[00:00:02] goakes: code in mysql and php all the time
[00:00:28] clever: then you shouldnt have any trouble installing the mythtv packages from your distro
[00:00:28] goakes: im not great but proficient enough
[00:00:41] clever: just read the documents
[00:01:14] goakes: how hard is it to get qam clear tunning run on the new mythtv disto
[00:01:28] clever: dont have any digital cards here :(
[00:01:41] clever: dont even get HD on my cable box
[00:02:01] goakes: you dont need to get it on your cable box to get it from the cable company
[00:02:34] goakes: most of the time locals espn ect is all ready there you just need to be able to tune what unencrypted
[00:02:50] sphery: goakes: if you install Ubuntu, then put MythTV on it, you're basically taking Ubuntu--which is configured for desktop use--and unconfiguring a bunch of it, then configuring it for use with MythTV. If you take MythBuntu, you get, er, Ubuntu configured for use with MythTV.
[00:03:07] goakes: unfortunately windows media center will not allow a 4 digit subchannel ex. 106.4002
[00:03:55] goakes: they problem for mythbuntu i see is the ablility to get around the file system and manually configure
[00:04:11] goakes: i would like to be able to edit the channel tables
[00:05:14] sphery: goakes: for that you wouldn't use the file system, you would use the MythTV channel editor in mythtv-setup or (at your own risk) MythWeb.
[00:05:25] iamlindoro: Mythbuntu is just a distro geared towards myth-- it's no different functionalitywise than simply installing myth. And you should avoid editing the channel tables AT ALL COSTS as it's not simple number swapping, you need to know how myth's code works to have any success
[00:05:26] arrrghhh: maybe that's my problem also? although the channels i'm picking up aren't 106.4002 they're 106.2...
[00:05:37] janneg: sphery: thanks
[00:05:51] sphery: And, really, MythBuntu is /just/ Ubuntu where someone else has already done all the stuff you need to do to make MythTV work on it. It's /really/ Ubuntu.
[00:06:29] arrrghhh: they stripped the stuff out of ubuntu that you wouldn't really need for a mythbox and did make the myth part brain-dead easy. the rest is getting it to work on your particular setup :D
[00:06:34] goakes: the problem i am having is that a straight foward scan will not get me what i need for the box to do
[00:06:45] sphery: janneg: yeah, figured we might get a reply from the reporter if he clicked the link and saw it was a nonexistant ticket, so I figured I'd just mention the typo.
[00:06:50] iamlindoro: How do you know? You haven't even started with myth?
[00:06:53] phunyguy: you lose nothing with configuring.
[00:07:02] Computer_Czar (Computer_Czar!n=Drake@71.5.23.96.ptr.us.xo.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:07:15] goakes: no i have mythbuntu installed
[00:07:31] goakes: i have done a scan
[00:07:50] arrrghhh: did it pick up _anything_?
[00:07:57] goakes: my cable company is comcast and they dont have the clear qam channels configured correctly
[00:08:05] goakes: so im not getting all my locals
[00:08:09] arrrghhh: lol i'm in the same boat.
[00:08:11] goakes: i get alot of other stuff
[00:08:17] Maliuta (Maliuta!n=scooby@kiev.lusan.id.au) has quit (Remote closed the connection)
[00:08:20] arrrghhh: my analog is working fine from comast.
[00:08:26] arrrghhh: comcast*. but digital is not workin.
[00:08:48] goakes: no im getting them in high definition through a hvr-1800 card
[00:08:59] Maliuta (Maliuta!n=scooby@kiev.lusan.id.au) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:09:20] goakes: but i need to edit the channel list to pick up the correct channel numbers
[00:09:26] arrrghhh: your digital channels are working with comcast?
[00:09:33] Maliuta (Maliuta!n=scooby@kiev.lusan.id.au) has quit (Remote closed the connection)
[00:09:38] arrrghhh: i have a hvr-1600, should be hd digital as well as i understand it...
[00:09:40] sphery: is the HVR-1800 even supported in MythTV?
[00:09:41] goakes: comcast sends alot of channels in clear qam
[00:09:56] goakes: yes it is
[00:09:58] arrrghhh: i couldn't pick up anything in clear qam.
[00:10:11] quadtree (quadtree!n=quadtree@c-76-21-180-10.hsd1.va.comcast.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:10:12] arrrghhh: hrm maybe i should try switching the inputs...
[00:10:13] goakes: you have to set it up under the dvb settings
[00:10:17] goakes: not anolog tuner
[00:10:20] arrrghhh: well
[00:10:25] arrrghhh: i have an analog and digital
[00:10:27] arrrghhh: i set both up
[00:10:32] arrrghhh: one as dvb and one as mpeg-2
[00:10:34] sphery: goakes: ok, that's what I was thinking--the analog side isn't supported
[00:10:39] goakes: i dont know if both will work in mythtv from what i see
[00:11:04] arrrghhh: oh really? that doesn't make sense, assuming you have both inputs in the card (or 2 cards)
[00:11:06] goakes: i have a pvr-250 that im going to put in for analog if i can map the qam clear correctly
[00:11:41] goakes: the analog support isnt there for hybrid cards yet
[00:11:49] goakes: they are working on it in the beta copies
[00:12:03] arrrghhh: bummer. well i have a pvr150 i could use for analog alongside the 1600.
[00:12:35] goakes: i cant manually enter channels in media center either
[00:12:53] goakes: i wished i could go to a file and enter the frequency and have it save it
[00:13:55] sphery: goakes: there's a /lot/ more to tuning a digital channel than just specifying a frequency.
[00:14:23] sphery: for that reason, getting the mythtv channel scanner to work for you is your best bet.
[00:14:27] arrrghhh: hrm. maybe i bit off more than i could chew. i figured if my tv could get the channel, i could get the channel on myth.
[00:14:45] goakes: unfortunately no
[00:14:59] sphery: make sure you choose the right option (i.e. full scan--don't do "high" or "low" or whatever), and--more importantly--let it run to completion
[00:15:02] goakes: and it maybe that your tv will not get all thats out there
[00:15:02] arrrghhh: the channel scanner doesn't seem to scan what i need it to scan.
[00:15:13] sphery: do /not/ stop it after you see a few channels that say nothing was found
[00:15:17] Maliuta (Maliuta!n=scooby@kiev.lusan.id.au) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:15:23] Maliuta (Maliuta!n=scooby@kiev.lusan.id.au) has quit (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer))
[00:15:25] goakes: make sure you have it set for qam 256
[00:15:32] sphery: and do /not/ worry if it says that channel 3 isn't found even if you know you have a channel 3.1
[00:15:41] sphery: (because they have nothing to do with each other)
[00:15:52] arrrghhh: i always let the channel scan finish, but it always comes up with nothing. i use qam 256 with every other setting on that page. cable, cable high, cable irc etc
[00:16:07] goakes: should just have to use cable
[00:16:23] arrrghhh: sphery, so i _know_ there's a 9.1. how do i get myth to use that channel when it says nothing found for channel 9.
[00:16:35] goakes: which side do you have the cable hooked to
[00:16:43] arrrghhh: atsc
[00:16:44] sphery: arrrghhh: 9.1 is a logical channel name, it has nothing to do with frequency
[00:16:47] arrrghhh: which i thought was also digital
[00:16:51] arrrghhh: sphery, ah i see.
[00:16:53] sphery: arrrghhh: it's just a name that's included in the digital stream.
[00:17:14] arrrghhh: sphery, scans never pick up any signal at all tho...
[00:17:27] goakes: then thats right
[00:17:44] sphery: for example, my channel 9.1 is on frequency assignment 27 (what an analog TV would consider channel 27), IIRC
[00:17:54] arrrghhh: i see
[00:17:57] phunyguy: are we still talking about the direct cable line to the tuner card?
[00:18:12] sphery: oops, I guess 9.1 is on 39
[00:18:14] aBs0lut30: ok, so I got my chan changer script setup and now all I get is a blank screen...
[00:18:17] goakes: same basic pricipal phunyguy
[00:18:17] sphery: 14.0 is on 27
[00:18:29] phunyguy: ok.
[00:18:29] arrrghhh: sphery, so when myth scans channel 39 for you it shows some signal strength yes?
[00:18:43] sphery: arrrghhh: yep
[00:18:48] phunyguy: aBs0lut30: are you using an IR blaster?
[00:19:08] arrrghhh: i don't get any signal strength on any channel. i guess i'll try the other input.
[00:19:16] aBs0lut30: yup
[00:19:18] sphery: arrrghhh: but I have OTA, not cable, so my channels are /definitely/ not encrypted. On a cable network, some vast majority of channels are allowed to be encrypted.
[00:19:20] arrrghhh: i swore that one was simply labeled "analog" tho.
[00:19:40] sphery: definitely worth checking the other input, just in case
[00:19:44] arrrghhh: hrm. sphery, would my tv (w/o any cable box) be able to decrypt these channels?
[00:20:14] sphery: nope, it can only tune/decode the unencrypted channels
[00:20:34] arrrghhh: that's what i figured.
[00:20:48] arrrghhh: i _should_ be able to get the same channel lineup thru myth (with the right card) correct?
[00:20:50] doc___ (doc___!n=doc@15.Red-80-37-209.staticIP.rima-tde.net) has quit ("leaving")
[00:20:51] sphery: also, if you're scanning on a multi-core/multi-proc system, make sure you pin the mythtv-setup program to a single core (with taskset -c 0)
[00:20:57] arrrghhh: i figured a atsc/qam/analog card would do it.
[00:20:59] sphery: arrrghhh: yep
[00:21:23] arrrghhh: uhm i think this box is just a p4 single core.
[00:21:38] arrrghhh: alright i'll switch inputs and rescan.
[00:21:43] aBs0lut30: humm, and now I cannot get back out of live tv...
[00:21:50] sphery: arrrghhh: assuming your TV is actually using the digital channels... I don't think the analog side of an HVR-1x00 works (though I'm not positive about the 1600)
[00:22:11] sphery: so, you won't get any of the analog channels, if I'm right about that
[00:23:16] arrrghhh: ok
[00:23:22] sphery: arrrghhh: if mythtv-setup crashes during the channel scan, you need the taskset -c 0. If it doesn't, you don't. However, a P4 with Hyped-up Threading can cause the same issues as a real multi-core/multi-proc system.
[00:23:23] arrrghhh: the pvr150 i was using previously got analog fine
[00:23:41] arrrghhh: so i can throw that back in there if i need to for analog.
[00:23:43] daum (daum!n=daum@c-24-61-13-49.hsd1.ma.comcast.net) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:23:53] sphery: arrrghhh: yep, the 150 is great for the analog stuff
[00:23:55] daum: hey guys- i'm trying ot use mythweb is there a way to have it output over my pvr 350?
[00:24:03] daum: er mythvideo, not mythweb
[00:24:07] arrrghhh: alright rescan time. brb.
[00:24:28] sphery: daum: you have to use the PVR-350 X driver with Xv support, then it just does
[00:24:55] sphery: daum: you can /not/ use the MPEG-2 decoder in the PVR-350 with anything except MPEG-2 (and, generally, only PVR-x50 recordings).
[00:25:00] daum: sphery, is there a tutorial for that? or would you mind explaining howt o set it up
[00:25:21] sphery: daum: on the bright side, there's no real reason to use the decoder (you're /much/ better off with a cheap NVIDIA (or possibly ATI) graphics card)
[00:26:00] Maliuta (Maliuta!n=scooby@kiev.lusan.id.au) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:26:09] daum: heh well i don't usually watch much other thanr ecordings, but have a movie i have that i want to watch, is it difficult to setup the xv to use it?
[00:26:26] sphery: daum: I used the PVR-350 TV out for all of 2 weeks--just long enough to determine that it was a complete waste and had /far/ more disadvantages than (its one) advantage (decoding low-resolution, easy-to-decode-on-CPU MPEG-2)
[00:26:36] sphery: daum: and that was > 4yrs ago
[00:27:00] goakes: im just the opposite with mine
[00:27:06] sphery: daum: do you have the MythTV GUI on the TV screen?
[00:27:07] goakes: use mine all the time
[00:27:23] daum: sphery, no, it is on my computer
[00:27:38] BuffyNZ (BuffyNZ!n=stuartw@ip-58-28-152-68.static-xdsl.xnet.co.nz) has joined #mythtv-users
[00:28:15] sphery: daum: then you'll need to switch it so that /both/ the video and the GUI are on the TV and it will likely just work (I'm pretty sure any competent distro has the PVR-350 driver with Xv support in it)
[00:29:05] sphery: daum: I /think/ you may also have to uncheck the box that says, "Use the PVR-350's TV out / MPEG decoder"
[00:29:12] arrrghhh: well nothing yet. scanning with cable & qam-256
[00:29:21] sphery: (otherwise it will only play MPEG-2)
[00:29:48] goakes: arrrghh: you will only pick up qam on channels that are not in your channel lineup for analog
[00:29:58] goakes: so most likely high numbered channels
[00:30:08] sphery: daum: and you need the ivtv-fb kernel module loaded and properly configured, too
[00:30:32] sphery: daum: then again, with 0.21-fixes playback profile support, you might not need to uncheck, "Use the PVR-350's TV out / MPEG decoder"

