[00:01:54] javatexan: ewwww thats not very bullet proof yet. I hate to indiscriminantly start killing all the perl programs called newtivo2mp4.pl. newtivo2mp4 starts tivodecode and all the mencoder processes. So to stop this I would have to at this point kill all running instances of newtivo2mp4.pl, tivodecode, and mencoder when I want to restart or stop this new service? Anyone know of a better way?

[01:30:19] cowbud (cowbud!n=fuas@68.186.25.120) has joined #mythtv-users
[01:31:45] J-e-f-f-A: mikeones: Schedules direct is not for-profit — and was started by some of the myth folks to provide a Legal, reliable listings solution for us, and other open-source projects.
[01:31:56] mikeones: J-e-f-f-A: I am working towards grabbing an IRblaster but want to get a few recording 1st

[01:32:28] J-e-f-f-A: mikeones: So sign up for SD – you get a free 20 or 30 day trial... (forget which)
[01:32:49] mikeones: I have fios HP and a stb that puts out anlog
[01:32:53] J-e-f-f-A: oops, make that 7-day trial
[01:33:20] mikeones: any way to get myth to grab video from channel 3?
[01:33:26] J-e-f-f-A: mikeones: Yep, that STB should also have at least Composite Video output, probably S-Video too. S-video would be best.
[01:33:53] mikeones: don't have that cable around. Anyway to get coax to work?
[01:34:39] J-e-f-f-A: mikeones: yes – STB -> S-video & Sterio Audio -> Tuner card's video input. Mythtv configured with that input as the source for your cable company's lineup.
[01:35:27] mikeones: J-e-f-f-A: so coax out from the anolog STB will not work?
[01:35:54] J-e-f-f-A: mikeones: It will work, but be much lower quality.
[01:36:17] mikeones: same quality as anolog cable or lower?
[01:37:27] J-e-f-f-A: mikeones: About the same, however, your cable box will be receiving the signal (either Analog or Digital), then re-encoding it to RF (channel 3), then going into your computer's Tuner, and being de-coded back to video....
[01:37:53] mikeones: I see
[01:38:53] mikeones: J-e-f-f-A: so I need a video sourcesource if I try anolog coax to mythtv?
[01:40:34] J-e-f-f-A: mikeones: Yes – the source defines what channels are available for that input.
[01:41:41] mikeones: but would I need if if all i get from the stb is channel 3? I dont need guide data right now

[01:43:18] J-e-f-f-A: mikeones: You can do that, but you're just making things harder on yourself. Myth is designed to be a PVR, sounds like you just want it to be an 'on-demand recorder' like a VCR or DVD recorder, and it won't work well in that capacity.
[01:43:46] larue24601: Has anyone been able to get the Hauppage 950Q to work with MythTV?

[03:07:33] K`zan: 1. Do you really have to subscribe to a proprietary scheduling service to get it to work at all?
[03:07:52] wagnerrp: 1. where do you live?
[03:08:22] K`zan: 2. Myth apparently detects my PCHDTV HD3000 as analog and I checked and we are supposed to have digital channels above 100 on our analog cable.
[03:08:30] K`zan: wagnerrp: Seattle, WA USA
[03:08:51] wagnerrp: 2. myth picks up your pchdtv as two independent cards, one analog, one digital
[03:09:02] wagnerrp: the analog is /dev/video0, the digital is /dev/dvb/adaptor0
[03:09:15] K`zan: I guess I need to run setup again?
[03:09:25] wagnerrp: you must put them in a input group, because they are mutually exclusive, you cannot use them both at the same time
[03:09:26] K`zan: as a second card?
[03:09:33] wagnerrp: two separate inputs
[03:09:46] K`zan: Humm, ignorance is NOT bliss :).
[03:10:25] wagnerrp: 1. web scrapers suck, and EIT data in the US is limited
[03:10:35] K`zan: Not much point to it if I have to subscribe to the proprietary service to get anything happening.
[03:10:42] wagnerrp: most people see $20/yr to be relatively painless for guide data
[03:10:55] K`zan: I have had no real luck with this card to date :-/.
[03:10:58] ** sphery wonders how much a subscription to TV Guide costs... **

