[03:58:30] jared3227: just installed myth earlier today and have since screwed it up. I would like to completely uninstall it so i can start over. need somone to walk me through getting rid of it to the point i dont have leftovers that screw up adding it again
[04:06:15] tank-man: how did you install it?
[04:09:57] jared3227: ubuntu add remove
[04:10:09] jared3227: just removed it through there
[04:10:21] jared3227: removed it all in synamptic
[04:10:29] RyeBrye: that should remove it all then
[04:10:41] jared3227: and did a search for mythtv and deleted all the files i could find
[04:10:55] jared3227: well there seemed to be some left over files
[04:11:31] jared3227: can i remove mysql to make sure i got it all or would there be something else dependant
[04:11:46] jared3227: right now its pretty much a base ubuntu 9.04 install
[04:11:58] jared3227: but added open office database
[04:14:14] ** clever shakes his head **
[04:14:18] RyeBrye: just drop mythconverg if you have to
[04:14:47] RyeBrye: mysql -u root -p (enter) then type "drop database mythconverg;"
[04:15:02] RyeBrye: assuming you still have a blank root passwrod, which... I'm guessing you do
[04:16:14] jared3227: well somewhere along the way i cant seem to get into mysql using mysql administrator or the command you just gave
[04:16:21] jared3227: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)
[04:16:28] jared3227: thats the error
[04:16:30] clever: then mysql isnt running
[04:16:37] jared3227: oh
[04:16:55] jared3227: so how do i get it running?
[04:16:58] clever: which could also cause major problems with mythtv itself
[04:17:14] clever: sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start
[04:18:07] jared3227: starting failed
[04:18:18] clever: then something is majorly wrong with mysql
[04:18:26] clever: which could explain your original mythtv problems
[04:18:33] jared3227: yes indeed
[04:18:40] clever: are any of the drives full?
[04:18:52] jared3227: not even close
[04:19:02] clever: then you should check the sql error logs
[04:19:18] clever: might say something in /var/log/daemon.log or /var/log/mysql/
[04:22:34] jared3227: Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' exists!
[04:22:41] jared3227: that give any clues?
[04:22:45] clever: not realy
[04:22:52] clever: ##mysql may know more about mysql
[04:23:09] clever: #mysql may know even more
[04:23:15] jared3227: k
[04:23:36] Shadow__X: hey clever so how many hours have you stayed up this timne
[04:23:51] jared3227: what about just removing it in synaptic? and then re add myth which should reinstall it since its a dependant
[04:24:04] clever: Shadow__X: less then normal:P
[04:24:10] Shadow__X: jared3227, mythtv depends on mysql
[04:24:16] Shadow__X: so if mysql no working niether will myth
[04:24:25] jared3227: right
[04:24:26] clever: jared3227: and what nobody ever thinks, is that the config(and databases) are kept when you do that, so you dont fix anything
[04:24:40] Shadow__X: ah well thats good sleep is good
[04:24:45] clever: the program itself is allmost never broken
[04:24:51] jared3227: ohh
[04:24:55] clever: and dpgk will keep the config intact
[04:25:00] clever: keeping your problem intact:P
[04:25:32] jared3227: even with a complete removal?
[04:25:41] clever: enless you use the purge command
[04:25:46] clever: but its better to just fix it in the first place
[04:25:53] jared3227: hmm k
[04:25:59] clever: so go ask the #Mysql guys whats broken
[04:26:07] jared3227: ok thanks alot for your help

[05:53:33] Varanger: I have a strange problem, I have upgraded distro and now whenever I enter to mythbackend or frontend I get all the texts scrappy... I can't read anything... is it common?
[05:53:42] Varanger: what can be happening?
[05:54:07] wagnerrp: someone else mentioned some buggy text upgrading from 8.10 to 9.04
[05:54:49] Varanger: wagnerrp: I am using Ubuntu 8.10
[05:55:14] wagnerrp: you just upgraded to 8.10?
[05:55:19] Varanger: the funny thing is that I don't get the funny text if I enter to the backend through mytbuntu control center
[05:55:46] Varanger: I always use Ubuntu one-before-the-last version
[05:56:22] wagnerrp: anyway, debugging of mythtv on ubuntu should really be handled by #ubuntu or #ubuntu-mythtv