[00:31:26] sphery: daum: however, no one is doing anything other than fixing compile errors in the PVR-350 output code, so really, your best bet is to get a real video card and a real sound card and use the PVR-350 as if it were a PVR-250 or a PVR-150 (i.e. just for encoding)
[00:31:35] sphery: the 350's TV out isn't really supported, anymore
[00:31:38] aBs0lut30: with the guide up how to I make it tune to a channel?
[00:34:32] arrrghhh: goakes, i don't have an analog lineup currently.
[00:34:33] BuffyNZ: Hi folks, I have been using my mythtv for a few months now, but over the last month I have had a strange problem. After a few moments of watching my DVB (A Sky2PC/Skystar 2 DVB-S) loses lock, and does not return. Sometimes a reboot will fix it, sometimes not.. Any suggestions on where to look?
[00:35:23] arrrghhh: so i know not to scan on the mpeg-2. that's the analog, right? i always scan with dvb : 0. i never get any signal tho!
[00:35:51] goakes: arrrghh: you will not have analog at all anyway but if you get an analog channel on channel 10 their will not be a digital channel of 10–1
[00:36:29] goakes: arrrgh: they cant run both analog and digital on the same frequency
[00:37:37] goakes: you will constantly lock and unlock while scanning for digital stations
[00:38:00] goakes: it will only lock for a sec and write to the channel table
[00:38:33] arrrghhh: it says on the output "no signal" on every channel.
[00:38:42] arrrghhh: and "channel timeout" or something to that effect

