] mtrelins: most of what i use the living room frontend for is ripping so that i can watch on the nettop in the bedroom
[01:34:12] Beirdo: my view is that the DMCA is a crappy law, but it IS the law
[01:34:12] wagnerrp: Beirdo: for distributing decryption code, sure... no one has ever been charged for ripping their own content
[01:34:28] mtrelins: it's like a blue law
[01:34:38] mtrelins: i didn't write the code
[01:34:53] mtrelins: but like i said, i usually rip a dvd so i can watch in the bedroom
[01:35:06] mtrelins: no optical drive in the bedroom
[01:35:08] Beirdo: TMI
[01:35:36] Beirdo: anyways.. if you are wondering if the pixelation is due to samba... copy it locally, and use a local directory
[01:35:50] Beirdo: if it's still pixellated, it's not samba causing it
[01:36:19] wagnerrp: not that samba could do such a thing as cause pixellation in video
[01:36:20] mtrelins: i guess at that point i'd have to setup an alternate player for those, eh?
[01:37:00] wagnerrp: and for what its worth, mplayer and mythtv all use the same decoding libraries, scaling is done in the video card
[01:37:10] wagnerrp: there should be no difference in quality between mplayer and mythtv output
[01:37:25] mtrelins: hmm
[01:37:36] mtrelins: is there a way to increase the cache size for playback?
[01:37:41] mtrelins: of the internal player
[01:37:46] wagnerrp: no
[01:37:56] wagnerrp: you just need to ensure you have a sufficiently fast and reliable network
[01:38:07] mtrelins: 100mbit switched
[01:38:15] Beirdo: and that's how samba could cause
[01:38:20] wagnerrp: which means 100mbit switched is plenty fine for anything
[01:38:28] clever: ive increased the cache size before to make it work on a 802.11b wifi
[01:38:31] Beirdo: samba is slow
[01:38:34] clever: it didnt help because of a related bug
[01:38:54] mtrelins: clever: did you get a workaround?
[01:38:55] clever: the instant it blocks on network access, it completely ignores the cache and locks everything up:P
[01:39:03] Beirdo: anyways, mplayer and mythtv may use the same libs, but are we sure it's the same version of them?
[01:39:30] wagnerrp: certainly current mythtv is going to be using newer libraries than a several year old copy of mplater
[01:39:36] clever: i just stopped using that slow wifi card
[01:41:28] mtrelins: is the jamu.py ... -MV good for a cron command?
[01:41:44] mtrelins: for incremental changes
[01:42:35] RDV_Linux: mtrelins: Please read the jamu wiki http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Jamu
[01:43:04] mtrelins: they just use -M
[01:46:58] high-rez: If you tell myth you have a 7.1 setup – and it gets a 5.1 audio source does it attempt to do any up conversion or does it just output 6 channels of sound ?
[01:47:15] wagnerrp: are you running trunk?
[01:48:37] high-rez: wagner: I am running trunk.
[01:48:58] wagnerrp: then yes, it should handle upconversion and resampling as needed

[01:50:35] high-rez: So I should tell it I have 5.1 so it doesn't try to upsconvert 5.1 data to 7.1 – forcing my receiver to downconvert back to 5.1 ?

[01:57:04] gafir: hello, here is a quick question not directly related to mythtv but I thought you'd be best judge on this. I have recorded a video from my comcast dvr using firewire and test-mpeg2 — The first 55 seconds work, and then nothing can play beyond that (the part that was played a video recorded by the comcast dvr) — only VLC plays it properly, any other player or editor on Ubuntu just stops playing it — any idea what's happening here? T
[02:02:35] mtrelins: corrupt file?
[02:03:27] gafir: mtrelins:what i think it might be is that it's seen as a "stream" rather than a file with a beginning and an end

[02:03:55] gafir: but is there a way to put it back on track? make it clean and playable/convertable to other formats?