[07:57:09] cpg: i am getting timeouts in 2 3 4 5 6 ... 11
[07:57:25] wagnerrp: the low frequencies are typically analog
[07:57:37] wagnerrp: higher frequencies (78+) are usually digital
[07:57:39] cpg: skipping 11–1 because it thinks it's encrypted
[07:57:40] purserj (purserj!n=purserj@k-sit.com) has quit (Read error: 54 (Connection reset by peer))
[07:57:44] cpg: interesting that is NBC-HD
[07:58:08] wagnerrp: wait... channel 11? or program id 11–1?
[07:58:09] mchou: dude, like I said, mythtv scanner is borked
[07:58:11] cpg: well, the TV sees 11–1 as nbc in hd
[07:58:37] wagnerrp: the tv with a qam tuner?
[07:58:38] cpg: says Skipping QAM-256 Channel 11 on 1 – Encrypted Channel
[07:59:09] wagnerrp: digital channels can define a arbitrary channel number
[07:59:10] cpg: yes, it's an lcd from vizio, hd
[07:59:25] wagnerrp: so channel 11–1 could actually be on frequency channel 100
[07:59:31] cpg: i see
[07:59:39] mchou: cpg: http://www.silicondust.com/hdhomerun/lineupui/US:94087
[07:59:43] cpg: maybe i can let it fly
[07:59:58] mchou: cpg: that tells you all you need to know
[08:00:35] cpg: mchou: thanks – how do i use that information?
[08:01:10] wagnerrp: you run the mythtv channel scanner
[08:01:19] wagnerrp: and if it doesnt pick up all those channels, then you have to try something else
[08:01:32] cpg: weird
[08:01:45] mchou: cpg: KQEDDT (as an example) is at 117–2
[08:01:55] wagnerrp: if need be, there are some scripts online you can find that will convert the hdhomerun_config output into a channels.conf, and then you can import that channels.conf into mythtv
[08:02:00] cpg: this used to work two years ago when i tried it
[08:02:24] cpg: i would have thought it would be smoother by now, not regress.
[08:02:35] mchou: cpg: so that means frequency corresponding to (old analog) channel 117, multiplex 2
[08:02:36] cpg: i see wagnerrp
[08:03:04] cpg: should i try QAM256 or 64?
[08:03:22] wagnerrp: what does that page say?
[08:03:45] mchou: cpg: so a quick sanity check is to tune to "channel" 117 on HDHR, and see if you receive KQEDDT
[08:03:55] mchou: cpg: qam256
[08:04:20] wagnerrp: you look at that page, and it says all those channels are qam256
[08:04:34] mchou: cpg: and like I said, use HDHR utils
[08:04:48] wagnerrp: most providers use qam256, 64 only provides half the bandwidth
[08:05:52] mchou: cpg: I use KQEDDT as example because it not encrypted and has 24 hr programming
[08:05:53] cpg: oh, i see i can scan with the hdhr tools
[08:06:02] mchou: lol
[08:06:25] mchou: I've been telling you that for the last half HOUR
[08:06:28] cpg: the wiki just said discover
[08:06:32] mchou: wth
[08:06:33] hadees (hadees!n=hadees@mail.peoplefund.org) has quit (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))
[08:06:44] wagnerrp: you can scan, but then you have to dump the output to a file, convert the file, import the file, and deal with inconsistencies of using a channels.conf file in mythtv
[08:06:50] cpg: you were telling me there was some tool that could do it
[08:06:52] wagnerrp: use the mythtv scanner, if you are missing channels, then go from there
[08:06:57] mchou: stop messing with mythtv setup
[08:07:19] mchou: worse than useless for channel scanning
[08:07:34] wagnerrp: and the hdhr tools are just as useless
[08:07:36] cpg: so i have to find the tool to convert into the .conf file to upload into mythtv-setup
[08:07:47] mchou: no, hdhr tools work
[08:08:11] mchou: wagnerrp: you dont even have hdhr, so stop smoking dope
[08:08:25] wagnerrp: mchou: theres one hooked up in my basement
[08:08:36] cpg: mchou: ok, they may scan – now how do i put that into the mythtv db?
[08:08:45] wagnerrp: and the official tools have no mechanism for outputting a channels.conf
[08:08:51] mchou: cpg: mysql
[08:09:12] mchou: cpq: insert into syntax
[08:09:15] wagnerrp: oh, now you want him to manually enter that crap into the database?
[08:09:28] cpg: there's got to be some scripts
[08:09:29] mchou: wagnerrp: are you frigging daft?
[08:09:37] cpg: please
[08:10:02] cpg: just trying to get an idea of what's possible here
[08:10:13] cpg: willing to hunt for scripts, etc.
[08:10:13] mchou: cpg: you can even use that link I gave you, no need for scanning even
[08:10:43] cpg: mchou: again – how do i use that info?
[08:10:55] mchou: transform the xml source and import direct into mythtv db
[08:11:14] mchou: cpg: I JUST told you how to use that info
[08:11:15] cpg: no tool for that??
[08:11:28] cpg: mchou: you have told me abstractly
[08:12:01] mchou: dude, a script to do this takes about 8 lines
[08:12:18] mchou: abstractly? I gave you KQEDDT example
[08:12:21] cpg: extracting the right fields from xml and transform into mysql takes knowing the fields and the structures