[00:39:40] arrrghhh: timeout scanning – chan x no signal
[00:41:41] arrrghhh: i'm scanning on the right input, the dvbinput not the mpeg-2 right?
[00:42:52] goakes: right
[00:43:45] arrrghhh: hrm. digital scanning just does not seem to be working. when i used the pvr150 & sd's channel lineup population method i finally got video corresponding to the correct channel. then i wanted digital :S
[00:45:19] goakes: it was a pain for me also
[00:45:25] goakes: i know its possible
[00:45:31] goakes: just not easy

[00:53:57] a1fa: HL-S6165w
[00:53:58] iamlindoro: Yeah, that would be the analog side-- You should try using the linux scan utility to get a channels.conf, and use that to feed kaffeine or mplayer and see if the card itself is functional
[00:54:05] a1fa: he said brand new bulb
[00:54:07] arrrghhh: i heard kaffenine can do it, but i couldn't figure it out. and this is running xfce so there's a ton of modules to install for kaffeine
[00:54:11] a1fa: how long does a bulb last?
[00:54:22] iamlindoro: if you can watch TV in kaffeine or mplayer, then the fault is with the myth channel scanner

[00:55:21] a1fa: iamlindoro: what do you think of Samsung HL-S6165w
[00:55:25] a1fa: 61" rear projected DLP?
[00:55:54] iamlindoro: a1fa, My folks have *I think* exactly that model-- it's a beautiful, bright picture, but I remember it having a fairly aggressive overscan
[00:55:57] phunyguy: lol dmb_ nice
[00:56:01] phunyguy: thanks for the heads up
[00:56:02] iamlindoro: not an issue in myth as you can adjust using the screen wizard
[00:57:21] a1fa: awesome
[00:57:24] a1fa: they want $750 for it
[00:57:27] a1fa: deal or what?
[00:58:20] iamlindoro: Hmm. I'm not sure I wouldn't just save a few hundred more and get a 40-something LCD, personally, but if you've got the room and don't mind the depth, and most importantly, if *you're* satisfied with it, then go for it
[00:58:27] iamlindoro: doesn't matter what anyone else would do
[00:59:27] a1fa: its 61" :)
[00:59:33] a1fa: i wonder whats the viewing angle on it
[01:06:21] arrrghhh: i've been really happy w/my 42" lcd. great viewing angle. ambilight is sweet.
[01:06:43] a1fa: aww fuck its 720p :(
[01:06:51] arrrghhh: boooo
[01:07:03] arrrghhh: it is only $750 lol
[01:07:12] a1fa: ;)
[01:07:15] arrrghhh: my 42" lcd was $1500 in sept '07.

