[01:12:31] gizmobay: my bad
[01:13:15] jamesd2: its safe in linux, but in other OSes it kills all operations besides init, so it can be deadly if ran as root.

[11:16:44] Tanthrix: Dibblah: Oh? As opposed to what?
[11:16:45] Dibblah: ie heads unload off the platters.
[11:16:59] Dibblah: Touching down.
[11:19:02] Tanthrix: Yikes. smartctl is showing my load cycle count as 72,300 with only 1500 hours on the drive.

[11:20:48] Dibblah: And there is a solution for the "issue"
[11:21:28] Tanthrix: Well, the date is irrelevent if the info is true, since my WD Green appears to be doing the same thing.
[11:21:32] Tanthrix: Guess it's time to download that app.

[11:23:51] Dibblah: And if they are WD greens, it's completely unnecessary.
[11:24:03] Dibblah: Since, as above, the head load / unload is off the disk.
[11:24:08] Tanthrix: Care to elaborate? I'm not sure why you would call it an "issue" if the drives are indeed only rated for 300k parks, and they're parking like crazy for no good reason.
[11:24:13] Dibblah: So no landing / lifting shocks.
[11:24:41] Dibblah: The issue with _most_ hds is that the head is parked on a non-data part of the media.
[11:25:09] Dibblah: The Green drives park the heads off the media and appear to spin the media up to speed, then apply the heads.
[11:25:24] Dibblah: Which means 0 wear on a load / unload cycle.
[11:25:42] Dibblah: It _does_ mean far higher first-access latency, though.
[11:25:50] sid3windr: Tanthrix: in some hotels the bathroom has a speaker that outputs what the tv is outputting.. I find it rather annoying
[11:26:32] Tanthrix: Dibblah: Physical movement != 0 wear, regardless of how it is designed.
[11:26:54] justinh: sid3windr: some hotels have TVs? :-O
[11:27:17] Tanthrix: Dibblah: Especially for movements in great numbers. That's why even the best camera shutters are usually only rated at 300,000k. Hardly any real force involved, but the materials just can't handle that much cumulative stress.
[11:27:42] justinh: I'm still amazed HDDs work at all
[11:28:00] Tanthrix: sid3windr: I can imagine that would be annoying, though I was implying an optional, turn-on-at-will design. ;)
[11:28:24] Tanthrix: justinh: Aye! They are magnificent and magical.
[11:29:02] Dibblah: Tanthrix: the only moving parts here that touch anything else are the head actuator bearing, the load / unload ramp and the head support.
[11:29:03] sid3windr: hehe
[11:29:16] Dibblah: Unlike a camera shutter.
[11:29:17] sid3windr: justinh: I think most do? ;)
[11:29:47] Dibblah: The load / unload ramp doesn't touch the head.
[11:29:48] justinh: hotel rooms are for crashing out in, drunk
[11:30:15] Dibblah: It's just like a vinyl pickup and the handle on the side of it.
[11:30:17] Tanthrix: Dibblah: Then why has WD specified a 300k limit on LCC's?
[11:30:53] justinh: Dibblah: the scale is slightly different with a vinyl turntable though ;-)
[11:32:14] Dibblah: Tanthrix: I have no idea.

[16:11:34] sid3windr: because my case has no possibility for a fan

[21:25:57] high-rez: I have been occassionally hitting a problem where the frontend render thread fails to die off – or myabe it does die off – but when creating a new thread, we see an error because it thinks there's already a render thread hogging the resource. The result is "Failed to initialize A/V sync" on screen message. Is this a known issue ?

You may want to mention it to him in #mythtv (just leave the message with his nick up front and he'll see it) or send a message to the -dev list (and mention that you hang ...