[06:01:21] simcop2387-lap: hahaha

[07:24:35] jya: I couldn't find any reference to what channel order ALSA use for those
[07:24:40] Beirdo: yeah, I could try setting up a spare set of speakers as side
[07:24:44] jya: so I made up something that seemed logical
[07:24:49] jya: but with alsa, you never know
[07:25:04] Beirdo: umm, speaker-test -Dsurround71 -c8
[07:25:09] Beirdo: it should tell ya
[07:25:10] jya: internally, myth now entirely works with WAV / SMPTE order
[07:25:30] jya: for analog output

[09:37:31] justinh: and even then you have to know how to interpret the numbers. mythtv assumes the driver reports signal level & quality a certain way – which isn't always the case

[09:39:55] eps_: me-tv also reports almost identical signal data
[09:40:09] justinh: femon is one of the dvb utils programs
[09:40:26] eps_: just found it via google, I shall try that
[09:41:04] justinh: I find that the signal level is actually the inverse of what you'd expect with my card's drivers
[09:41:09] eps_: I'm wondering what my best course of action would be. the single connection between the antenna and the pc (plug in the wall) is correctly seated and teh antenna is unmovable
[09:41:15] justinh: i.e. lower numbers == stronger signal
[09:41:19] eps_: haha oh I see
[09:41:31] justinh: some drivers differ
[09:41:44] justinh: the numbers you should *really* be looking at are BER and UNC
[09:41:55] justinh: Bit Error Rate and Uncorrectable errors
[09:42:11] justinh: oh and SNR. SNR should be as high as possible (up to FFFF)
[09:42:29] justinh: BER and UNC should both be as near to zero as possible.
[09:42:30] eps_: SNR sits between 99 and 100% for most channels
[09:42:44] eps_: I'll look at BER and UNC now, when I work out femon
[09:43:21] eps_: FE: Philips TDA10046H DVB-T (DVBT)
[09:43:21] eps_: status VY | signal 50% | snr 49% | ber 81338 | unc 0 |
[09:43:36] eps_: should I be running this while changing channels or?
[09:44:06] eps_: ah yes
[09:44:14] justinh: with digital TV the concept of channels is out of the window really
[09:44:25] justinh: ow. bad SNR, and very high BER
[09:44:30] justinh: your signal is mush
[09:44:42] eps_: status SCVYL | signal 53% | snr 99% | ber 8122 | unc 0 | FE_HAS_LOCK <--- this is on the channel I wish to watch
[09:44:50] justinh: ber is way too high
[09:45:08] justinh: you'll be seeing frequent blocking, jumps & all kinds of nasty stuff
[09:45:15] justinh: am I right?
[09:45:22] eps_: oh yes, especially while trying to watch the tour de france :P
[09:45:53] eps_: okay so a bad ber would suggest an issue with the co-ax cable I'm using or with the antenna? (or both?)
[09:45:58] justinh: so channels on other frequencies perform better?
[09:46:01] eps_: I'd guess a problem with the connections
[09:46:12] justinh: it can be interference, or all kinds of things
[09:46:34] justinh: oh FFS I've got to run environmental tests on a unit I tested 3 months ago because some **** lost the results
[09:46:41] eps_: status SCVYL | signal 61% | snr 100% | ber 466 | unc 0 | FE_HAS_LOCK <--- this is my highest signal channel
[09:46:53] justinh: that's still not very good
[09:46:57] eps_: much lower ber but fast action still ends with jaggies
[09:47:14] justinh: you need to deinterlace the video, then
[09:47:30] eps_: done, I will see if that improves it
[09:47:42] justinh: ARGHH. How can I run environmental tests when I don't have any thermocouples?!
[09:48:01] justinh: Oh well. it's gonna have to wait til I've ordered some more
[09:48:12] eps_: grab a candle :P
[09:48:56] eps_: okay so justinh I need to focus more on reducing the ber than on the signal strength? ... could that be caused by the offset of the antenna from the transmitter? (I can't imagine that would cause the issue)
[09:49:06] justinh: it's always the same. they decide the spec says the machine will run up to 50 degrees C, then we test it & find that the internal temperature exceeds the HDD's max temp rating
[09:49:21] justinh: and the video codec chip is hot enough to boil water on
[09:49:31] justinh: eps_: yes. signal quality is king
[09:49:57] justinh: eps_: experiment – and replacing the coax with better quality cable can't harm either
[09:50:02] eps_: justinh, you should live in australia. we find out specs are worthless every summer with temps up to 50*c
[09:50:13] justinh: overall foil screened cable
[09:50:28] justinh: not the crappy old UHF coax with like 50% screen coverage
[09:50:40] justinh: and foam insulator in the middle, not the crummy air spaced PVC junk
[09:50:46] map7_: Has anyone here got a HVR-2200 working correctly with SBS in Australia?
[09:50:49] eps_: the antenna appears to be a good quality one, it can't go any further towards the transmitter due to a chimney but that isn't blocking it, it should have LOS.
[09:50:59] eps_: I am using a 10m cheap coax cable from the wall to the pc though
[09:51:50] eps_: this cable has plasic (see through) around the copper and wire+foil around that but it is pretty thin compared to normal coax
[09:52:57] eps_: map7_, do your other channels work?
[09:53:10] map7_: yes all other channels work
[09:53:16] map7_: and I can get SBS to work sometimes
[09:53:34] map7_: once SBS is working if I change channel to channel 7 then back to SBS it stops working
[09:53:35] eps_: usually SBS are on another broadcasting tower (some times with ABC)
[09:53:52] map7_: it sits on 'LMs' so i suspect it's not getting signal
[09:54:14] eps_: LMs is a partial lock I think, me-tv usually picks those up (I'm watching sbs using me-tv now)
[09:54:23] map7_: but on my other mythtv box I can watch SBS fine and switch between channels