[01:08:56] arrrghhh: a name brand one?

[01:10:41] arrrghhh: hardly any other inputs lol
[01:10:44] goakes: i dont have anything to push 1080 p to it
[01:10:58] goakes: but my projector in the theatre room does 1080p

[01:11:48] arrrghhh: nice
[01:12:13] arrrghhh: when i last looked at 'em it was hard to find ones that did full 1080p
[01:12:27] arrrghhh: unless you wanted to spend north of 3k lol
[01:13:41] arrrghhh: well i was really looking forward to setting up this myth box to completely replace the tv in a sense. i'll just use it for everything but capturing tv i guess? lame.
[01:14:17] arrrghhh: maybe i'll try to scrounge up an antenna haha
[01:15:28] BuffyNZ: Hi folks, I have been using my mythtv for a few months now, but over the last month I have had a strange problem. After a few moments of watching via my DVB (A Sky2PC/Skystar 2 DVB-S) loses lock, and does not return. Sometimes a reboot will fix it, sometimes not.. Any suggestions on where to look?
[01:16:17] BuffyNZ: dvbtune shows no lock also, during these times.
[01:17:47] iamlindoro: BuffyNZ, If something outside of Myth (dvbtune) is showing the same behavior, then it's driver or hardware related-- you should follow up in #linuxtv
[01:18:23] BuffyNZ: Yeah, fair call. I will jump over there. Thanks!
[01:18:31] iamlindoro: no problem , good luck

[01:36:49] iamlindoro: (and they have a wiki too)
[01:36:49] arrrghhh: ok
[01:37:01] jroysdon: Anyone using ACPI_Wakeup stuff with Mythtv? It says you don't want to use it if your backend is also a frontend, but folks at my house will forget to turn it off...
[01:37:11] iamlindoro: http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Testing_your_DVB_device
[01:37:20] iamlindoro: follow up with them after following that
[01:37:42] jroysdon: I'm wondering if I could at least tell it (via a cron-job) if it is still on at say midnight to turn itself off, or at least enable it to turn-off if idle
[01:37:58] jroysdon: Then at after say 8am disable turning off on idle
[01:38:20] jroysdon: (good news is that my ACPI is working great with hibernate and wakealarm)
[01:38:32] jroysdon: Has anyone done this with a dual backend/frontend?
[01:39:10] arrrghhh: jroysdon, well you can set a cronjob to shut the machine down if it's running, that's easy.
[01:39:20] jroysdon: (also, I rewrote my power button even to be a hibernate and not power off, so really all folks have to do is hit hibernate – but I guess I need it to do a check to see if hibernate should occur if there is a recording going on...
[01:39:40] arrrghhh: now to wake a machine at a specific time, i always have a server running. that server sends out a "magic" packet and wakes the machine up using wakeonlan.
[01:39:40] jroysdon: arrrghhh, right, but I don't want it to just shutoff, I want it to enable the idle flag in mythtv setup
[01:39:46] arrrghhh: oh
[01:39:48] arrrghhh: sorry.
[01:40:08] a1fa: iamlindoro: just took out $750
[01:40:11] CaptObviousman: so, still got El Silly roaming around making noise?
[01:40:15] jroysdon: I don't want to have another machine on at home at this point to manage it (but yeah, I get the magic packet thing, I was working with it last night and it works good)
[01:40:15] a1fa: i dont know if its worth for 720p
[01:40:17] CaptObviousman: or did he leave finally?
[01:41:14] jroysdon: So, in MythTV Setup, General, there is a Shutdown/Wakeup Options page
[01:41:36] jroysdon: I want to turn off/on the "Block shutdown before client connected" option based on my cronjob
[01:41:37] andreax1 (andreax1!n=andreaz@p57B97D3E.dip.t-dialin.net) has quit (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer))
[01:41:50] jroysdon: I'm guessing this option is stored via the sql db, or is it written in a text file somewhere?
[01:42:02] jroysdon: (and I'm guessing I need to restart the backend to get it to re-read it, right?)
[01:42:41] jroysdon: Oh, or there is a Pre Shutdown check-command option, perhaps that would be better... it could check and the check script could look at the time of day
[01:43:18] thefRont is now known as thefront
[01:43:19] jroysdon: The check would always fail if from 0700 – 2359, but from 0000 – 0659 it would use the regular idle shutdown timeout option
[01:43:36] jroysdon: Does that make sense? Heh, is anyone crazy enough to try this sort of thing?
[01:44:01] jroysdon: (I just figure, if no one is watching it, and there are no shows on during that time, might as well have the thing shut itself off, as it knows how to startup at the right time it would appear)
[01:44:52] jroysdon: Does it only turn on if there is a show to record, or will it turn itself on for it's cronjobs (Schedules direct, mythbackup, imdb jobs, etc.)?