[08:12:44] cpg: i don't really know the details of the fields needed
[08:12:56] cpg: most likely i would really bork the db
[08:12:57] mchou: right. dtv_multiplex and channels table
[08:13:35] mchou: bork the DB? that's why backups exist
[08:13:58] cpg: hehe
[08:14:07] cpg: i can see the format of the table
[08:14:12] mchou: cpg: right
[08:14:34] mchou: look at the fields, it aint tough to figure out
[08:14:43] cpg: if i can do it once i may just as well writ something that does it automatically from within mythtv-setup and send a patch
[08:15:29] cpg: if it weren't 1.15am, i'd challenge you :)
[08:15:30] mchou: name, callsign, dtv_mplex, subchannel
[08:16:08] mchou: and of course dont forget xmltvid or whatever it's called
[08:16:24] cpg: anyone of those could cause the code the barf. seems like a minefield to me.
[08:16:40] mchou: dude
[08:16:44] cpg: i could easily spend 2 hours just trying
[08:17:13] mchou: it doesnt take 2 hours to parse xml
[08:17:28] mchou: and import into db
[08:17:51] cpg: the mojo on getting the fields right i think could take a lot of fiddling
[08:17:57] cpg: i do this all the time (in ruby and ror, mind you)
[08:18:01] mchou: takes at most 10 minutes of thinking, 2 minutes of write a script
[08:18:09] mchou: lol
[08:18:20] cpg: you have my respects if you can do that
[08:18:43] cpg: the proclevity of mythbackend to crash tells me this could be a weekend project :)
[08:18:49] mchou: I dont care what language you use. I use sed, awk, mysql if you care to know
[08:19:28] mchou: and python for xml processing
[08:19:57] mchou: and that's only because python is handy
[08:20:04] clever: i mainly use php, but have recently done a bit of work with QXml in c++
[08:20:21] cpg: i am fairly confident on my technical skillz to do it (i built amahi from scratch), however, it's the fields and details that really seems a potential black hole
[08:20:34] mchou: there is no black hole
[08:20:45] mchou: I do it all the time
[08:21:02] ** cpg kneels upon mchou **
[08:21:14] mchou: whenever cable lineups change channel assignments
[08:21:27] mchou: which happens regularly
[08:21:46] cpg: it would be useful to put those scripts to work
[08:22:04] cpg: plug them into the scanning mechanism in mythtv-setup
[08:22:10] mchou: no
[08:22:10] cpg: using the hdhr tools
[08:22:25] cpg: i notice yesterday that the hdhr box is selling in frys now
[08:22:28] mchou: mythtv scanning needs to be fixed for real
[08:22:34] mchou: not using scripts
[08:22:54] wagnerrp: the mythtv scanner tool got completely dumped and replaced in trunk a few weeks ago
[08:23:01] wagnerrp: its still being tuned
[08:23:04] mchou: scripts are too hacky
[08:23:21] cpg: i con't case how it's done
[08:23:41] cpg: if it's so easy, it could be plugged into the scanning mechanism
[08:23:49] cpg: wagnerrp: great to hear
[08:23:55] cpg: i will be looking forward to the new one
[08:24:06] mchou: cpg: devs care how it's done cause scripts would bee to much of a bitch to maintain....never mind external dependencies
[08:24:14] mchou: be*
[08:24:28] cpg: mostly my efforts are with amahi and new apps, but mythtv is probably one of the most, if not the most, compelling app ...
[08:24:42] cpg: mchou: understood
[08:25:03] cpg: maybe i will give it a shot in the new rev
[08:26:26] mchou: I love frys
[08:27:09] mchou: who else sells refurbs at significant discount and take returns?
[08:27:13] cpg: oh ya
[08:27:39] ** mchou just bought a vacuum cleaner for $30 **
[08:27:43] mchou: lol
[08:28:00] cpg: looks like after a while left alone the mythtv-setup scanner does pick up some channels
[08:28:06] mchou: cant even get the filter for that cheap :)
[08:28:18] cpg: lol
[08:28:36] mchou: frys
[08:28:41] mchou: luvin it
[08:28:42] cpg: looks like i may have dodged a bullet here
[08:29:03] cpg: i got some channels
[08:29:21] cpg: maybe not all, looks like. but this is good to test the app as one-click
[08:29:52] mchou: indeed. some is certainly not all, especially with mythtv scanning
[08:30:07] mchou: and some is not even some
[08:30:19] mchou: cause some are just "random"
[08:31:01] cpg: interesting
[08:31:22] mchou: you want reliable go with HDHR utils or scan (in the case of PCIe) cards
[08:31:41] mchou: from dvb tools
[08:31:52] mchou: accept no substitutes
[08:32:36] cpg: it aborted at the end. argggh http://amahi.pastebin.com/d10208ce8
[08:32:57] mchou: lol
[08:33:00] mchou: 3??
[08:33:04] mchou: wtf?
[08:33:10] mchou: worse than useless
[08:33:50] cpg: no .. the 3 was not the total
[08:33:51] wagnerrp: thats one channel, not the whole scan
[08:33:56] cpg: but it did crash
[08:34:11] cpg: wagnerrp: correct, not the whole scan
[08:35:03] cpg: looks like it saved the channels it got
[08:35:07] cpg: phhew
[08:36:54] mchou: so did dexter get canned from showtime or what?