[11:20:44] eps_: map7_, great news :)
[11:20:49] map7_: is this anything to worry about?
[11:20:53] eps_: no
[11:21:04] eps_: your mythbackend is starting at the same time as mythfrontend
[11:21:19] eps_: you really want the backend up and running before the frontend
[11:21:37] eps_: on my myth computers one takes about 8 seconds and the other 5 seconds and ubuntu does all the staggering for me
[11:21:38] map7_: is there a way to set priority on startup scripts?
[11:22:06] eps_: there is but I couldn't work it out when I had a quick look. ubuntu moved to upstart which is confusing. on the old init.d system it's pretty straight forward
[11:22:51] map7_: yeah I haven't looked much at upstart myself.
[11:23:21] eps_: I reboot my myth computer roughly once every six months so I don't care enough to fix it
[11:24:49] map7_: yeah I suppose I shouldn't worry about this one
[11:25:32] map7_: I'm just building it for my boss and he might ask questions about the error, so I was trying to make it look clean

[12:13:03] justinh: you don't put the backend details in
[12:13:11] justinh: or rather, you shouldn't have to
[12:13:33] justinh: a frontend can locate a backend by looking at the database
[12:15:12] map7_: yes it automatically finds them then asks me the question 'save database details' or 'save backend details'
[12:17:47] map7_: so does 'save backend details' just save the name of my backend I like to connect to on the remote frontend?

[12:29:47] justinh: I dont remember ever having had to save backend details
[12:29:56] justinh: database details sure
[12:30:55] map7_: yeah I've only recently seen this when setting up the new mythtv remote frontends
[12:31:21] justinh: yet another triumph of the documentation :-\
[12:32:35] map7_: I suppose I'll just continue saving the database details.
[12:34:43] justinh: the only changeset I can find relating to it might be http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/changeset/15618
[12:34:51] justinh: which is about as clear as mud
[12:35:15] justinh: do whatever works for you :)

[12:43:11] map7_: that sounds bad.
[12:43:27] justinh: so upgraded my laptop's hdd & put the old laptop drive in the frontend :)
[12:43:33] justinh: now as good as diskless
[12:43:50] justinh: only without the stupid temperamental NIC
[12:44:03] justinh: mind, it seems to come up with network everytime now
[12:44:09] map7_: yeah I've had issues with bad NICs and thin clients
[12:44:30] justinh: I might use a uSB bootloader in future or summink

[12:44:57] justinh: about time motherboard flash was big enough to put the bloomin kernel on

[16:50:56] Standerd: it's not really a VLC question but #hardware appears locked, and I figured people here would know. I'm a novice who wants to encode a family VHS tape, eg to have it in an AVI or some other digital format. I have a VHS player with a Composite Video Out yellow slot, and a friend has a video card with a Composite Video In video slot. Is this enough to be able to convert the tape?
[16:52:21] wagnerrp: assuming you have drivers for it