[03:11:26] wagnerrp: that card should work just fine with mythtv, unless its broken
[03:11:28] K`zan: Titan is free :) and better than comcasts...
[03:12:10] K`zan: wagnerrp: That is the question. Filed it away about a year ago, I was able to get off air HD but not tell, antenna could have been it.
[03:12:26] K`zan: Decided to try again when I found out about the HD channels above 100.
[03:12:40] wagnerrp: you have cable?
[03:12:48] K`zan: Yes, extended analog.
[03:12:57] wagnerrp: plug the digital card into the cable
[03:12:59] K`zan: 100 channels of nothing to watch LOL.
[03:13:10] K`zan: It is plugged into the cable now.
[03:13:26] wagnerrp: your cableco MUST rebroadcast the local OTA channels over their cable
[03:13:33] wagnerrp: FCC mandate
[03:13:35] K`zan: Pulled it off the Leadtech
[03:14:04] K`zan: That is, from what I was told, what is above 100 – corresponds to the OTA channels 105 == channel 5...
[03:14:18] wagnerrp: not by a long shot
[03:14:23] K`zan: ??
[03:14:35] wagnerrp: channels 78 and above are usually dedicated to digital cable
[03:14:43] wagnerrp: 77 and below, analog cable
[03:14:45] sphery: BTW, Schedules Direct service is not proprietary
[03:14:46] K`zan: Not digital cable...
[03:14:59] K`zan: Ah, that might explain why the scan crapped out at 78
[03:15:04] sphery: the listings they /purchase/ from Tribune Media Services are proprietary (and copyright TMS)
[03:15:09] wagnerrp: yes, digital cable
[03:15:25] wagnerrp: however each 'channel' on digital cable can contain multiple video streams, subchannels
[03:15:28] K`zan: We don't have digital cable, analog as I understand it.
[03:15:40] wagnerrp: and those subchannels can be independently named
[03:15:48] K`zan: We can switch to digital but there are problems with that atm
[03:16:03] wagnerrp: if you have cable, you have digital cable
[03:16:13] wagnerrp: you merely dont have a cablebox to tune it
[03:16:24] K`zan: Err, trying to understand, please bear with.
[03:16:33] wagnerrp: at least thats now nearly all US cable systems are set up
[03:16:47] wagnerrp: remember, you and all your neighbors all run off the same cable feed
[03:16:57] wagnerrp: so if any of your neighbors have digital cable, you must get it too
[03:17:03] K`zan: From what she (comcest tech) says that yes, it is digital, but bastardized to analog for us (in the box downstairs?).
[03:17:18] K`zan: s/comcest/comcast.
[03:17:48] K`zan: Which makes me wonder how we can have digital above 100. Yes, I am *seriously* confused.
[03:18:08] wagnerrp: analog lives in 2–77, digital lives in 78–125
[03:18:22] K`zan: Been reading / googling for the past two days...
[03:18:42] wagnerrp: however in each of those 45 or so channels, you have digital subchannels
[03:18:55] wagnerrp: each digital cable channel containes some 39mbps of bandwidth
[03:19:02] K`zan: Hummm, the scan utility I was using (for the pchd card) crapped out at 78.
[03:19:07] wagnerrp: which they can divide as they please between audio, video, and internet
[03:19:18] K`zan: Understand that much on how the digital streams work.
[03:20:25] K`zan: What is going on here is that my roomie is handicapped and has a analog card in her box that she can keyboard control with her nose, we found out yesterday that the "if you have cable you will be fine with analog TVs" is NOT so...
[03:20:57] K`zan: She refuses to run windoz, which is the problem...
[03:21:18] K`zan: Wincrap HD card would give her what she needs, but....
[03:21:35] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: that is true, IF either A) The cable company continues to broadcast Analog channels, or B) you have a STB to convert the digital signal into Analog.
[03:21:44] K`zan: Lemme take a peek at the myth setup.
[03:22:07] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: "refuses to run windoz"... Sounds pretty smart to me!!!! ;-)
[03:22:51] K`zan: J-e-f-f-A: True, what they will be doing is attaching a converter box to all analog TVs and she us unable to work one of those. Useless, so I need to find some alternative since about all she can do is watch TV and occasional email and web typing with her nose.
[03:23:16] K`zan: J-e-f-f-A: Yes, smart and of high integrity :-).
[03:23:47] K`zan: Has MS and is essentially quadraplegic...
[03:24:01] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: She can't change channels with a remote control? They have a 'jumbo remote control' at a local store which each button is nearly 1" square...
[03:24:15] wagnerrp: you can get a cablebox with firewire inputs, which can be controlled by a computer, and thus the keyboard control she already has