[02:37:08] jroysdon: Just have a centralized web interface where folks could mark off this sort of info, and even better push back info from mythtv if such an interface was added (sort of like notifying the centralized warning system that X users have checked "override" or whatever)

[03:42:22] AngryElf: I've got too much vertical overscan from my nvidia card — anyone know how to correct that?
[03:42:25] iamlindoro: jpabq, I record so few miniseries that I hadn't seen it-- definitely one that cries out for a fix, though.
[03:43:10] iamlindoro: jpabq, If I didn't know how jealously guarded the scheduler code is, I'd likely try to tackle the on-the-fly schedule adjustment for sports in the code, too
[03:43:39] jpabq: iamlindoro: that would be cool
[03:44:06] iamlindoro: jpabq, I've read the archives, though, getting anything into the scheduler is questionable :)
[03:44:17] phunyguy: RATS – so much for having the 500 as a master backend
[03:44:29] jpabq: iamlindoro: my patch just fudges the data as it is grabbed from schedules direct. I think bruce wanted to come up with a schedular solution instead.
[03:44:32] phunyguy: it wont post with my dvico fusion card plugged in
[03:44:52] phunyguy: prolly has different power requirements
[03:45:14] phunyguy: I really wish this was easier.

[03:58:34] AngryElf: is there any way to figure out what resolution and frequency my vid card is running at?
[03:58:49] AngryElf: ...not based on some GUI or my xorg file
[03:59:01] RyeBrye: for resolution – yet
[03:59:26] AngryElf: yet?
[03:59:29] RyeBrye: you can create an image that has grid lines labeled at various sizes and open it up in some imageviewer full screen and tell it to show actual pixes
[03:59:32] RyeBrye: err actual pixels
[04:00:07] RyeBrye: overscan is often an issue with the TV
[04:00:11] AngryElf: that doesn't seem very accurate
[04:00:19] AngryElf: overscan is the issue i'm trying to fix
[04:00:39] RyeBrye: How is that not accurate? knowing exactly how many pixels your display is showing?
[04:01:14] AngryElf: because the tv is overscanning, i wouldn't see them anyways
[04:01:43] RyeBrye: right – you wouldn't see the edges, but if the top left line you saw was 20, 10 or something – you would know exactly how much overscan you are missing on the top left edge

[04:02:43] RyeBrye: it's an HDTV, right?
[04:03:06] AngryElf: yes
[04:03:26] RyeBrye: how are you driving it? vga? dvi? dvi-> hdmi?
[04:03:34] AngryElf: myth works fine, but I want it to be corrected for the desktop and mplayer as well
[04:03:41] AngryElf: yes, dvi->hdmi
[04:04:03] RyeBrye: does the TV have a "just scan" option or something to adjust the overscan on the TV?
[04:04:38] AngryElf: no
[04:04:40] AngryElf: not vertically
[04:04:43] RyeBrye: I have two HDTV's – one is dead-on with overscan and the other overscans by about 20 to 30 pixels on all the edges even in "just scan" mode.
[04:05:24] RyeBrye: I haven't been bothered by the overscan in the destkop because I only use the TV for myth
[04:08:22] magius_pendragon: anyone feel like helping with a dual-card setup? I have 2 cards, 1 is a pvr 250, that one seems to be working okay, the other is an hvr 1600: The analog side is having issues recording at low numbered sides, and I can't configure the dvb side because the option isn't in the setup. Also, I'm not sure I set up the input groups correctly, though that seems functional. I can't switch tuners in live-tv using the Y key either

[04:18:42] hadees: magius_pendragon, i know it says it needs 2.6.25, i just don't get why it wouldn't be limited to 2.6.22 and before since that is when ivtv was added right?
[04:19:18] magius_pendragon: hadees: oh i'm not sure, I just know it started failing to build right around when ivtv became included in the kernel :)
[04:20:19] hadees: magius_pendragon, it was just confusing me, either it is wrong or there is something up i don't understand, either way i guess i don't need it for anythign

[06:27:19] iamlindoro: watched, commflagging, skiplist, cutlist, bookmark, expire eligible, subtitles, assisted listening, Close Caption, 720, 1080, widescreen, and HD
[06:27:28] iamlindoro: And that should do it
[06:28:11] RyeBrye: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:5_1_channel . . . d)_label.svg and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:2_0_channel . . . o)_label.svg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1_0_channels_(mono)_label.svg <-- what about those kind of icons for the different states? They aren't trademarked and are pretty easily understood
[06:29:21] justinh: I considered them, but I wasn't sure how they'd play out
[06:29:41] RyeBrye: I think they'd work nicely in your theme
[06:30:02] RyeBrye: and they are becoming pretty standard on receivers and such
[06:30:38] RyeBrye: perhaps put a little "DD" in the middle of the 5.1 to represent dolby digital?

[06:33:37] RyeBrye: is the deaf guy for CC?
[06:33:48] RyeBrye: oh, nm
[06:33:50] RyeBrye: assisted listening
[06:33:54] iamlindoro: the HD720 and 1080 icons are my own
[06:34:08] iamlindoro: borrowing from the design of the "Hd Ready" icon
[06:34:53] iamlindoro: The only ones that are non-original are the Dolby Icon, CC, and assisted listening
[06:34:57] iamlindoro: everything else is my own
[06:35:20] iamlindoro: Assisted listening is the international deaf sign for assisted listening
[06:35:25] RyeBrye: cool
[06:36:41] iamlindoro: I'm rather proud fo the HD res icons and the 5.1 icon, actually :)
[06:37:02] iamlindoro: And subtitles and commflagging aren't bad either-- the others work but I'm not in love with
[06:37:32] RyeBrye: I like the cutlist and skiplist ones – they demonstrate the idea pretty well

[16:46:09] Solaris444: I'm using composite to connect to an old vcr so i can put my old tapes into mpg format. There is no guide data for these obvious, and therefore, i set the listings source to none
[16:46:19] iamlindoro_: So why would you scan for channels??

[16:46:59] iamlindoro_: I guarantee you you have never scanned a single channel on composite
[16:47:25] Solaris444: you guarantee? then how come it worked? it just added all the channels automatically, so i went and deleted all but one.