[12:07:02] at0m|c: slayven: commercials, on TV as on radio, are often dynamically squashed using a compressor, to get the dynamics out and make them as loud as possible. the only thing that could make a difference in relative perceived level, is applying compression to the whole stream eh, maybe using dmix and ladspa.
[12:07:37] at0m|c: slayven: but that would also get the dynamic life out of the parts you *would* like to see eh

[14:56:14] mzb: got another one more recently which has *excellent* sound, but the battery life and range suck
[14:56:16] darkdrgn2k: aaa so 12voip you have to buy credit ever 3 months
[14:56:22] mzb: yep
[14:56:27] darkdrgn2k: how much do you need to buy
[14:56:41] mzb: 10 euro iirc
[14:56:50] darkdrgn2k: hmmm
[14:56:56] mzb: and just use your "free call" time
[14:57:15] mzb: but that's not to say that you don't use other providers
[14:57:22] darkdrgn2k: :-D
[14:57:35] mzb: ie: I only used 12voip for (non-essential) international calls
[14:58:26] mzb: so the idea is, once you have an asterisk box up and working, you can do some *clever stuff* (TM)

[14:58:41] darkdrgn2k: and how that "it just works" tm
[14:58:41] mzb: eg: popups on your screen for incoming calls

[15:00:18] mzb: yep, cost to you = 0

[15:13:05] mzb: err
[15:13:54] mzb: if you want to _make_ calls from normal phones you will need FXS devices (think of 'S' as 'SPEAK INTO', if that helps)
[15:14:19] darkdrgn2k: ATAs right
[15:14:25] mzb: if you want to receive calls from your PSTN you will need an FXO device
[15:14:32] mzb: both are ATA's

[15:15:08] mzb: ref: my pic. top of the three in the middle is an SPA3000. the two below that are SPA2000's

[15:20:01] mzb: or anything you want ... you don't need Asterisk for an FXS device (like an SPA2000) ... you *could* just plug in the details of your VOIP provider into the SPA2000 directly