[03:29:43] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: Well, theoretically you could setup LIRC to control the Set-top-box...
[03:30:28] K`zan: First thought was to get a supported HD card and find something to run it (xine?) but that is a real confusing issue, google wasn't a lot of help.
[03:30:30] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: Myth would probably slow the box down too much, considering it's a 'framegrabber' card. And if she's only watching 'live tv', then there's no point in using Myth.
[03:30:59] K`zan: J-e-f-f-A: True, she would like to record, but that isn't hard and fast.
[03:31:01] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: Yeah, but don't expect a HD card to tune in digital cable. Most (if not all) of the channels are encrypted.
[03:31:29] K`zan: Good ole entertainment mafias, sigh...
[03:31:49] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: She's gonna need a STB.
[03:31:57] K`zan: STB?
[03:31:58] wagnerrp: youre not likely to get 'digital cable', but you should be get the local OTA channels, and you wont have to worry about antenna issues
[03:32:03] wagnerrp: set top box
[03:32:11] K`zan: Ah, thanks!
[03:32:32] wagnerrp: set top box, or cablecard, are the only two mechanisms for receiving digital cable
[03:32:49] wagnerrp: and you will never find a cablecard tuner that works in linux
[03:33:00] K`zan: We did get a note from comcast that we can switch over to digital cable at no extra charge, but with everything here analog that would be problematical for Jean.
[03:33:02] wagnerrp: to be honest, you really cannot buy a cablecard tuner for windows either
[03:33:32] wagnerrp: what is this nose-to-keyboard program?
[03:34:18] wagnerrp: you can pick up an ir blaster, and write some menu program to control an STB
[03:34:40] K`zan: tvtime – m mutes, up and down arrow change channels, numbers set channel, etc...
[03:35:02] wagnerrp: i mean, does she just bend over and hit the keyboard with her nose?
[03:35:10] K`zan: Yes
[03:35:59] K`zan: I can work up some kind of stand for a remote so she can still get at the keyboard to do email and web stuff.
[03:36:24] K`zan: IR sensor and a servo to move it into place when she needs it...
[03:36:34] K`zan: DUnno
[03:37:12] K`zan: Thanks much for all the input here folks, MUCH appreciated!
[03:37:56] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: You could just use something like Mplayer to display the video, and a program doing IR blasting to change channels...
[03:39:23] K`zan: Yes, going to have to give this some thought... Not sure how mplayer would work with a STB, which seems to be the only alternative to going out and getting a new TV...
[03:39:50] K`zan: Neither of which really fills the needs, sigh.
[03:40:07] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: You'd do "mplayer /dev/video0" – with the STB connected via audio/video to the tuner card's inputs...
[03:40:28] K`zan: At least I get the box myth is on back :).
[03:40:35] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: You could do the same with Tvtime, tuned to the video input. ;-)
[03:40:55] K`zan: J-e-f-f-A: That sounds like a plan, once we get all the crap in here to do it, we'll try that.
[03:41:35] K`zan: From what I was told they are having a hell of a time getting the STBs to work.
[03:41:50] wagnerrp: who are?
[03:41:56] K`zan: comcast
[03:42:06] J-e-f-f-A: Sounds strange ^^^
[03:42:08] K`zan: Here anyway.
[03:42:22] K`zan: Heh, nothing that happens with comcast is strange to me anymore :).
[03:42:24] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: Again, an Over-the-Air STB won't work for Cable TV.
[03:42:49] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: You need the cable-comany's STB...
[03:42:56] K`zan: These will come from comcast, I have not a clue how convoluted this mess is going to get.
[03:44:22] K`zan: Again, thanks much for everything. Got a few ideas to work with now rather than just thrashing.

[05:14:16] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: In mythtv-setup iirc — "Enable EIT scan"...
[05:14:51] K`zan: SYes, but the setup from rebooting does not seem to be the same setup I used on install?!?
[05:15:09] K`zan: lemme try that one from a terminal.
[05:15:20] J-e-f-f-A: shutdown the backend, go into mythtv-settings
[05:15:40] J-e-f-f-A: Go to the video source, change the listings grabber to "Transmitted guide only (EIT)"
[05:17:16] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: Then fire the backend back up. [I don't know how long it takes to get the EIT data though...]

[05:21:57] K`zan: J-e-f-f-A: Thanks, found it :).
[05:23:06] K`zan: Now do I have to set up two different cards one for ATSC and one for DVB? Or is that already in there? Under "Card Types" I can find both.
[05:23:56] K`zan: Ah, something about input group, lemme find that.
[05:24:06] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: The HD-5500 is considered a DVB card. Don't bother to setup the /dev/videox device – that's an analog framegrabber. (and won't be of any use after Feb)

[05:27:40] K`zan: J-e-f-f-A: A bit confiuzed again. Do I have to set up two capture cards first?
[05:28:28] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: If you're only doing Digital Over-the-Air ATSC, no. Just setup one DVB tuner – should be /dev/dvb/adapter0
[05:28:39] K`zan: I think I am just going to go with the dvb and the EIT and leave it at that for now.