[16:49:52] Solaris444: lindoro, why the hell are you ALWAYS so rude?!
[16:50:10] jams: apropos miracle
[16:50:10] jams: miracle: nothing appropriat
[16:50:23] iamlindoro_: magius_pendragon: Input groups are for multiple capture devices sharing a physical input device like a set top box-- they allow Myth to know not to use both devices at once as they share an upstream device
[16:50:42] Solaris444: magius: my understanding is that if you have a multi-tuner card for example, you should have two input groups.
[16:50:45] iamlindoro_: magius_pendragon: There are two of them to allow for a single capture device to exist in multiple input groups
[16:51:57] EvilGuru_ (EvilGuru_!n=freddie@dyn1204-110.wlan.ic.ac.uk) has quit ()
[16:52:05] magius_pendragon: so it'll fail to schedule if any input group contains both tuners?
[16:52:15] Solaris444: which didn't answer his question. magius_pendragon: lets say a card has dual tuners. if you only have it in one input group, it can only make one recording at a time. If, however, the card is assigned to TWO input groups, you can make two recordings at a time, because it is dual-tuner
[16:52:36] Solaris444: right magius
[16:52:42] iamlindoro_: Solaris444: He asked someone to explain input groups. Which I did. Are you just trying to pick a fight because I set you straight?
[16:52:44] sphery: Solaris444: you do realize that a scan for channels on composite/S-Video would yield all of /one/ channel. However, a scan for channels on composite/S-Video that employs an external channel changer would be unbounded--it would have to run for eternity (as there's no way to know how many "channels" to scan. (DISH network goes up to 10K channels. I think some DVB-S providers may go farther.)
[16:54:01] Solaris444: set me straight, are you kidding? i'm telling you, i have done what you claim is impossible, and then when i offer to go out of my way to prove it, you behave like a jerk.
[16:54:17] ** iamlindoro_ sighs **
[16:54:32] Solaris444: sphery: the one i was using stopped after 63 channels.
[16:54:38] Solaris444: well, 0–63
[16:56:04] iamlindoro_: Anyway, dual tuner card do NOT need two input groups
[16:56:05] sphery: Solaris444: and it would add 64 channels that way (as you /always/ get a valid signal from Composite/S-Video--the /only/ way to tell a difference between a channel with something on it and one without is by inspection of the image)
[16:56:12] iamlindoro_: they'll happily work fine in "default"

[16:57:40] iamlindoro_: magius_pendragon: I'm saying for most people, ignoring input groups entirely is appropriate

[17:21:59] Solaris444: thankyou sphery
[17:22:25] sphery: really, though, you don't want to do it.
[17:22:39] sphery: Myth wasn't designed for it and there are many other programs that are much better suited to it.
[17:22:49] aBs0lut30: on a side note, got any ideas why the frontend would crash when I try and play an mp3? havent really spent the time looking into it yet as I am still tweaking tv and everything, so I dont know what the error is, but it just dies as soon as I hit play
[17:23:37] sphery: aBs0lut30: trunk?
[17:24:47] aBs0lut30: yup
[17:25:28] sphery: joe2371: finish configuring Myth and it will probably go away... It's likely the UPnP file scan coupled with a not-yet-configured MythVideo (meaning that it's scanning stuff it shouldn't be/stuck in a recursive loop/...)
[17:25:57] joe2371: ah, yes. I have UPnP disabled on my network. Perhaps that's a contributing factor.
[17:26:21] sphery: aBs0lut30: Then likely it works fine as long as you start mythfrontend and play the MP3 in MythMusic. AFAIR, if you play any TV, then play the MP3 in MythMusic, it crashes.
[17:26:32] sphery: aBs0lut30: so, it doesn't work because you chose to run trunk
[17:27:31] sphery: joe2371: Network config shouldn't have a big impact... By UPnP file scan, I mean mythbackend is searching for new videos so it can (/if/ it receives a UPnP request) serve them over UPnP.
[17:27:34] aBs0lut30: humm, dont remember if I tried to play music before working with tv... will have to give that a try when I get home...
[17:28:21] sphery: joe2371: though if you have multiple backends and/or separate hosts (i.e. remote frontends/backends), you may want to enable the UPnP to allow the remote systems to automatically find the master backend.
[17:28:43] sphery: aBs0lut30: and, really, it's playing any video (mythvideo included)
[17:29:57] joe2371: sphery: Uh, I try to avoid UPnP due to the potential security issues. Won't I be able to simply use static IPs or DNS or something to enable devices to find eachother?

[17:31:05] Dibblah: UPnP has limited security implication.
[17:31:21] Dibblah: The only misnomer that _does_ is UPnP control of firewall ports.

[17:32:10] sphery: joe2371: yeah, you can
[17:32:28] sphery: yeah, and disabling UPnP on a firewall is a good thing :)
[17:33:06] joe2371: Well, I have it nominally disabled on my routers and PCs. I think my existing DVRs use it, though. Perhaps that means that it is not blocked on broadcast, or something.
[17:33:08] sphery: joe2371: FWIW, I think "enabling" UPnP (for finding the master backend) simply means allowing multicast pings on your network (which few networks disable)
[17:33:34] Dibblah: mDNS.
[17:34:58] sphery: joe2371: on the router, disabling it is disabling UPnP control of the firewall (allowing UPnP requests to reconfigure the firewall)--exactly what Dibblah mentioned is dangerous. Disabling it on the PC's probably means that you've told Windows Media Player (or whatever) not to make its videos available to other clients via UPnP.
[17:35:33] Dibblah: I didn't say it was dangerous, I said it had security implications ;)
[17:35:38] aBs0lut30: jackson__: just recompiled with the --with-bindings=perl and its still not finding the bindings...
[17:35:38] sphery: To truly disable it, you'd likely have to block ports, etc., but as Dibblah said, there's little reason to do so.