[20:58:30] high-rez: So, i'm a bit confused agbout the whole digital out thing with also. Generally speaking, if you want to output to HDMI, should an HDMI device have on channel (subdevice) or many ?
[20:59:03] high-rez: On my hardware, for example, I understand that due to a bug I have to specify the specific plughw device in order to get alsa to output correctly.
[20:59:49] wagnerrp: digital... audio?
[21:00:01] high-rez: Right, digital audio.
[21:00:09] wagnerrp: that depends on your hardware
[21:00:19] wagnerrp: some hardware outright doesnt support muxing into HDMI
[21:00:26] high-rez: Well I have an nvidia onboard hdmi (not in use) and a geforce 210.
[21:00:38] high-rez: The question is with the geforce 210, how many subdevices should it have ?
[21:00:46] wagnerrp: some only supports SPDIF over HDMI, and requires you connect the SPDIF headers to your board to pass through
[21:00:50] high-rez: Mine has four subdevices, but I think I read that its an enumeration bug ?
[21:00:59] wagnerrp: a GF210 should have onboard hardware, for proper output
[21:01:14] wagnerrp: i would imagine it would have one audio device per output
[21:01:16] high-rez: Right, my card has real hdmi audio. But how many subdevices should it have ?
[21:02:28] high-rez: And if it is supposed to have multiple devices (the hdmi output) – are those devices used for different thnings? E.g. device 3 for ac3/dts, device8 for lpcm ?
[21:03:13] high-rez: E.g. this is the aplay -l output for my geforce 210: http://pastebin.ca/1895703

[23:08:44] Brik1: when its not enabled I get the overscan (cuts off top some)
[23:08:58] skd5aner: so, if you go in, you'll probably see a lot of fox, nbc, abc, and cbs icons that technically would work, but if we "approve" them now, then the folks would never benefit if a local icon ever came around

[23:10:31] skd5aner: If you are looking to lesson overscan, you can use nvidia-settings and modify overscan with the slider... but you must SAVE the settings for them to span x sessions
[23:11:00] skd5aner: however, my problem is I have underscan, and the tool doesn't allow you to "grow" the screen to create overscan
[23:11:06] Beirdo: bradlis7: you want a cropping in playback?

[23:12:51] skd5aner: bradlis7: you may be able to do it via xorg.conf, but the nvidia-settings gui doesn't allow you to add overscan, just subtract

[23:22:56] skd5aner: dinner is here, so good luck
[23:24:05] bradlis7: thanks
[23:24:13] skd5aner: if you ask me, this is the one thing that truely "sucks" about mythtv... yes, I said it! Trying to get scanned digital channels aligned to listing data is way overly complicated for the average user
[23:24:29] skd5aner: but, that's my only major complaint... so :)
[23:25:11] bradlis7: yeah, it's still great overall though
[23:25:35] Beirdo: so don't scan? :)
[23:25:36] Beirdo: hehe
[23:25:50] ** Beirdo ducks and runs **
[23:25:55] bradlis7: manually add? :)
[23:26:17] Beirdo: not sure how else you'd sanely do it other than scanning
[23:26:24] bradlis7: lol, yeah
[23:26:32] iamlindoro: skd5aner, sucks about mythtv as opposed to any other DVR? Every single hobbyist DVR has the same issue, there's nothing we can do about it

[23:27:02] Beirdo: yeah, it's a nature of the beast

[23:27:45] bradlis7: someday, i may have to dig into the workings of DTV channel tuning, but for now, I'll just suck it up and use the interface. By the time I learn, they'll have it working anyways

[23:56:29] Brik1: is mythtv getting an embeded database? Whats wrong with mysql?
[23:57:10] Beirdo: the plan is embedded mysql
[23:57:17] Beirdo: ease of setup, etc
[23:57:26] ** Beirdo shrugs **
[23:58:05] Brik1: ahh, okay – seems fine as is. I would rather see a better scan for channels

[23:58:46] Beirdo: one way or the other
[23:59:02] iamlindoro: The scanner is fine, it's the UI/user experience you don't like
[23:59:08] iamlindoro: scanner is excellent, even
[23:59:16] clever: embeding mysql means you no longer have to fuss with getting the mysql perms right and keeping mysqld online
[23:59:42] Brik1: while i'm making suggestions – how about a better end user gui experience? think xbmc.
[23:59:59] wagnerrp: how would you improve the gui?