[05:29:18] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: Yeah, there's no EIT on Analog.
[05:29:46] K`zan: Ah, OK, for now I have the Leadtek in the other box for that. Thanks.
[05:29:59] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: There's a channel scanner in mythtv-setup.
[05:30:09] K`zan: Just save it and see :)
[05:30:11] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: You also have to associate the source with the tuner.
[05:30:28] K`zan: Ah, OK lemme check. Pretty sure I have that. Checking again.
[05:32:07] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: BTW: Let the channel scan go completely through. Digital channel numbers are not the same as the frequency channel number. For instance, Analog channel 25 here in Boston is digital channel 25.1 on channel 31.

[05:35:16] K`zan: Will take a while to get up there :).
[05:36:48] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: There's still 65 channels to scan... ;-) It's the same frequencies, just transmitted in digital instead of analog.

[05:53:49] K`zan: Interesting to note that it looks better than my analog card on cable AND this has done better than anything I tried to do with this card before – on an FM dipole (4th floor facing away from the towers, pretty sure).
[05:57:47] J-e-f-f-A: K`zan: It should look better than Analog – it's pure digital. ;-)

[07:05:26] Gumby: so should the flash streaming in mythweb just work on a default installation? or is ffmpeg needed for that as well?

[11:52:35] octavsly: Weel I have a EIPA EPIA12000EG fanless. The whole system consumes ~30W
[11:52:38] justinh: FWIW, I'd just make do with not shutting it down automagically
[11:52:50] fdlinux: i spend yesterdag almost the whole day with wakelarm ,even reinstalled 2 times , no luck

[11:53:13] octavsly: do you have a server running?
[11:53:21] justinh: put the HDDs to sleep when you're not using em & have that
[11:53:40] octavsly: have waht?
[11:53:50] octavsly: I need to go to lunch
[11:54:00] octavsly: i will be back in ~1 hour

[20:47:07] gbee: forrestv: the music miniplayer is a hack really it uses a seperate borderless window, it operates differently to most other areas of myth
[20:47:54] forrestv: gbee, what? what miniplayer?
[20:48:48] gbee: forrestv: I thought you had said that the problem happened with the music miniplayer, maybe I mis-read, whatever the cause it will be fixed in 0.22

[20:49:00] gbee: that's what I get for trying to elaborate

[20:49:51] iamlindoro: Ooooh, a shiny pound
[20:49:55] gbee: as a demo showing it to be possible
[20:50:13] gbee: or a beer
[20:50:23] justinh: I'll give £10to the first person to make a completely new mythtv theme using mythui which isn't a rip off of an xbmc skin
[20:50:23] gbee: which is actually more valuable ...
[20:50:43] iamlindoro: gbee, Hey, I'm trying to do my part here :)
[20:51:45] dustybin: gbee: can the new ui make the selectors move smoothly?
[20:51:48] justinh: gbee: it wouldn't be very hard to do that at all
[20:51:58] ** justinh smacks dustybin into next year **
[20:52:02] dustybin: why?
[20:52:18] ** justinh smacks dustybin into next year properly **
[20:52:21] gbee: justinh: complete themes yeah, but I can't think of a better way to get people excited than creating demo screens which copy pixel for pixel a screen from every other media centre
[20:52:43] dustybin: i like smooth moving selectors :( is that a bad thing?
[20:52:45] justinh: I think my sarcasm detector is broken

[20:55:49] justinh: besides, we've not got that nifty blur effect yet
[20:56:04] gbee: hell, 5 minutes
[20:56:19] dustybin: are all these effects because of QT4 ?