[19:05:57] sphery: garrettn: Encrypted digital requires a cable box. Unencrypted digital cable is usable with any QAM-capable digital tuner (in a TV or on a digital capture card). However, using a digital tuner when you don't have the digital package may be a violation of the service agreement.

[19:14:25] sphery: garrettn: The cable companies are required to provide unencrypted versions of the local channels. If they provide digital, they don't (I think) have to provide analog. If they provide analog, they don't have to provide digital. All other channels can be encrypted. However, cable co's stopped encrypting analog years ago (as it's much more difficult to do it well than to encrypt digital).

[19:18:42] sphery: joe2371: sounds like your keybindings were remapped... Myth remembers the brightness/contrast settings, so it sets them, but it should do it before any video is displayed. Likely a different problem causing the blackness (like using the wrong playback profile group--you probably want Slim)

[19:39:51] justinh: IainG: 2 encoders != 2 tuners
[19:40:08] joe2371: So I cannot watch the mpeg encoder output live? I have to record some and then playback?
[19:40:29] garrettn: To make sure I'm not confused... If I had 5 frontends connecting to a backend with 5 tuners, each frontend could watch a separate channel... correct?
[19:40:34] justinh: IainG: that's multirec.. the default setting of 2 encoders per digital tuner.. you can have up to 5 to record more than one channel on the same multiplex
[19:40:45] IainG: Ah – OKies.
[19:40:58] IainG: My capturecard table looks like http://www.anchovy.durge.org/stuff/capturecard.txt
[19:41:01] justinh: garrettn: yup. or they could all watch recordings instead of wasting their lives channel grazing
[19:41:11] IainG: I'm guessing now that I need more entries in it.
[19:41:21] justinh: IainG: nope
[19:41:25] justinh: IainG: looks fine
[19:41:45] justinh: IainG: did you assign a video source to the 2nd tuner?
[19:42:32] justinh: input connections.. make sure both tuners are assigned a 'video source'
[19:42:39] garrettn: justinh: So what if all 5 frontends are on the same channel, are all 5 tuners still being used, or is only 1?
[19:42:46] justinh: garrettn: five

[19:44:31] garrettn: Is there any way you could have one tuner record the live version and watch the recorded version a minute behind realtime with all 5?
[19:44:45] justinh: garrettn: sure
[19:45:00] justinh: in 'watch recordings' mythtv defaults to showing the livetv group
[19:45:00] IainG: http://www.anchovy.durge.org/stuff/videosource.txt if that helps.
[19:45:16] garrettn: Can you watch a recording while it is recording?
[19:45:20] joe2371: Does C cycle only through tuner inputs? Is there a different key to select or cycle through encoder outputs?
[19:45:59] IainG: The thing is – I know I've had myth using both in the past, and then I mounted an assault on the channel table to dedup the scanned and the xmltv channels.
[19:46:24] justinh: IainG: dvb_diseqc_type is NULL on the 1st tuner but 0 on the 2nd
[19:46:44] justinh: garrettn: yes you can
[19:46:49] joe2371: oh, wait... did I need to restart mysql after modifying inputs in mythbackend?
[19:47:04] justinh: joe2371: no, just mythbackend
[19:47:14] IainG: So it is.
[19:47:19] IainG: I wonder what that does.
[19:47:22] IainG: *prod*
[19:47:29] justinh: look in the backend log IainG
[19:47:29] garrettn: justinh: So if I only had 1 tuner multiple frontends could watch the same live show if it is being recorded, correct?
[19:47:44] justinh: garrettn: live stuff is being recorded
[19:47:51] justinh: all of it is
[19:48:16] justinh: just that only one frontend will have control.. so if somebody changes channels... poof!
[19:48:48] joe2371: Hmm. I still don't seem to be able to see the output of the MPEG encoder. :-/
[19:49:31] justinh: livetv is entrenched in the 20th century. you can use a powerful & flexible scheduling system, so why be bound to watch shows when 'they' want you to watch them? ;-)

[20:06:05] joe2371: So am I to understand that the recent inclusion of roslyn blackbird devices into the kernel is not an indication that my hardware can now be made to work?

[20:27:04] sphery: gbee: well, I put it in the "not really important enough for #mythtv" channel... Probably would have been most of it, anyway (as I can't imagine anything except images taking up that much space).
[20:27:22] justinh: NeoMatrixJR: you can't force an EIT update. EIT stuff gets updated as & when the crawler finds new info
[20:27:25] sphery: NeoMatrixJR: TRUNCATE TABLE program;
[20:27:35] sphery: then restart the backend(s)
[20:28:30] justinh: that's really not a good idea though, cos if no updated info is being broadcast, it still won't be any more up to date than before the truncate
[20:28:43] sphery: (my comments being the other way of saying, "You can't force an EIT update. EIT stuff gets updated as & when the crawler finds new info," with the added, "so you can truncate the listings to make it all new info." )
[20:29:32] justinh: EIT is updated when it's updated
[20:29:34] justinh: or not
[20:30:12] sphery: Yeah, I agree... I wouldn't do it. But that's*** the only way to force Myth to get new info. (***Actually, a cleaner approach is deleting the Video Source, then re-creating it, then re-connecting it, then re-scanning for channels, then restarting all backends, but it was easier to say TRUNCATE...)
[20:30:12] NeoMatrixJR: yes, but I have it set up so the ATSC/QAM tuner is online online when it's asked for. Is there any way to force it to activate the QAM tuner and run an update (other than tuning into a QAM channel from a frontend)
[20:30:13] justinh: it can take quite a while for the program table to be populated using EIT, so it could be a moot point anyway
[20:30:56] justinh: NeoMatrixJR: saving a couple of watts? hmph
[20:31:08] NeoMatrixJR: I'm running a Pinnacle 800i ATSC/QAM/NTSC tuner. has to be setup like that or analog tuning don't work
[20:31:26] NeoMatrixJR: Myth reactivates the QAM and the analog gets lost
[20:31:26] sphery: NeoMatrixJR: do you mean Passive EIT Scanning or do you mean you shut down your Myth box when it's not recording?
[20:31:31] ** justinh condemns all hybrid tuners to the wastebin **
[20:31:45] NeoMatrixJR: passive EIT I guess.
[20:31:52] sphery: Actually, I think that would mean "Open DVB cards on demand..."