[20:57:46] gbee: that blur is interesting, wonder how they do that – not literally, but in the theme
[20:58:18] justinh: gbee: they have a tag in the xml which says 'blur under this'
[20:58:55] gbee: simple enough then
[20:59:19] justinh: e.g. <imagetype name="foo"><filename>blackbox.png</filename><positio n>wah,woo</position><blurunder>yes</blurunder></imagetyp e>
[20:59:21] gbee: yeah, no reason why I can't add that

[21:13:51] justinh: gonna have to gut this watch recordings screen. I really don't like the mix of horizontal & vertical lists
[21:17:14] justinh: gbee: at the risk of sounding like an utter pain in the backside, would there be any danger of being able to have an expandable/contractable vertical list so when a list is no longer selected it shrinks? kind of like the default (old) way but not as space wasting

[21:18:57] gbee: anything is possible, won't say it's a simple addition though
[21:19:35] justinh: is vertical text possible yet?
[21:20:22] gbee: faster/easier would be a list which slides out of the way, once the animation xml is in then it would just require some hooks added so that animation can be triggered on certain actions (loss of focus etc)
[21:20:30] gbee: which was my plan anyway
[21:20:39] justinh: that'd work :)
[21:21:15] gbee: vertical text isn't possible yet, but not difficult I'd guess
[21:21:29] justinh: and you could have a tab on the left or the top of the box with the group/show name in it
[21:21:52] justinh: so once again I'm getting a bit ahead of myself. not to worry
[21:22:36] gbee: not sure I'll be working on any special effects until the rest of the frontend screens are ported, since that's more important
[21:23:30] justinh: it wouldn't have to slide to satisfy me (ooerr missus) but I can see how it'd be as easy to do both at the same time
[21:23:43] gbee: it's comparatively boring, but necessary
[21:24:25] justinh: I had another look at the button spacing stuff when I got bored the other day. still confuzzled the hell out of me
[21:24:53] gbee: the movement animation stuff has planned for a long time and the groundwork was done long before I touched mythui, it just lacks xml and some hooks as I mentioned before
[21:25:02] justinh: I don't like things beating me like that
[21:25:33] gbee: the wrapping/scrolling stuff gives me a headache, literally
[21:25:46] gbee: especially when combined
[21:26:27] justinh: I used to write scrollers in assembly back in the 8-bit days. only character level, not pixel (ZX81)
[21:27:47] justinh: does myth do any fancy double buffering tricks etc?
[21:28:33] gbee: by scrolling I mean the 'keep selected item in centre of list' stuff, the scrolling text was easier though not without it's challenges
[21:28:42] justinh: I've not even seen the mythuitest demo run properly yet. everything just leaves trails when it moves
[21:29:01] gbee: justinh: the painters automatically double buffer, at least the QT one does
[21:29:17] justinh: gbee: yeah, lists are annoying when they don't contain odd numbers of items ;-)
[21:31:24] justinh: this is one of the things where I can see an argument for using a set of libs like clutter
[21:31:49] justinh: not saying I'd advocate it for one second, but I can see the argument
[21:32:19] justinh: stupid question but does qt not have a set of stuff for jobs like this?
[21:32:36] gbee: doesn't give us the same level of flexibility in implementation that writing our own stuff does, look at the fact that Chutt just wrote a VDPAU based painter
[21:33:27] gbee: plus clutter is just a wrapper around stuff like opengl, might as well use opengl directly IMHO
[21:34:17] justinh: yeah but the main thing is, somebody else has already done the hard sums
[21:34:27] gbee: not seen anything in QT which we could use, might be there but mostly QT is about the traditional desktop application
[21:34:44] gbee: aye
[21:34:50] justinh: well, there was the qt coverflow gadget, maybe there's much more
[21:35:43] gbee: heh, yeah, it wasn't a widget – it was an example bit of code explaining how it might be written
[21:35:48] justinh: ah
[21:36:27] gbee: and it's not the coverflow that you and I might imagine, it was pretty basic really

[23:07:46] Mr_Grieves__: Of course, according to that, this card should be a snap to set up :D

[23:10:18] Mr_Grieves__: iamlindoro: I don't seem to get any channels digitally with the card, so I looks like I'm stuck with framegrabbing for now...unless there is some way to get the analog signal through dvb drivers that I'm not aware of...?
[23:11:04] iamlindoro: analog and DVB are by definition opposites
[23:11:18] Mr_Grieves__: That's what I thought :(
[23:12:05] waxhead: OK.. any links to how to acrhive to DVD for mythtv?
[23:12:15] waxhead: the wiki looks a bit sparse...

[23:40:21] Mr_Grieves__: Does myth use v4lctl to control framegrabbers?

[23:59:07] venger: the mythtv poster tagged to each video, is that location supposed to be a global thing? i'm setting up another frontend and notice all the post locals point to how they were set up on the original frontend. i noticed a setting in media settings itselt to set the poster directory, which is set differently on this frontend. anyway will i break the other frontends links if i start changing it on this new frontend?
[23:59:43] venger: post locals should read "poster locations"