[20:31:59] sphery: got it...
[20:32:00] NeoMatrixJR: that's it.
[20:32:04] justinh: yeah it'll only be updated when myth _can_ use the card

[20:39:32] joe2371: sphery: That assumes I intend to use its analog inputs, though. Are you suggesting I will not be able to use the digital capabilities of that card with MythTV?
[20:40:14] dustybin: My 4 tuners (2x Nova-T 500) setup is _powerful_ stuff, 2 tuners are kept free for live TV only (the same ones are always used). The other 2 tuners use multirec x 6. It doesnt matter what i record, everything gets recorded :D
[20:40:27] sphery: btw, in case the guy working on it is in here, I'm not knocking your willingness to work on it or the fact that you want to help, but I /am/ knocking the idea of making it available to the general public. There are enough people causing enough problems trying to run with VDPAU on trunk.
[20:40:55] sphery: joe2371: I was talking abuot the analog side, only. Whether the digital side works, I couldn't say (as I haven't used any of those cards).
[20:41:17] justinh: sphery: plus the added noise of clueless dolts trying it might harm the chances of vdpau coming out of beta
[20:41:25] sphery: right
[20:41:30] jduggan: sphery: thats foss! share what you create! aslong as he supports it himself.. ;P
[20:41:53] sphery: I think nvidia is having a tough enough time filtering the signal from the noise with the reports they're getting
[20:42:12] sphery: jduggan: yeah, it's that latter part that people tend to forget.
[20:42:22] sphery: :)

[20:48:35] sphery: So, what are the reasons for VDPAU? 1) High def H.264--conceded (at least for now), 2) low-cost frontend--uh, how much does a Core 2/modern-Athlon system cost these days? maybe $200 (if you don't do your homework) so, erm, no. 2) low-power frontend--wait, so decoding on a 34W GPU versus decoding on a 65W Core 2/modern Athlon (or less, if you want) we'll naively assume that the whole 30W differnce in TDP is used, so figure 4 ...
[20:48:41] sphery: ... hrs of actual playback per day at $0.15/kWh we're talking $0.018 per day = $0.54/mo = $6.50/yr, so, erm, no.
[20:49:08] sphery: so, why can't people (at least people in the US) just wait a bit.
[20:49:25] dustybin: its 2009 and i still use a CRT for my TV :D
[20:49:49] sphery: If I could get a 67" or larger CRT, I would seriously consider it.
[20:50:03] sphery: Oh, wait, that's called SED/NED, right?  :)
[20:50:20] dustybin: i <3 the picture of my CRT, especially with my keene VGA > RGB SCART convertor box
[20:51:08] sphery: I love the picture of my 19" CRT monitor. It puts my LCD monitors to shame--but it's a lot harder to carry around, which is why I've since purchased 2 LCD monitors.
[20:51:16] jams: sphery- forgot to figure in cooling noise

[22:05:20] sphery: Captain_Murdoch is considering doing something to allow different ways of optimizing storage usage, but your patch wuold actually cause a lot of problems for many users--i.e. those who are using SG code for the purpose for which it was designed (optimizing I/O bandwidth).
[22:06:06] sphery: and, since the /right/ fix for your configuration is to occasionally move some files to your remote storage (to keep it always full)...

[22:06:29] clever: over a remote group with 5gig deleted(higher prio expire)
[22:06:38] sphery: right
[22:06:54] sphery: so, move some recordings off the local drives to make room on them so you don't have to expire stuff
[22:06:56] clever: to solve that i would need to figure out what prio every file is
[22:07:04] clever: and put all the autoexpire stuff on the 'local' drive
[22:07:21] sphery: if that's the case, then it's specifically your configuration that's wrong...
[22:07:24] clever: so that it has all the expirable stuff in 1 place, and can pick it fairly
[22:07:47] sphery: create a storage group for recordings made from rules that don't autoexpire, then it will be filled with stuff you like
[22:07:57] sphery: if that sg has only remote dirs, it will be used
[22:08:07] clever: ahh that might work
[22:08:11] clever: until i delete things
[22:08:21] sphery: then for recordings in the default sg, you can use local/remote dirs

[22:20:00] RyeBrye: iamlindoro: I'm not insulted – but I think you are right – the clothespin isn't immediately obvious what it represents... for isntance... is it holding up the filmstrip? and what does that represent... etc – I toyed with other ways of markign the filmstrip to show what the bookmark was
[22:20:58] RyeBrye: Ooh – one idea could be that I could have a little clip of paper or something on that clothespin.. maybe that woudl make it seem more like it was there to mark a position in time...
[22:21:57] RyeBrye: hey gbee – how hard would it be to have the themeing engine be extended so it could grab actual frames of the show and put them in those filmstrip clips dynamically for each show?
[22:21:59] iamlindoro_: The heart is sometimes used to represent a bookmark, might appear on the paper
